A word from Toloache Thompson St.
Welcome to Toloache (pronounced toh-lo-AH-tchay), chef-owner Julian Medina’s contemporary Mexican bistro located in Greenwich Village. Toloache is named after a flowering plant famed in Mexico for its use in love potions. We hope that when you dine with us you too will fall under the spell of chef Medina’s creative cooking, which incorporates seasonal and natural ingredients and more than a dozen types of chilies. Our festive, two-story space features a guacamole and ceviche bar and an exceptional tequila list, along with elegant decorative elements imported from Mexico. We're looking forward to seeing you soon.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "It's been tough to find actually good food near NYU. This place is a welcome addition. Wish I could see more huitlacoche though... Service was very friendly and fantastic."

  • "Guacamole was not good. Not much variation of main dishes. The quality didn't meet the price. Very disappointed."

  • "In planning a trip to NYC, our goal was to spend time in various Manhattan "neighborhoods." Greenwich Village was one of those. Toloache was selected for dinner based upon reviews. Although the meal was acceptable, & the upstairs window table was comfortable enough, service was terrible. The waitress was inattentive, even though at 7 PM on a Friday evening we were initially the only patrons upstairs. After being served our non-alcoholic drinks, four requests for "refills" of different waitpersons & the owner who stopped by our table had to be made during the meal. This made for a dining experience that was not what we hoped."

  • "We discovered Toloache by accident, and decided to give it a try. The food was interesting and delicious, the wait staff was very pleasant and helpful. The overall experience was wonderful, and we definitely plan on returning."

  • "We wanted a high-cuisine Mexican class and found Toloache through an internet search and were so pleased with this discovery. The food was amazing - fresh, flavorful, prompt, exquisite - and what we are finding to be a rarity in NYC restaurants these days - the service was attentive, friendly, and efficient and added greatly to the dining experience. Great food. Great service. Great tequila."

  • "The food was so good here, the guac could have been saltier though :) the service was a little slower but it worked out for the birthday group to have a long fun dinner"

  • "The best mexican food in Soho. Great to watch games and get together with friends for lunch and drinks."

  • "Excellent food matched with a very friendly vibe. One of the better Mexican food joints in the city!"

  • "Nice solid fare. Nothing stood out but a good mexican staple restaurant to know if you're craving some good guacamole and such."

  • "This downtown branch is doing a splendid job keeping the Toloache tradition in fine form. It's real Mexican food, not ersatz Tex-Mex, with a varied and interesting menu. "

  • "Excellent Mexican food, probably the best in the city."

  • "I've been to several locations in the city and can't find anything to complain about at any of them. The food is always delicious, the service is amazing and the vibe is always lively. You can't go wrong taking a group to Toloache!"

  • "After returning to NYC from my SanFrancisco home, first stop (seriously, luggage and all) was Toloache! Have been looking forward to the Triple Guacamole appie for months, the huite lacocha was even better than I remembered, and the truffle-gazed black cod was off-the-charts. I wish we had a Toloache in SF!!! (I know, ironic, right?)"

  • "Food is amazing, my favorite Mexican in the city! Very very good!"

  • "the service was painfully slow but the food is outstanding!!!"

  • "The ceviche was truly wonderful. Tacos excellent. We were a group of ten and it was fun and great food for everyone. Usually, restaurants that accomodate groups are not terribly good... but Toloache is a find. "

  • "Really nice menu, good cooking, nice service, in the top set of Mexican restos downtown. Note: it is noisy (beyond energetic)."

  • "Tolache is a great spot for girlfriends and dates...the food is relish...it appears that they give you small plates but you leave full and having enjoyed the food. The beef ribs are killer...i mean just melt in your mouth...the dips are authentic...loved everything about my night...company was great, sit by a window if you can, cause the spicy dip makes you sweat its so good."

  • "On a beautiful evening we were able to secure a table upstairs by the open window, the street scene below was most active and interesting. We had a selection of various house specialties and enjoyed each one. It's great for sharing this really high end Mexican food, very well presented. The drinks were really good and the service commensurate with the ambience and delicious food.Enjoyed a pleasant evening!"

  • "I wanted to find a nice restaurant for my husbands birthday. What we got was definitely more! The Service was great (my husband got a birthday dessert and they sang for him!), the ambience felt really true and good and the food was sooo delicious! What a enjoyable dinner!"

  • "It's a little more pricey than most Mexican places you've been to, but I think it's worth it. Guac was fantastic, the margaritas were varied and delicious, and the food was delightful. Throw in a few good friends and you got yourself a great time."

  • "went for brunch (they just started serving it). wasn't as good as other locations. they need to step up their game here or it will always be as empty as it was when we were there."

  • "Went on a Saturday night and like every restaurant in New York, it was busy--great restaurants overcome this and you don't even notice. Toloache needs work. Reservation was at 9pm for three. Arrived at 8:55, was told "a few minutes," and pointed towards the bar area. Now here's the big first test for a restaurant and expectation management: you know it's going to be more than "a few minutes" and a reservation was made and accepted, do you be honest? Or do you shuffle them over to the bar and hope they don't notice. Some nights, I wouldn't, but the three of us were crazy hungry, so we did. No word from host for 25 mins. We went over and asked ourselves (something no one should ever need to do) at 9:20. Got seated at 9:30. Very good food."

  • "Celebrated birthday with my mum who is visiting and a big fan of Mexican food. Margaritas were well made and the food was very delicious. As simple as it was, the toasted tomatoes sauce was amazing with guacamole and chips. It is a small place but it was a good time. "

  • "In an area that has tons of Italian restaurants Toloache is a nice change of pace. It was excellent, every thing we had was really good. We went out with another couple and everyone raved about their meals. It was pretty loud but not terrible. You could bring a kid here easily as whatever noise they made would just blend right in. I highly recommend this place."

  • "On a Friday night it was full, best Mexican food, great service!"

  • "Enjoyed early dinner on Sunday night. Only one other table was occupied. We had great service. Menu had many fancy options everything we ordered was tasty but portions are very small. We ordered guacamole which was delicious but we weren't given enough chips to eat it all. Margarita was good but small served in a short "rocks" glass. If you are used to Mexican restaurants with hearty portions, bottomless chips and salsa, and super sized beverages - you will be disappointed."

  • "We went with a group of friends on Saturday noon for brunch. The food was delicious but overpriced. The service was extremely slow despite the fact that the restaurant was empty and although the waiters and staff were nice and friendly we had to constantly waive at them to get their attention and even go downstairs to get them to come upstairs and take our order. This was a huge disappointment. The ambiance is nice and definitively good for groups but with so many other great options in the city with a better service I don't think that I would go back here."

  • "When the midtown location was unable to accommodate our party of 8 family members for an early dinner after a Saturday matinee, we booked Toloache Thompson St. We had a terrific time. I especially enjoyed the mezcalita de piña, all four ceviches and the fried brussels sprouts. Those in our group who ordered the grasshopper tacos loved them. Our waiter was very knowledgeable, helpful with recommendations and attentive, and everything we ordered was delicious. Toloache is a great place for a special occasion group dinner or anytime you want high-quality Mexican food."

  • "They had me google it, not that i needed to, but they've been voted BEST GUACAMOLE in all of AMERICA! 2014!!"

  • "Months ago, we accidentally stumbled into the Toloache on the Upper East, loved it, and we were afraid the Toloache downtown would not be able to reproduce the experience. Boy, were we wrong. The service here is non-stop and unobtrusive. The food is some of the best Mexican food I've ever had. Don't miss the Sea Urchin ceviche and the short rib quesadilla! Plus, the margaritas are fantastic, and the guacamole is hit-your-knees and thank God you're alive."

  • "The Margarita, chips & dip were promising, but things went downhill from there. It took too long to place our order, but we were still happy until the food arrived. The steak was way too salty. Fish tacos were stuffed and not tasty, topped with mayonnaise. This wasn't the Mexican food we'd hoped to find."
