The menu also features a selection of pizzas and sandwiches and is diverse enough to please every diner, and it includes a wine-pairing suggestion for each dish. Diner Reviews
  • "We had a great meal here with a friend from out of town. We were hoping to impress her with all the changes our beloved city has made. Unfortunately we looked second-rate when the kitchen "lost" our order between the first course and entree, leading us to have a very long wait for our dinner plates. On the "plus" side, the food was delicious."

  • "The Hot Chicken is one of the best dishes I have had in Pittsburgh in quite awhile. The shrimp and grits wee excellent. Good evening."

  • "The food, drink and ambiance were great, however, the service was less than desirable. I'm not sure why it's called a wine bar because there was nothing special or extensive about the wine list - all wines that you could get in the local state store. The small plates were good but kind of overpriced - the flatbreads were delicious though."

  • "The lamb meatballs are amazing and every wine pairing was perfect. We all ordered different entrees and each of us was not disappointed. Will definitely eat here again when we are in Pittsburgh."

  • "I was in a party of 5 people this past Friday night who are very hard to organize together and we were served by Heather, who made all of us very uncomfortable and unwelcome from the start. Telling a guest to not order a lamb dish, pressuring to know when people will come, attitude, etc and if it wasn't for the planning to get everyone together, I would've left the restaurant then and there without paying a cent. I don't know how long Heather (left eyebrow pierced, thin figure, jaw length fine brown hair) has worked in the restaurant business or any job for that matter, but she needs serious customer service training and skills. And I have seen her name on a bad review on Google review - it's not just me. Toast lost my business for good."

  • "Everything about our experience was just ok. We had a great table. The service was serviceable (no pun intended), the wine was very good, the salads were very good, the entrees were adequate. The place looked a little "down at heel", and it didn't appear that anyone was making the extra effort. There are so many other places to try, we won't be rushing back here."

  • "Both couples love good wine and food, and when we find a place that is also comfortable and welcoming, it becomes a favorite go-to destination. We had a simple meal - salads to start, fish, scallops, steak for entrees, and homemade chocolate pudding for dessert. All good - made with excellent ingredients and served graciously. The table was ready when promised, and the bill was not bad, either!"

  • "I found that Toast was a Diner's Choice Winner and the menu on the website looked really interesting. The night we went the restaurant was pairing Burgers and Bourbon. One of our party had this and said it was wonderful. Another person who never finishes her meal had the Scottish Salmon and the plate was clean! I had the Hanger Steak which was done perfectly. The only disappointment was the Creme Brulee and it is probably because we didn't read the description carefully. It is made with Bourbon so it has a very different taste. I wasn't what we expected and we didn't finish it. Our original first instinct was Fried Dough and we probably should have gone with our first choice."

  • "My friends and I wanted to do a double date for the Thursday Burger/Beer/Bourbon night. For $12, you get a decent burger [or veggie burger], homemade BBQ chips, Duquesne pilsner/Brown Dog Ale (more on this later), and a shot of Rebel Yell. It's not worth upgrading the burger, as each topping is $2 extra, but the $2.50 beer upgrade is totally worth it (any draft, we did the Founders Imperial Stout). You can also upgrade the bourbon, but none of the 3 cocktail upgrades were up my alley. The service was decent, but the server forgot to bring out our complimentary bread and at times would disappear, but the restaurant was decently busy that we understood how it can be some nights. I'm glad we made a reservation. Would definitely go back."

  • "Our party of 7 all enjoyed the atmosphere of Toast. The Lobster Mac and Cheese was wonderful as was the asparagus salad. Everyone was quite pleased with their wine choices. There is something for everyone on the menu from adventurous foodies to more conventional eaters. I look forward to returning to try other dishes."

  • "First, it took nearly a half-hour to get drinks after we first arrived. Our waiter was very apologetic, it certainly was not his fault, and told us that there was a new bartender - too bad she had to start on a Saturday night. Secondly, the food tasted good, unfortunately it was just a little warm. Almost like it had been microwaved on low but not warmed the whole way through. We won't be going back."

  • "Food was very good - esp shrimp and grits. Good place to go if you actually want to have a conversation while you enjoy your meal, noise level is very low and NO TV!!"

  • "The server acted as if he were being put out by having to wait on our table. It took him 5-10 minutes to even address the table, he forgot to give us a bread basket, and then did not give change on a cash payment and assumed the rest was his to keep! The food was not good enough to overcome such poor service. I do not plan on returning to this restaurant anytime soon."

  • "We decided to eat at the bar although there were a couple of available tables downstairs. There is also an upstairs dining room. Mussels were great as was the chicken entrée...and, the "surprise" wine. Enjoyed the atmosphere on a cold night and the convenience to Shadyside."

  • "The restaurant reminded us of small European restaurants we've been to for ambience, including the small spaces and tight tables. The design was great and the service very good. I would give the food an A for presentation, but in the end was not wowed (until the check arrived), and actually a bit disappointed with the starter and dessert. The wine selection was great, and overall a very enjoyable dinner so would give this place great marks, but perhaps not tops for dining. Nice place to kick back and sip a glass of wine though."

  • "The answer to everything was No. No, you can't come a few minutes late (because my flight was delayed due to weather) , No you cannot substitute roasted potatoes for mashed potatoes (even if their on the menu) . No,No,No, (without even asking the chef or owner) . Not friendly service."

  • "We went for the first time on Valentines Day! The food was outstanding with lovely wine pairings. Our waiter was able to give us great suggestions. I had the tasting menu & my husband had the filet. Our meals were prepared perfectly. The ambiences is super small and cute, which I like. We did have to wait for a table for about 20 minutes even though we had a reservation, but maybe this was because it was Valentines Day. We will definitely return - so excited to have found this unique spot so close to us!"

  • "We had dinner at Toast last Friday evening and I was not disappointed! The ambiance was unique, the wine flight was great to try different varieties and the food was high quality. The wine pours are extremely generous here. You could tell the food was homemade. I liked that we could talk to each other and not have to shout. We will definitely go back!!"

  • "Great wine and fair prices. Food paired with it is very odd. Mac and cheese with a fried egg? Breaded scallops in a pilaf bowl? Cheese was way over priced from the portion they gave but very tasty. Great staff, very good knowledge on wine. Good place for wine drinkers. Not so great if you're hungry."

  • "The food was hugely disappoining, tasteless and totally forgettable. While portion size is not material, the cheese plate was pitiful. Better to spnd your money somewhere else."

  • "My husband and I go to Toast every year for our anniversary. It is a wonderful place with delicious food and wine. We really enjoy the wine pairings with each course. Desserts are also delicious! This year, they gave us a celebratory glass of champagne after we were seated. This made the experience more special. We love Toast and will return again on our next anniversary or hopefully sooner!!"

  • "I LOVE that Toast provides 2, 4, and 8 oz wine pour (all at the same relative price to a full glass). My wife and I each enjoyed 3, 2 oz pours and the chef's tasting menu. Wonderful restaurant."

  • "We went to dinner with friends who rave about this place but did not have a good experience. Our table upstairs had a big screen TV hanging over our head and little to no atmosphere. Our food was nothing special and service was slow. For the price we would have had a phenomenal meal at Soba! We will not return."

  • "we ordered risotto with fish and meat. our only suggestion if to work on the cookign of the rice. havign been born and raised in italy, we are used to a certian consistence what it comes to risotto. this was a little too hard. not al dente, just hard. otherwise the fish was delicious and so was the meat."

  • "With friends in from out of town, we were considering several places to have dinner on a Monday night and settled on Toast, since none of us had ever been there. What a great choice - Monday is $5 Mystery wine night - which was great fun and allowed us to try several wines (great wines for really great price!. The food was excellent - we all enjoyed our meals and shared appetizers and the service was perfect - we never felt rushed, liked that we had ample time to enjoy our first course and then all was served, hot and perfectly prepared. Can't wait to return"

  • "I dined at a different restaurant for six days straight to experience the offerings for Restaurant Week. I had amazing food and enjoyed the experiences at all of the restaurants, but my top pick for the week was Toast! Everything was perfect from the paired wines to the ambiance, waitstaff, and excellent lamb (lamb bacon was the best!). The bread was awesome. What disappointed me the most, though, was that my date clearly got bigger portions. It made me wonder if he was made happier since he was likely paying the bill? Maybe I was going to pay? Also, just because I'm a thin female doesn't mean I have any less of an appetite. The portions could've been a tad bigger, but my date might not have had the same complaint."

  • "A friend and I visited Toast for a late dinner and happy hour. We made reservations, and were seated immediately. As it was already 9pm, and a little late for normal time, we were both rather hungry. However, after we were seated, we were not acknowledged for about 10 minutes. Since it's such a small place, and other tables seemed to be getting service, this dismayed us a bit. Eventually, our waiter did show up, but only to place 2 wine glasses on our table and ask if we had any questions. He took our drink order and, after dropping off our drinks, he left without taking our food order. All in all, it was almost 30 minutes before we even put in our food order. For such a small place that was busy but not excessive, this was disappointing."

  • "Went for 2014 Rest. week special. Unusual menu with kidney as one part of the prix fixe. Really dislike kidney. They made it taste pretty good, and the rest was excellent. Wine pairing also unusual, and as usually occurs at Toast, perfect combinations."

  • "Such a great place to go whether on a date or out with friends. Great menu, great service and great bartenders. Whether you're there for the Thursday night $12 Burger/Beer/Bourbon or want to get a little risky and try the antelope, you will not be disappointed in Toast."

  • "Toast was the perfect combination of Food and Service. We were stunned by how many staff members(7!) tended to our table, and all with a smile. The service was impeccable. The food, too, was excellent. Toast is creative both with their ingredients and preparation. It's clear they enjoy what they do. That joy comes across in their flavors. I can't wait to come back."

  • "Toast's atmosphere and service are second to none. The staff are knowledgable, polite and extremely attentive to the wishes of diners. That alone should bring you through the doors, however the food and wine selection are what elevate Toast to one of the best restaurants in Pittsburgh. The menu is full of fresh, creative dishes that have been expertly paired with a perfect wine for the occasion. Toast is an absolute must for everyone and anyone."

  • "We had an early dinner here on New Years' eve and enjoyed it very much. The fireplace cast a warm glow on our table and the room was quiet- a nice change from many restaurants where it's hard to have good conversation. The menu is varied and had good vegetarian options as well as interesting choices for foodies, delicious as well."
