Diner Reviews
  • "My husband took me to Tocqueville for my birthday dinner and it was exceptional! We noticed the nice ambiance and the warm yet respectful staff right as we walked in. Our waiter was attentive of our dining process, yet remained at a comfortable distance. We started with a glass of sparkling wine each and proceeded to red wines to pair with our entrees. The wine list was comprehensive and well-chosen. I was surprised to see that they serve Tokaji after dinner, and was definitely impressed by the quality of the selection. We are in our early twenties and for us, dining at a high-end restaurant is not an everyday event, and I was really happy that we chose Tocqueville."

  • "We were really disappointed in the food. It just was not interesting from the amuse bouche to the dessert."

  • "Although the classic decoration, it's a modern restaurant with a delicate service. I had the Apple Soup and the gnocchi, everything delicate and delicious. Don't miss it of your are arround Union Square."

  • "You must try the California sea urchin and angel hair carbonara. It is divine, one of the highlights of a great menu. Attentive service. Quiet atmosphere great for conversation."

  • "As recommended, the prix fix lunch was a beauty. Impeccably foamed free apple and celery root soup in a egg-drop bowl and hake as tender as I've ever had it. Service was sparingly done with both love and experience. Fabulous afternoon where we felt like we were not only not in NYC, we were in another world."

  • "We used to love Tocqueville, but the main course food on the special menu this time was disappointing. Hake is not our favorite fish - in fact we don't like it, and the gnocchi were heavy and pasty. The ambience is great, the noise level perfect at lunchtime and the service excellent."

  • "You won't be better treated anywhere. It seems to be a point of love and honor with the staff. The food is often exquisite. I had a lovely crisp-skinned moist-centered lake trout. The chef sent us some delicate beet chip shelled cannolis with mascarpone filling as an extra appetizer, in addition to the amuse bouche mushroom flan. The chestnut napoleon with brandy sorbet was a lovely lift of a dessert. I tasted my companion's scallops with foie gras, a signature disk here, always a treat. The sommelier is a teacher in his field, with a passion for his subject."

  • "We went on Saturday to celebrate my birthday at Tocqueville and as always the experience was fantastic. The staff as always were very warm and friendly and the service was impeccable. The food created by Chef Jason was delicious. We had a risotto and a duck breast that was excellent. Their wine list was impressive and we had a great white wine which Roger with his knowledge made it very interesting. Miguel as usual was very warm and friendly. At the end of the meal, the best was waiting for me when Chef Jason send me a Birthday cake ( chocolate with raspberry). It was so, so good!! And what a thoughtful, beautiful surprise it was! Definitely this is our favorite place ."

  • "This is a very special restaurant, a great room, really good food. It’s entirely possible to enjoy great service here. Melissa, the captain, was serving several tables near mine. She was attentive, personable and careful. She made sure everyone had what they ordered, passionately explained what was being served and made her guests feel welcome. Alas, we weren’t at one of those tables. Our waiter (his name was Daniel, but we only know this because it was written on the check, not because he bothered to interact much with us) disappeared regularly. His busmen often served the food (to the wrong people at the table) often slamming it down, without any explanation and then walking away. Service is part of the deal, and takes effort."

  • "This is a superb restaurant. It is ver attractive in the ver high ceilinged main dining room. There is also a balcony seating area Which I can't speak to. The food is varied and imaginative. I had scallops and foie gras in a dark sauce with wild mushrooms and my wife, who always orders duck said the smoked breast was about the best she ever ate. The ambience is elegant and QUIET. The service is attentive and welcoming. The wine choices include excellent wines that are affordable. It is expensive but for that special occasion or just because you feel like a treat you should go."

  • "The food and decor are reminiscent of a generic French restaurant on the upper east side in the 1990s. For the price, we were hoping for more creativity from the chef. While the food was very fresh tasting, the combination of flavors in each dish didn't build upon each other. The service was good, but it feels like the restaurant needs to be reinvented."

  • "We had such high hopes when we walked into this restaurant. It is beautful, the bar was lovely, it was just as we had hoped for a quiet dinner with my parents. The wait staff was trained well, and very appropriate..however, something must have been going on in the kitchen! We were left to linger over our cocktails...fine enough. We ordered our dinner, and then the interminable wait began. I should say we dined VERY early...6:30, and there were only 2 other small tables there when we arrived. It took over an hour to get our appetizers . We were ravenous, had a couple of cocktails each (while waiting!!!!) and needed food. Dinner also took too long, but by then we couldn't be objective. Gorgeous place, but would hesitate to return."

  • "This was my third visit to Tocqueville & the food was as a consistently good as the previous visits. We had the Chef's tasting menu, which is a favorite. Especially love the grits w/ truffle & sunny side egg, rich but with a light hand. The wine selections were perfectly matched to each course. Service was attentive but not overbearing. We look forward to our next visit."

  • "My husband and I are leaving Manhattan and wanted to have a "last hurrah". We decided to go to Tocqueville...and what a wonderful decision. We have lived in NYC for 20 years and this was definitely the best dining experience we have had. From the gracious greeting to the MaitreD to the serving staff there was not a misstep. Food was delicious, prepared beautifully and presented courteously. This is an upscale restaurant so it could be considered "pricey"...however, if you are looking for an exceptional dining experience this is it. When we come back to visit NYC, I will definitely return to Tocqueville."

  • "Arrive for dinner. Seated after five minutes. Order food and wine ten minutes later. Wait one hour for amuse-bouche. Have amuse-bouche pulled out from under us to give us our appetizers. (Overly buttery angel hair pasta with carbonara, nice but uninspired hamachi sashimi). Wait one hour for main course. One main course (steak and oxtail) is cold. Server comps us this main course. Other main course (scallops with foie gras) was an interesting combination, but the scallops were overwhelmed by the sauce. Cut our losses and skip dessert."

  • "Uni Vermicelli appetizer is a world class dish and worth a trip from anywhere to experience. Vermicelli in cream sauce flavored with Uni along with some of the plain roe/uni sushi on top. Perfect essence of the sea. Halibut and the Scallops with Foie Gras were exceptional mains as was the octopus appetizer. Exceptional quality of food and great dining experience were despite the poor start: despite several open tables, we had to "wait while they prepared our table" for 15 minutes at the empty bar while we stared at the empty tables - it was a slow, cold, mid-week night - no need for pretentions. But, the food experience overcame all of that."

  • "Food is truly marvelous. We had chef's tasting with wine pairing and a vegetarian chef's tasting . Each course was marvelous. All the little compliments of the chef were lovely. The service, as always, was perfect. Friendly, knowledgeable, warm. Feels European. Also, the decor is elegant and soothing. Blessedly free from tile and clattering. So you actually hear and enjoy each so other's company. Perfect food, perfect service, perfect ambience. A real pleasure, consistently."

  • "From beginning to end, and exceptional meal. We found our service to be as good as it gets--and wish to cite our server, Melissa, as one of the reasons. Wonderful job!! Food, timing, and ambience all first class. I will definitely return."

  • "The cocktails are great. The virgin drinks are even better. The bartender can make a drink by asking if you like citrus or not. The food is very rich. The service is excellent. One of our party was late over an hour and the waitress was super accommodating."

  • "We were satisfied by this restaurant but it was a little bit expensive for a non-star restaurant and even if the atmosphere goes to be romantic there is always loudy. The wine is good but it is also expensive it could deserve to have wine more affordable. Otherwise the food was very good i took the lobster and it was very nice and tasteful !"

  • "Great service, finally a quiet and civilized place! The food, however, except for the fabulous foie gras terrine was uneventfull at best. The cheese course was disappointing. I'd like a fuller portion of better cheese, it also needs to be at room temperature, and a bit less sweet stuff with it. I'd rather get one tiny little petit four when ordering tea or coffee. Will give it another try because of the service and of the foie gras terrine."

  • "My friend took me for a belated birthday lunch to Tocqueville. We had the prefixed, 3 course $29.00. I had the celery and apple soup and my friend had the beet salad which were delicious. We both had the Hake as our main course, which was fabulous. We ended with one trio of sorbets and one dark chocolate bon bon, which was ethereal. The atmosphere and service was perfect."

  • "This is one of the best restaurants in New York. The ambiance is elegant and comfortable. The tables are set apart and dinner conversation is possible. The food is always excellent. It is hard to pick out one dish. I had the duck and it was perfect. The wine is excellent. We had a Slovania red that was a hit with our guest. I have regularly tried new suggested wines and have not been disappointed. The service is usually top notch but last night the wait staff was attentive but confused when serving our dinner. We had to switch dishes after being served. Not a big problem but when you have guests and want a special night this was a small disappointment. Still a very special night."
