A word from Toloache-Midtown
Welcome to Toloache (pronounced toh-lo-AH-tchay), chef-owner Julian Medina’s contemporary Mexican bistro located in the heart of the Theater District. Toloache is named after a flowering plant famed in Mexico for its use in love potions. We hope that when you dine with us you too will fall under the spell of chef Medina’s creative cooking, which incorporates seasonal and natural ingredients and more than a dozen types of chilies. Our festive, two-story space features a guacamole and ceviche bar, a wood-burning oven, and an exceptional tequila list, along with elegant decorative elements imported from Mexico. We looking forward to seeing you soon.Continued

  • "Food was great, service was excellent, margaritas amazing … but …. I booked through the "NYC restaurant week" and when I was there I found out my reservation was too early for dinner. Maybe I should have called and asked, but why would the "restaurant week" web page allow me to make a reservation out of time ?"

  • "Our family dined here for lunch before a matinee and had a very good experience. Nice atmosphere, friendly service and great food...perhaps the best guacamole I've had. Good drinks and reasonable prices. What's not to love? It's my new favorite pre-theatre dining restaurant."

  • "I have been here twice now and have enjoyed everything I have eaten or drank here. I would recommend this place to friends/family. The tables are a bit tight and on top of one another, but the service is excellent. Attentive without being all over you. Tasty, if a bit pricey, drinks and decent portions of food for the price. The grasshopper tacos are amazing! Order them- don’t be afraid- and take bite, don’t study them. It is worth the initial gross out reaction when you taste them! The paella is very good as is the goat’s milk caramel crepe cake. So delicious! Beautifully decorated with mosaic tiles and huge hanging filigree lanterns. Nice for a date or ladies lunch; noise level is not so loud you can’t have a conversation."

  • "Upscale Mexican cuisine. The guacamole was very good, but had to ask for salt. The salsa was unique, different, and very flavorful. My wife thoroughly enjoyed the suckling pig carnitas, although it was not in the traditional style of slow-cooked (yes) and deep fried (no). I had the short rib which was also excellent. As is true for many NYC restaurants, the tables were tightly packed but not unduly uncomfortable."

  • "I enjoyed going there for restaurant week. I have been a few times before that and enjoyed the food. Will keep coming back."

  • "Initial service was a bit brusk & rushed, but calmed down when we ordered. The food was quite good. We were surprised that nacho chips were an additional cost at a Mexican restaurant; they usually come with the meal. The margaritas, even with top shelf tequila, were miniscule. Final verdict, good food but over priced and loud."

  • "$13 for a quesadilla that was literally 4 inches wide. Food was tasty, but the bill for two that left us starving was insane. I've lived in the city for 20 years... There's better value and mexican elsewhere."

  • "I booked this restaurant based on Tripadvisor reviews and it's location close to our East 50th St hotel. It's a really busy spot which is a good sign. The food and atmosphere were great and this was Mexican food that is not your average Mexican fare. The service was great and we booked while leaving for another meal two nights later. A great spot and our best meals on our five day trip to NYC."

  • "Tried to get into Toloache without a reservation and came away disappointed, so returned three evenings later for a pre-theater meal. Our waiter was friendly, helpful and advised us on the menu and drink options. Loved the guacamole! Next time we'd try the trio. We are tapas-style rather than ordering main courses, and enjoyed everything we tried. The service was wonderful throughout. We would not hesitate to return to Toloache."

  • "Sat next to a corner bus service station so right off the bat people were bringing dirty dishes by us. They tried to cover it up with a curtain but the traffic was annoying. Average food. Chips were tasteless and quesadilla was absolutely the tiniest I have ever seen. Waitress spent most of her night with talking to an important person next to us who seemed to get better service. Charged for five Cokes when we ordered four."

  • "This was decent food, but very touristy. The service is pushy and can be rude. They literally force you out of your chair after 45 minutes during prime times."

  • "Great food and drinks, and terrific prices for the area.... Only drawback is noise level"

  • "Toloache is a way-above-average Mexican restaurant. The pollo enchiladas were the best I've ever had, not at all like typical Tex-Mex offerings. The spicy ceviche was also wonderful. Service is prompt and polite. This is a great pre-theater spot. But it's really noisy."

  • "Our party of 3 had the original Guacamole with homemade tortillas, two chicken tacos, chicken enchiladas with rice and black beans and the grilled chicken. All meals were full of flavor and fresh. Very tasty! We finished off with the churros with chocolate and caramel sauces. Wow! Service was on point and pleasant. No complaints. Washrooms are a little tight (only one per floor), but other than that, would go back in a heartbeat! Thank you for the wonderful food and a great evening."

  • "Not your usual Mexican - Creative dishes made with fresh ingredients, reasonably priced for the quality. A bit noisy, but fun atmosphere."

  • "We dined at the west side restaurant pre theater. With that said, our service was good as was the guacamole ( although the portion was small and had to order another), the margaritas were filled with too much ice (no liquor), the two shrimp dishes came with over cooked, hard shrimps, the dinner was rushed and the noise level so high we had to scream to speak to each other. Going back to the east side."

  • "We loved the food, and the presentation. All was wonderful, including service. Timing to get us to the theatre in time: perfect."

  • "Guacamole was OK. Have had much better. Service was brusque....had to catch my wine glass from being cleared because there was still some left in it. Cleared my plate before I put my knife down. Waiter didn't seem to know much about specifics of the menu. Very noisy."

  • "This restaurant is always excellent! The guacamole options are endless and the entrees are always have an awesome presentation."

  • "We came on a crowded night with a private party upstairs. The only other seating was either near them or downstairs, both of which were freezing cold from the air conditioning down. The hostess was extremely accomodating and understanding and turned down the a/c so that we were comfortable. So glad we stayed-the food was fabulous as always!"

  • "Visited from Toronto this past weekend, and Toloache was recommended to me by sister as a must try. We ordered the guacamole, the octopus ceviche, the lobster tacos and short rib and bone marrow tacos. For dessert we had the churros. Everything lived up to expectations, and we would definitely go back the next time we come to NYC."

  • "Get the medium guac and the churros. Can't go wrong with any of the entrees. I normally get their chicken tacos. If you love Mexican food you will love toloache!"

  • "we went there before a play and were pleasantly surprised. most resturants in Broadway are overpriced and not good. this was a little pricy for lunch but was quite good. the menu was very innovative. the salsa is sexcellent."

  • "My fiance, and I have been here twice. The food, the service and the entire dining experience, was great. I have traveled over 40 years and have to say that Taloache has found its self in my top all time 5 best places for dinner. Will be back many more times."

  • "We found this during intermission at a show and booked it thru OT because of reviews. What a great find, old world service and delicious food. Josephat the manager even stopped by the table to make sure everything was good. They truly care about customers."

  • "Great location if you were going to go to a broadway way show afterwards. Guacamole was great, but some of the other food was ok. I have had better Mexican food before, but the cocktails were amazing!!!!!"

  • "We arrived on time for our 5:30 dinner reservation and were seated immediately in a packed house - they asked about our show time upon arrival. Our waitress, Maria, was terrific, giving very good descriptions of drinks and food, along with a recommendation based on our preferences. All were spot on. In choosing between a shrimp appetizer on the regular menu and the special, she recommended the special, and said why - I eat plenty of shrimp and the half dozen topping the polenta was just the best! Since we had appetizers I had the tacos (it is stated that the tacos are appetizer size). So you are not surprised, the tacos are about 4" in diameter, but along with apps I found it JUST the right amount of food. Dessert- perfect."

  • "The short rib and marrow taco was insanely good: cut that richness with the acidity of margarita made with fresh clementine juice and the combination was fantastic. We had the trio of guacamole. Our favorite was the spicy version but we really loved the addition of small pieces of pineapple in the fruit version. It doesn't sound like it would work but it was really great. The shrimp quesadilla had a citrus slaw that was the perfect foil to the cheese and shrimp. My sister and I wanted to eat and chat at our own pace and our waitress was perfectly in tune with that. We were there for two hours and never felt rushed tough the restaurant was packed. Great meal. Great cocktails. Highly recommended. We loved the drinks and the food!"

  • "I was looking for a restaurant in the Times Square area so that it would be easy to get to a show. This place is amazing, the food is excellent. we had the spicy guacamole...awesome and then we ordered 3 different tacos and shared....all were so yummy. We also had the flan and churos for dessert. One of us has celiac disease, the waiter was very knowledgable about what was gluten free... My new place when in NYC!!!!!!!!!!!"

  • "The selections were great. The guacamole is made from scratch and tasty. Highly recommend the carne asada."

  • "Each dish we ordered was really delicious and clearly made with very fresh ingredients. Additionally, the menu is full of really interesting dishes that aren't typically found on the average Mexican food menu. And despite how busy and full the restaurant was (on a Monday night!), the service was terrific - we never had to wait for anything but we never felt rushed."
