Diner Reviews
  • "Tasked with impressing my D.C. Foodie parents, I took them to Torino for my birthday to show them Michigan has good food too. Well, needless to say they were very impressed, mentioning that Torino could stand it's ground in any major city. The staff was excellent, the right amount of personable and professional- which is always appricated. Our food, surprising, interesting, and not leaving us overwhelmed. I loved trying new indeed owners such as lichen and flash fries roots, or introducing my family to fiddleheads, which we're the best I have ever had. After I forgot my ID when celebrating my 21st birthday, they offered me a drink on the house when I return- very thoughtful. Highly recommended for a celebration or romantic evening. "

  • "Had my first dining experience at Torino. Loved the food, location, wine etc. I think fixed tasting menu (that varies weekly) is a great concept and the portions were small but perfectly sized that you didn't feel overwhelmed at the end of the meal. My only small issue was we arrived for a 9pm booking (it was the only available time) and it felt like the meal was rushed because we were seating late, when we order a cocktail to start the staff told us the kitchen closed soon and so they would need to bring it and start the food at the same time. So if you want a relaxed meal, take an early time and enjoy the experience, its worth it. "

  • "It is amazing what the chef can do with such a small kitchen! Just amazing food, and servers are exceptional. They all help each other! Great experience!!!"

  • "Terrific flights of food and wine. Very creative, portioned just right so you aren't too full at the end. Every one of the courses and wines got an introduction by one of the wait staff and bartender. Keep in mind that all of the tables have both persons sitting on the same side so might be a little awkward for a business dinner."

  • "More cons than pros here. Sorry. There were some delicious ingredients and beautiful presentations during my seven-course tasting menu experience; but at this point in the course of American gastro-culture, the execution here is too fussy, way too pricey, and too reliant upon a hit-or-miss concept that almost completely missed on every course at the time of our visit. This might have been interesting ten years ago, but the only thing really ground-breaking here is that a place like this is in Ferndale."

  • "This week I spent an enjoyable evening at the Torino Restaurant in Ferndale. The format I have seen in Europe, but never in Detroit each course can with its signature wine. This enhanced the dinner experience greatly by accentuating each course and left me with wonderful memories. I also noted the extreme care and attention to detail displayed by all members of the Torino "crew," so refreshing!"

  • "We went to Torino's for a special occasion, and from start to finish, the dining experience was very special. Imaginative dishes, great wine pairings, friendly staff all work to create a nice atmosphere. Small and intimate, and definitely one to look forward to."

  • "This was one of the greatest dining experiences my husband and I have had. Very unique offerings with one of a kind flavor combinations. Extremely attentive staff."

  • "It's always a treat to dine at Torino. The Torino experience is more than just a meal. It's an adventure. For what you get and the feeling you walk away with, the price is a STEAL. Any other city in America, the same meal would be $500+ I can't say enough about this little gem and the all the wonderful people who work there."

  • "Presentation of each tasting was exceptional. Preparation of each tasting was extraordinary. Taste of each tasting was an adventure in combinations of unusual flavors and ingredients. Left you satisfied, like a long trip to an exotic island!"

  • "Very creative ingredients and unusual but delicious pairing of flavors- many layers to each dish. Beautifully presented in a tasteful modern interior. Comparable, if not better, to many restaurants I've tried in NYC, Chicago, etc. This is my go to restaurant when entertaining out of town guests- they are always impressed and delighted with this truly exceptional restaurant."

  • "We have eaten in the best restaurants in New York, Washington, Chicago, London, Paris and many other cities, and I would much rather eat at Torino than at any of them. The food is far more creative and tasty while still respecting the ingredients, and the servers and feel put the others to shame, just the right balance of casual and highly effective. This is our third trip to Torino and the main thing that has changed is the clientele. There is a new game we played this time, "Is that group here only because of the Free Press Restaurant of the Year Award?""

  • "We really enjoyed the creative menu items and the interesting, unexpected mix of flavors. Love the tasting menu format and it's well executed here, but it could use one more course, maybe two- it seemed too short. We ended up having a snack that evening, something we have never done after having tasting menus. So glad to see someone make a bold move like this in metro Detroit!"

  • "Torino has really upped their game. First, their always changing fixed price tasting menu is genuinely inventive. All courses were good, with a couple exceptional (the duck in particular was fantastic). The wine pairings are OK - I'd say more inoffensive than substantial compliments to the food. It also seems like they've really solved their kitchen capacity problem with the entire meal delivered within 90 mins or so (as opposed to the 3-4 hours it had taken before). Service is EXCEPTIONAL. I can't say enough about how their coordination of servers appears to be trying to mirror the sort of service you get in Michelin starred restaurants and, casual look aside, they do it really well."

  • "I cannot think of a meal in any country or city that stands out like the one we had on a Thursday night over 2 and 1/2 hours. The combination of flavors and scents, the wine pairings, the freshness, the attentive and knowledgeable service--all combined to make the single most fantastic dining experience of my life. And frankly, if the service had been bad, if the place was a dump, the quality of the food would have made up for it. Superb. Outstanding. 6 stars!"

  • "I knew before I arrived that this dining experience would be unique and Torino's did not disappoint. Each course was delicious and something I had not had before. The service was excellent. It was a pleasant surprise when we received a fresh table setting for each course. My friend and I thought we would not get enough to eat but we were both satisfied without being overstuffed at the end of the meal. I would recommend Torino's to anyone wanting and unique and classy experience."

  • "It was great! The food was awesome and for a tasting menu with this quality, the price was great. I would pass on the wine pairing next time, but it was worth it to do it once. The service was outstanding, the food was outstanding, it was just a great time. They were super accommodating, not snobs at all. Great opportunity to get dressed up and head out for a unique night"

  • "Everything was fantastic, a memorable food experience for the four of us. My second time there and every bit as great as the first. Nothing like it in Detroit. The chef/ owner knows his way around his food. I've been eating out for fifty years, it's in my top ten."

  • "Finally, truly innovative cooking comes to Detroit. The innovative thought of Grant Achatz mixed with an appreciation of Detroit need for seeming traditional style entrees with exquisite flavor, excitement and accompaniment"

  • "Torino was a fun and very unique dining experience. I love the pre set menu which forces you to try new things. Everything was very good but I had to say I was a little hungry at the end. I will be back for sure!"

  • "The atmosphere is casual, but the food is well executed. The menu changes weekly, and is a five course tasting menu. I have not had a dining experience in metro Detroit that is equivalent to Torino, so that is refreshing. I have been to similar restaurants, like Alinea, in Chicago. While I wouldn't go so far as to place these two restaurants on the same level, I appreciate the attention to detail in the food prepared at Torino. I wouldn't recommend Torino for picky eaters, but it's great for those seeking something unique. Given the small size of each course, I would have liked one more course. The wine pairings with each course were excellent. We felt a bit rushed in between courses which made the experience a little awkward."

  • "Overated, high priced and disapointing. Nice presentation but tastes were disapointing and not impressive. No atmosphere."

  • "Torino offers a tasting menu that changes weekly. The chef prepares five courses. Each course is a what I would call a small plate or tapas style portion and is delicious & artfully presented. We chose to partake of the optional accompanying wine selected for each course and they were all very enjoyable & paired with the food perfectly. The service was attentive, without being intrusive. We enjoyed the dining experience very much! The restaurant is modern and trendy and located in downtown Ferndale. It's pricey, but worth it! Highly recommend, especially for a special celebration."

  • "This is our third trip to Torino and I cannot tell you how much we enjoy dining here. If you have an adventurous palate and an open mind, then this is a place you absolutely must visit. The chef creates little plates filled with unique ingredients that are not only beautifully presented, but come together to create the perfect bite. The service in impeccable and the drink pairing is phenomenal. It may not be the least expensive meal you will find in this area, but it is worth every single bite. A great place for a romantic celebratory meal. We cannot wait to see what the creative minds dream up for our next experience at Torino."

  • "Best restaurant experience in Michigan! Torino reaches very high and pulls it off without missing a beat. Wonderful things happening from a tiny kitchen, young chef and a dedicated and enthusiastic staff. Accept the recommendations, turn down no options - you will be happy you did. The presentations and techniques bring on surprise and delight through every course, and portions are sized and timed to enjoy each fully. Wine pairings were fine. Menu pricing very reasonable compared to what one would pay in other cities that could offer this kind of a dining experience."
    Dined on 2/15/2014
  • "From the food to the overall experience, Torino's reputation for excellence is well deserved. The tasting menu provides a unique experience for the area, without sacrificing superb enjoyment of the food. We will definitely return in the near future"

  • "best meal I have had in Michigan since Eve closed in Ann Arbor several years ago."

  • "It was my second time going to Torino. It's pricey, but worth every penny. The concept is great and the execution is even better. The serving staff are very good as well. Each time I've been there, it's been a night to remember. I've recommended it to all of my friends."
    Dined on 2/13/2014
  • "This is a restaurant where I eat things that I think I don't like and I love them. This time I debated about looking at the menu online before we arrived, but I'm glad I didn't. There is something so pleasurable about not having to make decisions and having every course being a surprise (you do get the evening's menu when you arrive). The creative preparation of foods (e.g., almonds made into sort of a filagree cracker) and the amazing presentation makes every meal there an occasion. Try the wine pairing to see how the perfect wine can enhance food. This was our second time and often the return visit doesn't live up to the initial visit. But this did. Go there with people who appreciate food."

  • "Excellent - beautiful and top chef meal and experience. I was shocked that I had somehow over looked such a little gem in Ferndale. My partner and I did the wine pairing and I would highly recommend it to anyone going there for dinner. The food was excellent and visually stimulating ...but the wine pairing was spot on and kind of reminded me of our travels to the Napa valley. I would go back in a heartbeat and will recommend to all friends!!"
