Truly a great "Tikki Lounge/Polynesian" experience...enjoyed the floating boat with a live band on board...Fun evening, great tropical drinks- not watered down! Great experience for all ages...Service was wonderful, attentive service from our server, Bash.

the restaurant was nice the food was great the staff wonderful BUT... the live band was unbelievably loud. way to loud to enjoy a meal to. we could not speak to each other at all. i would never go again during live music and we had to pay $42 extra on our bill because the band was playing... i would have paid more to have them STOP playing.

The food is a bit pricey for what it is, but the atmosphere makes it all worth it. My favorite things were the lagoon and the interior decoration. The food portions are on the nouvelle cuisine level, but the drinks are robust.

The Tonga Room is a great restaurant for a fun dining experience. Between the ambiance and the live band, it's really hard NOT to have a great dining experience! The food is good, albeit a tad pricy given the quality. Portion size is good. Overall, we enjoyed the food but considered is good vs great. However, it was really the ambiance, decor, and live music that did it for us. The band is great and plays lots of great "happy" and "fun" music. The music selection was surprisingly diverse, but every song was recognizable. The Tonga Room would be a great place to get a cocktail and enjoy "feel good" music and maybe dance a little. Highly recommended!

I have previously been to Tonga Room one time and only had a cocktail there, but due to the fact that my boyfriend had not and he loves all things tropical and Hawaiian, I thought this would be a great place to take him for a birthday dinner. Even though we had to call and ask to push our reservation back 45 minutes, the hostess pleasantly addressed me by my last name and accommodated my request left in open table to sit next to the lagoon. Our server, Bash, was wonderful! He was extremely kind and his timing with bringing out all of our food and beverages was spot on. He also brought my boyfriend a birthday dessert and sang "Happy Birthday" to him. Finally, the food was delicious (pork buns, mahi mahi, calamari) and so were the drinks!

I say experience, as this restaurant is really for the "Tonga Experience". The drinks are strong, so make sure you take a cab and enjoy yourselves! I came with a group of four and we had the Lava Bowl, Scorpion Bowl, and some other individual drinks as well. The food was decent .. the band livens the place up along with the dance floor which we also took advantage of .. but really it's all about the atmosphere with the pool, tiki-huts, as well as a tableside "tropical storm" with rain, thunder and lightening .. definitely fun for groups! Had a great time .. deff recommend going here at least once!

So I really have nothing to complain about. I mean, the food was amazing, the ambiance was sort of similar to my expectations, and the service did it's job in bringing food and check to our table. Usually, though, if I am to play up the wahoo for dining experiences, I don't anticipate thing being done....and nothing more. I anticipate amazing service and a feeling that your experience and time at that restaurant matters to the employees. I got none of that....really. I had more fun with other paying customers than I did with those who work there.

Food was very good. Drinks were wonderful. Environment and decor is reminiscent of the Polynesian flare of the 1970s. Great fun. Excellent food, not Michelin 5 star, but absolutely there were no disappointments in anyone's meals (7 of us in the party). Its different and fun. If you happen to like Travis McGee and Jimmy Buffett - all the better ! Drinks are strong and fun as well. There was a line to get in and we were glad for reservations!

The mood, decor, and theme of the restaurant is interesting and overall fun. The drinks were also fun and strong but a bit over priced. The food and service were the worst part. The service was extremely slow and the food was way over priced. It even beats prices of 5 star restaurants in the city. Because of this I will not be going back.

We booked at the tonga room having had a recomendation from a friend, who'd visited years ago when he was just 8!! It exceeded all expectations - my friend had tried to explain the setting and the amazing 'rain' in the restaurant but nothing could've prepared me for how brilliant the atmosphere would be! The music was fantastic, staff lovely, and the food suited the theme perfectly. We had the set menu and loved every bit. The mahi mahi fish in particular was absolutely delicious. If you're in San Fran for a few nights or more, it is WELL worth a visit for a really, really fun night. Make sure you go when the band are playing though!

This total tiki-geek wanted to love it, but aside from the decor, the floating band, and the occasional cloudburst, the Tonga Room is mostly unremarkable. The long-dank fluorescent hallway approach to the restaurant is just plain weird. Yes, there is the lone Tiki assure one they are on the right floor, but that feeling goes away while having to walk past corporate offices, empty ballrooms and utility closets. The room itself is AMAZING, but that's where it all ends. Food is "Meh," and the lava and scorpion bowls are impossible to distinguish by taste. Service was attentive, but somehow not-quite-right. The long straws and watching the ballroom dancers were fun. Paying for it all was not. It would have been expensive at half the price.

I have been coming to the Tonga for over 30 years and this last experience was the best ever. This was in large part due to the outstanding management of Michael Zamarripa and superb service by KC. We were a party of 8 to celebrate a birthday and though the dining room was to capacity, they made us feel very special. The room is great fun and you can tell that everyone is having a good time. This is in large part also due to an excellent band that plays everything from standards to great oldies from the 60s 70s and 80s. A great choice for people in the mood for a evening of great fun!

Well, you don't go to Tonga Room & Hurricane Bar for fine dining--even though they charge fine dining prices. Roy's Polynesian this isn't, but the over-the-top original tropical tiki scene, complete with hotel pool repurposed as floating Asian lounge act lake and overhead "rain storms" is the real reason you go. The drinks are strong (Mai Tais, Pina Coladas and the like) and the Hawaiian-style pork delicious, but the prices and the rest? So-so. You'd swear the band on the floating Polynesian barge was taken direct from a Hanoi Holiday Inn. If you love tiki, rum and kitsch you'll have a great time. Just don't come expecting great food.

Started off very good but the main course came while we were still eating our first course! Ask them to take it away, which they did, and cooked a fresh main course again. This was came out about 25-30 minutes, after the first course - much better! Tonga room needs to watch the timings of courses, need to give diners at a 15-20 minutes break between courses. Everything else was lovely!

Love the ambiance, decor, drinks and service at The Tonga Room. The only drawback is that the food is very expensive for what you get. I had the butterfish, which was served in a bowl of broth and vegetables like a soup. Not bad, but for $28 I expected something more substantial.

This is a fun place to go when you feel like enjoying a rum based drink and some decent food. Don't expect fine dining in a refined atmosphere. The band was nice, the decor was very fun and the drinks were nice. Overall, a very good experience. The only downside was trying to communicate with the waiter. His grasp of English was tenuous, and the loud music added a further barrier. However, he was friendly and prompt with service.

The place is really energetic and fun with the live band and the rain falling every 20 minutes, plus the decor really transports you to the Hawaiian islands. However, the food was not of the best quality, and over priced to make matters worse. Everything we had was bland and poorly executed. The drinks, however, were good. I would recommend this place for someone looking for a fun night out, but just go to the bar, don't have dinner.

We go to the Tonga Room often, we always like it. The food is good but not above that. However, the ambiance makes this restaurant - bar a special place. The music was good, but we are used to hear better bands. Perhaps middling a female vocalist was the problem. Over all, we recommend the Tonga, we will be back.

Have been to the Tonga before for cocktails, but this time around we took the kids and a friend for early dinner, party of six. Attentive staff, prompt service, good food, but the bill was wrong to the tune of $200! No doubt a one-time random mistake, and the gaffe was easily corrected with the hotel at checkout the next day, but still a bit odd, since the place is pretty accustomed to crowds of tourists and hipsters, and it was an early seating before the evening crowds. Still, I'd come again for the fun of the place, and another go at the Tonga seafood hot pot!

The food was amazing (when I think of it, my mouth waters) and the drinks excellent - there was a group of us and I loved how each drink came in it's own unique glass and tasted to match. The manager came by to check on our table and when he learned we were there for a bachelorette party, the bride to be was treated to a little dessert. The live music was catchy and fun and made for an all around wonderful evening.
