Diner Reviews
  • "This was the fourth time I have eaten here. Excellent as always!!!!!!"

  • "Long wait times, open table sped up to some degree. Running out of food (had to substitute muscles for clams) because they weren't prepared for the crowd. The food that did come tasted good but would expect better service and speed for the price. Unlikely to eat there again."

  • "Erica was our wait person. She was wonderful. Excellent knowledge of the wine list and wineries. Good recommendations for dinner."

  • "The Fish Market continues to offer the best fresh fish selection in the San Diego area. The Top of the Market has a more limited selection of fish than the downstairs Fish Market. The service is great at the Top of the Market. I just wish they would offer more simple preparations without the excessive cream and butter."

  • "Our second time was again wonderful: wonderful food, wonderful service & wonderfully fun view!"

  • "We arrived an hour early for our dinner reservation. So, we sat at the end of the food/drink bar and were immediately asked our drink order and it was served by Jake (excellent cocktails.) Our dinner table was on the glassed-in porch with a Bay view out two sides! The veggies that came with my lobster tail were scrumptious. My husband's scallops/shrimp pasta dish was also awesome. Wonderful memories."

  • "The parking lot was packed. The restaurant was packed and as a result I nearly had to shout to talk to my table mates. I repeatedly had to say "what" to have them repeat what they said. I had a Caesar Salad which was mediocre - two wedges of lettuce with a sauce sprinkled on top and what I can only guess were supposed to be little anchovies on the side. It did not have the taste of a Caesar Salad. The Cioppino was excellent. Had everything else been up to the Cioppino, I would have rated the restaurant a five."

  • "Have been here several times. The upstairs restaurant is the best. Not quite so noisy/crowded. Seating on the back balcony is good unless the people near you are loud(or ill mannered children). Food is always good, well prepared. Simple, nothing real fancy. More along the lines of Legal Seafood back east. Waitstaff is friendly, helpful. It is one of those restaurants that you can always count on."

  • "We had a reservation for 8:30. Arrived slightly early, very brief wait. The restaurant was very clean, quiet, and calm. The view from inside was acceptable, outside would have been amazing. Our waitress was attentive, informative, and very nice. Our appetizer (calamari) and drinks arrived quickly. Our entrees were everything we expected them to be. The food was amazing. I had the seared sea scallops and my husband had the ciopinno. The bread with the dipping sauce was incredible. I have to figure out how to make it. The price is right for the restaurant. We will be dining here again."

  • "I had a wonderful experience at Top of the Market with a business partner and three vendor colleagues from out of town. Everything was terrific, from the bartender to the waitress, the harbor views, appetizers, entrees, wine, and dessert. I highly recommend everything about it."

  • "Great service, amazing location, fantastic food, but, like all three restaurants I brought a group to in San Diego it was terrible at splitting the bill. I'm from Canada and where I come from any 18 year old can figure out how to do that. It took 30 minutes at top of market and the poor waitress was stressed out."

  • "Went here with our kids and another couple and their two kids. Great time. Fantastic food. Great service. Will be back again very soon."

  • "I asked for window seating, which we got. The view was spectacular even on a somewhat overcast day. The staff was very friendly and personable and not overly solicitous. The swordfish tacos were delish. Did I mention the Diamond Blood Marys? Our server (Caleb) overheard us toasting Happy Birthday to a member of our party and to our surprise brought out a candle lit chocolate dessert - heavenly! Parking was a little cray, but treat yourself, use the valet service."

  • "I made a reservation on Open Table. We were greeted and seated promptly. We were seated by a window outside with a breathtaking view. There was a draft coming through so it was closed quickly. The server was knowledgable and friendly. My vegetarian friend was accommodated with vegetable pasta. We had tasty wine, delicious dinners, and decadent desserts. This was a great evening with friends celebrating our race the next morning. We will return and tell others who are ever in the SD area."

  • "I have dined at the Top of the Market several times but unfortunately this time I thought the service was slow and the food mediocre and served just warm. Guys you are going to have to do better to keep my business."

  • "Had a 5pm dinner reservation that was obtained via Open Table. Food was very good and the view of the SD harbor was very scenic. Saturday afternoon, there was considerable traffic congestion and a shortage of parking in the restaurant parking lot. Overall a very good experience! Will go back for a special occasion."

  • "Located on the upper floor of the Fish Market, Top of the Market serves fresh catch of the day in style and cooked to perfection. Everything on the menu is delicious and to top it off they have the best customer service in town when it comes to dining. I made reservations a few hours before dinner and I ended up arriving early. We were treated as top priority and seated us promptly. You have to dine here and experience what this place is all about."

  • "We so enjoyed our dinners. I had a huge lobster with a spicy sauce and my wife had a melt in her mouth seabass? Parking would have been a problem if not for their valet service. The waiter was attentive without being annoying-a very pleasant guy. We'll go back as soon as we find the time."

  • "Top of the market has a fabulous fish menu. We loved the bread and delicious dip before our meal. We tried everything from the mussels,Dover sole, halibut, children's pizza, to scallops, and lobster bisque. We loved the view and watching the sunset over the water."

  • "Every time I have guests come to San Diego to visit I take them straight from the airport to Top of the Market to dine. The seafood is always fresh and the service is impeccable. I'm never disappointed. On the way out I stop by the seafood counter and purchase fresh fish for my next dinner. Last night we had the best rockfish I've ever eaten."

  • "We took some friends from Canada and Nevada. The outdoor table we had was perfect. Great view of the bay and surrounding areas. Service was second to none. The food was awesome. We were not rushed, so we had a wonderful visit. $$$$$"

  • "Everything was full of black peper destroying the nice and fresh seafood taste Seafood tastes better just with olive oil ans salt You should ask customers if they want peper, instead of adding peper to Appetizers, salads, seafood, pasta, fish, etc It destroys your taste buds Will not be back"

  • "This used to be one of my favorites but now would not go back. The food was mediocre (too heavily salted, seasoned, oily). For my main course I had what was called grilled salmon. The salmon had no grilled taste and was very rare, in fact, it was so heavily seasoned that I could not distinguish between the fish and the sides which were all very oily. The service was robotic with the only bright spot being the people who were busing. My husband enjoyed his main course (seared yellow fin tuna) but shared my opinion about the service."

  • "While many would be quick to damn this establishment as just another tourist trap, such an admonition would be based purely on a cynical life view. This restaurant is the rare case of an obvious choice being a truly exquisite choice. A must try for special occasions."

  • "Fabulous ahi poke. Sea bass was a little thinner than expected but delicious all the same. Minor bobble on being seated early when there were oodles of empty tables. Great service and an overall wonderful place to go. Always try and make it here when I'm in town."

  • "The service was slow and unattentive. The food was fair but nothing special. All in all it was a disappointing experience."

  • "Overlooks San Diego Bay and has great seafood. It does have a few other non seafood items but never ordered them. We go for their seafood which is always wonderful. Josh, our waiter was very pleasant and helpful. Our dining experience was exceptional."

  • "Wonderful near downtown fish centric restaurant with great views of the bay. Swordfish, John Dory and Dover sole were beautifully presented and perfectly prepared. Worth a bit of a splurge"
    Dined on 2/28/2014
  • "The food was ok but subpar for the price. My lobster tail was tough and my wife's swordfish only fair. My vegetables were over cooked and tasteless and mushrooms were rubbery. Our waitress was minimally engaged and had zero warmth or personality. She brought one check for our two couples and acted put out when we asked her to split it. The atmosphere was ok but it was too loud to have a decent conversation. I wished we had gone elsewhere."

  • "Beautiful view. Fresh fish. Average menu. Nice wine list, especially by glass. Better than average restaurant. Not foodie level but you'll have a good meal."

  • "Top of the Market is a great place to take those special out-of-town guests (the nice family members) for a great seafood experience -- you know the kind they will never get in the Midwest. Great ambiance and the view of San Diego harbor is very special. Dining next to the Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum also provides a unique experience that most visitors can't duplicate any where else. Great food and exceptional service."

  • "I would highly recommend this restaurant for sea food lovers. The service was impeccable and accommodating. It was my 60th birthday and I asked if i could have a candle in my dessert. The waiter not only had a candle put in the dessert with a little chocolate happy birthday sign in it as well and to top if off he said the dessert was on him. We do not live in San Diego. The trip was a birthday gift. My husband and I will certainly rave about this place and will return on subsequent trips. So far it has been a highlight of my trip. However, I will mention that it is in the expensive price range but in my opinion well worth it."

  • "Definitely San Diego's best. Swordfish was awesome! Highly reccommend."

  • "I had a reservation but either way I had to wait an extra 20 min to be seated by the time we ordered the food, one of the plates were no longer available. It was very disappointing since it was my mother's birthday and her food option wasn't available. In the other hand, the service and all the other dishes were excellent."

  • "Our waitress was very friendly and attentive - she did a great job - my mother in law had a birthday and she was very attentive to her however the food left much to be desired for. The starters were fine but the entree was pretty bad. We only had one entree only with several starters. The entree was a sea bass (not chilean) - over cooked rubbery, not flaky....anyway, basically killed the meal. We are New Yorker Manhattan foodies so our bars are pretty high but fish should be flavorful and flaky not chewy Great scenic views of the sunset on the water which was very beautiful"

  • "We had the opportunity to take "out of town" guests to the Top of the Market last Thursday night. My husband has been there several times and I had been there once before. We made a reservation for 6:00 pm. First of all, we were seated in one of those window tables where there is another diner on the other side of the glass. Somehow I find that seating very uncomfortable. On the other side of us was a large party of men who talked so loud that we could not even carry on a conversation. The noise level was beyong "energetic." Not even our server could hear us to take our order. On a bright note, our sever was excellent and the food was, pricey, but good. Not sure we will return."

  • "Top of the Market is one of my favorite places to take friends and guests from out of town. It epitomizes what San Diego has to offer - great food and service and an incomparable view of our beautiful bay and city."

  • "Good food. Nice view. Poor service!! Not sure if we will return. We ordered mussels & had to hunt down our server for extra plate for the shells. she was hardly ever available. Maybe we would have enjoyed our meal better had we had a better server!~!"

  • "Food did not live up to expectations. This restaurant is at the high end for my wife and I, should have been better."
    Dined on 2/15/2014
  • "Great choices of sea creatures for appetizers and entrees. Since we're both light eaters, we chose to start with salads. My partner ordered the swordfish, a favorite, and is still raving about it. My scallops were perfectly cooked, crispy on the outside, tender in the middle, maybe a little heavy on the black pepper. The dessert menu was boring so we didn't bother. Avoid Saturday nights, the parking situation can be horrific."
