My wife took me there for my birthday, and it was a truly exceptional evening. Great food, impeccable and attentive service (not overbearing), in a beautiful room. Tables are nicely spaced, so you can have a conversation without shouting. And the bartender makes the best Manhattan in the city!

Tocqueville continues to be a mysteriously undiscovered gem- I've been dining there for years and am always suprised by how empty and quiet the dining room is. The food is predictably delicious and the atmosphere hushed and elegant...maybe too hushed? Not sure. The only negative comment I could make is the service: attentive but cold; bored seemingly almost to the point of being forced and condescending. But, again, this is the only unpleasant part of an otherwise really nice dinner.

Our 3-hour Easter lunch was terrific! The tiny halibut amuse bouche was a perfect start! We loved the salad with poached pear fennel and and the Colorado rack of lamb was delicious. The cauliflower soup was too salty for me. The dessert of five sorbets was fabulous and others seemed to like their apple tart and chocolate desserts.

A lovely, civilized experience. Gorgeous lighting beautiful decor. The maitre d' was very attentive and elaborated mostly helpfully on the courses, without trying too hard. He also made excellent wine and after dinner drink suggestions. We were one of the last parties on what was undoubtedly a long day (Easter) and the service never flagged. Recommend very highly.
