A word from Toloache-Midtown
Welcome to Toloache (pronounced toh-lo-AH-tchay), chef-owner Julian Medina’s contemporary Mexican bistro located in the heart of the Theater District. Toloache is named after a flowering plant famed in Mexico for its use in love potions. We hope that when you dine with us you too will fall under the spell of chef Medina’s creative cooking, which incorporates seasonal and natural ingredients and more than a dozen types of chilies. Our festive, two-story space features a guacamole and ceviche bar, a wood-burning oven, and an exceptional tequila list, along with elegant decorative elements imported from Mexico. We looking forward to seeing you soon.

The ambiance was good, but the food was mediocre. The servers were romps and polite and helpful. We had a group of four persons, and each ordered a different entree. None of them, including two specials of the day, was very good. Only the guacamole and the complimentary appetizers were worth a repeat visit.

I love Toloache! Every time I come into the city for a show, I make sure to have luck at Toloache! If I'm coming with a different friend, I recommend Toloache and it never disappoints! The food is fabulous and just the perfect amount, I'm never so full that I'm miserable while sitting through the show! The combinations of favors and the visual presentation are perfect!

Five of us were meeting pre-theater hoping for an enjoyable meal. The noise level was so high no one could hear themselves think. It was also so hot in the restaurant, no one could even breath and nothing was done to make it more comfortable even after many requests. Nothing special about the food. Word to the wise... choose another dining venue.

Despite my open table reservation for 6:30 (with confirmation #) the hostesses could not find my reservation and ushered us to the very jammed bar to wait, where they assured us they would find us when a table opened up. Roughly an hour later we asked why we had still not been seated and they searched again for the reservation, only to find that indeed we were supposed to be seated at 6:30. Fortunately the food was good and our waiter was very knowledgeable and accommodating to our party's gluten-free and onion-free requests. The menu is marked with gluten-free and vegetarian symbols, which is also a help. Note that a basic margarita costs $15 and the food is pricey, too, but (sadly) it is still one of the better options in this area.

We loved this restaurant so much we had to go back a second time! The margaritas were amazing, guacamole was some of the best I've ever had and food was delicious. Others had commented on the guacamole being a small portion but we felt it was a very generous serving. The salsa has a smoky taste that was surprising at first but quickly became our new favorite. The service was amazing and very attentive. My friend didn't care for her chicken quesadilla (had a sweet taste that was unexpected). The server noticed she hadn't eaten much of it and asked if it was ok. She told her it was fine, just not to her liking. We fully expected to pay for the dish but they had taken it off our check. Very classy.

We had dinner at Toloache on a Sunday night. The place was very busy due to the proximity of Times Square. We had reservations so no problem getting a table. Having a love for Mexican food, I have to say this place did not disappoint. The quality and flavors were fantastic but I do think the portion sizes could be a little better especially for the price point. Our server, Alex, was outstanding! I would not hesitate to go back just to have those fish tacos!

We were in NY from Dallas with our granddaughter with tickets to see Cinderella. We chose this restaurant because of its proximity to the Broadway Theater and the good reviews. We arrived at 5:35 for a 5:45 reservation and were seated within minutes. The service was great and we were able to enjoy a wonderful leisurely early dinner. Their margarita's were excellent and we know margaritas. This was perfect for pre-theater, but I think it would be a great place to dine any time.

This was my second time dining at Toloache-Midtown. Our reservation was at 3:35 on a Friday. Early enough I thought that we would be able to relax and enjoy our food . But we felt very rushed, even though there were empty tables everywhere.the waitress kept asking us if there was anything else she could get us while I was still eating. I finally asked her for the desert menu so she would get the hint that we weren't going anywhere. I'm not sure if they want the young hip clientele to be seen there or they just want to turn the tables fast. I would still recommend this restaurant to a friend, and just tell them to take their time.

Went here for my first date, the ambiance was excellent as well as the service. We went upstairs where the tables had candles which was a nice touch. The only thing I would improve is the food and the tables, it wasn't bad but it was definitely expensive for a small portion of food and the tables were a bit small. Overall, I would definitely go again.

Positives - The food and service was great - really authentic and flavoursome! The frozen marguerites and mojitos! Negatives - the restaurant is quite small so you are very crammed in which can feel a little claustrophobic! The chips and guacamole to start with were overpriced, costing just as much as a main meal!! Make sure you book!

Visited this restaurant from an online recommendation from Neil Patrick Harris. Neil, I must disagree that this place has the best guacamole. We were seated right by the kitchen and the servers bumped into my friend on every pass. I know it's tight, but don't seat people and disregard that they are a paying customer. The guacamole, even though prepared fresh behind us, had no distinctive taste. The chips tasted like they came right out of a bag and were cold and stale. The drinks weren't much better. Margaritas tasted watery. Entrees were good, fish tacos crispy with good taste. Ordered Mexican coffee and had to ask for it again when our dessert was almost gone. I think I'll go elsewhere on my next visit.

Overall food was great - drinks were tastey. $14 for guac is a little high - but the other menu items were definitely worth it! Tacos were super delicious (just had the spare rib and pork belly) and so was the truffle "quesadilla" which was more of a round flatbread.

Theater district is not know for foodie options and the good Hell's Kitchen spots are usually small. So when I needed to find a place for a birthday dinner there for a family including gluten free, veggie and just picky, I was stressed. This was perfect - food was high quality, well thought and prepared but not precious. They had no problem adapting menu items and the waiter was friendly and funny in the face of our complex ordering. Was a bit loud and crowded and took a while to be seated despite reservations but I can roll with that if the rest of the experience is smooth and yummy.

My wife loves the food and margaritas at Toloache but I think we were both a little disappointed this trip by the crowding and the noise. We went pre-theater and we have gone before at less packed times. For pre-theater they have tables jammed together (you're 6 inches from another 2-top) and the noise level is really high. Food is delicious, drinks are pricey as I've said before, so if you want quick, really good Mexican food with no atmosphere, this is your place.

We found this spot nestled in Time Square amongst a lot of places that did not seem like they would provide the same amazing experience. This was our first dinner on our honeymoon and the dinner was so flavorful. The guacamole and hot salsa were extremely satisfying, the drinks were strong, and the dinner dishes were even more impressive. I had the Pollo Toloache and my wife had the Scallops with a Quinoz risotto. Both were fantastic dishes very full of flavor. The scallop was the most perfectly seared I had ever encountered. The servers were attentive and friendly. I would highly recommend this restaurant if you are on a date and want to impress someone with fine cuisine.

We went here late night after a show, and from the moment we walked in everything from the hostess showing us to our table to the waiter bringing us our check was spot on. The staff was extremely efficient and quick without being pushy at all. They were all very nice and helpful. We both got margaritas which were great. My girlfriend's got a quesadilla, and I got the pescado and brisket tacos. We split the avocado fries, which we had never seen before. Every single thing was amazingly fresh and delicious. We live in Baltimore but will definitely be back next time we make it up. Thanks for a perfect experience, Toloache!

Tacos (lobster and brisket) were light and full of flavor and the black beans and rice were as good as I have had in south Florida. You only get two small tacos so order some sides! We also ordered the chips/salsa and plantains- both were good but compared to the other food a little underwhelming. Ambience - very loud (but most restaurants in NYC are) and a little cramped. We sat upstairs- a bit of a steep climb for my aging relative. Great location though-right next to Gershiwen Theater. Overall, this restaurant deserves its stars!

We have been going to and enjoying Toloache for several years, but after this experience we shall think hard before returning. It might or might not be that Toloache has changed its table arrangement. However, even on a midweek evening the restaurant was so crowded and noisy that it was impossible to relax and enjoy our meal. The food was well prepared as always but it seems that portions were smaller and prices higher. It was amazing that the kitchen and waitstaff were able to keep the food coming at a fast clip in the midst of the chaos. When you feel relieved just to get out of the restaurant to the relative calm of the busy Manhattan streets you know you haven't had a satisfying experience. I guess this is the price of success.

From start to finish, delicious. Frozen mango margarita is brain freeze heaven. They use mango puree. Guac is well done. Trio is a great way to go but if you're appetite isn't that large, the fruit guac is a pleasant surprise. The brisket in the Suadero tacos was tender and flavorful. Suckling pig is ridiculously good. The skin was crisp and the meat fell apart, in a good way. Even my seemingly simple Toloache chicken breast was moist and layered with flavor. Although we were about to bust, we couldn't pass up the insane dessert offerings. Chocoflan, a hybrid of a firm, silky flan and a dense chocolate cake with caramel sauce and fresh strawberries and a warm fruit tart. Service is great. It's noisy and crowded but you don't feel rushed.

We eat in our local Mexican restaurant, Los Sarapes, (which is wonderful) frequently, and have been to Mexico numerous times and have eaten at some of the finest restaurants there. The food at Taloache was fine, nothing to rave about. The guacamole was almost tasteless, Paella with epazote flavored rice was good, black cod wasn't the greatest. The Sangrita was the best thing we ordered. I guess the prices reflect the proximity to the theatre district, over $300.00 for 4 people (we all shared the guacamole and one dessert). I don't think it was worth the price. The excellent service made up for the food, however.

Outstanding experience. From the hostess who had our reservation and actually read our note about have a 7pm show to the waiter who was quick and attentive but not overly so to even the other patrons who were friendly and happy to be eating the excellent food and drinking the amazing Margarita's at Toloache. The food is flavorful and a pleasure to eat. The drinks were excellent, I hate a watered down drink but these were obviously hand made, not from a mix margaritas, excellent tequila and knowledgeable staff. I would not hesitate to return. We were seated quickly, had a wonderful meal and drinks, and were out in time for our show. I will return.
