Went on a Thursday night before a concert. 6:30 was very busy and worried that my reservation would not be honored, but it was. Very high noise level. OK ambiance. Minimal menu was good but not exciting. It has a high convenience factor and moderate cost.

This is a hot spot even mid-week; reservations are a good idea. The menu is both eclectic and interesting, combining lots of basic American comfort foods, pizza, burgers, fried chicken, etc., with an interesting twist on many. The food is well executed and service is fast. It is loud and busy, so not a place to linger or hold a serious conversation, but a decent meal at reasonable prices.

Tonic is the place to go at GW for breakfast or lunch/brunch. This time, though, even though we had a reservation, we had to wait for 10 minutes to be seated. The food is fine, service is efficient. The various forms of the tater tots is wonderful! Be prepared to shout to your companions, though, as the noise level is high. Not fine dining, but good comfort food and lots of options for vegetarians.

Enjoyed a meal here before La Boheme at Kennedy Center. Service was prompt and courteous, meal was just what we wanted ... not heavy and adequate portions ... and that was for the BBQ pork! Really happy that they carry Bell's Two hearted Ale. Side of tater tots (you MUST try those at least once) was perfect to top the meal off.

Dined at Tonic with a friend prior to seeing a show at the Kennedy Center. Our server was Juan...very nice guy and promptly delivered our drinks. Menu has a lot of really cool "kicked up" comfort food. Some great choices. I tried the pulled pork entree with collard greens and mac and cheese. My friend selected the salmon cakes. We were both really pleased with our choices. Wish that we had been asked for another drink during our meal...but that was ok. Dessert was disappointing...an apple cobbler with ice cream. Ice cream delish! Cobbler....meh....not much flavor. We also ordered some nice manhattans as an after dinner drink. Tasty. Will definitely return here!

Just came across this place while wandering around town; definitely a college spot since it's right near GWU. Seemed like the place the kids bring their parents when they come visit. Service was fantastic, didn't have to wait long for food/drinks at all and server was super friendly. Tator tot poutine appetizer was disappointing (not quite hot, pretty salty), but steak wedgie salad was delish! Great flavors, well prepared steak, great portion for the price. Hubby had the Buffalo chicken sandwich, said it tasted great, but the chicken was a little dried out.

Tonic is a solid American restaurant. Known for their tater tots, the restaurant does the basics (fried chicken, pulled pork) very well. Nothing fancy or trendy here -- good American comfort food in an energetic restaurant in a great location. Very good beer selection. Service was very, very good. Overall, a very safe bet.

With two daughters visiting town, I wanted somewhere fun to have lunch with them before a show at the Kennedy Center. We had a hard time choosing between brunch and lunch, and two of us decided on lunch. The food was great, and the service was excellent. Our server was helpful in recommending meals based on our preferences, and with bottomless mimosas, we had a terrific time.

Tonic has a pretty basic menu but they always seem to turn out food that disappoints. On my most recent visit the "ciabatta" bread used on my sandwich tasted like packing material and the ham seemed straight from a package of supermarket cold cuts. If you go, go for the college bar scene and, perhaps, the tater tots and keep you expectations regarding the food low.

Had a really nice dinner Friday night at Tonic. Nostalgia galore since I rembered my days at GW circa 69-7r when Quigley's would cash a $2 check for students. Now it is a delight. Fantastic value for very good, upstairs is quieter but convivial. Recommend the steak, the salmon and the G St salad

Have been going to Tonic for a few years but this was the most disappointing visit. The service was great (it was very quiet on a Monday), there was not the hustle and bustle, but the food was lackluster. My burger was underdone (and actually raw at the final bite - it was meant to be medium - that I had stomach ache two hours later and into the night is probably just a coincidence). The tater tots were overwhelming ... too many on a plate. And the apple pie was sweeter than should be legal ... apples felt like they came out of a jar ... all in all, might not be visiting for a while, which is a shame because every neighborhood needs a good place for a decent burger and this used to be it ...

Tonic looks like a lot like it would be a hangout for GWU students, but the food is surprisingly good. My salad was excellent and my wife loved the grilled salmon. Tonic has two outdoor patios, one right on 21st St and the other in the back of the restaurant. It is one block from Lisner and a great place to eat before a concert.

My friends and I decided to try Tonic for brunch since it was close to the Kennedy Center, it was one of the less expensive brunch choices in the area and the menu looked great! I'm glad we went, our experience was fantastic! The service was very friendly and they have it all together. We had a new server who had only been working for 4 days who was very knowledgable and if he was unsure of something, he would very promptly find the right answer. It was nice that the server did not come to the table every 5 minutes to check on us, we were able to have as much time as we needed to catch up and have a relaxing brunch. They also have really great outside seating options. I will definitely be returning in the future!

Picked this place purely due to its close proximity to our hotel. Great find. It was a good find. With outdoor areas and a lower level bar, but we were seeking refuge from the humidity of mid Autumn and got a table upstairs in air-conditioned comfort. Fried chicken wings w/ blue cheese dip and ranch sauce; pulled pork mac'n'cheese; pulled pork platter (with mac'n'cheese and cold potato salad). Plus a mocktails each. We had leftovers to take home! Hahaha. Presumably gets more lively once semester restarts!!

The food was good: nothing to write home about, but decent and yummy. My gripe with this restaurant was our server, who was dressed in a slovenly manner and had extremely poor people skills. She was a little odd -- her affect and delivery, both in speech and serving our food, was off and unpleasant. As my dining partner said, "She has strange energy." She really shouldn't be a server in a restaurant of this caliber, especially given the charming hostesses who start the evening off well for customers.

Our waiter was friendly and attentive enough-- we asked to be seated on the outside porch but we were on such an angle that the condensation from our drinks kept dripping through the slots in the table onto our legs. It was a pleasant enough night for that kind of trade off. My drink came out only after we asked about it again and it had clearly been poured and forgotten due to the ice being so melted. Tator tots came out and they were luke warm at best. By then we were too hungry to complain. Just a " meh" experience. Not sure we'd bother to go back.

A justifiably popular spot for lunch, drinks and dinner. The staff are friendly and make good recommendations. My only complaint is the less than efficient "system" for seating clients. I showed up on time for my lunch reservation but still had to wait in a line that stretched out the front door for about 10 minutes before I could reach the host/hostess station, where the management seemed to be struggling to juggle all the customers, most of whom also seemed to have reservations. I recommend showing up early for your reservation, especially if you're on a tight schedule. The food is simple, wholesome and good value for money.

We have been to Tonic seversl times since we work at the Department of the Interior. I booked a table for eight and we were seated on the top floor where it is not as loud. The service was so slow we waited for 15 to 20 minutes with dry glasses. Our waiter passed by several times without making eye contact. Tonic has better lunch time wait staff. The food is typical bar fare..burgers and such. They really think their tater tots are special for some reason. Both were served cold unfortunately. My plate had all the residue from the deep fry basket dumped on it and the memphis burger I ordered had a deep fried foreign object on it that made me nauseous when it bit into it. We wont be going to tonic again. Come on guys!

We ordered the basket of tater tots for a starter and they came with 3 dipping sauces, which were all delicious. The basket is a very generous portion and the tots were cooked to the perfect level of crispiness. However, our second course of salads was unbelievably disappointing. And we chose salads that were recommended by our server! One salad had been added back to the menu recently because it was so popular in the past (I can't fathom why after tasting it). The lettuce was nice and crisp, but the toppings were scarce and bland. What made up for all of it was the wonderful outdoor dining space next to a very light traffic road in DC.

We had dinner before attending the Washington Kastles match. We ate in the second floor dining room. The place is like many others in town, exposed brickwork and beams with some modern touches in the design and a menu that is becoming standard fare in middle-of-the-road restaurants in DC. But that is a good thing, as the quality of the food and the selection of drinks shows just how high standards have been raised in DC. Tonic is not a place for special dinner, but we had a very good meal with excellent service, and that's plenty good enough.

Four of us spent a delightful Sunday afternoon and evening in the Lounge viewing the final game of World Cup and then had dinner in the second floor dining room. Overall it was fantastic. We sat right at the bar where the waitstaff was attentive and prompt with service. I was especially impressed that the redhead bartender remembered what I was drinking when it came time to reorder. In the dining room the ambience was enjoyable and the food delicious. Our waitress was polite and helpful, but her only function was to be to take our order. She came by very shortly after the food arrived to ask if everything was satisfactory. That was the last we saw of her. She never came back to see if we needed more iced tea or water.

Made reservations for the World Cup Final. The restaurant had a note that it would make efforts to meet requests with views of TV, but cannot guarantee. Understandable - but makes it seem like that it is possible. When we checked in, the hostesses said the only spots to watch the game were in the bar, outdoor garden & thee space upstairs, which were all first-come-first-serve. So basically the reservation meant nothing and their note for viewing the game was misleading. Food was okay; not bad, but nothing spectacular. One great thing was the male bartender who worked that day in the garden bar: quick to see an empty glass and offer a refill simply by making eye contact & nodding to us. Great service, please recognize him for that.
