Welcome to Toloache (pronounced toh-lo-AH-tchay), chef-owner Julian Medina’s contemporary Mexican bistro located in the heart of the Theater District. Toloache is named after a flowering plant famed in Mexico for its use in love potions. We hope that when you dine with us you too will fall under the spell of chef Medina’s creative cooking, which incorporates seasonal and natural ingredients and more than a dozen types of chilies. Our festive, two-story space features a guacamole and ceviche bar, a wood-burning oven, and an exceptional tequila list, along with elegant decorative elements imported from Mexico.   • "The place is very loud. They obviously do their business in pre-theater dining. Our server was very nice and attentive, but they try to upsell you and rush you through from the first sentence. Sangria and margaritas were good. Tacos were tasty, but queso fundito with chorizo was bland. My entree, Lechon was fatty and not hot enough. It's accompanying corn pudding was good but the pickled vegetables were hot? and tasteless. My husbands Carne Asada was good but not great. His potatoes were terrible. I'd skip this one. "

  • "This is the scond time we have ate at Toloache when visiting NYC. This time we brought a friend who was married to a Mexican for a while and lived in Mexico. She gave the restaurant high praises for authenticity and kept saying the rest of of the day how great the meal was. We thoughly enjoy eating here. My only negative comment is that both times, once in summer and once it early spring, it is very warm in the restaurant. I would advise dressing light."

Our other couple got delayed by POTUS being in town but the hostess still sat us and was very understanding for it being a busy Friday night. We loved the dinner and will be back again."

  • "Since my friend and I had theater tickets for a Wednesday matinee, I needed a restaurant that served a nice lunch for a reasonable price. Let me start by saying, your taste buds will thank you. If you enjoy Mexican food, this is authentic upscale Mexican cuisine . Guacamole with pomegranate ? Crazy yes, but it works! I had the langosta (lobster) tacos, flavor unbelievable. My friend had the torta ahogada, which is a pork carnitas sandwich, really delish. A little red sangria to wash it all down, and churros to top it off for dessert. The broadway show was good, I think the lunch at Toloache was better."

On a recent evening there, pre-theater, the place was packed and lively--upstairs and down. The dessert wasn't very good (flan). Overall enjoyed this place very much.   • "Our family came across Toloache in a search to find a restaurant near the Gershwin Theatre. The reviews were fantastic and we now understand why. The food is creative and delicious. The margaritas were outstanding. There were plenty of options for me, being a vegetarian, and the other carnivores in my family. My kids (10 and 12) are not terribly adventurous eaters and their simple tastes were accommodated. Our server was extremely attentive and polite. We returned a week later before leaving New York because everything was so great and our server remembered us -which I think is quite something as they must see many new faces, being in Times Square area. We would not hesitate to return again on another trip to New York."

  • "I have frequented the Toalache on the UES for a few years now, but have never visited its midtown sister. Same fantastic food, better service in midtown, compared to my last UES visit. However, if you are looking for a place to dine and hear your companion(s) without straining, this may not be the place. At least not on a Saturday night at 9pm. The place was hopping, tables turning every few minutes until 11pm, which I believe is when they do their last seating. It may be a little calmer other nights, but I could hardly hear my guest, and I don't have any hearing issues normally. That said, the margaritas are always great, and i've never had a dish here I didn't end up loving."

  • "Having spent the better part of last year living in Chelsea and frequenting spots downtown, we were up in NY for a rainy weekend staying in mid-town and didn't feel like venturing south. We found this place on Yelp and after reading the reviews both on that site and Opentable, figured we'd try this spot even though it is in mid-town, home to many touristy restaurants. We are so glad we took a chance, this place has great energy and great food. The staff were pleasant, the ambience was fantastic, and the food was even better. Definitely would eat here again and recommend to friends staying in the area."

  • "Took my daughter and her 3 teenage friends here before a show. We arrived at 11:30 and the place was nearly empty. We received incredibly attentive service at the start. All of our menu questions were answered and one of two fellows who waited on us during the meal gave excellent recommendations. Everything we ordered was spectacular. We sat at a table near the stone oven and the girls enjoyed watching the guacamole chef create her magic at a station right in front of our table. We spent a leisurely 2 hours at the restaurant with appetizers, main, and dessert. The place filled up around 12 and then our service became a little slower. The atmosphere and food exceeded any expectations I had. Would love to return here!"

  • "Pros: decent guacamole, good avocado fries, good steak and eggs. Cons: tacos embarrassingly small and tasted of little other than spice (that is, not much beef flavor). Total ripoff for $17. Soup not flavorful and portion was meager. Emptied my soda halfway through but never offered a refill. For some reason they brought the sides with the first course so had no sides with our entrees. The mole enchilada was flavorless. Won't be back."
