Diner Reviews
  • "When we got to Tosca we did not see the valet service because they were up aginst wall on their Iphones--we stopped no one came, so we parked int he public garage which was a nightmare. The food was very good, but the service was slow getting started and at the end. They placed a large table next to us so when it came time to leave we were trapped and could not get out wihtout the waiter making enough room we could squeeze by being flat against the wall. Tosca could be a great place if someone cared, but with other great Italian places--pass on this one"

  • "This place is worth your time. The food was atypical but delicious. I really like an Italian White wine, Falanghina......and this place had a selection of two.....the first time I've ever had a selection."

  • "So delicious. Did the three course per theater menu and everything was awesome. Not cheap though."

  • "This is a first class restaurant. The staff is outstanding. The menu is well rounded and the wine list fabulous. My wife and I were in DC to celebrate her Bday and see a show. We both took advantage of the Pre Theater offerings. There were serval choices in input the three courses. We both loved our meals. Veal stuffed ravioli in a butter sage sauce was her choice and i chose the rock fish. Both exceeded expectation. To make the end special her dessert came with a candle and an edible "Happy Birthday". Can't wait to go back!"

  • "I've been to this restaurant many times and it never fails to provide a great dinner. On this occasion the Rockfish special and theseafood risotto were excellent."

  • "We were impressed the moment we sat at the bar, when we were served slices of fresh bread, sausage, and almonds. For an opener, Tosca hit a home run. The wait staff was thoughtful and attentive without being overbearing. The food tasted delicious and filled us. And with the three course, pre-theater special, the price was right!"

  • "One of my favorite restaurants in DC. Very civilized and always a pleasure."

  • "Tosca always takes fine dining in Washington to the next level. Whether it is the warm greeting when coming into the restaurant, or the impeccable service, or the outstandingly prepared food, Tosca delivers. If they have the squash blossom appetizer (special) when you go, try it. You won't be disappointed!!"

  • "Not only is Tosca my favorite restaurant in the Washington DC area, it is simply one of the best.in the country. If the brilliantly prepared food is not your thing, then just glance at a nearby table and tto see who's who in Washington politics and business....I took visiting cousins from Amsterdam to dinner and they were duly impressed and this from people used to eating well in Europe... N.E. Hart Nibbrig, Ph.D."

  • "I don't think I've ever had a subpar meal here, and often they are spectacular."

  • "Nothing special about this restaurant. For a "fine" italian restaurant the pasta was OK but not wonderful. We were disappointed with this highly recommended restaurant."
    Dined on 3/29/2014
  • "Pre-theater prix-fix dinner was very good. Roasted Rockfish was exceptional in the thin crisp crust and moistness at the same time. Exceptionally excellent service."

  • "The food, service and atmosphere was absolutely fantastic. Consistently one of the best dining experiences in Washington DC"

  • "Tosca's is one of the best Italian restaurants in DC area. Had another very good experience the other night. All of the pasta dishes are terrific and can be ordered as first courses in a half order. They allow you to bring your own wine - this was a big highlight for us wine snobs. The waitstaff was first rate. My only complaint was that the veal chop (the most expensive thing we ordered) was underwhelming. Stay with the pasta dishes - you won't be disappointed."

  • "I dined at Tosca on 3/15 for my boyfriend's birthday dinner. I would have to say that the service is very good, very attentive and knowledge but the food was lacking the quality it should for the restaurant's high prices. It's more of a stuffy, quiet restaurant for an older crowd, a date you're trying to impress or for a business dinner. They undercooked our lobster ravioli and my seafood risotto. Both we're way too al dente, it was tough to eat. I'm Italian, I love my pasta al dente but this was too much. The rest of the my group enjoyed their entrees and desserts. I appreciated that the restaurant gave my boyfriend a complimentary dessert for his birthday but I feel that there are better places in DC, just do your research or ask a local."

  • "I had about a cupful of risotto for $32; highly overpriced, I would say. Only reason to go to Tosca anymore is during restaurant week or pre-theatre. Only then would it represent good value."

  • "Our late dining choice did not make a difference to the staff at Tosca and our Open Table reservation was recognized. The restaurant was busy and efficient yet our dining experience was excellent. The staff was attentive; offered suggestions; and the food was outstanding. They split our dishes for sharing and the service was very good. We'll definitely go back."

  • "Our group of four had a thoroughly enjoyable dinner with exceptional service and excellent, especially the pastas. A memorable evening in the heart of DC."

  • "To be fair to Tosca, I have never had bad service until my most recent visit (which is why I give it five stars overall). Every other time, the restaurant has been perfect. The last time I was there, a local political figure was there, and for whatever reason, my service was not good."

  • "My wife loved it and the service was top notch!! Although the food is a bit pricy, it was very good and you want walk away hungry."

  • "Tosca's tasteful decor and convenient location is ideal for business lunches. The menu is diverse for those with dietary restrictions and the attentive service kept the meeting timely."

  • "service was fair and at times borderline professional."

  • "Lovely, old school restaurant. Only complaint is that the service might be just a bit too attentive... almost hovering. However, in an era of massive informality and when it can be hard to get great service... that is a nice problem to have. Everyone is so nice. The food is outstanding... great cocktails too! A classy and classic place to entertain!"

  • "I was pleasantly surprised by everything. Great food and extremely service friendly. Made for a nice, romantic Valentines Day dinner."

  • "Upon entering the restaurant it is modern and private. The service was prompt and professional. The food has a modern twist to classic Italian dishes. I found the scallops exquisite, the lamb perfectly done, the risotto a little too al dente for my personal taste, and the tiramisu was excellent. My fiancé had the foie gras which was soft and delicate but not comparable to her favorite French place. She found the ravioli with butternut squash tasty and unique, the prime rib cooked as requested, and the chocolate cake dessert very delicious. However, we did feel that it was overpriced in comparison to other high end restaurants we have been to in D.C. where they have more intimate environments."

  • "I've always said that DC has terrible Italian food and am glad I finally found a restaurant to prove me wrong. I did the $38 pre-theater menu, which I would highly recommend as it is a good way to try multiple courses without shelling out a ton of money. The carrot paperdelle in rabbit ragu was fabulous. It was so good I literally cleaned the plate."

  • "Excellent in all respects. Variety of menu especially special three course pre theater was just right for me and my wife."

  • "There is no finer restaurant in DC. Everything is fantastic. Chef Massimo is PERFECT with his finesse of flavors. You wouldn't normally go to an Italian Rest for steak but here it is the best anywhere -- and I used to live in Texas. My wife and I love this place --consider exquisite ravioli with elk meat sauce. And before you wonder if it is too expensive consider you can go to a nice place party of 4 w/drinks & spend $250 - 300. Why not blow the experience away for not much more? Finally, I gotta say something about the wait staff. we have gone to Tosca for years, maybe once a quarter at most. The waiters all remember us and our preferences. Simply, they take Tosca from amazing to very special. DO NOT PASS UP TOSCA.. Dennis & Adelina"

  • "The restaurant did not disappoint - even on a snowy evening. The Yelp reviews didn't let me down either. The service was fantastic and the food was incredible. You don't need to order the most expensive thing on the menu to get an awesome dish - because everything was awesome. I took my partner there for his 21st birthday and it turned out perfectly."

  • "Supposedly this is the best Italian restaurant in town. Then why was the dining room less than half full on a Friday night? Probably because expense account diners don't usually do business on a Friday night. $48 for a flavorless steak anyone? Or how about an aggressive waiter who will try to compensate for the scarcity of tip-income-generating tables by suggesting you buy another bottle of wine when you are 3/4 done with your entree and you still have wine in your glass? The pasta dishes, on the other hand, are inventive, beautiful and delicious, but still overpriced at $32. I have had the good fortune of dining in the world's most celebrated restaurants and have felt they merited the top dollars they command. Not so with Tosca."

  • "May I award six stars? Tosca is a lovely, tailored space with elegant food and wine to match with the best Italian in DC that we have found. The perfect venue for dinner with friends or clients when you are looking for a sophisticated evening out without having to shout at each other or scan the room for your waiter. The wine list is great with some nice selections in most price ranges, though as you might expect, very easy to escalate quickly! The pastas are finely textured, delicate and beautifully flavored. The menu is not huge but a very nice mix to appeal to anyone with seafood, duck, lamb, beef, etc. Would not consider coming to DC without dining here and have recommended it to several very satisfied friends."

  • "My wife and I had dinner at Tosca for my birthday. We both had the larger sampler menu and each course was superb and memorable. Our waiter was spot on with drink and wine recommendations and spaced the different courses perfectly. He arrived with each course to explain the ingrediants and preparation with passion. The food was even better. Best meal we have had in DC! Absolutely spectacular."

  • "All the food was well thought out and delicious. The wait staff was sharp and uber professional. It's a bit stuffy, old school washington, but the food was delicious and you can get hipness elsewhere. Great pre-theater menu before Warner Theater -- just 2 blocks away!"
