Diner Reviews
  • "We ordered the basket of tater tots for a starter and they came with 3 dipping sauces, which were all delicious. The basket is a very generous portion and the tots were cooked to the perfect level of crispiness. However, our second course of salads was unbelievably disappointing. And we chose salads that were recommended by our server! One salad had been added back to the menu recently because it was so popular in the past (I can't fathom why after tasting it). The lettuce was nice and crisp, but the toppings were scarce and bland. What made up for all of it was the wonderful outdoor dining space next to a very light traffic road in DC."

  • "Wait staff has to handle too many table leading to long waits. Food was cold on arrival at the table. Won't be in a hurry to go back."

  • "Four of us spent a delightful Sunday afternoon and evening in the Lounge viewing the final game of World Cup and then had dinner in the second floor dining room. Overall it was fantastic. We sat right at the bar where the waitstaff was attentive and prompt with service. I was especially impressed that the redhead bartender remembered what I was drinking when it came time to reorder. In the dining room the ambience was enjoyable and the food delicious. Our waitress was polite and helpful, but her only function was to be to take our order. She came by very shortly after the food arrived to ask if everything was satisfactory. That was the last we saw of her. She never came back to see if we needed more iced tea or water."

  • "Made reservations for the World Cup Final. The restaurant had a note that it would make efforts to meet requests with views of TV, but cannot guarantee. Understandable - but makes it seem like that it is possible. When we checked in, the hostesses said the only spots to watch the game were in the bar, outdoor garden & thee space upstairs, which were all first-come-first-serve. So basically the reservation meant nothing and their note for viewing the game was misleading. Food was okay; not bad, but nothing spectacular. One great thing was the male bartender who worked that day in the garden bar: quick to see an empty glass and offer a refill simply by making eye contact & nodding to us. Great service, please recognize him for that."

  • "I love this place! Great staff! Great Food! Awesome location! If you want to experince the DC dinning without breaking the bank this is the place."

  • "The staff pushed two booths together and it made it challenging to get 12 people into the booths."

  • "We went on the 4th of July. It was super busy and it took over an hour to get our food. The taters tots (which they are famous for) were very good everything else was average."

  • "You have to start with the tator tot basket! It's enough to feed a family of 4! Then, we had the Hamilton & Bernie pizzas - both were delicious. Had enough left overs for the next day's lunch (and then some). Awesome place, love visiting when we're in town."

  • "I would not recommend the food but the overall experience was pleasant."

  • "We ate here before a 7:30pm show at the Kennedy Center. Only about a 10 minute walk from the restaurant to the Kennedy Center, so it was a very convenient place to eat. The ambiance of the restaurant is nice, and the wait staff and hosts were friendly. The cocktail I ordered was "meh", I wish I had just ordered a beer or glass of wine. The food was good, but it came out seriously like 5 minutes after we ordered it. That makes me think everything is pre-made and they just plate as they get orders? It was strange. But, like I said, the food did taste good and was hot. Not sure I would go to Tonic again, but our experience was not bad."

  • "Great place to have lunch during the work week and I would imagine the tots would be even better late night."

  • "Tonic is a decent place to dine. I have had great experiences and I have had bad experiences there. Unfortunately, this last time dining at Tonic was a bad experience. We went for lunch and were given in a seat in the outside garden, which is great! The server was really nice, but it took just over 50 minutes to get our food. Once our food came out they messed up the order so instead of leaving the food they did get right they took it all away. 20 minutes later we finally got our food. Since the food took so long to come out we had to get the check right away and box up our food and take it with us. I love Tonic's happy hour so I will most likely go back for that, but dining there will not be an option for me anymore."

  • "Got there at 1:30 for lunch and they were out of the daily special. A very pricy (All most $100 for 2 salads and 2 salmon burgers) afternoon.."

  • "We chose the restaurant for an early dinner before a show at the Kennedy Center. The tater tots were very good, but the pot pot pie was under seasoned (a few herbs and spices are in order). My husband's steak was obviously a cheaper cut of meat as it was tough, even though it was medium rare. The brownie dessert was the highlight of the meal--delicious. The waitstaff was excellent. Might eat there again and order different items"

  • "The back patio is nice and new, but desperately needs shade for all the tables, as summers in DC can get quite hot."

  • "You do need reservations, but it is worth thinking ahead for this spot. The food is great! Servings plentiful and the service has always been good."

  • "A friend and I went here prior to a ballet at the Kennedy Center. It's a short walk from Foggy Bottom Metro and we were able to get in and out in time for the ballet. "

  • "This was my 2nd visit within a month to Tonic. My first visit was very favorable - I actually booked dinner before a performance at nearby Lisner Auditorium and then returned for after dinner drinks. I had enjoyed the menu offerings then, so on this visit I wanted to meet colleagues working nearby and try more of the lunchtime menu. I chose the salmon burger but to my surprise found it to be the most tasteless, dull, dry specimen I have ever had, leagues less digestible than I find at a local greasy spoon across town. I had to say NO this time on the question of recommending Tonic to a friend based on this indigestible salmon burger - it was simply the very worst salmon burger I have ever had."

  • "Loved the food at Tonic. Atmosphere was definitely college student chic but my mom and I had a table upstairs near the front window and it was just fine. The food was excellent and we both enjoyed what we had. Service was a little slow but it was really busy so understandable."

  • "The food here is good. If you are looking for something healthy to eat, the menu is pretty limited. Laid back atmosphere. Very good service!"

  • "Tonic's famous "tots" as well as totchos (nachos using tater tots), and wings are huge portions during Happy Hour. Happy Hour prices for wine and beer. Nice outdoor seating with awning that came in handy when it started raining."

  • "I have always liked Tonic at Quigley's at Foggy Bottom. Now i have a new reason: the outside bar area where Austin provided the beer, food and great tunes for an excellent outdoor Friday lunchtime dining experience. "

  • "Tonic is just a block from GWU's Lisner Auditorium, ideal for catching a meal before a show and the service didn't disappoint. Our waiter and the kitchen staff ably provided us our meal in a flash and it was a savory salmon with garlic spinach and homestyle mash potatoes that I'd go back for. While the clientele skew towards the university set, with their high volume outside voices easily bombarding adjacent tables, the structure's sturdy enough to absorb & disappoint some of the bombast so that you can have a reasonable conversation with your companions. All in all, for a first visit, Tonic didn't disappoint and we actually returned after the performance for a late night drink and snack."

  • "We sat outside and had a lovely waiter. My friend order the tater tots covered with hollandaise sauce, which were delicious. I got the Santa Fe scramble egg dish, which was fantastic especially since I added a side of guacamole. "

  • "I liked this place, I'm not from DC but if I lived there this is definitely the type of place I'd go to. Some nice outdoor seating areas, solid menu of comfort food with a twist, great beer list (a little overpriced when not happy hour, but still), and easily accommodated our baby. "

  • "We were in DC for a Garden Walk and selected Tonic due to its proximity to the WH and brunch offerings. The food was very good but the service was a bit slow. They are fully justified in touting their tots - yum! "

  • "The restaurant was different but in a quaint location. We didn't know that they were known for their Tater Tots but I have to admit, they were good!"

  • "Tonic is on the GWU campus, but that only means it's great for parents to take their students. But the majority of people when we were there seemed neither college student nor parents. hopping. GREAT beer list, awesome burgers. The fish tacos were particularly popular with our group. It was just enough noise to feel "hopping" but we had no trouble hearing each other. Would go back in a heartbeat, and probably will!"

  • "I needed a place to meet a friend for dinner near the venue at George Washington University where a noted scientist and author was givine a lecture later in the evening. Tonic was just the right spot in terms of ease of parking, closeness to the lecture, and efficiency of getting us in and out so we wouldn't be late. The food was great, the service even better. I definitely will be making Tonic my "go-to" restaurant in the GWU area."

  • "We enjoyed a great brunch outdoors on a beautiful spring day! Our entrees included the Hippo, blueberry pancakes, yougart parfait & granola, pulled pork sandwich and the breakfast burrito. Portions were a good size without being too much (although we still had a few leftovers). Prices were reasonable and service was good. We also enjoyed the bacon blood mary and we're already planning a return visit for the bottomless mimosas! Overall, a good choice for a casual, laid back Sunday brunch."

  • "I've had a decent/average experience at Tonic in the past but this experience has me never want to go back. Highlights: - Being told I cand't add spinach to my eggs since "all the food is pre-made". The waitperson went to the back and apparently "fought" for me to add spinach to my eggs at a cost of two dollars (for a few measly leaves)...no thanks - It took us 45 mins for 2 brunch plates which were apparently "pre-made". When our food came out, it was lukewarm and the cheese on top of my eggs had already reached that nasty half-melted state where it looks plasticy - After 45 mins, my friend's order was COMPLETELY wrong. It took another 20 to get her food and mine became freezing. No offers to reheat and we couldn't find our wait staff."
