Diner Reviews
  • "My wife and I decided to spend our date night at a fish restaurant, partly due to Lent. We loved the octopus salad, and found the trout deviled eggs intriguing. My spicy scallop crab linguini was satisfying, and her scottish salmon was nice. The desserts were great. We left very satisfied, and enjoyed our well paced dinner time."

  • "My wife and I had lunch here - it was so good we invited our business group to join us for dinner a few days later. 6 people, not a single complaint about anything! We started with Kumamoto oysters and Bloody Mary's, then king crab, swordfish, and other dishes. The snickerdoodle dessert is not to be missed. Great service, great food, great location."

  • "Always a favorite for my husband and I for date night or entertaining friends. Perfectly prepared and bountiful selection of fresh catch plus plenty to please guests looking for food without fins. Top of the Market is the quieter, cozier dining room above the lively, family-friendly, group friendly Fish Market Restaurant overlooking the lagoon at Fashion Island. Quiet enough to enjoy an evening enjoying food, wine, dessert, and solving the worlds problems. Whether you love your fish simply grilled, battered sigh chips, raw or creatively sauced you will love the choices. Wonderful variety of salads too."

  • "I have been to top of the market several times. This was the first time we had problems with our order. First iced tea was brought out as iced coffee. Then a special food allergy request was ignored. Food was wonderful but I was disappointed in the number of mistakes this trip generated."

  • "We unfortunately got seated next to a large family party with a loud child/screamer. Not what we usually get at this upscale seafood establishment. Also, restaurant so busy, the food took longer than it should have for delivery!"

  • "Food and service was excellent, however, this restaurant is above the very popular Fish Market restaurant. We went on a Saturday night and it was difficult to find parking (we eventually did when someone else left the lot)."

  • "Have a red eye leaving SFO. This is a good choice for dinner. Very good food, generous portions, and excellent service. They tout their "view" but the seats that actually give you a view (especially at night) seemed few and far between. Worth going back however. Great seafood and pasta, and not horribly expensive. Its definitely on my short list of pre SFO choices."

  • "I took my elderly mother out to dinner for her birthday. The food and service are great but we almost didn't get to enjoy them because there is a long steep interior staircase one must climb to get to the restaurant and no elevator. With effort and assistance she did get up ( and later back down) the stairs, but it was not ideal."

  • "Good restaurant for seafood, great service. Smoked fish platter is delicious. Crab Salad wonderful."

  • "Our pleasant, enthusiastic waitress convinced us to try some excellent dishes we otherwise wouldn't have, such as a tender, delicious octopus salad. Many wines by the glass, including a choice of 5 or 6 Sauvignon Blancs. The Arctic Summer dessert is perfect to share with your sweetie. Warm fresh fruit with a slightly sweet sauce paired with vanilla ice cream. All enjoyed while overlooking a slough of SF Bay populated with ducks and seabirds at sunset. Perfect Friday night out!"

  • "Reservations for Top of the Market (TOTM) 4 people; friends not visited before. Restaurant buzzing when entered front of restaurant, ascended stairs to TOTM, the noise level reduced dramatically to a pleasant level, asked waiter which Chardonnay to order, brought sample of each, we decided, ordered sushi and chowder, myself and other male patron ordered waiter recommended Spicy Seafood Stew (I'd ordered before), very satisfying for both of us, contained variety of seafood, also added Mediterranean Octopus, very good. Ladies had scallops and Petrale Sole, on waiter suggested bed of butternut squash and spinach replacing menu listed cauliflower and raisins. The meal ended with a dessert of Arctic Summer, italian Cream pastry and wine sampler."

  • "A friend I hadn't seen for 15 years was sent to Foster City on business. She had little free time and no transportation, so I had to find a place both convenient to her hotel and worthy of our reunion. Top of the Market came up on my search and proved to be exactly what we wanted. The room was charming and quiet enough for our catch-up conversation. My seafood stew was perfectly spiced and had fresh and delicious scallops, mussels, clams and calamari. Her sea scallops were cooked just right and came with an assortment of vegetables. Our waitress helped her pair it with one of their house wines. We then shared a freshly baked fruit crisp for dessert. I'll definitely keep this restaurant in mind the next time I'm in that area."

  • "My husband and I enjoy having a variety of appetizers with soup or we sometimes will split a pasta. It is a great way to get a lot of taste treats!"

  • "We had reservations. I was a couple minutes late, but as soon as I gave them my name I was directed to my seat. Excellent service, FRIENDLY staff. Seafood was excellent. Great presentation, and the waiter was very attentive. Great place for family, or business meetings."

  • "Food was excellent. But it took forever to order dessert, be told the ordered dessert is no longer available, and the other dessert never showed. We finally asked for the check and the waiter insisted that the single scoop of ice cream is coming. No, thank you! 15 minutes is more then a courtesy wait for a single scoop of ice cream."

  • "While I enjoy nouveaux cuisine, too many times chefs take away from classic cuisine. Top of the Market prepares a variety of seafood simply perfectly. Wonderful oyster and clam selection. One of favorite places -- which we enjoy even more since the remodel. Lovely view over the water adds to the ambience. Strongly suggested."

  • "We have been many times at the fish market restaurant downstairs which was good, but noisy. This time we wanted quite Tim with our friends and we made reservation upstairs. I requested a window table and they accommodated us perfectly. We have ordered clam chowder soup, grilled octopus, calamari fish and chips and a seafood stew. We asked family style and they divided main courses at the kitchen. Service was fantastic. Food just right. Overall we had a good time. Will be back soon."

  • "Celebrated my 83rd birthday at the Top of the Market on Jan 6. We have been there several times, but not for over a year this time. All OK. If anything it has improved since our last visit. Very enjoyable, but quiet celebration for us. Dave Schulz"

  • "Dishes have very little flavor and practically no seasoning. Pasta chewing. Sauces do not match appetizers served - ajioli or tarter should accompany crab cakes, not a spicy brown mustard. Smoked salmon fetticini had very little salmon and was bland."

  • "We have dined at Top of the Market many times as this is our "go to" place for special occasions. This is the first time that we were truly disappointed. In the past, we have always recommended this place as worth the extra cost because the food was excellent and the ambience was a bonus. Not too sure that we would recommend the restaurant after this experience."

  • "Needed to find a place between San Francisco and San Pedro. This was a great choice ! All the fish was excellent. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meal."

  • "Celebrated my wife's birthday on a Friday night before Christmas. Everything was OK - service, location, food. Only "complaint" that I had was that the food could have used a little more seasoning. Other than that, a good time was had by all..."

  • "A longstanding, well-known neighborhood spot for great seafood. Better than I had expected upstairs at Top of the Market. I hadn't been in a long time. Entree prices are in the upper 20's to 30's but the food was excellent. Food worthy of a fancy, trendy SF restaurant but atmosphere very down-to-earth. Service very good as well. Definite recommendation."

  • "We had dinner the evening after Thanksgiving. Downstairs, the Fish Market was very noisy. Upstairs at Top of the Market, where you can make reservations, I was surprised at how many tables were available, which of course affected how quiet it was. There was a larger group in the room at the back which is where we had been slated to sit, but our waiter offered us a booth in the front part so that we could have a quieter dining experience. Very much appreciated! I suspect that on a busier night, the noise level would be "moderate" rather than "quiet" in the rating scale. The entrees were in the $26 range. The menu is very different from downstairs. More upscale. The food was delicious. Our waiter was knowledgeable and very helpful."

  • "Even though we had reservations for upstairs, we were immediately seated down stairs in the main main dinning room. The saving factor was the service offered by our wait person, Paul. He was multi-lingual and made a member of our party at ease, as she is hispanic and made the description of the dishes more familiar and easier to decide. The food was very tastefully prepared and had eye appeal as well tasting delicious."

  • "I got a grilled prawn salad which really should be relabeled as a grilled bay shrimp salad. I think a fish restaurant would know better."

  • "Salads were best: we had the beet salad and octopus salad - both were so inventive and delicious that the main course paled in comparison. She enjoyed her scallops. My sole was a little dry and boring. But the sides were tasty."

  • "Interesting menu choices compared to the Fish Market below. White tablecloths with a more private setting provided a more elegant atmosphere. No elevator and lots of stairs limit the patrons for this great view. Request a window seat if there are just two of you."

  • "I had not been here in a few years and Top of the Market did not disappoint. We had a variety of appetizers and great entrees as well as the gelatos of the day. It was all fantastic. Our service was just right, attentive but not over the top. I never thought I would reccommend smoked trout but it was amazing."

  • "The service was very good! However, a large group of 12 was seated close to us about 1/2 way through dinner and that was the last conversation we were able to have. The food was so so. We've had better down-stairs and at a more appropriate price for the same.... thought the food would be a "step-up", but were disappointed and with the noise level, we didn't bother to stay for coffee or dessert! Too bright inside to see any view outside. Not would not bother to make a special date there again!"

  • "I have been to the Fish Market a couple of times over the past 10 years, and never realized Top of the Market existed. What a delightful surprise to find a classier, quieter version of the Fish Market with even better food and a great view of the lagoon. On the basis of yelp reviews, we ordered the calamari and the grilled octopus salad as appetizers. Especially if you have had octopus elsewhere, you will be amazed at how tender and flavorful grilled octopus can be. The calamari was also tasty-very lightly battered, and with two tasty dipping sauces. They definitely know how to cook fish. Truly a delightful evening."

  • "GREAT place. Don't miss it! Wander a bit and. Check out all the old black and white fishing photos on the walls of the main floor."

  • "They recently did a mini-remodel here - same floor plan but the look is fresh and contemporary. The menu was also updated but you can still order from the downstairs menu - however we ordered from their menu and it was fabulous - we ordered Calamari Fritte and the calamari was fresh with a very light batter - delicious. I had the scallops and they were heavenly and then we ordered 2 desserts (well, it WAS for a birthday celebration!) and both were amazing. We weren't sure of which wine to order by the glass and were brought tastes to try - had the same thing happen at the downstairs bar on a prior visit. Fabulous service and good food - if you haven't been here for awhile or have never been, it's worth a trip!"

  • "I've visited several Fish Markets along the west coast and the San Mateo location is always great. View in San Diego is a little better, however, the service and food quality in SM is fantastic. Thanks to the staff and JT for a wonderful meal."

  • "We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the crab on our little gem salad!! Very fresh and the salad was prepared exceptionally well. Our chowders were full of clams and that is a rarity. The upstairs is more subdued and the downstairs more casual. I would like to try the downstairs next time and I wish I lived in the south bay to frequent this place more."
