Diner Reviews
  • "I have always wanted to come here and experience the rain! It was grest! We had a lovely dinner at a table overlooking the pool. The food, service and atmosphere could not have been better. Wonderful relaxed pace of our meal as well. It was everything I hoped it would be!"

  • "The Tonga Room is the place to be in Nob Hill-- maybe even San Francisco! We went down on Friday night to just check it out, and ended up sitting in the bar immediately because miraculously there was a table! We grabbed a drink, and made dinner reservations for Sunday. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was spirited. It was a fun place to hang out and enjoy dinner and cocktails. The band playing the oldies and Motown hits was the icing on the cake!"

  • "You get really good food but the prices are up higher but it's SF. Music is worth the 7 dollar door charge a person (only Friday & Saturdays) was a highlight of our trip"

  • "It's an exciting feeling to go to a restaurant so highly rated by Anthony Bourdain (don't trust him anymore) for the umbrella drinks. Firstly, the drinks are really just okay tasting: Mai Tai's at the Fairmont in Maui are MUCH better than here. The descriptions of the drinks don't match what they taste like either. Food is just plain ol expensive and don't taste as good as any mall type Asian food does. Very disappointing, Anthony Bourdain."

  • "We had a great time, and the waiter was very helpful selecting our meal and how much to order. They even made a special food creation for us. Loved the Rainforest feel of the place!"

  • "The negative is cost, so will say that up front. But we went in expecting that. Couple with two possibly picky teens. We did the Ohana Family style meal which was a good choice as we got to try various things. We all liked the food and thought it was quite good. The service with our waiter Ken was fabulous! Over the top excellent service from him and others. The entertainment you pay extra for (band) on boat on water. Music was too loud but fun and good music. We all really enjoyed our meal and time there so that made the $$$$ worthwhile. Glad we went."

  • "We chose to celebrate a friend's birthday at the Tonga Room. It had been 20 years since we were there. It is the same decor, but it doesn't feel old. We very much enjoyed the Ohana dinner for 4. We also enjoyed the musician trio. The Tonga Room is a must do."

  • "We love to visit Tonga Room for its hospitality atmosphere, professional services, fine food, nice live band music, dancing floor and fantastic interior designs.... You just need to bring your lover with you."

  • "Between the old standbys dance band which arrives by boat and artificial rain, this place is a blast if you like to dance and don't mind the occasional clueless tourist!"
    Dined on 7/12/2014
  • "Loud and over priced, kitschy and not as fun as I thought!"

  • "We celebrated a 40th birthday here. Food was really good. There was a band in the middle of lagoon. Great night!"
    Dined on 7/11/2014
  • "The place was nice but the cost was too high. The variety of food was small and the proportions were very small. I will not go back."
    Dined on 7/11/2014
  • "Great place. Overall very expensive. Food is neat but like drinks is overpriced. Your paying for the atmosphere and service. Drinks are not as big as the may appear. Neat place to go for a drink or two."

  • "We went to the Tonga Room because it looked unique and fun. Surprisingly, the food was the best part. It was delicious! Try the tri-tip with greens in a cilantro sauce over mashed potatoes with a hint of coconut. Get a side of their grilled asparagus. The after dinner coffee with chocolate and coconut milk was also good. If I go back it will be for the terrific food. The service was excellent also."

  • "First let me say that before this last visit, I was at the Tonga Room in Sept 2012. Since that visit I was very surprised to find out that the overall quality of the restaurant has diminished greatly. Before the "Pineapple Royale" was served in an actual pineapple, now you are served your drink in a porcelain pineapple, no more real coconuts either, just porcelain ones. Granted the price of the drink has gone down, but I came here for the great atmosphere of two years ago, real pineapples and coconuts included! The menu has been cut down to basically one fish dish, one chicken dish, etc. Not to mention that there was one waiter for about 20 tables. This restaurant used to be worth the price, sadly not anymore."

  • "It was a good experience. The surroundings were great. Service was great. The food was fair. I had the Tonga hot pot. It was bland. It was not spicy as describe on the menu. The muhe e was okay. The red cabbage and papaya salad was good. My wife's Mahi Mahi was good. The prices are too high for the value of the food. You pay for the ambience."

  • "When I first came to SF decades ago a fellow new arrival talked me into going to the Tonga Room. Even then I thought it was cheesy, having previously lived in the Islands. Against my better judgment I was talked into returning. Big mistake. Cheesier than ever and the food was worse. I will leave it to the tourists who have never been to Hawaii, although I can't imagine that very many guests of the Fairmont have not."

  • "I have to admit, I love a good tiki bar and seek them out when I travel. I had seen this on the Layover and thought cool, I have to go here on my next trip. I would consider myself a foodie so you can imagine how disappointed I was when I saw the bad reviews on the food. I made dinner reservations anyway and told my husband about the reviews and that we would have some drinks and appetizers and see what we thought. The apps we so go (we had the special) we decided to stay for dinner. I have to say everything we had was great and I would go back. The ambiance is true tiki and is a must for any parrothead at heart."

  • "Was looking forward to eating here but ended up being very disappointed. The food was not that great, the service slow and the decor was very, very cheesy. If the prices were at least 50% less, then it might fit but for the amount we paid we expected a lot, lot more."

  • "Great theme & strong cocktails but food was tasteless & dry #needsauce"

  • "You couldn't have convinced me a place like this still existed if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes. An over-the-top, campy Tiki Lounge that actually serves decent food. Delicious shrimp dumplings, pork belly sliders and mushroom egg rolls. If you're into rum-based drinks served in a coconut with umbrellas, this is your spot. Wonderful service, and a sense of surrealism from your surroundings makes for a memorable experience."

  • "We had a wonderful Father's Day dinner at the Tonga Room. We got the Aina Ahiahi Ali’i for two, which is the more expensive of the family style dinners. Appetizers were tasty, although my husband didn't like that there was cilantro in the egg rolls. The chicken and shrimp entrees were fairly conventional, but delicious. The pork was a pulled pork - unusual and tasty. We love Brussels sprouts and they did not disappoint. The forbidden blend rice wasn't as flavorful as we had hoped. The pineapple rum cake was great - we ate it all even though we were stuffed. My husband wanted to try out all the tropical drinks, so I was the designated driver. But they made virgin drinks to match his, and they were fine. The service was exceptional."

  • "We went to the Tonga Room for Father's Day because the kids wanted to see the lagoon. I am a native San Franciscan and the Tonga Room is everything I remember it to be. Fun Tiki style room with over the top drinks. Horribly overpriced and embarrassingly bad food. Truly awful food. $12 shrimp dumplings that were mealy and mushy (as opposed to $1.80 awesome har gow on Clement street). Their Saimin really was spaghetti (don't call it Saimin if you don't use Saimin noodles). It's truly a shame because the most minimal effort could have yielded a far superior meal. Yet, you don't go to the Tonga Room for the food. The wait staff were wonderful, and the kitschy atmosphere was as awesome as ever. My tip - just go for the drinks."

  • "This is the third time we've been to the Tonga room since we moved to San Francisco, about 12 weeks ago. The first two times were great - outstanding food, service and entertainment. Unfortunately this time around, the service was really bad. It took about 45minutes for the waiter to get our bill. Throughout the evening, we had to hail him down for any service."

  • "We were disappointed with the food. Reading the menu makes the food very interesting but when it got served it was just basically chinese food that taste all the same. Nothing exciting. It looks like nothing was freshly cooked. From aapetizer to dessert we were not happy."

  • "I've been coming to this place for years now. It truly is an amazing place. Everything about it puts a smile on my face. The drinks are magical."

  • "Great fun for a group of you. Food very good - recommend the set menu's to make it easy if in a group. Each course of food delivered promptly without being rushed. Staff attentive without being obtrusive. Music from the 70's through 90's."

  • "My husband and I were very disappointed. We thought the food was mediocre at best and the atmosphere contrived and hooky. The false lightening was annoying and did not even sound like lightening. We will never go back as this is a tourist trap and way over-priced for the quality fo the food."

  • "Unique San Francisco experience especially for tourist. History of the Fairmont and Tonga Room depicted in pictures and displays around the hotel Great live band on Sunday night. Loved our waiter. Food was OK. Defitnately not a destination restaurant. Great atmosphere"

  • "We arrived a few minutes early so we had to wait until our table was ready but the hostess was gracious and kind and our wait was not long. Our waiter introduced himself and got our drink orders immediately. Our drinks arrived quickly but we were unsure about wanting to eat anything so our waiter said he would give us a few minutes. It seemed he was gone a little longer than a few minutes but since we were enjoying our drinks and the live band we didn't mind too much. We decided to just have dessert along with our drinks and at that point it seemed our waiter was more attentive. I cannot recommend any of the desserts we had. They were not very flavorful or they were unbalanced. But the live band was great and we still had a lot of fun."

  • "Everything about tonga was absolutely wonderful. The service was fast and friendly. We stayed for 2 hours talking and eating and never were we rushed to leave. Our drinks never dipped below half way and all of the food was absolutely to die for. The live band was great and the atmosphere was wonderful."

  • "The Tonga Room is a bit kitsch, the food decent, but not outstanding. But where else can you dine around a indoor swimming pool, rain, a floating band boat, tiki lights, and order $18 drinks that come in pineapples?"

  • "We made a reservation for 6/7/14 for us and our family and had a great time. Do make sure you leave early to find parking, otherwise they have a great Valet service at the Fairmont Hotel. The Hotel is stunning and historic which makes for a great walk or elevator ride to the Tonga room floor. The staff is very friendly, and the ambiance is fantastic. The drinks are good but we had their "Scorpion Bowl" that you share with 4 people. Don't have to many of those, they are strong! The menu does tell you, "BEWARE...One too many may sting! We ordered the "Ohana size" size plates for 5 people. One plate was the "Mango Glazed Mahi Mahi", very tasty but not enough for 5 people to share, just a heads up. We will be back again soon."

  • "Tonga room is definitely a unique spot. It's very expensive for the atmosphere. With the price I paid for my fiancé and my dinner we could have gone somewhere VERY nice. I feel like you're mostly paying for the atmosphere...but it's not good enough for the price we paid. Wouldn't say DON'T go, but I would say prepare to pay a LOT for an ok experience. The floating stage is pretty cool though!"

  • "Except for the ambience and drinks nothing is good... Tooo expensive for food, which is tasteless and bland for a Asian food "

  • "A kitschy throwback to the 40's and 50's tiki bar craze highlighted by Classic Asian-California cuisine. The band, the drinks, the rain that falls every 15 minutes are not to be missed. We both loved it!!"

  • "My boyfriend brought me here for a very romantic evening, and boy was it. We got engaged that night. The staff went out of their way to make sure our experience was nothing less than incredible. After dinner, they gave us a ring side table by the dance floor. The ambiance made this special evening more than memorable. I can't speak highly enough of our experience there. The food and drinks were great, but most of all it's the staff that made everything so magical. Hats off to the staff and a thousand thanks. We will be back !! I almost forgot to mention the decor. We felt as if we were on some tropical island, millions of miles from the city below. Incredible !!!"
