A word from Toloache-Midtown
Welcome to Toloache (pronounced toh-lo-AH-tchay), chef-owner Julian Medina’s contemporary Mexican bistro located in the heart of the Theater District. Toloache is named after a flowering plant famed in Mexico for its use in love potions. We hope that when you dine with us you too will fall under the spell of chef Medina’s creative cooking, which incorporates seasonal and natural ingredients and more than a dozen types of chilies. Our festive, two-story space features a guacamole and ceviche bar, a wood-burning oven, and an exceptional tequila list, along with elegant decorative elements imported from Mexico. We looking forward to seeing you soon.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Taoloache's Passover Seder menu was a wonderful and creative alternative to our typical at-home celebration and added some new flavors to traditional dishes. I look forward to dining here again for a non-holiday meal."

  • "This is the scond time we have ate at Toloache when visiting NYC. This time we brought a friend who was married to a Mexican for a while and lived in Mexico. She gave the restaurant high praises for authenticity and kept saying the rest of of the day how great the meal was. We thoughly enjoy eating here. My only negative comment is that both times, once in summer and once it early spring, it is very warm in the restaurant. I would advise dressing light."

  • "We went there for brunch. I ordered the breakfast burrito and a couple of drinks. We also had the guacamole to start. Both the food and drinks are good - not great, but good. The service was very good. All the servers were very polite and attentive. I would go again."

  • "This was our second visit. Often your first experience can never be repeated, but at Toloache, we were wowed and our expectations met! Fabulous food, quick and friendly service and the best frozen margaritas ever!"

  • "My wife and I were going to the theatre and looking for a good restaurant nearby. A friend had recommended this restaurant a while ago and this was our first time dining there. Deliciously prepared food with great Mexican flavors. The staff was friendly and attentive, timing their service to get us to our show on schedule without making us feel rushed. We'll definitely be back."

  • "Really like the guacamole with mango and the fish tacos. Service was good, but they really hover over you. I understand that the restaurant is small and they want to get business moving, but I don't like having my meal cleared from the table before I am finished dining."
    Dined on 4/9/2014
  • "We really enjoyed our dinner here. The guacamole was superb as was our skirt steak entree. Dessert was shared by the three of us. It was the molten chocolate cake. It was rich and delish. It is quite loud here...but the food was special. We will go back."

  • "Gets really crowded pre-theater times, but they'll get you right in if you have a reservation. Everything was delicious! The guacamole was some of the best I've ever had."
    Dined on 4/11/2014
  • "The food was awesome as always. Fresh ingredients and we even got our friends to try the tres guacamole. Reservations are a must but the staff was friendly and accommodating. Our other couple got delayed by POTUS being in town but the hostess still sat us and was very understanding for it being a busy Friday night. We loved the dinner and will be back again."

  • "Incredible fresh and tasty food and great ambiance with such a warm and friendly staff and management! Thank you everyone for the feast! I'll be back for more... Lou Manna"

  • "Amazing food (my picky eaters from 3 to 70 y.o. even ordered more), absolutely awesome staff, friendly and extremely fast. Would come again for sure."

  • "Since my friend and I had theater tickets for a Wednesday matinee, I needed a restaurant that served a nice lunch for a reasonable price. Let me start by saying, your taste buds will thank you. If you enjoy Mexican food, this is authentic upscale Mexican cuisine . Guacamole with pomegranate ? Crazy yes, but it works! I had the langosta (lobster) tacos, flavor unbelievable. My friend had the torta ahogada, which is a pork carnitas sandwich, really delish. A little red sangria to wash it all down, and churros to top it off for dessert. The broadway show was good, I think the lunch at Toloache was better."

  • "Great food, amazing margaritas and fantastic service!"

  • "The service is friendly and fast, the food is for the most part very good. A bit pricey, but that is the neighborhood. On a recent evening there, pre-theater, the place was packed and lively--upstairs and down. The dessert wasn't very good (flan). Overall enjoyed this place very much. The food was very tasty and fresh."

  • "Our family came across Toloache in a search to find a restaurant near the Gershwin Theatre. The reviews were fantastic and we now understand why. The food is creative and delicious. The margaritas were outstanding. There were plenty of options for me, being a vegetarian, and the other carnivores in my family. My kids (10 and 12) are not terribly adventurous eaters and their simple tastes were accommodated. Our server was extremely attentive and polite. We returned a week later before leaving New York because everything was so great and our server remembered us -which I think is quite something as they must see many new faces, being in Times Square area. We would not hesitate to return again on another trip to New York."

  • "I have frequented the Toalache on the UES for a few years now, but have never visited its midtown sister. Same fantastic food, better service in midtown, compared to my last UES visit. However, if you are looking for a place to dine and hear your companion(s) without straining, this may not be the place. At least not on a Saturday night at 9pm. The place was hopping, tables turning every few minutes until 11pm, which I believe is when they do their last seating. It may be a little calmer other nights, but I could hardly hear my guest, and I don't have any hearing issues normally. That said, the margaritas are always great, and i've never had a dish here I didn't end up loving."

  • "Was meeting old friends in NYC for a girls weekend and wanted a fun place with great food! After reading other reviews we chose this restaurant and we were not disappointed! Everyone loved their dishes, and the drinks were great. They had an amazing selection of tequilas, great margaritas and sangrias. Fast service, great food! Would definitely recommend to anyone!"

  • "This is, hands down, one of my favorite Mexican restaurants in NYC. The location is perfect, the staff are always efficient and friendly and the food is always delicious. My hands down favorite order is the "Trio de Guacamoles" with any one of their Margaritas! Be sure to save room for dessert because their Flan with Coffee caramel sauce is crazy good!"

  • "As usual, food and drinks were exceptionally delicious! However, it was extremely hot in the restaurant, and my party was cramped around a small table :("

  • "Having spent the better part of last year living in Chelsea and frequenting spots downtown, we were up in NY for a rainy weekend staying in mid-town and didn't feel like venturing south. We found this place on Yelp and after reading the reviews both on that site and Opentable, figured we'd try this spot even though it is in mid-town, home to many touristy restaurants. We are so glad we took a chance, this place has great energy and great food. The staff were pleasant, the ambience was fantastic, and the food was even better. Definitely would eat here again and recommend to friends staying in the area."

  • "We've been searching for a non-touristy yet budget friendly centrally located restaurant and this is it!! Food and service were excellent, charming wait staff & great prices and location. The guacamole was excellent--all in our party of four enjoyed their tacos! We will definitely be back."

  • "We had a fantastic dinner. The hamachi ceviche was sooo good. We have several food intolerances in our family and the staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating. Delicious margarita menu too!!!"

  • "Great food. We had Guacamole Trio, Quesadillas, Tacos, and Dessert. Only reason not 5 stars is too many "appetizer" size options."

  • "I went to Toloache midtown for RW for lunch. Everything from food to service was great! The food was so delicious, I booked RW again for dinner the week after. Steak, tacos, Brussels sprouts, sweet plaintains, and tres leches were all wonderful."

  • "Took my daughter and her 3 teenage friends here before a show. We arrived at 11:30 and the place was nearly empty. We received incredibly attentive service at the start. All of our menu questions were answered and one of two fellows who waited on us during the meal gave excellent recommendations. Everything we ordered was spectacular. We sat at a table near the stone oven and the girls enjoyed watching the guacamole chef create her magic at a station right in front of our table. We spent a leisurely 2 hours at the restaurant with appetizers, main, and dessert. The place filled up around 12 and then our service became a little slower. The atmosphere and food exceeded any expectations I had. Would love to return here!"

  • "Food and service was absolutely fabulous. Toulache-Midtown has become one of my favorites!"
    Dined on 3/29/2014
  • "Pros: decent guacamole, good avocado fries, good steak and eggs. Cons: tacos embarrassingly small and tasted of little other than spice (that is, not much beef flavor). Total ripoff for $17. Soup not flavorful and portion was meager. Emptied my soda halfway through but never offered a refill. For some reason they brought the sides with the first course so had no sides with our entrees. The mole enchilada was flavorless. Won't be back."

  • "It's the second time in NY and the second time in Toloache, for us is very nice and the food fantastic, specially the guacamole in three different way. We really recommend it!"

  • "Every time we are in NYC we make it a point to eat at least one meal here. Never been disappointed."

  • "We’ve eaten at Toloache’s many times and are never disappointed. Consistency is a good word. The triple guacamole can be a dinner by itself. The brisket the other night was so well seasoned. The combination of that with avacodo and sour cream was perfect.Pork tacos were superb. They had just the right bit of crunch. And then dessert. It’s one of the few places I splurge and eat one! The churros with chocolate and caramel sauce melt in your mouth."

  • "I recently made my second visit to Toloache in midtown, and the food quality was again excellent. This is a special occasion kind of restaurant for us - something we did pre-theater this time - as the prices are high. But the location is superb for the theater district and the food has not disappointed. They really do take food we often buy cheap, and elevate it. When we arrived for a 5 PM seating one weeknight, the place was predictably quiet. By 6 PM nearly every seat was filled, and the place buzzed."
