A word from Toloache - Upper East Side
Welcome to Toloache (pronounced toh-lo-AH-tchay), chef-owner Julian Medina's contemporary Mexican bistro located in the Upper East Side. Toloache is named after a flowering plant famed in Mexico for its use in love potions. We hope that when you dine with us you too will fall under the spell of chef Medina's creative cooking, which incorporates seasonal and natural ingredients and more than a dozen types of chilies. Along with the authentic Mexican menu and an exceptional tequila list, we offer elegant decorative elements imported from Mexico. We look forward to seeing you soon.Continued

  • "For the price the portions are small but the food and vibe is great!"

  • "Good for them that they were rockin' on a Sunday night. It's pretty crowded and the waiters bumped into my chair every single time they passed. But they're cheerful, the food is extremely tasty, the margaritas are very good and should be for the price. Definitley worth going once and then decide for yourself if the positives are enough to choose it over another place next time."

  • "First rate neighborhood gem, enjoyable food and service."

  • "I heard that this place was good and live nearby. I went on a Tuesday night and it was crowded and had a good vibe. I started with a $13 guacamole which was quite tiny. At places like rosa Mexicano I always share my guacamole with a friend but here I could barely feel satisfied after my measly guacamole and mediocre shrimp taco. Therefore I ordered the carrot cake, hoping that perhaps their desserts might be redeeming. It was not. The carrot cake was dry and the frosting was cakey and tasted deeply odd. I know they were trying to do something creative with it but honestly even the basic part of it was lacking. We sat at a random little table squished all the way in the far back corner. I wouldn't recommend Toloache to a friend."

  • "Delicious margaritas. Great guacamole. Overpriced and small portions."

  • "We were seated in the bar area and asked for a quieter table. The maitre'd recommended a table in the middle room which was definitely quieter and we really enjoyed ourselves. The bar area is lively but not crazy, and the back room is probably for bigger groups. The middle room area is the smallest, with fewer tables, and is therefore quieter. Our server was not particularly warm but service was very efficient and food was fresh and delicious, every single thing we had - vegetarian, meat and fish dishes, across the guacamole, brick oven items, and tortilla menus."

  • "I love the fish tacos here! No, really love!!! I've dined indoors and outdoors...both great!"

  • "I had delicious seared sea scallops, a huitlacoche quesadilla that was divine, and an excellent margarita--I prefer the Oro Blanco. The sauce that comes with the chips is made by the restaurant and can't be beat! A very enjoyable experience."

  • "We were a group of 4 and had the chef selection from the drink menu, delicious and packed a punch, guacamole, tacos and shrimp and salmon entrees were filling and cooked to perfection. For dessert we tired the toloache martini and that was marvelous!"

  • "This is so popular, that you need a reservation. The bar is also packed. The food is Mexican Haute Cuisine, and every dish is a winner. We had a cheese and mushroom quesadila (sp) wit black truffle, which we was a little larger. The margaritas were delicious and fairly priced, We also had a grilled strip steak, which we sharable. Multiple visits are necessary to sample more of the dishes."

  • "Tequila offerings worse by the visit. Sad by now. Two identical fish dishes ordered. One cooked to perfection. The second half raw. Nice place but worse by the visit."

  • "Food is very good. However, portions are middling. Drinks high priced and small. My wife ordered one of the Margarita special drinks at $15. It comes in a small glass which is filled 80% with ice. Very little drink for the money. So overall, good food, but you are rushed and overcharged. Unfortunately, with very few if any good Mexican restaurants on the UES of Manhattan, there aren't many good alternatives."

  • "Not your typical Mexican cuisine. Presentation and taste outstanding."

  • "Took my girlfriend here for Valentine's Day and nailed it, couldn't have been more pleased. They food was amazing, so fresh and not the typical Mexican food just covered in cheese. The food brought up back to the past couple of trips we have taken to Mexico. The service was pretty good given that it was a holiday, I would expect it to be even better on normal nights. This is a place we will definitely be going back to and enjoying the drinks and food. A GREAT find in the UES"

  • "Medina has built a great menu. Very different take on Mexican cuisine. Always enjoy evenings at Toloache."

  • "By far the best Mexican food I've had in Manhattan so far. Great service as well. The only gripe I have is that the tables are pretty small and in most places, very close to other tables. The bill was a little high but I can understand why. I would definitely revisit"

  • "Overall food was good and they had an interesting selection of tequilas. Our major issue was 1) it was super loud and 2) it was way overpriced for what you are getting. A Mexican meal for two adults and 7 year old without wine should not cost nearly $250+ with tip. I"

  • "Great food, drinks, ambience, and service. Only reason I gave this place 3 stars is because it is bit expensive for the amount of food"

  • "We had a wonderful time; the crowd was great, food was tasty, drinks delicious, service was very attentive, and overall experience was lovely. The only but was that no sooner had our dessert plates been cleared then the manager came and asked us to depart our table. He was very kind and generous- offered to buy us a drink - but had he waiting just 2-3 mins we would have departed on our own. It left me with a slightly sour taste only because it seemed so unnecessary. We had been at our table for 90 minutes so not an extraordinarily long time.... Wish he wouldn't have done that. Otherwise was a great night."

  • "Second time there, this time early Saturday evening, service was rushed. food was delicious , trio of guacamole and assortment of tacos all very good Ordered churros, slighty heavier taste on oil--maybe oil was not as fresh or these were refried???? Churros were fantastic last time, this time somewhat disappointing.......... Definitely a neighborhood gem, recommend going off peak hours"

  • "It was hard to hear my husband talk, and we were in a table where everyone constantly walked by us and bumped into his chair. But, we took it upon ourselves to create a little table of calm in the middle of chaos, and when you look at it that way it's not so bad. I do wish the noise level was lower, but the food was fantastic and service was great so we enjoyed Toloache."

  • "Oaxacan chef, but menu features top regional dishes. All but the desserts good to excellent. Attentive, knowledgeable wait staff. No rushing even on a busy night. Reviews accurate in placing it among the best Mexican in NYC and a few blocks due east of the Met."

  • "Nice restaurant with good food and drinks-Service was a bit spotty on the evening that we went."

  • "Just can't get enough of Toloache, which feels like a second home. The staff is warm, friendly and welcoming, the Mexican fare, from delicious guac to fine salads, tacos, quesadillas, chicken and fish specials are all a cut above! and, the ambience can't be beat!!"

  • "While the pomegranate margarita was a little too tart and the dessert tasting underwhelming, the grasshopper tacos, crispy brussels sprouts, bone marrow & short rib quesadilla and generous pours of garnacha made this night a success. It is a good night-out-with-girlfriends kind of place. Lots of thirty-somethings and.forty-somethings groups there."

  • "Flavors are magnificent. The black truffle quesadilla is on the thinnest, crispest crust, black cod with miso and corn is over the top! Great sangria too. We left totally satisfied."

  • "My girlfriend and I live on the upper east side and when we first moved in we decided to explore our new neighborhood. We're self proclaimed foodies and are always in the mood to try something different. On one exploration, we found toloache and have made it our go to spot. The food is outstanding, the staff is friendly and the margaritas are spot on. We've pretty much had everything on the menu at this point and we still continue to go back for date nights or with our friends. Must try!!"

  • "My husband and I love Mexican. We came here on Christmas Eve and were blown away. We each had the cucumber jalapeño margaritas to start - amazing. Refreshing with a kick of jalapeño. I will be searching recipes to replicate this at home. For appetizers we shared the trio of guacamole. Each one was fabulous, even the one with fruit which I was wary of. Our mains were incredible and even my 9 year old was impressed. The service was really great and the room was lively but not too noisy."

  • "We'd heard about this place for a while but could never get a reservation. So glad we persisted. Food was excellent and not the typical Mexican fare. My husband who is only interested in cheese enchaladas (they don't have any) was impressed and enjoyed every bite of his meal. We'll definitely be back."

  • "This is my usual place for fresh food and nice service. Unfortunately (or fortunately?), many more people are eating at this restaurant, making it a little tighter and a little noisier. I think I'll continue coming here for special occasions but I suspect that its popularity and tighter seating will make me look for less 'discovered' restaurants. On a side note, their tequila menu seems to have grown popular as well, but I prefer to focus on the food. Still delicious -- and I hope it continues!"

  • "Just gotta love this "home away from home"...Toloache 82 is simply the best Mexican bistro in the city. Service is warm, friendly, and very efficient to boot...and the food is just sublime! So glad to have them in our neighborhood!!"

  • "Break from usual Tex- Mex. Cramped multiple rooms take some of the joy out of dining here. Hungry eaters may be disappointed at portion sizes. Nice addition to neighborhood which is somewhat of a culinary wasteland."

  • "TolAche is a neighborhood gem. Great bar with endless selection of tequila, attentive and friendly service and outstanding food. The wait staff were well versed on the menu and they made great recommendations for first timers. Not your typical Mexican restaurant. The menu was creative and interesting and the flavors were very distinct. Lovely presentation as well. Cannot wait to go back."
