Toast! is welcoming and has an understated look. Open for Lunch and dinner, the bar is a great spot for conversation. Appetizers include the very popular shrimp and grits; entrées span from roasted chicken to braised tofu to antelope. The menu also features a selection of pizzas and sandwiches and is diverse enough to please every diner, and it includes a wine-pairing suggestion for each dish. In addition, all Champagnes and wines are available in 2-ounce, 4-ounce and 8-ounce pours, allowing you to taste as many as you wish.Continued

  • "Unique menu with many tasty options. Everything we tried was delicious!"

  • "Tried Toast for the first time for dinner with my sister. We asked about wine flights which are not pre-paired but they sell 2 oz glasses for build your own tastings. The server was great about describing/suggesting wines and I was pleased with my choices based on his descriptions. The cheese board also went nicely with a variety of the wines. I ordered the hanger steak which was cooked to perfection (medium). The grits that came with it were nothing to write home about but the asparagus and green beans were great. For dessert I ordered the chocolate pot de creme which was coffee/chocolate pudding that wasn't super special but hit the spot. My sister got the vanilla creme brûlée which was awesome! Great overall experience!"

  • "Never visited Toast before. Had a Groupon for a Benjamin Burger & a small plate; we chose the shrimp and grits. Burger was succulent and perfectly prepared, served hot and tasty. Shrimp and grits were flavorful and rapidly served. Service was efficient and cheerful. Will definitely return...."

  • "Hamburgers were some of the best we ever had. Service was very friendly. Give this place a try."

  • "This was our third dinner at Toast and our last. Our server (attractive thin young woman with chin length brown hair) was the rudest server we have ever encountered. Her demeanor was very unpleasant and when we didn't order immediately (we were waiting for her to chill our bottle of wine; not our request, but she offered) she became hostile. Very unfortunate since our prior visits were relaxing. She also charged us $4.50 for a half teacup of coffee - literally. She wrote half cup in parenthesis on our bill."

  • "The food was fantastic and the service was wonderful. Have already recommended to a number of friends and we are going to go again real soon! Eclectic cuisine! Can't rate this place high enough!"

  • "Rez for 4 last Tuesday, the 27th. At 8pm a guitar/ clarinet duo performed. Fabulous. Food was very good. Evening was even better. "

  • "I went to Toast! for the first time a few months ago with another couple that raved about the place. It was fantastic experience, so we wanted to do a double date here with another couple, and somehow the service left a little to be desired this time. It seemed like the waiter just didn't like us for some reason. He wasn't rude but not polite either. The food was still fabulous, and I highly recommend getting the jalapeno aioli on the burger. The house chips are honestly better than spending an extra $2 on the fries. The beer selection was a little lacking this time as well, but this bar is known more for their wines and spirits than beer, so I can't really criticize that. But something about this experience felt off from last time."

  • "Tried Toast for the first time for a birthday dinner. It took 15 minutes for a server to come over to our table. I had to ask if we had a server and was told yes and that it was the bartender. It took very long throughout the meal to get anything (ordering, refills, etc). Service was not acceptable and very frustrating to deal with. Owner came to table and apologized and compensated by taking items off bill but still wouldn't go back as the food wasn't anything special and the service was awful."

  • "Never the same menu twice. Have lightened up on the beer restriction-once only offering local brews they've expanded to offering a wider variety. Service is casual but attentive. Can ride in on your bike or come straight from the theatre."

  • "Toast used to be a decent restaurant. No More. Dinner was pre cooked shrimp on a bed of lukewarm grits. The vegetable medley was tiny bits of pepper, hardly a side. Very disappointing experience, I will not go back."

  • "We enjoyed having a birthday dinner at Toast. The lamb meatballs appetizer was outstanding. The artichoke aioli appetizer was good but not as special. Main courses of scallops were tasty but watch out for the green chili peppers. The menu has a wide range of offerings. Wine by the glass was good. Service was friendly and attentive. We'd go back."

  • "We had a really nice time at Toast. Everything was good. Not great, but very good. We would definitely go back. The location, although easy to find, is not the best, but the ambiance itself was fine. The service was about average, so no worries there. The wine list, while not excessive, has some mighty fine choices. I had the fried chicken which I must say was excellent. Just enough spice, mixed with some sweet. Good stuff. My wife ordered the pasta and vegetables and it was rather blame. But she explained this to the staff and they brought her some extra Parmesan and all was right with the world. We would recommend and will return at some point."

  • "We had a great meal here with a friend from out of town. We were hoping to impress her with all the changes our beloved city has made. Unfortunately we looked second-rate when the kitchen "lost" our order between the first course and entree, leading us to have a very long wait for our dinner plates. On the "plus" side, the food was delicious."

  • "The Hot Chicken is one of the best dishes I have had in Pittsburgh in quite awhile. The shrimp and grits wee excellent. Good evening."

  • "The food, drink and ambiance were great, however, the service was less than desirable. I'm not sure why it's called a wine bar because there was nothing special or extensive about the wine list - all wines that you could get in the local state store. The small plates were good but kind of overpriced - the flatbreads were delicious though."

  • "The lamb meatballs are amazing and every wine pairing was perfect. We all ordered different entrees and each of us was not disappointed. Will definitely eat here again when we are in Pittsburgh."

  • "I was in a party of 5 people this past Friday night who are very hard to organize together and we were served by Heather, who made all of us very uncomfortable and unwelcome from the start. Telling a guest to not order a lamb dish, pressuring to know when people will come, attitude, etc and if it wasn't for the planning to get everyone together, I would've left the restaurant then and there without paying a cent. I don't know how long Heather (left eyebrow pierced, thin figure, jaw length fine brown hair) has worked in the restaurant business or any job for that matter, but she needs serious customer service training and skills. And I have seen her name on a bad review on Google review - it's not just me. Toast lost my business for good."

  • "Everything about our experience was just ok. We had a great table. The service was serviceable (no pun intended), the wine was very good, the salads were very good, the entrees were adequate. The place looked a little "down at heel", and it didn't appear that anyone was making the extra effort. There are so many other places to try, we won't be rushing back here."

  • "Both couples love good wine and food, and when we find a place that is also comfortable and welcoming, it becomes a favorite go-to destination. We had a simple meal - salads to start, fish, scallops, steak for entrees, and homemade chocolate pudding for dessert. All good - made with excellent ingredients and served graciously. The table was ready when promised, and the bill was not bad, either!"

  • "I found that Toast was a Diner's Choice Winner and the menu on the website looked really interesting. The night we went the restaurant was pairing Burgers and Bourbon. One of our party had this and said it was wonderful. Another person who never finishes her meal had the Scottish Salmon and the plate was clean! I had the Hanger Steak which was done perfectly. The only disappointment was the Creme Brulee and it is probably because we didn't read the description carefully. It is made with Bourbon so it has a very different taste. I wasn't what we expected and we didn't finish it. Our original first instinct was Fried Dough and we probably should have gone with our first choice."

  • "My friends and I wanted to do a double date for the Thursday Burger/Beer/Bourbon night. For $12, you get a decent burger [or veggie burger], homemade BBQ chips, Duquesne pilsner/Brown Dog Ale (more on this later), and a shot of Rebel Yell. It's not worth upgrading the burger, as each topping is $2 extra, but the $2.50 beer upgrade is totally worth it (any draft, we did the Founders Imperial Stout). You can also upgrade the bourbon, but none of the 3 cocktail upgrades were up my alley. The service was decent, but the server forgot to bring out our complimentary bread and at times would disappear, but the restaurant was decently busy that we understood how it can be some nights. I'm glad we made a reservation. Would definitely go back."

  • "Our party of 7 all enjoyed the atmosphere of Toast. The Lobster Mac and Cheese was wonderful as was the asparagus salad. Everyone was quite pleased with their wine choices. There is something for everyone on the menu from adventurous foodies to more conventional eaters. I look forward to returning to try other dishes."

  • "First, it took nearly a half-hour to get drinks after we first arrived. Our waiter was very apologetic, it certainly was not his fault, and told us that there was a new bartender - too bad she had to start on a Saturday night. Secondly, the food tasted good, unfortunately it was just a little warm. Almost like it had been microwaved on low but not warmed the whole way through. We won't be going back."

  • "The server acted as if he were being put out by having to wait on our table. It took him 5-10 minutes to even address the table, he forgot to give us a bread basket, and then did not give change on a cash payment and assumed the rest was his to keep! The food was not good enough to overcome such poor service. I do not plan on returning to this restaurant anytime soon."

  • "We decided to eat at the bar although there were a couple of available tables downstairs. There is also an upstairs dining room. Mussels were great as was the chicken entrée...and, the "surprise" wine. Enjoyed the atmosphere on a cold night and the convenience to Shadyside."

  • "The restaurant reminded us of small European restaurants we've been to for ambience, including the small spaces and tight tables. The design was great and the service very good. I would give the food an A for presentation, but in the end was not wowed (until the check arrived), and actually a bit disappointed with the starter and dessert. The wine selection was great, and overall a very enjoyable dinner so would give this place great marks, but perhaps not tops for dining. Nice place to kick back and sip a glass of wine though."

  • "The answer to everything was No. No, you can't come a few minutes late (because my flight was delayed due to weather) , No you cannot substitute roasted potatoes for mashed potatoes (even if their on the menu) . No,No,No, (without even asking the chef or owner) . Not friendly service."

  • "We went for the first time on Valentines Day! The food was outstanding with lovely wine pairings. Our waiter was able to give us great suggestions. I had the tasting menu & my husband had the filet. Our meals were prepared perfectly. The ambiences is super small and cute, which I like. We did have to wait for a table for about 20 minutes even though we had a reservation, but maybe this was because it was Valentines Day. We will definitely return - so excited to have found this unique spot so close to us!"

  • "We had dinner at Toast last Friday evening and I was not disappointed! The ambiance was unique, the wine flight was great to try different varieties and the food was high quality. The wine pours are extremely generous here. You could tell the food was homemade. I liked that we could talk to each other and not have to shout. We will definitely go back!!"

  • "Great wine and fair prices. Food paired with it is very odd. Mac and cheese with a fried egg? Breaded scallops in a pilaf bowl? Cheese was way over priced from the portion they gave but very tasty. Great staff, very good knowledge on wine. Good place for wine drinkers. Not so great if you're hungry."

  • "The food was hugely disappoining, tasteless and totally forgettable. While portion size is not material, the cheese plate was pitiful. Better to spnd your money somewhere else."

  • "My husband and I go to Toast every year for our anniversary. It is a wonderful place with delicious food and wine. We really enjoy the wine pairings with each course. Desserts are also delicious! This year, they gave us a celebratory glass of champagne after we were seated. This made the experience more special. We love Toast and will return again on our next anniversary or hopefully sooner!!"

  • "I LOVE that Toast provides 2, 4, and 8 oz wine pour (all at the same relative price to a full glass). My wife and I each enjoyed 3, 2 oz pours and the chef's tasting menu. Wonderful restaurant."
