Diner Reviews
  • "It was my friend's birthday and I asked for a nice table and got the corner booth, the best table in the restaurant. There was a "happy birthday" message at her place in a lovely frame. The food was excellent and they brought my friend a lovely dessert with a candle, compliments of the restaurant. The wine list was good and they had Sancerre by the glass, a rare occurrence. The ambience is lovely--elegant and low key. The waitresses are dressed in white blouses, black skirts, and pear necklaces and earrings. Even the lipsticks colors are specified by the Tortoise Club. The food was excellent. They let us sit and talk as long as we liked. I will be back."

  • "First time at the Tortoise. I loved the atmosphere. The food was pretty good. I had the tomato soup and it was a bit spicier than expected, very good, but it caught me by surprise. I don't recall seeing on the menu that it was spicy. I also had the tuna melt, not a fancy dish but it was well prepared and about what I would have expected. Next time I'll be more adventurous in my choice. This was a business meeting with our other attendees and the low key, the quiet ambiance suited our needs perfectly as we able to easily hear each other. I hate places where I can't hear other members of my lunch party so this was perfect."

  • "Upon arrival we had no waiter. By asking the waiter close by he took over. He was not assigned our table but waited on us for the evening. Chimmy was exceptional. It would be nice if all waiters had his talent. I would rate him a number 10 plus"

  • "We went for dinner before a show at the Goodman and enjoyed ourselves enough to want to return after the show for dessert. For dinner we split the Tuna Tartar and it had just the right amount of zip. The we split the White Fish. It was awesome and there was plenty of food on the plates. Delicious. Excellent service. After the show, we returned for the jazz and dessert. Jazz was very good. Service and apple crumble was really good."

  • "I would hesitate to call this a "power lunch" spot, even though the dark woods and leather chairs certainly make it feel that way. The suit clad clientele gave me a look as I walked to our table in khakis! The food is not overly complex, yet yields to fresh and in some cases healthy fare. I had the lobster club and it was excellent! My partner had the whitefish and that was excellent as well! We had the popovers for an appetizer, something everyone should try if they haven't already. The real treat was the dessert - fresh cherry pie! I love cherry pie and had a double espresso just to offset the sugar - phew! Great meal, not too heavy, great service, excellent dessert! $80 + tip for two, no alcohol but all the courses."

  • "Went to the restaurant on a recommendation from a friend who proposed at the restaurant. He was not kidding, when he said this place was perfect. The food, service, everything! The best I've had in Chicago."

  • "Restaurant had terrific feel. Type of place you could bring girlfriend for romantic night out or a group of friends for an energetic get-together. Food was excellent. Highly recommend."

  • "Great food (steak frites; short ribs; hummus n veggies) and good drinks (manhattan perfectly prepared). The atmosphere is quite the male dominated space, in that servers, etc. are 90% men. We were a group of four women, and it's a shame that more women aren't employed here where check is on the order of $50 per person. We'll be back for the jazz and appetizers, or for special occasion."

  • "I get to Tortoise Club a few times a year and it's a pleasant experience each time. The challenge of living in Chicago is that there are hundreds of great places clamoring for attention and only so many calories one can absorb in a day. (Personally, i am up to 27,000, but don't try this trick at home.) The menu is varied and creative, so you can select something that's more or less a staple or try something new. I happen to like booths more than tables or banquettes, so the lack of booths is a negative for me. However, the food and service are consistently solid, so it's on my safe-list for new connections."

  • "Went to the Tortoise Club with another couple and all 4 of us had excellent dishes. It was our waiter's first night and him and his trainer were both very personably and friendly. Always made sure our glasses were full and the food was up to par. I'll definitely be going back to try more of the menu."

  • "Not great. Took us 20 minutes to get our first drink. And the food is terrible. Don't bother going here."

  • "The Tortoise Club is a great spot for pre-theater dining. Very limited menu with nothing very notable, but friendly and accommodating service make it a decent downtown option. Live entertainment on weekends is usually pretty mellow but the bar can get noisy and crowded. This is pretty basic comfort food dining, not a place for foodies."

  • "This dinner club is exactly the place we would love to go too every week if we lived in the downtown Chicago area, but we were visiting our daughter who does live in The Loop.... and we will be sure to come back to visit her and The Tortoise Club as often as possible!"

  • "Beautiful place but I was really hoping the food would have been better. The pork chop someone else got was amazing but unfortunately I got the ribeye which was chewy and not at all juicy or flavorful."

  • "This restaurant offers everything on a grand scale: food, service, atmosphere. Although the prices at first might seem expensive, once you get your food thoughts of anything but great flavor disappear. We both had the crusted sautéed whitefish from Lake Superior and have never had a tastier version anywhere. This fish was fresh, tasty, and delicious. THe servive was impeccable and the hostess was a real gem. We also really luxuriated in the atmosphere, which was clubby and welcoming. THis restaurant is a real find."

  • "We had a very large group. The reservation was easy to make and the host was very accommodating even as our numbers grew. Our group was very polite, never very loud, and thankful to the waitstaff. The waiter seemed like we were a bother although the restaurant was not crowded at all. Our group is in a service industry and as such is very much in tune with treating people right. Our waiter seemed very aloof although the bus staff was much more helpful and gracious. The entrees were just ok - not too flavorful. The flatbread was delicious!"

  • "This was our first visit to this restaurant. The menu had regular dinner entrees and items such as hamburgers and hot dogs. The quality of the food was very good and the service was attentive. The hamburgers and hot dog had a steep price that one would not expect for these items. We went on Sunday and did not experience entertainment."

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed the food and the restaurant. Didn't care much for the Apple Crisp (apples too hard) but the vegetables were the best I've had in a long time. Had the swordfish steak and it was very good. The place is rather hard to find so better directions would help..like across from, near the river, etc. It's interesting that the majority of your patrons were mature and perhaps I'm too old but I think it would be helpful if you could instill some add'l courtesies in your employees. For instance, if a lady is having trouble getting out of her coat, one might offer to help. If a lady is having difficulty with the door of the car (particularly when she is handicapped) an offer would be helpful. Con't below"

  • "We were treated like royalty from the minute we walked in! Every staff member that we came into contact with was outstanding with their service. Sasha was our waitress. She was amazing. She gave great suggestions and even though, sorry to say, even though we tried not to be.... we were a little high maintenance, she handled it very well. We had the smoked salmon appetizer, very excellent and more than enough for two. The brussel sprout salad was very different and great. We had the halibut special.....fabulous! We had two kinds of ice cream pistachio and rum praline. Yummy! I go out to a lot of nice restaurants....this one is tops!"

  • "The Tortoise Club provided a great experience from beginning to end. From cocktails, which Karen helped us select, to the host who made us feel welcome as we waited for all of our party to arrive, to the wonderful descriptions of various food choices provided by our server which proved to be both appetizing and accurate, to a recommended dessert. The night was perfect. Food was excellent, short ribs, fish, pork chop all favorites. The lobster appetizer and calamari were very good. The dessert of Michigan cherry pie with home made ice cream, was a great end to the evening. We will be back."

  • "The Berkshire Pork Chop @ The Tortoise Club rocks! It is one of the best ever. Also, their Lobster Roll. No need to travel to Cape Cod. Service is attentive and friendly. Ambiance is rich & elegant. It is one of my favorite Restaurants in Chicago. Their Pheasant Pie in next on my radar."

  • "Wonderful 1940's sort of night club feel to it. Old school without being stuffy. The food was only okay, except the burger which was phenomenal (I am still thinking about it even though it was 4 months ago). The service was perfect and they make a mean cocktail. An overall fun experience. We will definitely go back."

  • "Food was great! i wish the brussels sprout salad was noted as cooked, which i was not expecting for an entree salad. Delicious with purple kale & light vinagrette, not overpowering. There were (3) of us, so we ordered a bottle as a better value, but if it I was the only one ordering wine, never would have purchased a glass. it amazes me how so many Chicago restaurants are charging the same $ for a glass of wine that you could purchase the entire bottle at Binny's. $17 for a glass of Simi cab???? A bit ridiculous."

  • "Nice place between Streeterville and the Loop. We started off with some Popovers and Steak Tartare, both of which are great. The butter for the popovers seemed to have a touch of orange marmalade which made it very pleasant. I ordered the Veal Medallions which were very tender and tasty. My wife ordered the Roasted Chicken Salad and seemed to be pretty satisfied with it. Afterwards, we shared a Turtle Sundae for dessert. Nice atmosphere but the restaurant can get a little noisy."

  • "It was a birthday celebration, and the Tortoise Club did not disappoint us! As always, the wait staff was engaging and attentive. We went with the dishes from their St. Patrick’s Day menu – delicious. Although too stuff to order dessert, our waiter, Eric, delivered a Michigan cherry pie with a scope of vanilla ice cream for the birthday boy. It was devoured in an instant! Our time in the bar was also a great experience. We would highly recommend one of their signature cocktails. The live music was perfect and most importantly, it was at an acceptable decibel for talking. It was a perfect setting to relax, talk, and have a drink with friends and family. Our birthday celebration was a hit! Thank you."

  • "A true test of a great restaurant is handling a busy holiday such as Valentine's Day; service, food and staff were humming as though it was just another night. We did not feel rushed or that we were just another couple on a busy night; service was excellent."

  • "Both the bar waitress and the front desk were very accomodating - my group grew from 3 to 5, and then while we were enjoying a cocktail at the bar grew again from 5 to 7. The attitude was great - "no problem," as they set up our table. Everyone in our party liked what they had (whitefish, veal, etc., while I had my old standby, the lobster roll) The three out of towners were very impressed by the atmosphere, the service and the food. If you tire of the overly hip, bare oak table, overpriced small plate restaurants in Chicago and want excellent food that is not over-fussy, this ironically is a change of place by being somewhat of a throwback."

  • "Rarely disappointed when I go to the Tortoise Club. The food is excellent as well as the service. Moreover, it is the welcoming attitude of management and staff which is the "cherry on top of the desert". Thanks for another great experience."

  • "I love the vintage look of the place. Trio of tar tares to start, was awesome. I had the pork chop with spinach and sweet potato mash this was excellent too. It took every once of my will power not to pick up the bones and gnaw at them. The lad y had some sort of beet salad and she said she liked it."

  • "First of all, the place has an awesome vibe - it just looks great. The drinks - delicious! Karen, the bartender, was a hoot. We hung out at the bar for a couple of drinks while waiting for a friend. We were never rushed to go to our table (as at this point it was past our reservation time), which I thought was really nice. Once we did move to our table, we met our waiter, Chimmey (sorry, not sure how to spell it), who was just outstanding. He never rushed us to order food, but described it in such a wonderful way that we ended up ordering a lot. The food was delicious. The portions were a perfect size to be able to enjoy an appetizer and dessert without feeling like a beached whale afterwards. Overall, it was a great experience."
