A word from Tokyo Cafe
Casual dining. Serious food.

Some call us the local “Cheers”, to some it’s “Tokyo”, and to a number of the locals, it’s simply “Sushi” (no other explanation needed, Tokyo Café is understood). Regardless of what you call us, it’s a place you can count on for Japanese comfort food.

Since opening at the end of 1997, Tokyo Café has been a staple to the surrounding neighborhoods and families in the Fort Worth area. It"s a place where people run into friends and family. There's something on the menu for anyone so come join us for lunch or dinner and see who you might run in to.

Tokyo Cafe was selected by the readers of Fort Worth, TX Magazine as the 2008 & 2009's Best Japanese restaurant.

Location was very basic but the food was very good. While dinning the chef was outside in the garden cutting fresh vegetables for the evening. FRESH!!! Our waitress was very attentive and quick to get us everything we needed for a enjoyable dinner.

Normally with sushi I get sashimi or nigiri since I'm not a cucumber or avocado fan, but decided to go for some rolls this time. I wasn't disappointed the Tokyo roll was so good.

A friend and I went for my birthday lunch and it was absolutely amazing as usual! We had the tempura brussel sprouts which were definitely crave-able, the blackened white tuna (an old fave) and 2 rolls including the New York Sunrise which was just the right amount of spicy. I think Tokyo has the freshest fish, and their sushi chefs really know what they are doing when it comes to preparing the fish and creating new & different rolls.

  • Expensive Happy Hour

    Dined on 7/17/2013
We purposely went for happy hour to reduce costs. They offer the "white surprise" & the "red surprise" wines. It's the house wine but you do not know ahead of time what you are getting. My husband & I received different white wines---a chardonnay & a sauvignon blanc. I do not like sauvignon blanc so he drank it & I consumed the chardonnay. They have the maki sushi at a reduced price of $1 or $2 per piece. We ordered 2 servings of 6 different kinds & only received 5 which the server did not notice until we pointed it out on the check. He promptly took care of it but at a total cost of $70 (including tip) we came away feeling that it was too expensive & that we could've eaten more. All in all, the sushi was fresh & good.

Freshest and most consistent high quality sushi in Fort Worth. TCU and Tejas rolls along with Tok fries and the avo bake are all not to be missed. If feeling more adventurous try the excellent crispy fish collar then have chef hard fry the boney bits into chips with a savory Asian dip. The sushi happy hour daily 4-6 is a fantastic way to try new things. My fav - baby yellowtail - clean flavor with dense almost crunchy meat phenomenal!

Tuna tower ROCKED. Stuffed avocado just ok. Pork belly good but mine seemed left over from previous dinner service. We ate lunch here. Ambiance so so due to building and location, but don't let it fool you. Will definitely go back. Lunch bento was very standard but not elevated. There is potential for this place to explode to culinary genius with the right ideas of innovation and elevation of flavor profiles. I hope owners read these reviews.

Quite simply put, there isn't a review out there that can do this wonderfully simplistic restaurant justice. As is always the case, we had an exceptional experience. My girlfriend and I have had the pleasure of dining here more times than I can count (at least on my fingers and toes), and our usual order rarely deviates. To start, try the pork belly and tuna tower, both are excellent and full of flavor. For non-sushi fans, you can never go wrong with the chicken teriyaki or pork katsu bowls, and the fish n' chips is also not to miss. However, most venture here for the sushi, and my advice is as follows: lobster roll, beef takaki roll, pretty woman roll, blackened white tuna nigiri, and sea bream nigiri. Take my advice, and thank the chefs!

Veggie tempura was delicious! Onions were thick slices which is different from the typical rings. The rolls were excellent!! Love their sauces. Try the roll that comes with four sauces. The sauces are amazing! The only negative thing I can say that is it's really loud in there. I guess because of the small space. It's worth a visit! And it's reasonably priced!

Happy hour is a great bargain if you like sashimi, like I do. But you have to get there before 6 p.m. Their fried dumpling appetizer is delicious! And their $5 a glass of "whatever is open" red & white wines was a pleasant surprise---and fun to get to see what each one of us got.

  • Fried Calamari was a Miss
    mimito4
    Dined on 9/8/2011
We are frequent customers of Tokyo Cafe & enjoyed it, as usual. They have added some new items to their menu. One of these, the fried calamari, we couldn't resist ordering. We are calamari connoisseurs & looked forward to sampling their version. We were initially disappointed as the calamari which was served was very tough. We complained & they cheerfully brought us another plate. This one was much better but far from excellent. We cannot recommend the calamari at this time. We also ordered the house chardonnay & were dismayed to find that it cost $9 a glass. Usually the house wines are somewhat cheaper than others, ranging from $4-$6 a glass. We will not be ordering the house wine again. But we will return for the great sushi.

We have been going here for years and it never disappoints. Roll do not have that heavy mayo taste you will find at other sushi joints and are tightly wrapped so that you can get the food to your mouth without coming undone. Even the worst chopstick user could eat here like a pro. The Camp Bowie roll is our favorite for those who like a spicy roll. Great variety and will continue to come back.

This is by far my favorite sushi place. The handwork on the sushi and rolls is impecable. Amazing and unique flavor combinations. Service can be a little spotty but never bad, and it is a young crowd, HS and college, young familys with babies, none of which keeps me from going, it just looses the romace its more upbeat and fresh.

Tokyo Cafe has been in FW for as long as I can remember (although I'm only 27) but it's a good standby for easy Japanese food. Their sashimi menu was a little limited, which was unfortunate, but the food was good and so was the service. The ambiance is casual, and if you're in the mood to go out and get Japanese but not pay a pretty penny, go here.

My husband & I sat at the sushi-prep bar for supper. It was a delight to watch the sushi chefs skillfully & artistically prepare the sushi & sashimi plates. It was even more fun to talk with the chefs about their backgrounds, experiences & their favorite rolls. Several chefs had their own creations featured on the menu which they were understandably proud of. All in all it was a great dinner & a fun evening.

From the outside, you'd never know that a food gem awaits within the walls of the Tokyo Cafe. However, this is one place that I hope to return to again and again. Try the five or the seven-course selections. Perfect for sharing, these options allow one to try Chef Kevin's culinary talents on many levels. Food is timely, original, beautifully presented, and fit for a food critic. What's further, every staff member I encountered was genuinely friendly, and the atmosphere was relaxed yet date-worthy. This restaurant is DFW find.
