A word from Toloache-Midtown
Welcome to Toloache (pronounced toh-lo-AH-tchay), chef-owner Julian Medina’s contemporary Mexican bistro located in the heart of the Theater District. Toloache is named after a flowering plant famed in Mexico for its use in love potions. We hope that when you dine with us you too will fall under the spell of chef Medina’s creative cooking, which incorporates seasonal and natural ingredients and more than a dozen types of chilies. Our festive, two-story space features a guacamole and ceviche bar, a wood-burning oven, and an exceptional tequila list, along with elegant decorative elements imported from Mexico. We looking forward to seeing you soon.Continued

  • "Great food, lovely service, nice place to eat especially before taking in a broadway show."

  • "My go to place in the theater district. I love it from every aspect. Small intimate setting, fantastic servers, great food, and wonderful drinks. Great tequila menu."

  • "Nice cocktail menu, the food was not memorable. The portions were small, and good, but not likely to go back."

  • "The food was great! Our server was excellent. They made sure that we were on time for our show. She even gave us directions afterward. We loved it"

  • "Went here randomly on a Saturday night and it was so surprising. I had a blueberry/lime margarita which was amazing. We got an order of guacamole, which was so delicious and split three orders of appetizer sized tacos. It was the perfect amount of food and everything was delicious. I would recommend this place to anyone! "

  • "I love this Oaxacan gem near the theater district, but I would love it more if the music didn't blast you out of your seat. It's impossible to hear the waiters, carry on a conversation or avoid a headache with the music piercing your ear lobes. I want to return, but I've got to be measured for hearing aids. Please?"

  • "My girl friend and I had a fantastic dinner experience at Toloache-Midtown. We reserved the table for birthday celebrations and were greeted by friendly waiting staff who were happy to drop off a bottle of Prosecco and make recomendations from the menu. All 3 courses were delicious including the complimentary dessert that accompanied a rendition of "Happy Birthday" for my girl friend - I would definitely return here for the service and food! A great occasion, great food and fantastic service."

  • "We were very pleased by the quality of the food, the attentive, personable service and the general ambience. The Margaritas (I prefer classic style but there are lots of variations) are masterfully prepared and we didn't take a bite that wasn't absolutely delicious. We can highly recommend the ceviches, some of which are Peruvian style, and the short ribs live up to their reputation. The churros are sublime . The manager came over to chat with us, adding a personal touch that we highly appreciated. While the atmosphere is lively, this is not the kind of cheap place you come to get loaded on tequila and carbs. The cuisine is refined, reminding us of some of the best restaurants in Mexico. "

  • "This was a nice find in the Theater/Times Square District. We had the Frutus Guacamole with chips as our appetizer. It was a very large serving and the guacamole was interesting with the addition of pomegranate seeds. For our main dishes we had the Camerones Toloache and the Tumbada. Both were excellent and came with a large amount of fresh tasting seafood. Wish we were with a larger group so we could have tried more items on the menu. Plan to return on our next trip to NYC. "

  • "Overall it was a decent experience. My wife's Quesedilla de Pollo was very good. Their signature Pollo Toloache dish that I had was decent, but way overpriced in my opinion. Really everything was overpriced. With my entree, her appetizer quesedilla, a guac app, 2 small sides, and 3 drinks total between us, it was well over $100 (almost $150 after gratuity). Plus we were right on top of the people seated on both sides (to the point where it was difficult for all parties to get in and out of their seats). It wasn't bad, but I wouldn't go again."

  • "Excellent restaurant and great service. I was with my in-laws who were visiting the US for the first time from Spain. This was their first try at Mexican food and Toloache did not let me down. This was my first time but had heard great things. Extremely happy I went with Toloache to introduce them to Mexican food. They can be a bit picky with foods outside of traditional Spanish cuisine but they found the dishes here bursting with vibrant flavors and delightful aromas. The waiter was extremely friendly and talked about futball with us for awhile. I will recommend to all my friends who visit NYC in the future. "

  • "Delicious food in a vibrant atmosphere. Make reservations if you are planning on going before a show - long wait."
    Dined on 4/17/2014
  • "Great food and service. We enjoyed the vast selection of small plates as 6:00 pre-theatre time is too early for us to eat a full meal. We had quesadilla and pork tacos. Chips and salsa were great. They did not rush us at all. Highly recommend. "

  • "We went for Passover dinner, and not only was there a special Passover menu, but every item was absolutely spectacular! Definitely recommended for folks who are keeping kosher for Passover and looking for variation. The Tacos de Brisket and Matzo Ball Soup were particularly fantastic."

  • "The guacamole was the best I've ever had. Went here before a show and loved the food and atmosphere, can't wait to go back! "

  • "Tried for the first time and the food was great. Would definitely return. "

  • "The place is very loud. They obviously do their business in pre-theater dining. Our server was very nice and attentive, but they try to upsell you and rush you through from the first sentence. Sangria and margaritas were good. Tacos were tasty, but queso fundito with chorizo was bland. My entree, Lechon was fatty and not hot enough. It's accompanying corn pudding was good but the pickled vegetables were hot? and tasteless. My husbands Carne Asada was good but not great. His potatoes were terrible. I'd skip this one. "

  • "Taoloache's Passover Seder menu was a wonderful and creative alternative to our typical at-home celebration and added some new flavors to traditional dishes. I look forward to dining here again for a non-holiday meal."

  • "This is the scond time we have ate at Toloache when visiting NYC. This time we brought a friend who was married to a Mexican for a while and lived in Mexico. She gave the restaurant high praises for authenticity and kept saying the rest of of the day how great the meal was. We thoughly enjoy eating here. My only negative comment is that both times, once in summer and once it early spring, it is very warm in the restaurant. I would advise dressing light."

  • "We went there for brunch. I ordered the breakfast burrito and a couple of drinks. We also had the guacamole to start. Both the food and drinks are good - not great, but good. The service was very good. All the servers were very polite and attentive. I would go again."

  • "This was our second visit. Often your first experience can never be repeated, but at Toloache, we were wowed and our expectations met! Fabulous food, quick and friendly service and the best frozen margaritas ever!"

  • "My wife and I were going to the theatre and looking for a good restaurant nearby. A friend had recommended this restaurant a while ago and this was our first time dining there. Deliciously prepared food with great Mexican flavors. The staff was friendly and attentive, timing their service to get us to our show on schedule without making us feel rushed. We'll definitely be back."

  • "Really like the guacamole with mango and the fish tacos. Service was good, but they really hover over you. I understand that the restaurant is small and they want to get business moving, but I don't like having my meal cleared from the table before I am finished dining."

  • "We really enjoyed our dinner here. The guacamole was superb as was our skirt steak entree. Dessert was shared by the three of us. It was the molten chocolate cake. It was rich and delish. It is quite loud here...but the food was special. We will go back."

  • "Gets really crowded pre-theater times, but they'll get you right in if you have a reservation. Everything was delicious! The guacamole was some of the best I've ever had."

  • "The food was awesome as always. Fresh ingredients and we even got our friends to try the tres guacamole. Reservations are a must but the staff was friendly and accommodating. Our other couple got delayed by POTUS being in town but the hostess still sat us and was very understanding for it being a busy Friday night. We loved the dinner and will be back again."

  • "Since my friend and I had theater tickets for a Wednesday matinee, I needed a restaurant that served a nice lunch for a reasonable price. Let me start by saying, your taste buds will thank you. If you enjoy Mexican food, this is authentic upscale Mexican cuisine . Guacamole with pomegranate ? Crazy yes, but it works! I had the langosta (lobster) tacos, flavor unbelievable. My friend had the torta ahogada, which is a pork carnitas sandwich, really delish. A little red sangria to wash it all down, and churros to top it off for dessert. The broadway show was good, I think the lunch at Toloache was better."

  • "Great food, amazing margaritas and fantastic service!"

  • "The service is friendly and fast, the food is for the most part very good. A bit pricey, but that is the neighborhood. On a recent evening there, pre-theater, the place was packed and lively--upstairs and down. The dessert wasn't very good (flan). Overall enjoyed this place very much. The food was very tasty and fresh."

  • "Our family came across Toloache in a search to find a restaurant near the Gershwin Theatre. The reviews were fantastic and we now understand why. The food is creative and delicious. The margaritas were outstanding. There were plenty of options for me, being a vegetarian, and the other carnivores in my family. My kids (10 and 12) are not terribly adventurous eaters and their simple tastes were accommodated. Our server was extremely attentive and polite. We returned a week later before leaving New York because everything was so great and our server remembered us -which I think is quite something as they must see many new faces, being in Times Square area. We would not hesitate to return again on another trip to New York."

  • "I have frequented the Toalache on the UES for a few years now, but have never visited its midtown sister. Same fantastic food, better service in midtown, compared to my last UES visit. However, if you are looking for a place to dine and hear your companion(s) without straining, this may not be the place. At least not on a Saturday night at 9pm. The place was hopping, tables turning every few minutes until 11pm, which I believe is when they do their last seating. It may be a little calmer other nights, but I could hardly hear my guest, and I don't have any hearing issues normally. That said, the margaritas are always great, and i've never had a dish here I didn't end up loving."

  • "Was meeting old friends in NYC for a girls weekend and wanted a fun place with great food! After reading other reviews we chose this restaurant and we were not disappointed! Everyone loved their dishes, and the drinks were great. They had an amazing selection of tequilas, great margaritas and sangrias. Fast service, great food! Would definitely recommend to anyone!"
