Two of us had the fish tacos and two had the chicken tacos. Ono fish in tacos was great accompanied by a fruit salsa and seasoned aioli spread. They were very good. Also had the ginger margarita which was very good and different. Nice find.

The chicken tortilla soup was light, spicy, and absolutely delicious. Ceviche was very fresh. Good margaritas. We should have stopped there. The rest of the meal was average and very overpriced for Mexican fare. Nice vibe though.

First- food was excellent, so if you don't really care about service, go. My friend had the steak fajitas and I had the short ribs. If you like spicy, the short ribs were amazing! But...we got there at 7 for a 7:15 reservation and were asked to wait at the bar or come back around 7:05. No problem, we're early. Walked around and came back at 7:05 and were seated at a table upstairs by the bar. We walked by 6 empty tables on the way? Our server was also the bartender which was not good. He was friendly but also taking care of all the drinks on that level so it took forever to see him, to get a second drink, etc. and he messed up the order so we had to wait even longer to eat. Again, food was good though, but took forever due to service.

My wife and I arrived to the restaurant with warm tones and neat decor. Our tequila drinks were fantastic. We ordered two appetizers, a large tortilla soup, and an entree... all of which we specifically asked to be staggered as we like to share... and all the food came at once after a good deal of time waiting. Since we had to eat like wolves while all the dishes were still warm, the meal was less than enjoyable and we asked for two of the things to be packaged up to eat reheated at home. The food was good and could have been great if brought out at staggered times. The service was below amateur and we will knock this one up to a brand new server that had never served before... ever... we all get one of those once in a great while.

Really like this place. Great ambiance, views and food. But... The waitress must have been in a hurry to get home. (We were there at 7:30PM) While we were looking at the menu (menus open, reading them) she asked us four times if we wanted to order. She wasn't happy we didn't order when she was ready. The minute we ordered each course flew out of the kitchen and was plopped on the table before we could finish what we were eating. If I wanted Dennys service I would have gone there instead.

I booked reservations here three weeks early for the last day of my hawaiian vacation with my partner. We had walked by two times prior on the day before and the place was busy as can be. When we arrived at 6:57 for our 7:00 p.m. reservation we found the place closed with a sign saying "closed for renovations". I'm sorry but you have my contact information from my reservation, Tortilla Republic, you should have contact me and told me you were canceling my reservation and putting a dark cloud on my last evening in Kaua'i. That, at a bare minimum, is called customer service. I would NEVER recommend this restaurant to anyone.

The team working at this restaurant are all excellent at what they do! They went out of their way to make sure our stay was enjoyable, starting on the phone when making reservations and all the way to the end when our plates were politely taken away with pleasant, short conversation. We spent the perfect night out at The Tortilla Republic and look forward to next time.

I have been to Tortilla Republic at least 20 times. I love the food and atmosphere and its what keeps me coming back but the service there is consistently extremely slow. This past visit we waited at least 10 minutes before anyone even brought us water and it was almost 30 minutes before my glass of wine appeared. The manager was more attentive than our server, noticing our drinks, chips, salsa, needed refilling when she did not. I realize we are on Kauai and the pace is slower, but that shouldn't apply to service.

When in Hawaii, I always eat fish, but every now and then I need Mexican food. We ate upstairs which has a more sophisticated menu than the more casual fare downstairs. Try the salsa tasting. Between the table, we had shrimp fajitas, carnitas and the short ribs. The short ribs were succulent and fork tender, the carnitas were saucy and tasty, the shrimp fajitas were OK - more veggies than shrimp. This place is worth a visit.

  • Great Guacamole appetizer
    mehmetVIP
    Dined on 6/21/2014
The best part of the meal was the tableside made guacamole appetizer. I had the fish (5 pieces of seared ahi on red and green peppers and cooked onions) fajitas, which was ok. One gripe, which may be personal to me, is that the chip salsa was reminiscent of canned enchilada sauce--very smooth, not chunky. I did not care for it, but that may be a peronal taste. The chips were good. There was a good selection of beer--Mexican, local Hawaiian, and mainland (like Budweiser). Some of the previous comments have faulted the service, which we found was outstanding. We may eat there again (we live in Kauai), but my recommendation is to have the guacamole appetizer and then a couple of appetizers for your main course.

The food was hit or miss. My catch of the day, Ono, was very over cooked on the grill and dry. I had to hack into it with a knife and pull it apart. My partner's steak fajitas came with only FOUR small pieces of steak on a mountain of peppers... Hardly $26 worth of fajitas. The salsa tasting was tasty and so was the flautas. We were excited to return after a nice experience two years ago, but I'm not sure we'll be back.

We dined upstairs (more of an upscale menu than downstairs menu) for the second time since moving to Kauai and the food was excellent as usual. On our previous trip, both my husband and I had the braised short ribs. EXCELLENT! This time my husband had the tortilla soup and carnitas. He raved about the flavor of the soup and the carnitas served in a tomatillo sauce was excellent. I had the fish and it was excellent as well. I highly recommend this place if you are in the Poipu area. As with most restaurants on Kauai, the prices are a bit on the high side, but well worth it!

Food was really good, I felt it was Mexican with an island or Hawaiian twist or flare. Overall I was satisfied and would go back. The table side gauc was great, the homemade chips were just as good. We split an app (chicken faltas?) and chicken fajitas. Both were good, not great. The staff was attentive. We sat upstairs, and the view is an open air style mall, so no beach or ocean, but it was a nice experience- it was a nice break from the more "formal" quiet dining places we had been to. I would definitely go back.

We picked this place, but ate upstairs and they didn't have the tacos up there...bummer, I really wanted them again! Very interesting ambiance in the main restaurant upstairs. Felt like I was in an upscale mainland city restaurant. The food is very unique and extremely tasty. We tried a little of everything and loved it all. However, be careful of the chocolate cake. It is made with hot peppers and burns the mouth. If you love spicy then I recommend the cake. The service was good but not great. But they were attentive. I recommend getting the tableside guacamole. The woman who prepared the guacamole for us was very friendly and helped make our experience memorable. I highly recommend trying this restaurant. *F*I*V*E* Stars for food and atmosphere.
