Diner Reviews
  • "Everything was perfection except for the table being right by the kitchen and having to walk through the kitchen to go to the restroom. The carne asada with mole sauce beats anything I have ever tasted from Mexican cuisine."

  • "My husband and I have gone here for years (like most Chicagoans) and have loved it every time we go. Their new style menu- containing recipes found 1671 Mexico, was INCREDIBLE. The flavors were exciting and very different from anything we had ever ordered at Topolo. We suggest you try it, but be weary of the portion size- they're bigger than you'd expect for a 7 course meal!"

  • "Ordering a 3 course and a 5 course meal was plenty for my wife and myself. The food melted in my mouth it was so good. A great evening and worth the price both because of the food and the service."

  • "We had an amazing dinner there! The food was incredible, with lots of flavors on each plate. Highly recommended!"

  • "All the choices we had were excellent. What really sets this restaurant apart is the exceptional and intriguing combination of flavors in every dish. This is not an inexpensive restaurant by any means, but it's certainly worth the price for s special occasion, Highly recommended."

  • "Was lucky to get a reservation on fairly short notice while in town for a conference - so glad I did! A create your own tasting menu with truly unique dishes prepared to perfection! Yum!"

  • "It's the first time I try Mexican food, that deserves a Michelin-star - in Europe we only know tortillas and guacamole when we think of Mexican food, so this was really a treat - and the service was 3* (Michelin-stars that is:-) ) I will definitely be back!"

  • "Loved the Chicken Tortilla Soup. The menu process is different than typical restaurant but once explained then it is manageable. Definite must have experience."

  • "As usual Rick Bayless hit it out of the park. the food was extraordinary, and the drinks were yummy and the service was attentive but not hurried. A 5 star experience all the way."

  • "Everything was perfect. The service was off-the-chart outstanding. The venison course in particular stood out in an overall outstanding dinner."

  • "Haven't eaten here in a couple of years. The menu is now fixed price. We had tortilla soup, roasted hen, enfrijolatas, and cajeta crepes. The lemon margarita was great. Tortilla soup was good but salty. The roasted hen tasted good, but the serving was the size and thickness of 2 half dollars. Enfrijolatas is a tortilla with a small amount of cheese and pureed bean as a sauce. Enfrijolatas cost about 30 cents to make. The cajeta crepe desert was outstanding. We have eaten at many Mexican influenced restaurants - Mexique, Adobo, Salpicon, and Tahin in Chicago, and San Angel Inn, and Gotan in Mexico City.... they are all better values. I used to love this restaurant, and unless they change it back we won't be eating here again."

  • "The experience started with wilting flower arrangements, a frantic front desk and an inappropriate coat check lady. Crowded shabby dining room with cheap banquettes and '80's lighting. AM radio Spanish music. Margaritas and oysters were the only good things. Food was luke warm and bland. So glad I did not fall for the wine pairings. This restaurant is purely a tourist trap. Rice cakes were gummy, other courses were tasteless. Beet salad had strangely chewy beets. Fish was tiny and bland. Waiters were way too chatty. If you are going to spend $300 for dinner, go to Spiaggia where the room is lovely, serene, uncrowded and the service is excellent, as is the food. If you feel a need to sample Rick Bayless, have a torta at O'Hare."

  • "I’m afraid the onslaught of amateurism made for the most joyless dining experience I can remember in a Michelin-starred restaurant. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the dining room manager who did his best Hank Paulson impression in trying to rescue this Lehman Brothers of a meal, but the errors on the plate were beyond his control."

  • "Our experience was wonderful. We had a waiter with such passion for the food. He and the other staff described each course in such a way that we felt we understood the "why" behind the plate. The "Perfect Seven" was just that. My only regret: not pacing myself better."

  • "This was my first visit to Topolobampo as I do not live in Chicago. The visit was worth the effort. Bayless' new menue had just debuted. His menu choices are complex, sophisticated and delicious. I took two clients with me and they sopped up every drop of sauce from each dish. Photo worthy presentations. Great wine list with many unusual choices and the sommelier can help for those who are unfamiliar with some of the wines."

  • "I've had Topolobampo on my must experience list for years and finally visited Chicago with a free night and a shot at late night reservations. Big bummer. What a waste of time and money. My dinner partner and I felt this place was all formula, past glory and completely lacking in flavor finesse. Yes, sure there were some unusual combinations of flavor but so what, doesn't mean it tastes good. I wish I had that night back for a different fine dining experience in Chicago."

  • "The food and service at Topolo was a truly wonderful experience. The servers are very knowledgable about the menu and will walk you through each item, helping you to select the tasting menu best suited to you - giving you a bit of an education along the way! Each dish is presented beautifully and you are served in courses, which I think greatly adds to the enjoyment of the meal as you savor every taste and enjoy the company of your dining companion(s). And of course, the food itself is worth savoring. Each new combination is complex and well-balanced. The menu is so well thought-out and the chefs and servers so well prepared that I believe it would be hard to go wrong with any dish you choose. We smiled the whole night."

  • "When asked my favorite restaurant in Chicago, it is Topolobampo! The food is so flavorful and delicious, the ambience is perfect (the right balance between romantic and lively), and the service is always impeccable."

  • "We made special plans to dine at this restaurant because we are big fans of Rick Bayless from TV. Although the food was good, it was more interesting than delicious. I had certainly planned to spend a lot of money but the food was not worth what it cost. There were several other Chicago restaurants that had far superior food that still was "expensive" but worth every penny."

  • "This was our second visit to the restaurant. Our first visit was one year ago as we were visiting Evanston for a conference, and Topolobampo has been our our minds (and tongues?) ever since. Wonderfully stellar food - rich, unique taste combinations that were absolutely worth the price. The menu is seasonal, but we loved the scallops, the snapper, the sopa azteca, the walleye, and the arctic char. And the mole was fantastic - it's what brought us back for this second visit. They offer wine pairings with the tasting menu, but we choose the classic Topolo Margarita with no regrets."

  • "Any of Rick Bayless' places are amazing. This location is especially nice if you want to chat AND have wonderful food. The seviches are outstanding and fun to share. Sopa Azteca.....yummy!! It is always a treat to eat great Mexican food!"

  • "My partner chose the 1491 dishes and was very pleased. Because we though we would share the three courses we chose, I chose other dishes, which was a mistake. There was not that much to share, and the dishes I chose were very good in a couple of cases, but nothing special. One dish was a great disappointment: Lamb in Mole de Calabaza: Smoky, slow-cooked lamb "porchetta," pumpkin mole (ancho, tomato, spices, pepitas), roasted sunchokes, fingerlings. There was more "porchetta" than lamb. I ate the porchetta so as not to leave hungry, and some of it was indigestible--I went to the rest room to spit it out."

  • "Went to Topo specifically for the 1491 Mexico City menu. Fantastic - from amuse to dessert, we were amazed at how much flavor Chef gave us without dairy or gluten. This was probably the healthiest fine dining experience we will ever have and it was also the most decadent. The Chefs at Topolobampo are flavor magicians! The staff was so friendly and attentive as well. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "I've known the Bayliss group for years. Have dined at Frontera, XOCO, and the airport joints. Love his food and respect Rick's community commitment. My first (and last) visit to Topo was a mild letdown. Had sent my husband and his business partners here several years ago. They loved it. Went with my own little group this evening. Something is different now... it is diminished in its impact. Service and pacing are entirely too slow for such small plates. Ninety minute from when we walked in the door until the first morsels made it to the table. We had to beg for a tortilla basket to help us with the wine while we waited for some food. The food is superb, but the experience shouldn't require 3 hours."

  • "My husband and I were here to celebrate our Anniversary and were looking forward to it. We did not have to wait and were taken at our reservation time, we did the 3 course meal. The whole experience was great until I found a hair in my meal! I let the waiter know about this and he seemed to be the only one that actually felt bad that this happened. The manager came to our table and explained that he does not know how this happened and that it was a very thick hair and that maybe it was one of my eyelashes. As a manager how do you come up to the customer and try to turn this around on them. This changed my mind about the whole experience because of one person."

  • "Topolobampo's new menu is a hit. The small plate concept with 3, 5 or 7 dishes is a fantastic way to savor Rick Bayless's creative Mexican cuisine."

  • "We've watched Rick Bayless on TV for years and have always wanted to eat at one of his restaurants. The gourmet food was fabulous, the staff was so knowledgeable and attentive. The atmosphere was intimate and romantic. It's pricey to be sure, but great for a very special occasion."

  • "While visiting Chicago my husband and I had dinner at topolobampo. We had been there one time about 10 years earlier. On both occasions we found it to be wonderful. the food is very interesting and very well prepared. The menu is amazing. When we were there there was a special menu featuring only foods that were available in Mexico in 1491. What an interesting challenge for the cooks. My only issue is that I am a vegeterian and the menu is heavily meat oriented so my choices were somewhat limited but I was able to have a delicious and interesting meal. We would go there more often if we did not live in Seattle."

  • "Struggled ordering with new menu format, not good selection, prefer tasting themes of the past..Off night for chef, gift of mixing unique flavors not there. Crab and scallop dishes just terrible, beef dish good and popular but not why I dine here, we have Gibson's. Chocolate dessert perfection but coconut gelato no flavor and better in Mexico. Waiter too many tables to manage. Charged $5 more for wine than listed on menu. Because food subpar not sure I'll be back for my semi-annual visit. Master Chef magic is gone."

  • "topolobampo fulfilled our expectations. the food was very good, and the amuse bouche and after-dessert bites were a very nice touch. i would recommend the carne asada/prime rib, lamb, the ceviche trio, sopa azteca, and the dessert crepes. the only disappointment was that i had notified them in advance that we were celebrating a birthday and they confirmed they would bring out a dessert with a candle - but they didn't. it was also a little cold/drafty in the restaurant."

  • "The 5 courses were uneven. For the money, I expected more."

  • "Topolo switched to the new fixed pricing menu. I rather enjoyed that approach as I could order 5 items, my wife ordered 3, and then we could split all of the items and have the exact amount of food we wanted. I would go back, but only for less gimicky months. The food itself was of superior quality, but the menu theme for March is pre-Columbian food, so the "ancient" ingredients that were used did not taste as good to me. I know that it should be a point of interest but to me it came off as gimicky and less enjoyable food. I also had the menu manhattan, which I found too sweet when made with agave syrup. My wife loved the margaritas esp the champagne margarita."

  • "the food was amazing one of my favorite resturants in chicago"

  • "Rick Bayless has an exceptional reputation in Chicago and I anticipated a higher level of quality. Our waitress was distracted because there was a rude/disgruntled table right next to ours and she unfortunately had to deal with that so it took almost 25 minutes to get drinks and to hear about the menu. It was a rough start to the night since we too had to be distracted by the table complaining next to us. The menu choices were limited and required explanation. We enjoyed everything that we ate and the quality of ingredients was suburb but the overall feeling of the evening was not what we expected. I am glad I went to experience it but would not go back and amongst a sea of amazing restaurants in Chicago I am not sure I would recommend it."

  • "I took my wife to Topolobampo for her birthday and we were not disappointed. The food was fantastic (we did the seven course selection with the wine pairing) and the service was even better. Every dish exceeded our expectation. It was great to see Chef Rick Bayless walking the floor and talking to customers. Fantastic experience."
