i've been going to the tonga room ever since i was a small child. the food is good and the wait staff caters to the kids, offering crackers for my 21 month old and bringing milk on-demand was very nice (waiter's name was Bash). the music entertainment starts at 8 and is fun for the kids, especially ones that like to dance. i was a little disappointed in the table we received (far end of restaurant), the kids could not see the band very well as their backs were to us. When I asked if we could be moved their wasn't much flexibility with the head staff. I would suggest asking for a table on the sides that has a good view of the band BUT ask when you make your reservations, don't wait until you get there.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2008VIP
    Dined on 10/10/2008
We mistakenly thought that this was the main dining room at the Fairmont Hotel and that it would be similar to other diningrooms. In fact it is a "theme" room with water in the center and a band playing on a floating stage ( kind of like elevator music) The food is okay but nothing special. Our bar bill for three drinks and a bottle of wine exceeded the cost of the food as we uncharacteristiclly had the themed "umbrella" drinks just for a lark. We didn't have a bad experience just not one we would ever knowlingly choose. It would be fun for children or people who haven't travelled much and who might find the novelty interesting.

Always FUN! We took our children 10 to 14 and they all loved it. A must do if on Nob Hill. Music at 8pm, we miss the previous band that played there for years but, still all in all we had a good time.

A restaurant with special effects! We were in the mood for a fun old-fashioned Polynesian-themed place. Cocktails with umbrellas, live music but not too loud, a good appetizer dish. My entree was quite good, the meat not overcooked. It was a little pricey but nothing to complain about. The service was prompt and friendly.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2005

I originally went to the Tonga Room because of the atmosphere, theme, and ambiance. I had no expectations of the food when I was overwhelmed by the taste and tenderness of both the pork and beef dishes (forgot the names, sorry). The shrimp appetizer was crispy and delicious also. Service was very good and our waiter was excellent. Unfortunately, the theme drinks did not taste right at all. Stick with something that doesn't need to be mixed. Overall, our experience was enjoyable. Attire was casual so there was no pressure to dress up and accordingly our dinner was very relaxing.

My second time here with the family and the band is great! We came for drinks, finger foods, and dancing and had a blast. Band is very lively and gets everyone up-not boring at all which is why we come back. Food is a bit pricey, but with a large group it becomes worth it. Lead singer is cute too!

This place is just wacky! I love it. The best part about it is that it is located in the Fairmont Hotel. You would never guess that it is in this hotel. You walk into what appears to be the Queen of England's house and find a Tiki Bar/Restaurant with a pool! Definitely brings many smiles. On Sat nite there is a band that plays in the middle of the restaurant pool! It is a sight to see! The indoor rain is also a nice touch. I would bring anyone here. It's one of my most favorite and wacky finds in San Fran.

We celevbated my birthday at The Tonga Room and it was woderful. You get a lie when you come in and the ambiance is soothing tropical. Every thirty minutes it would rain. We sat next to the water so we got to see the rain and the band unobstructed. All the service staff was exceptional and the food was amazing. If you like mongolian beef you must try theirs. The meat is actually tenderlion and melts in your mouth. Would recommend to anyone.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2006
    Dined on 9/26/2008
It was good but it was spotty. Some of the drinks were enormous and others were small and poorly made. The food was tasty but it was also very salty and the service was not good. The waiters were really quick to grab people's plates off the tables even thought the restaurant was not very full and there was no one waiting for our table and we weren't lingering. They also added a $50 cover charge to our table which no one told us about beforehand and given that we bought nearly $900 in food and drink was totally gratuitous and for that reason I won't recommend it or give it a good rating on any other sites that I visit to post reviews.

    Dined on 9/26/2008
We had a reservation at 7:00 well before the band started, so we thought the cover charge added to our bill was uncalled for. We were already paying for a very expensive dinner - I could see charging those coming in for drinks only, no parking validdation was also a disappointment. So the total cost of the evening was not at all worth the spend. The food was barely average. Very overpriced for a very average meal and experience. We were very disappointed.

Our group of 6 enjoyed the conversation when the music was off. Ask to be seated by the wall, or the noise level will be too high. Great romantic or special occasion place, dancing to live music. The service is superb, but took a while for them to bring food. The waiters are always there to answer questions and to help. We all loved our food! Do not miss the "black pearl" dessert of white and dark chocolate. This was my 5th visit, and will definitely come again.

The food was great and so was the service. We were seated quickly and had a very attentive waiter. The lei that we received upon being seated at our table was a nice and unexpected treat. The drinks were delicious and the glasses were unique. I purchased one to commemorate the experience. The atmosphere was quite unique. There is a "boat" in the middle of a swimming pool that has been made to look like a lagoon. The boat is actually a stage where musicians perform. Every half hour a rain shower comes down on the sides of the pool and strobe lights flash like lightening. There are ample Asian food choices and several options for rice. We ordered the "Forbidden Rice," which is a blend of red, green, white, and black rice. Delicious!

The place has changed since we were there last time: 1. Tonga Room is kid-friendly indeed...even on the dance floor. 2. Thus, the place is no longer romantic...that it used to be. 3. Food is mediocre with limited choice of alternatives. 4. Asian entres do not come with rice. Steamed rice is a separate order. 5. Entertainment charge is fine for the after dinner crowd. But when you pay US$150 for two, there should be no entertainment charge.

This is a themed restaurant, and from receiving he Lei at the door to the 'Thunderstorm' ( rain over the pool, fake lightening ) it is well done. The food is all Polynesian and carries on the theme. We were a party of nine with four adults and five kids. We were told on the door that as there was a band in we would have to pay a $7 per adult cover, which we thought was OK.The theme was amusing and the band was suitably cheesy (lots of Bee Gees hits ). There is a dance floor, and people were generally having a good time without it being rowdy. The food was OK, and the cocktails were fantastic ( even the cokes came with mini umbrellas ). However it was all very expensive and we felt a little stung by the 7 cover charges ( instead of 4 ).

The Tonga Room is a themed restaurant that intends to make you feel like you are in the tropics. In the middle of the restaurant is a pool of water with a ship in the middle. There are sound and light effects that simulate weather and water that falls from the ceiling to simulate rain. Since it is actual water falling into the pool, it really dos seem like you are eating during a rain shower. Great atmosphere and definitely a unique experience.

I really enjoyed the food, the design of the restaurant and the band. However, our service went from great to v e r y s l o w. After our dinner plates were taken we had to wait 20 minutes for our server to come back to drop off the desert menus and then another 10 minutes for him to come back and take our desert order. I had eaten here a few years ago and it was fun and reasonable. Now the restaurant seemed just as fun, but more elegant (and expensive). The service was attentive, friendly, outstanding. The food itself was very good, if highly americanized (not surprising). I did love the forbidden rice. I think the menu could benefit from a few unusual entrees, nothing too exotic, but perhaps more unique in presentation. The ambiance is great, the thunderstorm every 20 minutes, and the attentive service made it a unique place to entertain out of town guests. Thanks!

Again, just simply - FUN, everyone enjoyed the experience. The food was excellent, the waitstaff attentive and answered all questions graciously, the entertainment enjoyable - great ambience and nice to know that some things never change. How can you change something that is already a winner! A San Francisco classic.
