Diner Reviews
  • "I love the AMBIENCE due to it's Tiki Kitsch, Polynesian decor, complete with the thunder and rain effects. I did almost feel like I was back home in the islands!! I also love the canoes and paddle decor, as well as the Fijian tapa cloth designs on the boat in the pool. I enjoy the historic feeling behind the Tonga Room. The drinks are okay..yet super expensive. Food is alright, also way overpriced. But the entertainment from the band and dance floor makes up for the lack of good food. Other than that, I would return just to show family and friends a tiki kitsch part of SF (even though that's a great example of American appropriation cultural form. Thank you."

  • "Made the reservation open table, np. We got there an hour before our actually reservation time but they still seated us right away, the wait staff was all super nice. We got the punchbowl for 2 and some seafood items. Thw forbidden rices was beautiful and delicious! I wished there was a little bit more of the crab avocado salad, yum! Our waited came out with desert mochi balls for us since they knew it was our anniversary (thanks Opentable!) We felt soo special! They even offered to take a picture for us! We danced a little at the bar after dinner and it was a wonderful evening. Thanks Tonga!"

  • "Set 2 floors below ground in Polynesian decor of bamboo & reed mats. This area was once a underground swimming pool area. The pool is still there with a boat that holds a live band. The band was very good on the nite we dined there. They played 60"s & 70"s rock conducive to dancing. The cuisine was excellent. We had a great time. I will dine there again when we return to San Francisco. The restaurant is located in the Fairmont Hotel."

  • "The resturaunt was just convienent being int the Fairmont hotel since we were staying there but the food was awful, I ordered the beef and broccoli with a side of rice and all I ended up eating was the rice. The punch bowl was amazing though. I ordered two just to fill me up but all 13 of us left hungry and not satisfied with the food so we needed up ordering a pizza. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone but the music the band played was nice to watch. I don't have any complaints against the server but I would say with a crowed with 13 people they might want to have someone help the guy out."

  • "The atmosphere is what it's all about here. The food was average, not bad but nothing to write home about. The atmosphere is fun. The rain storms, the band and the tropical drinks all make for a fun night. The dance floor gets pretty crowded and after a few (strong) drinks it's no wonder! Definitely worth it for the experience."

  • "Cool place to go at least once, music was too loud for a romantic date but pretty cool seeing them on the boat. Small portions for food but it was ok. Good desert and fun time, should go at least once, it's also def for the older crowd."

  • "A great dining experience. Very funky décor and ambiance inside this once swimming pool converted to a restaurant complete with band on floating boat in middle of pool. And I thought thunderstorms and rain inside were too hard to create....Food and service was good without being exceptional, but overall a great, fun experience. Asian fusion food with lots of "Hawaiian inspired" ideas. "The Fairmont" is breathtaking in grandeur with its lobby and ballroom."

  • "We were seated at a poolside table and were served quickly and professionally throughout the meal. Cocktails were very good and the food was prepared well, with a good blend of flavors but not a burst of flavor I might expect from an Asian inspired restaurant. The bar scene was busy and interesting during Happy Hour. The lighting was a little off, maybe a little bright for the room, but overall the restaurant is fun and worth visiting again. We were early and did not see the band that plays in a boat in the middle of the pool, but heard that it was good. We'll return for drinks and music another time this trip."

  • "If you love Hawaiiana you'll love the Tonga Room last visit was 40 years ago. I don't know why I wAited to come back."

  • "We were seated in the center back next to the pool, which 'could" have been cool except that the lighting was harsh and my GF and I could each see into the kitchen from our seats. A server could be seen eating something voraciously (stuffing his mouth) supposedly out of view...unappetizing to say the least."

  • "It was quite atmospheric, beautiful surrounding. The punch bowl is a 'must have.' Too bad service is not quite there yet. Waiter forgot to tell us about the free happy hour buffet items, until the end of it. We also got our neighbour's bill. Otherwise, quite a fun restaurant overall."

  • "The Tonga Room became a bucket list destination for my husband and I, after seeing it featured on Anthony Bourdain's show The Layover. It took a while to get a reservation that coincided with a special occasion - well worth the wait! I make the dinner reservation online and mentioned that it was a birthday dinner and requested a table next to the lagoon. We were greeted with a "Happy Birthday", enjoyed a cocktail at the bar and were escorted to the perfect table. Service was exceptional. The food was fun and good - we ordered one of the Ohana-style meals so there was a steady stream of goodies. Highly recommend!"

  • "This restaurant was highly recommended by a friend. The atmosphere is dated, although some children might find it fun. The food was average and there weren't many suitable choices for kids. My family was disappointed with it overall."

  • "This meal was pricy but was very good. About what you would expect in a high end hotel in a big city resturant."

  • "I've never written an Open Table review but felt compelled to in this case. This restaurant was a huge disappointment in terms of the quality of the food."

  • "Ate dinner early, before the band started, but it was great to do such before the crowds filled the place up. Food was well presented and all the flavors were excellent. Had a hurricane, the salt and pepper shrimp, and whatever else (beef dish), and all was excellent. My wife says the same."

  • "The drink, Hurricane, was awesome. The food was very good. The rain showers and band on the boat was amazing. The service was top notch. I would highly recommend this place."

  • "If you plan to visit San Francisco, make sure to include the Tonga Room in the Fairmont Hotel in your itinerary. Great location with awesome ambience; the combination of Mai Tai, the faux rainfall and the amazing band makes for a great evening with friends. I will certainly make sure to stop by on my next visit to the great city. Highly recommended."

  • "This is a great place for a romantic dinner. Make sure you bring lots of money because you won't be able to leave for less than $150. The band was excellent and you dance on a ship on the lagoon. What could be better? Try the Kung Pao chicken with Forbidden Rice"

  • "We live in Hawaii, and Tonga Room reminded us of the old "real" Hawaii of yesteryear. The restaurant was more Hawaiian than how restaurants in Hawaii are now. Loved the decor, the shower storms and thunder, and the service. Food was good and the MaiTais were tasty but small for 12.00. We will definitely go there again when we are in SF next time."

  • "What a pleasant surprise. The Polynesian theme of the restaurant is executed to the level of a Disney park - in the best wayy. The ambience is great as well as the service. The only detractor was the noise level from the band playing. While that made for a great bar scene, it made dinner conversation difficult. Still very much worth a visit."

  • "I cannot say enough good things about this place. They made my 1year anniversary so special. Seating us by the water the leis added that little special touch. The service I dont think could have been any better it was perfect. The food and drinks were so delicious. If I died that night I would be perfectly content. I just wish I lived closer. Tong Room...you are perfection."

  • "Food was not good. Everything was disguised by sweet teriyaki glazed. Most everything was drenched in sauce to mask taste. Very salty and sugary! Servers were nice but very hard to understand. VERY loud~ unable to carry on a conversation."

  • "The atmosphere is like the Tiki Room at Disneyland which was fun. BUT the food was mediocre ...P.F.Changs or even Pei Wei offers more flavor, and the cost was over the top. This may be located in one of the best hotels in SF based on price but this restaurant was definitely not worth the price we paid. I would never go back. I hear the happy hour is cheaper but I don't drink.!"

  • "Went back to the Tonga Room with a group last Friday. Did the prix fixe dinner since there was 12 of us. The food was fantastic, plenty for everyone. Great variety. And of course you can't beat the Tonga drinks! Service was spot on as usual. The band provided a good selection of dance tunes. Love this joint!"

  • "Tonga’s reputation as the best of a lost dining experience, the Tiki Lounge, is truly deserved. We started with their famous Mai Tai’s, potent, served a campy coconut cup. Calamari w/ Aioli, fresh & fried to perfection. Chilled Soba noodle Salad, light & delicious. Entrees of Huli Huli Chicken & Kalua Pork. We split the Dessert Sampler Platter w/ Mini Gingered Banana Coconut Tarts, Mochi Trio (green tea, coconut & mango sorbets wrapped in rice paper) & Floating Island (Passion Fruit w/ Blue Curacao Anglaise, Coconut Nougat & white chocolate). Great attentive waiter. The band rocked! Everyone was dancing, singing, & laughing. I’m 53 years old & left feeling 23! Great food! Great time! I would go back in a heartbeat! Yummy and Fun Fun Fun!"

  • "The Tonga room is one of the original Tiki bars and is still one of the greatest! This is a must do for any Tiki enthusiast. The food was very good, the service was impeccable and the Tiki drinks were second to none."

  • "The Tonga Room is just awesome. The food is decent and the drinks are GREAT! The main attraction is the polynesian theme and I just love it. It's built around what used to be the pool at the Fairmont Hotel. Complete with a moving boat in the middle that hosts the band. The frequent rain storms, complete with thunder (don't worry, you won't get wet) add to the appeal of the Tonga Room. It's just pure fun."

  • "Celebrating birthday with a group, enjoyed everything except the food and drinks. Food was bland and in small portions. Drinks were mainly ice. Can find better food for half the price. Otherwise, the place was very good."

  • "Beautiful space, filled with slow inattentive waiters, TERRIBLY overpriced, over seasoned, tiny portions. A horrible experience and the worst food I have had in a very long time. I will never go back. Ever."
