Diner Reviews
  • "Fabulous dining experience, well spend 3 hours of fun with excellent service staff. Thumbs up. Not an everyday restaurant – defiantly for special occasions."

  • "From the minute we stepped in the door we were treated as very special guests. Service was beyond exceptional but the innovative dishes were the real stars - plan to spend a leisurely evening savoring and definitely do the wine pairings! We'll fly to Chicago just to fine here!"

  • "We been here several times and it keeps getting better. Had Tom as our server and he explained everything in an excellent fashion. Rick was in the kitchen and the manager took our spouses back for a quick picture. Food was awesome as always. Had the 5 course but could have been fine with 3. Raspberry desert changed my life. Goat..wow, unexpectedly awesome. This place is worth every penny. Just won't have many pennies when you leave."

  • "The food was amazing and different from other top Chicago restaraurants. A bit adventurous but very accessible. Most importantly it was delicious. We had the 7 course tasting menu with wine pairings. The whole meal was like a perfect concerto....each plate complimented the next and the wine pairings were amazing. But the best was the service. One of our guests had severe dietary issues and had called the restaurant before coming in to let them know. When arrived she was greeted by Oliver who had spoken to her on the phone. He proceeded to go through the menu and helped her create a 5 course meal with wine pairings that blew her socks off. I have dined with her before and know she has never received such personalized service."

  • "Let me first start off by saying that service was impeccable. Staff was extremely attentive. Food was good overall. Some dishes were excellent and some were a complete miss. It was an excellent experience and I am glad I tried it but I would not make a point of returning to this Rick Bayless restaurant. I have not been to Frontera Grill but it's on my list to try. I am a huge fan of XOCO and cannot wait to return."

  • "The food was excellent as usual. The only downside to this restaurant is the noise. It was impossible to have any conversation. This will not prevent me from coming back however. I just love their food. I just wish they could do something about the noise."

  • "We were in town for a special weekend & I've been looking forward to going to Topolobampo. I ate at Xoco last fall, the meal was great. I ate at Frontera, the Rioja wine & paired dish: AMAZING. At Topolobampo, the best dish was diver scallops cerviche. The scallops were tender, the heat delicate, it was a delicious dish. The Gazpacho, good. The potatoes, OK. The Sopa Azteca was delicious and complex, the Halibut not as billed, didn't seem like steak at all, Carne Asada's was one note. The lamb was good, but a little tough. The Lime and Coconut, very nice treat. Choc & Aromas, were good too. Tequilas were great, good recommendation by waiter. Good for my gluten-free friend! Overall, in consistent and sauces lacked complexity."

  • "We went with a group of friends the majority who were foodies. Outstanding service. The food was a conversation stopper as we all just hesitated to breathe in and fully experience the flavors. Then we spent time between courses to talk about the presentation, the flavors and ingredients. What a food adventure. Thank you Rick Baylis et al!!!!!'"

  • "Mexican food given very creative overhauls and reconstructions - and even some reconstructions! Very imaginative preparation and presentation with respect to the ingredients, culture and traditions if various regions of Mexico."

  • "We were a little confused by the menu at first, but by the end of the evening, we had several dishes and drinks. All amazing. Chef Padilla came out to visit some of his fellow New Mexicans. One of the best meals and experiences we've ever had."

  • "$274 was the total, after tip, for me and my fiance. We did 4 regular food courses and a dessert course. It was just enough food (meaning any less would have been too little) and while the flavors were truly fantastic, it's hard to justify $270 for a meal. Coincidentally, a girlfriend of mine went to XOCO on the same night (another Rick Bayless spot). She said it was a $32 check and it was delicious.... I think I would rather eat at XOCO 9 times than go to Topolobampo again."

  • "Hard to tell which was better - delicious creative food that mixed the familiar with new flavors or the attentiveness and knowledge of the staff. Our family (parents and two adventurous teenage sons) will be talking about this wonderful dinner for a long time. We downloaded the menu so we can go back figure out all 6 courses. The icing on the cake was realizing when we realized just before we left that the Baylesses were eating just 2 tables away."

  • "I wanted to check off a bucket list item - Rick Bayless at his best. And I got it. The food is amazing, surprising, delicious, thoughtful, cultural, truly best in class. My only complaint is that I could only get an 8:45p dinner reservation, and I ordered the 7-course tasting menu (choices are 3, 5, or 7 courses, not a la carte), and the meal took unpredictably long - 3.5 hours! We didn't leave until after midnight. The waiter's monologues about each wine were educational but stood between me and my hunger. If you plan to go all-in at Topolobampo, book early in the night so you can enjoy an amazing (long) meal."

  • "An amazing 7-course tasting experience, inventively paired with red wines, whites, and even sake. Tequila menu is lengthy and includes some truly unique and interesting flavors. Loved the place. Unrushed service - we were seated a little late on a busy Saturday night at 9 PM, and left at 1 AM."

  • " I along with various members of my family and with friends love to make Topolobampa or Frontera Grill an evening when we meet in Chicago. The food is fresh both in its innovation and content and the newly formulated flavors blend and complement the ancient cuisine upon which they are founded, never to "just to be nouveau". Wines were very well paired and our Mezcal cocktail delightful. Bravo. The staff was attentive, fun but not intrusive. I do not have a criticism."

  • "Have come here since it opened. It never fails to amaze. The menu has changed to smaller plates but with ample portions of exceptional dishes. Wine pairings were also excellent."

  • "booked this for dinner with me and a friend visiting from London. We were not disappointed. The food was amazing. We loved the smallish portions and the incredible flavors. We loved the thought that had gone into the food preparation. I am vegetarian and they extended every consideration to be sure I had a wonderful meal. Just a wonderful, memorable meal."

  • "Celebrated our 20th anniversary with 7 courses (including desert) of our choosing and paired wines. Wine pairings were well-made and creative. The food was just amazing. Big highlights were the goat barbacoa, the lamb in chile rojo, and the roasted new potatoes chileatole. The service was welcoming and attentive. Meal was well-paced (about 3.5 hours). One of the top experiences of our 20 years together."

  • "Lived in the Chicago area all my life. Big fan of Rick Bayless. I had never tried Mole. So I decided if I was going to try it, I might as well start with the best Mole in America! (Rick won the completion). Everything was fabulous. My husband loved it all. We would have licked our plates if we could have. We couldn't decide on what kind of tequila to have with our dessert and the manager suggested a flight. Perfect!"

  • "food was great but the service was terrible. It was 30 minutes before we got a menu. And we had to wave to get a their attention. We have dined many fine restaurants in Chicago and this was the first time we had to wave for the wait service. We will not go back and we will not recommend this restaurant to our friends. There are too many good restaurants in Chicago to put up with that."

  • "Went for 3-course lunch based on my experience 15 years ago--Topolobampo remains just as great. Wonderful balanced ceviche. Main course fish and beet crema were very good but were mild and a little lost in the flavor of the pea broth; the dish could also have benefited from more variation in texture. I did not understand the wine pairing with this dish; why no sommelier for wine pairings? Coconut ice cream fruit sopa and its wine were phenomenal. Dishes were explained well when I had questions. Service was very attentive and accommodating to early arrival and allergies. No problems hearing normal speaking voice (Frontera next door was loud). With the level of food, ambiance and service, this is a great value for a special lunch."

  • "The food was incredible! Some of the best we have had. The diver scallops and goat barbacoa were outstanding! We both had the three course meal and were very satisfied. Our waitress was very nice but forgot to bring us our appetizer. She apologized profusely and brought us some chocolates and jellied prickly pear candy to make up for it. She was not knowledgeable about the beer selection. I asked her what style a particular beer was, no idea. The beer selection was pretty dismal. It was a bit noisy. When the wait staff brought us our courses and tried to explain them, it was sometimes hard to hear. Overall, it was a wonderful experience and I would recommend this restaurant to people who appreciate unique and outstanding food."

  • "Some interesting notes to the food but not the stand-out we were hoping for. For example, the guacamole was "normal" (good but flat) but the mole source was very interesting and more of what we were looking for. Pretty short menu, which worked fine for us."

  • "Topolo is an amazing experience, albeit a bit pretentious, though that might be intentional. In my first visit, I was charmed by the warm and gracious service. This time around, it was cold and unremarkable. During both visits, everyone at our tables ordered the Chef's Tasting. Those diners received a remarkable experience. However, I ordered the vegetarian tasting both times, and both times it seemed like an afterthought. Everyone else got to hear stories about their dish, then mine was slopped down in front of me, with nary a description or any of the same ceremony. The price I pay for my beliefs, I suppose. Nonetheless, I would recommend the experience of Topolo."

  • "A friend flew into town and raved about the restaurant. Somewhat of a foodie, my expectations were high. Unfortunetly, I was disappointed. I have to first say, I'm not a huge fan of Mexican cuisine, but I went in with an open mind. The cervical was good, but margaritas too tart, so I switched to a blackberry basil margarita, which wasn't any better. Lunch, was ok, I had the ship quesaddilla, and my friend had the rib eye. Both we just ok. Very disappointed, as I expected so much more."

  • "I made reservations 2 months ago and was not disappointed. I had the "perfect" 7 dinner with wine pairings. Each selection was perfect."

  • "Slow service. (Each course came out 30-40 minutes later) whether it was an issue with kitchen or slammed because it's Saturday, it's unfortunate because food was good but tiny portions and very slow service. It's Mexican food no need to make it uber fancy."
    Dined on 6/28/2014
  • "While some courses were very good and even inspired, others were simply too complicated or were not up to the same quality. The cerviche was excellent as well as a salmon crudo but the mole was bland and beef dry. Most surprising was the ambiance. The restaurant was very loud such that we were unable to hear our waitress at times. The blue painted acoustic tile ceiling neither helped the decor nor the acoustics. Despite an extremely friendly and helpful waitress, the service was very slow: three hours for three courses of very small portions. Having said that, the portion sizes were perfect: not too big or too precious."
    Dined on 6/28/2014
  • "Service was very good. The server or runner or sommelier mixed up two of the courses, giving mine to my wife and vice versa, but we realized it quickly and the courses before and after were delivered exactly as they should be and with great care. We each did the 5-course option w/ wine pairing. The wine as OK, but not sure if I'd do the pairing again - some duplicates, but that's because of the courses we chose, I'm sure. They're extremely knowledgable nonetheless. 2 of the 10 courses missed the mark, but the rest were unreal! Be sure to enjoy a margarita before (or during) your meal. They are incredibly good."

  • "Topolo's atmosphere is more energetic than most fine dining experiences, being directly, physically connected to the rest of the Bayless empire. We were initially taken aback by the pure noise level. That changed, after being seated at a perfect table and being served two excellent mescal and tequila cocktails. We knew we were in for a treat. With Rick Bayless' pedigree, experience, and critical acclaim, we expected the food to be good - but not this amazing. We lived in Mexico City for three years - and this was the best fine dining Mexican cuisine we've had since we moved back to the US. With the help and encouragement of our excellent server, we put together our own four-course tasting menu, and had our best meal in quite some time."

  • "Topolobampo is of course an outstanding restaurant in terms of creativity, flavors, freshness and service. I have had great meals both here and at Frontera Grill. This time, of 12 plates ordered among 4 people, only 2-3 of them were recognizable (goat and salmon). The explanation of the menu was like a Master's level lecture. I could not tell what I was eating. Sauces were poured at the table without explanation. My husband could not tell me what he was eating. Everything was delicious, but I felt like I had tasted 100 things by the end, without knowing what or why. I would like Rick Bayless to go a little bit back to basics."

  • "I went here based on a glowing recommendation. I didn't think the restaurant lived up to the hype or the price. The food was lackluster, and the server was too eager to up-sell everyone at my table. What's more, the restaurant itself seemed to be having an HVAC problem--it was very warm. Finally, for such a fancy restaurant, the restroom was in a sorry state. Like I said, I went based on a glowing recommendation, so maybe it was an off night."

  • "My husband and I enjoyed a late lunch at Topolobampo. The Yucatecan Ceviche was light and fresh with vibrant citrus finishes. As for an entree my husband had the Carne Asada which was unlike any I have ever had before. It came with small bites cook to perfection a nice medium rare. The outside was encrusted with spices that will blow you away. Definitely spicy but in a way that you keep asking yourself what it is. Portions are small but the flavor makes you feel as if you just ate a big meal. We both had a Blackberry Basil Margarita which was beyond my expectations. Can be a little pricey so lunch was a great option."

  • "Made a 9:00 pm reservation and still had to wait 20 min! Didn't get out food until after 10. VERY EXPENSIVE and very small portion sizes. Drinks were small too. $200 later, we left hungry and picked up fast food on the way home. Not worth it!"

  • "I really don't understand the hype for this restaurant. For what the experience provided, the food was tremendously overpriced. Every course we ordered, with the exception of the "trio, trio, trio" suffered from the same confused flavor palette and overwhelmingly heavy sauces. The combinations sound (and look) much better than they taste. I imagine a much more satisfying and tasty meal can be had at Topolobampo's sister restaurant, Frontera. I will say the margaritas were pretty great and the service was good."

  • "We have eaten many times next door but this took the meal to the next level. Lots of great complex flavors all come together in great presentation. Way quieter than space next door...really nice. Service was great except when waitress got involved with two new parties that sat down and our dinner came and we needed our wine pairings...which were great with each course."
    Dined on 6/26/2014
  • "We always really enjoy dining at Topolobampo, Frontera and it's sister venues. This is our first disappointment as both the food and service were not of the same quality or standard that we have experienced in the past. We feel quite let down as we chose to dine there to celebrate a special occasion."

  • "Still my favorite restaurant in Chicago. We especially love coming here for lunch! The food is marvelous. The favors explode in the mouth. Special this time was the Black Cod entree and the strawberry shortcake dessert."
