  • "An old friend that resides in STL recommended Tony's to us, since we were out of towers visiting STL for a Nerium Convention at the Edward Jones Dome. We were greeted, cordially seated, introduced to the Staff serving us, and the evening dinner was delicious. The Staff were always attentive, yet we hardly knew they were around.   • "This wonderful dining experience was almost missed because of the discreet signage. The 2 doormen who welcomed us into the restaurant inside a modern building were the clue. There was a generous staffing ratio of knowledgeable and attentive men. The food was well executed with a series of delicious and well matched classic Italian wines. For our special occasion this 5 course luxurious meal was perfect. Other diners were enjoying smaller meals, A la Carte choices or specially decanted wines."

  • "We visited Tony's for a celebration of my friend's birthday who was having a hard time with this particular number of birthdays. I mentioned that in my reservation and asked if people could make her feel special. Everybody who came by wished her a happy birthday and they even gave her a small taste of a cake with candle. The whole evening made this particularly hard birthday a wonderful treat. Thank you for being so attentive."

  • "I chose Tony's because it was highly rated by Trip Adviser and was close to our hotel. The evening started well but soon turned into a nightmare as the wine list was not updated and each time we ordered one, it took about 20 minutes for the waiter to tell us the bottle is sold out or brought the wrong vintage from that on the wine list. By the time we got our first sip, we had sat for over an hour eating bread. Our waiter also looked overwhelmed. The food was good but the service was unacceptable at this level of restaurant. There are many alternatives in the area and so we will not be going back here on our next visit to St. Louis. It's too bad as I'm told it used to be one of the finest in St. Louis."

  • "Sheesh, there is no debate here. The only decision is , how many times can we go before the truly magnificent ,becomes less. I went on sat night 6:30 in March . The waiter noticed I had trouble reding menu and gave some readers. One of the amazing things about Tonys is that the waiters attend the tables need without you noticing them.the waiters are knowledgable about the food and seem to know when to be there and when you let you enjoy your conversation. I could go into several areas where they excel, wine,and decor, but you should go and see for yourself ."

And their salads; Tony's on menu forever, and many other special salads always are available. Great starters, great wines, great deserts and outstanding service.   • "We have visited Tony's twice recently for special occasions. Still one of the top restaurants in the Midwest with great service, a friendly ambiance and stellar food. The menu offers lots of Northern Italian choices and heavy on steaks and veal. They finish up items table-side and the servers are generally very friendly and informed. It's hard to imagine a better service experience in any city. While expensive, it's much more reasonable that similar restaurants in other cities. The newly updated space makes the bar more friendly and modern (Jan 2014 remodel). Good for couples or groups of 6-8. Always dependable. Used to be jacket required, but now a bit more causal. Always worth a trip to Tony's if you have never been. Legendary in STL"

Don't be fooled into thinking that Tony's is just for a special occasion or that it's stodgy or old-fashioned. The food is adventurous and delicious (a smoked scallop risotto was a particular standout), and if you choose your wine wisely, you won't walk out feeling too light in the wallet.   • "While the food was excellent, the service was poor. We had an early reservation but were seated at the back of the restaurant, near where the waitstaff congregate. The guests who were seated around us were those who were not 'in proper attire' for Saturday evening. As soon as we mentioned that we were attending the theatre, our waiter disengaged. The other staff were more efficient and attentive. I would have preferred to tip them!"

  • "Was highly recommended by long time local executive/friend. Was worried that it would be stuffy, staff was welcoming, attentive, knowledgable. Diners were great mix of business, special occasion, casual diners. Server was very knowledgable regarding both menu and the wine list. Steaks were outstanding quality wise, be careful to make sure the level of done ness is clearly communicated(mine was over cooked). Wish we would have ordered more of the pasta items as they looked interesting on the menu and great on tables near us."

  • "Luckily we had a gift certificate and didn't have to pay for all of this out of our own pocket. We don't drink, so when I turned down looking at the wine list I felt like I was treated like a second rate citizen. We were not offered anything to drink besides water or cocktails. Do you have tea or Sprite? I started with the Tony's salad. Either the meat had gone bad or it was made with venison. It had a vey gamey taste and I could not finish it because of the after taste. My steak was the best part of the meal although slightly overcooked. Dessert was a coconut pastry and the crust was as hard as rock. Another annoyance was the smell of sterno throughout the restaurant. It got in my clothes and I smelled it the rest of the night."

  • "We had a reservation at 7:30 and arrived 10 min early. We were told to wait in the living room. We waited 45 min and at least 10 couples get seated without a reservation. At 8:15 I spoke to the person at the front desk and was told that there were 7 people in front of us. We left and will never return. I know that Tonys has to take care of its regulars, but this was a big deal to us . If you are going to accept reservations you should honor them."

  • "A STL classic, but this time the food was so salty we all wanted to send it back. Portions were inappropriately small even for a nationally famous restaurant. Still my daughter felt special as it was her first time there and we were celebrating her acceptance to dental school. Vince the owner offered to take us back to the kitchen after dinner but he must have forgot as we were on our way out and he looked like he had never met us. Very fake and very disappointing. It may be a long while before I go back there. Unfortunate. Classic case of resting on your laurels... At $120 per person I can think of 20 other places I'd rather go in STL right now than there."

  • "Does dining at Tony's once every 10 years make you a regular, and qualify you to be critical of an icon? If so, not only Tony's dress code (coat and tie no longer required on Saturdays) has slipped just a bit. Perhaps wife's and my experience is attributable to aging taste buds, but my truffled scallops antipasto lacked the truffle edge I recall having made that dish my all-time favorite. And the signature-dish, Lobster Albanello, seemed to be a tad overwhelmed by its heavy mushroom cream sauce. Nevertheless, Tony's still clears the 5-star bar easily. OBTW, for those who have been critical of the service: get there early. At 6:30 on a Saturday our service was great. And our visit from owner Vince Bommarito was the highlight of our night."

Everyone from the valets out front to the wait staff to the owner were courteous and extremely helpful. We enjoyed this restaurant very much and will be back soon."

The food and the wait staff lived up to every bit of praise we've heard throughout the years, and it's not hard to see why this restaurant has survived for as long as it has. If I had judged it by the decor, I would have left up entering, but I'm glad I didn't. These people know how to do it right, and it is especially nice to be greeted by the owner."

  • "Food was tasty, well presented, hot. Found the decor to look like a converted meeting room. A large square room, gray drop ceiling, worn and torn carpet, no notable paintings, murals or other to give the room a defined feeling. For the cost, I would expect a higher quality stemware. Service was efficient and timely, as requested. But I thought a bit too relaxed and needed a little polishing. I'm a bit old fashioned by little things like using words such as 'yeah" and 'uh-huh' seemed unprofessional for this level of dining. Guest name was used on seating with introductions but never again during the experience. Body language on some was too relaxed and casual."

  • "Our annual holiday tradition turned into a very disappointing evening. First we were greeted an unfriendly wait staff, were never asked if we wanted additional wine or drinks during dinner. After dinner our empty glasses and plates were left on the table, our water glasses were not filled when they went empty. When salads were served, 4 of the 5 in our party received their salads and mine sat on the cart as our server went to wait on another table. He finally noticed it as he went back to the kitchen with no apology or explanation. What was once a wonderful experience has become average casual dining in both service and dress code (jeans are now acceptable?). This was not the Tony's experience that we had found in our previous visits."

  • "There was confusion as to whom I was. Several times I was asked who I was. The host was very sloppy and didn't seem to want to be courteous and seat me. He was also very snobbish. The waiter was very brisk and seemed to be rushed and not want be bothered. An item was on the menu that I wanted and was told when ordering it that it was not available. If it was on the menu it should have been available. Service was very slow. It was forty-five minutes after ordering before the food arrived. There seemed to be confusion and a rushed and slow service. Three times they gave me the wrong coat check. All of this took place when reservations were made two weeks in advance."
