Toloache-MidtownUpscale Mexican dining . . .My husband and I discovered Toloache almost a year ago and recently went back for a second visit since we were going to a Broadway show and wanted a spot that was convenient to the theater and open late. We took family who was visiting us for the weekend and who love Mexican food and they thought it was great too. The shrimp entree is delicious! And the trio of guacamoles is equally as good. A great spot to share some plates and get a little bit of everything! I'm looking forward already to visit number three!6/14/2013 12:00:00 AMFood Tasty, Somewhat loud and closeHostess and wait staff were friendly, but like many NYC restaurants seating is tight and noise level quite high. Food was good and prices reasonable.6/12/2013 12:00:00 AMThis is not your Grandmother'sThis is not your Grandmother's Mexican food! Don't go looking for traditional dishes (but the guachamole was fantastic) but REALLY flavorful modern interpretations.6/12/2013 12:00:00 AMWe thoroughly enjoyed ourWe thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience from the drinks all the way to the dessert. The quality and presentation of everything was fabulous and we would definitely go back and recommend this restaurant to others.6/7/2013 12:00:00 AMNo complains. Excellent food!Great, friendly service as well! Highly recommended!!6/4/2013 12:00:00 AMAnother great timeWe've been to Toloache a few times... Always great food, prompt and pleasant service. A bit noisy but overall good ambience.
Mains are great as well, but our staples are the guacamole and mango or coconut mojitos6/3/2013 12:00:00 AMCreative Culinary ExperienceThere were so many items we had never seen on a food menu before and all of them were exceptional. The fruit Guacamole was delicious and so were the avocado fries. Hamachi was delicious.
I would recommend this to anyone. This place is better than, Maya, Pampano, Rosa Mex...it may be the best Mexican in the city.6/2/2013 12:00:00 AMWish we had this place in Florida!!Loved the food and the service! I was looking for some gourmet Mexican and specialty drinks for our quick weekend in NYC. It was so easy to make a reservation on Open Table, we loved the atmosphere and our server was so friendly. The spicy quacamole, the short rib tacos & Lechon Prensado were amazing! Wish I could have tried the ceviche too...6/1/2013 12:00:00 AMOutstandingThe food was outstanding and so was the service! I had a plain mojito, not too sweet, not too tart - just perfect!6/1/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat choice for pre-theatreGreat choice for pre-theatre meal. Food and service were excellent. Shrimp dishes were outstanding as was the guacamole. We were only able to get a 5 pm reservation on OpenTable but, when the restaurant called to confirm, were able to get a later time which worked much better. Same thing happened with another OpenTable reservation the night before.5/31/2013 12:00:00 AMPerfect Pre-Theatre Hot SpotIf you're going to see "Peter and the Starcatcher," grab a margarita, guacamole and shrimp tacos here before you head a block west for the amazing show!5/29/2013 12:00:00 AMNice Find Near Times SquareWere here for a work dinner and all enjoyed the meal. Highlights were the medium guacamole, which was talked about the day afterwards how amazingly good the mix of fruit and veggies were enjoyed. Drinks were good and the recommendations from the waitress were spot on and enjoyed by all.5/29/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat Pretheatre DiningWe had a very enjoyable pre-theatre meal with a little out of the ordinary Mexican cuisine. Our waiter definitely added to the experience, making great suggestions of his favorites on the menu. Would definitely come back when in the area.5/29/2013 12:00:00 AMMexican the way it should be done..Excellent after-theater dinner. The food was delicious, the ambience festive, and the waitstaff could not have been more attentive. Although traditional in its basic ingredients, the food is prepared in a modern way, using international ingredients. The tacos are a perfect appetizer. The chocolate cake is a perfect ending.5/26/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent Mexican! We booked this following a google search of restaurants in the Times Square area - we were absolutely delighted! Prompt, attentive service and excellent food. Had a great buzz and we thoght it was the best meal on our 5day trip. We live in London so sadly it might be a while till we can go back!5/26/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat dining experience! We loved Toloache! The food was exquisitely favored and healthy--not too salty or greasy like some Mexican restaurants. Also, the desserts were outstanding.
We so enjoyed the experience so much that we ate there twice in one day. We will definitely go back5/25/2013 12:00:00 AMearly dinnerLOVED the guacamole trio! It came with a delicious roasted tomato sauce on the side. (and I don't even eat tomatos!)
I'd go back for that alone!
My husband tried the tasting of 4 ceviches and had mixed revues. Two he liked, one he loved, and one he didn't like at all.
The service was friendly and their timing was great. They are prepared for the theater goers. We had extra time and they did not rush us for the table at all.
The quesadillas and tacos were small which was perfect after eating all that guac!5/25/2013 12:00:00 AMFirst Night TreatWe had literally just landed in New York and having seen this place recommended we had pre booked a table. The atmosphere was vibrant and the staff welcoming and attentive. The venue is small but that adds to the atmosphere. Food choices were extensive and everything was delicious! Would definately go again ~ if we are luckjy enough to find ourselves back in New York.5/24/2013 12:00:00 AMLively, fun, Mexican food! We've been here twice and the food has been great both times. The small tacos make a great pre-theater meal that's not too heavy. Their basic margaritas are excellent. The service is good, but distracted. Our theater timing turned into a problem.5/23/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat Mexican fare in NYCToloache was a truly nice surprise! We made a reservation, which is a must - and were seated immediately. The food was delicious and the server was attentive but not hovering. Very busy and bustling but in a nice, NYC way. We even had a celebrity sighting!5/22/2013 12:00:00 AMGood Mexican but too noisyFood and service were very good but noise level almost excruciating.5/22/2013 12:00:00 AMAuthentically deliciousWe love Toloache-Midtown. We work it into our schedule every time we're in the city. Food is always fresh and delicious. Enjoy the guacamole with fruit. YUM!5/20/2013 12:00:00 AMDelicious food and drinks!!!Delicious food and drinks!!! The bartenders are very friendly and extremely helpful. Mine and my boyfriend's favorite spot to go in Manhattan!5/19/2013 12:00:00 AMexcellent food but serviceexcellent food but service can be a problem at times5/19/2013 12:00:00 AMSecond VisitOur first visit in 2012 was after theatre. The food was so good we just had to go back for dinner.
Just did so last Sunday. A very busy and upbeat place and the food is still very yummy.
Beware though of the spicy guacamole if your tummy is a little sensitive to high heat.
Try the regular instead.
Great cocktails as well.5/19/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent Food - Too loud upstairsThe first time we ate at Toloache Midtown it was perfect - we miraculously got a walk-in table and enjoyed margaritas and ceviche and guacamole samplers. This time we had a reservation. The food was excellent once again - that's why we came, that's why we'll return. However, I'll make a point of trying to sit downstairs when we return because the upstairs was too cramped and too loud.5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMNever DisappointsAs always, was wonderful - from the drinks to the food to the staff, this place never disappoints. Despite the restaurant almost always being on the busy side, the service is always attentive, friendly, and energetic. Love this place!5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMSimply DeliciousFood, drinks and service were fantastic. This is not your typical Mexican place. The flavors are authentic and sophisticated, presented in a more upscale presentation. And the drinks are so good! Simply delicious.5/17/2013 12:00:00 AMPre-Broadway Delicious DinnerThe cocktails and food at Toloache were knockouts. I had a passion fruit and tequilla based cocktail that was sweet, sour and powerful. I almost couldn't stand up. The guacomole with fruit, our appetizer, was perfect. My main course was excellent, black cod in a sweet and smoky/spicy corn sauce. The side dish of brussel sprouts was bursting with flavor. My only issue was the noise level. You had to talk quite loud to be heard. The staff knew we were going to a Broadway show and took orders and brought out food promptly. Altogether it was a great start to a great evening.5/15/2013 12:00:00 AMFood and drinks are alwaysFood and drinks are always outstanding. I visit this restaurant each time I am at the theater. Michael5/15/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat for after Broadway showWe had a 7:oo play and did not want to eat before the play and we had been to this restuarant before. We enjoyed the food very much and had great service.5/14/2013 12:00:00 AMWay too noisy on the groundWay too noisy on the ground level for conversation !5/14/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat Mexican Food w/ unique twistsThe food and drinks were great at this place. Lobster civiche and talapia tacos were great! I would definitely go back again.5/14/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat food but did ask us to leaveAsked us to leave once bill was paid which I didn't love. So if u wanna do quick dinner before show great but if u wanna hang out with friends not great because they will ask you to leave once you pay and they don't care what you think anymore5/13/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat Night at ToloacheHad a lovely mother's day dinner here. Finding a good Mexican restuarant that has an authentic taste is very hard to find in the city. Toloache takes everyday Mexican food and elevates it to a high class menu. They refine classics, recreating them yet maintaining their essence. I love everything on this menu and will be eating there again! Oh and the margaritas are delicious!5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMLove it!Always a restaurant we eat at whenever we visit manhattan ! We have been there four times, and each time they remember my extensive food allergies and accommodate me.5/8/2013 12:00:00 AMBest Mexican Restaurant! This is by far the best Mexican restaurant in NY. Food is consistently amazing (don't go if you expect "TexMex and heavy burritos"), service is always wonderful and the managers work the room like you are visiting their own home! i have taken clients, co-workers (one of my bosses!), family and friends and they all continue to rave about how good it is! a true dining experience, a wonderful night out (or lunch or brunch!)5/8/2013 12:00:00 AMVibrant friendly excellent food.Mexican food on the East coast this is it!! Friendly staff. Great guacamoles & chips with excellent entrees. Fun, vibrant ambiance. A must in NYC.5/8/2013 12:00:00 AMVery nice place for pre-theatreThis was a very nice and lively place for pre-theatre dinner and drinks; very good food - and a wonderfully cheery and helpful server.5/7/2013 12:00:00 AMI enjoyed the food, albeitI enjoyed the food, albeit small portions. The place was hopping and atmosphere very festive as it was Cinco de Mayo and crowded.
Mexican motif added to the ambiance and menu, albeit somewhat limited, was a good cross section of Mexican options. Tacos de Carne Asada were delicious.5/5/2013 12:00:00 AMcinco de mayowhere else would one want to be but here? We had a great time, the servers were a little overwhelmed at first, then it settled down. We loved the Mariachis too.5/5/2013 12:00:00 AMCinco de mayoWent for dinner on may 5 th and the food was amazing. Probably the best Mexican I've had to date. Steak tacos and lobster tacos were wonderful. Especially the steak. The spicy guac was so good and the short ribs were as tender and flavorful as you can get. Even the quinoa was awesome. Service was a little slow but it was a holiday. The waitress was so nice5/5/2013 12:00:00 AMBest Guac in NYCYou must AT LEAST order the rojo guacamole (it's the spicy one, but it's not too spicy). If you have a party of at least 4 people, order the trio of guac (three different varieties). At $21, it might sound pricey for an appetizer, but it is so worth it. I say at least 4 people because if you have fewer, you will all fill up on the guacamole and won't have any room for your meal. And sit on the ground level so you can watch the ladies making the guac from scratch. (People think it's great when they pull the cart up to your table at Rosa Mexicano to mash the avocados right in front of you, but that's over priced and this guac is better.)
After that, my go-to is the fish tacos. They are the best I've had in the Northeast.5/5/2013 12:00:00 AMPre TheaterOne of the best pre theater restaurants I have visted. Very crowded, but service was still very attentive & hte quality of the food was very good.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMTried Toloache -Midtown forTried Toloache -Midtown for the first time and would definately go back. It had a fun and friendly vibe and the food was outstanding. My husband loved his tortilla soup and short rib tacos. I had skirt steak and an awesome sangria. The service was fast and the wait staff friendly and helpful.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMDelicious, but noisyMy second visit to Toloache was as rewarding as my first. It remains a favorite. I only wish the noise level were lower. I really hate shouting at the person across the table.5/3/2013 12:00:00 AMexcellent service, delicious foodWent here for my birthday. The staff was extremely helpful and friendly. It was a very busy Friday night right before Cinco de Mayo and they were still very attentive. The portions are on the small side, but it was enough food--and the dishes were unique and very tasteful. It is a bit tight to sit downstairs, but I'd def go again. We got there at 6:30 and they could easily get us out by an 8 pm show.5/3/2013 12:00:00 AMDelilshExcellent food through and through, no matter which dish I try.
It was excessively noisy but I accidentally visited on Cinco de Mayo weekend.
That was my ONLY complaint.
Excellent tequila list and inventive variations on the classic margarita.5/3/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent but priceyA bit pricey but worth it! Excellent food and outstanding service.5/1/2013 12:00:00 AMMy favorite resaurant! This is my favorite NY restaurant hands down!!! It's always packed (ususally with the theather crowd) and you have to reserve in advance to get in but ...the food and service is amazing! And they margaritas and wine list are great too. They never ever have an "off" night. 5 stars!!5/1/2013 12:00:00 AM
