Diner Reviews
  • "I love this restaurant and the food is impeccable. Delicious and reasonable wine list. The service was unusually slow this time, but we were having a great time with good friends and didn't mind too much. Hope it improves, though."

  • "We ordered delicious starters, small plates and drinks. The waitress was fabulous and didn't try to rush us out the door. Kinda noisy inside but will definitely go back. "

  • "Four of us went for dinner, this was our third time dining here. For some reason, this time was disappointing. Our appetizer was outstanding, the fried veggies. Everything else was a bit lackluster, good, but not outstanding as it had been. The salad was fine, but not as good as the quinoa one we had last time. Petrale sole, penne pasta and pork dish were all just okay, lacking in flavor, we salt and peppered to kick it up a bit. The mexican style soup was thin and watery , needed more base. We really love the people here and hope this visit was just an off night. We were very impressed the first few times."

  • "Food is ok. Portions are very small (braised pork shoulder.....extremely small and fatty). Service is way too quick."

  • "this is a great spot on College Ave - the food is vibrant, which matches the decor and service - I really like that there were so many small bites to choose from, plus a soup and salads choices, plus 4 mains to choose from - there was no beef option for the main (pasta, chicken, fish & pork options), which was a little disappointing. But then I ordered the pork, and it it was a home run. It would be nice if they didnt charge $3 for 2 rolls of bread; but the food was generally outstanding - we had the pate, artichoke (amazing), fish and pork - I WILL be back"

  • "The ambiance and staff couldn't have been nicer, however the food was not up to par for the prices. The pork meatballs as a first course were excellent with a lovely rich sauce. The roasted filet of sole however was bland and although it was supposed to be roasted, it appeared poached, and draped over the side dishes. It was not appetizing, tasting bland. They did re-do it and it was at least edible however my partner had a dish he did not like either and said he would not return. I'd return for take-out for a double order of pork meatballs however."

  • "Local and out of town family. They enjoyed the unique sandwich options. The free Chocolate chip cookies are a great touch ! We've been to Toast a number of times. Great for afternoon celebrations, wine, and light snacks. It's a good place to drop in as they have 3 separate seating areas (dinner, inside bar & tables, and outside)."

  • "From their starters to their desserts and drinks, Toast makes some unique and delicious combinations. I left feeling satisfied yet craving every part of our meal!"

  • "The location of Toast makes it very convenient to meet after work. Good food and a good wine list but the staff is the best. Attentive without being clingy, they allow you to enjoy the meal without giving you the impression that they need to turn the table. We had a marvelous time."

  • "Our first time for dinner and first time since they expanded the dining room. My husband, adult son and I went here for my birthday on a Tuesday evening. Bar scene and patio busy, but not crowded. The expanded dining room was pleasantly full at 7PM. Drinks were good, service was friendly, but a bit spotty. Server forgot a couple things, but other staff covered. As for food, we loved the flash-deep-fried chick peas. Olives were good, but not spectacular. Pate and mushroom starters were mediocre. Two liked the arugula/beet salad, one thought it was over-dressed. Entrees - creative, tasty but over-salted. Overall heavy handed on salt and dressing, a few creative and tasty dishes. I'd go back, but my well-traveled, foodie son said he would not."

  • "Having started out as a wine bar and then expanding to a full-scale restaurant, Toast and its chef, Rebecca Boice, have yet to receive the recognition they deserve. Appealing menu and very good service."

  • "In spite of the wind threatening our table umbrella, we had a fabulous lunch on the patio. My friend and I both had the pulled chicken sandwich "Vietnamese style" -- delicious! And to top it off, we were served a complimentary chocolate chip cookie -- filled with large hunks of excellent chocolate."

  • "Great ambiance, good selection on menu but not overwhelming. Something for everyone. Cocktails and wine selection. Everything tasted great and they were able to fit us in last minute."

  • "I love TOAST! It's a bit surprising that it's one of so few brunch options on College Ave. While the wine and food is all super tasty; the brunch menu is too focused. With that amazing patio and great drinks, this place would have a line out the door if it expanded its menu to feature more brunch favorites. Still, this is my go-to for a walkable weekend brunch or mid-day/happy hour drink."

  • "The seats are a bit uncomfortable. The food was very good, with nice wines. Good service, polite and efficient. I would definitely go again."

  • "I love this local place and was very sad to learn they will soon be closed on Mondays for lunch and dinner. They also only have their second (and quiet) room open W-Sun. They need your business and deserve it!"

  • "Pork meatballs are great! Good cocktail list. Fun place although I was never sure who our waitperson really was....random people brought and took things away so we started just flagging down someone when we needed something because no one ever came to check in with us."

  • "TOAST was a pleasant surprise. Right near my neighborhood. It was a beautiful sunny day so to be able to eat outside under their umbrellas was perfect. This was followed by a delicious chicken sandwich with hibiscus drink. All this with a chococlate cookie for dessert....I'll be back!"

  • "The noise level is boisterous, but food is creative and delicious! Been many times."

  • "I am astonished that restaurants believe that they can copy the trend food and charge more than the restaurant down the street. Toast's menu was so bland and un-inspiring that we almost got up and left. Every dish we had lacked any flavor. Each dish was very small and lacked the value that was charged. I would warn friends and foes not to go here. I feel sorry for the hipsters that go to this venue believing that they are "in the scene"."

  • "There was a consistency of rude and dismissive service. The "hostess" said to sit anywhere when we arrived and when we sat down, she told us, "Not there, we have a reservation coming." The couple of sat next to laughed because they had the same experience. The waitress asked us to tell her when we were ready to order drinks and mis-informed us of what one type of wine was and the presence of a type of beer on the menu. She only brought up the specials when asked. The food was fine, but nothing special. As my wife said, "You could make this at home." Which is compliment, but at a restaurant like this I expect something more original and well thought out."

  • "TOAST is a great spot for a casual, fun and delicious meal. Extra points to the lovely server who took a couple of photos of us too."

  • "Toast has always been a great place for a glass of wine or a cocktail and a bite to eat. But since they expanded into the space next door, it's become a perfect spot for group dinners and outings because there is so much space on almost any night of the week. And yet they fill the tables so it retains it's bustling atmosphere. Went there for a girls' night out on Saturday to celebrate my birthday and increased the reso from 6 originaslly, then to 8, then to 10 with no problem. Had a great time with good food & drink and great services despite the fact that we had a couple of no-shows and guests coming and going randomly during the evening. I go there with just my husband or a small group of friends up to a large group."

  • "This is a beautiful spot, great wine list and creative menu, our lunch though was blah. Egg salad sandwich was simple and unexciting and not really what the menu described. Service very slow. My neighbors have been there for dinner and loved it so could be an off day for them"

  • "If you are looking for a fun, neighborhood restaurant with great food and service, give Toast in the Rockridge a try. The interior is also beautifully decorated. Overall, we had a wonderful dining experience!"

  • "The name is Toast. There are beautiful repurposed wine bottles all around and a huge drawing of a corkscrew on the wall. The menu says "drink more wine." I get the impression this place is all about the wine and having just come back from the original wine country (France) I was ready to do just that. We went during Oakland's Restaurant Week and was attracted by their preset menu advertising three courses with two wine pairings. Unfortunately, the wines advertised were not poured and the pours were tiny-- half what I'd expect. Cheers? This meal came on the heels of two fantastic Oakland Restaurant Week meals at Ozumo and Lungomare, where we didn't feel like we were in a cafeteria and given sips of what they had to offer."

  • "Had the Oakland Restaurant Week special. Salad was excellent with nice beets and goat cheese. Main course was a half a chicken breast, nicely cooked with brussel sprouts carrots and potatos. Nothing special and way too heavy on salt. Desert was choclate cake, good but ordinary. Wine pairings were excellent. Service was good but a bit intrusive and a team effort. Would prefer one server."

  • "The food at Toast is excellent; however, the noise level is so high, it would not be a romantic evening for dinner. Very good service, but one waiter was a little too anxious to clear the plates attempting to take my dinner before I was finished, then commented "Still working on it, huh?" Both rude and unnecessary. In spite of too loud and a trifle rude, I would return as the food is that good."

  • "Had never been here before. My husband and I tried it for the restaurant week. We were really pleased with how everything turned out. Not only was the food great it was paired with wine. And I had noticed that their menu online was different than the one that was given to us and didn't include the port with the dessert course. Our waitress was so nice and offered it to us anyways since we saw it online. Great service and great food!"

  • "Excellent kitchen. We had three entrees all expertly prepared."

  • "I was disappointed. When my guest arrived, we were invited to choose any available table. Sat down, were served tepid water, waited and waited for a server. As he passed our table, he said he'd be with us soon. My guest ordered salad that included tuna confit, was told tuna not available, anchovies could be substituted. ??? I ordered a mixed green salad - tasty, but difficult to eat. May sound silly, but fork tines were too thick to be able to pick up sliver-like veggies. I ordered coffee. Waited, waited - no coffee. Server announced that it was a single drip set-up, coffee would arrive shortly. I cancelled the coffee. I had invited my niece to a birthday lunch. The chocolate chip cookie was great, but not a great birthday meal."

  • "The dinner was great and the service was really good. Nice mix of food and it was all well prepared. The room with the bar in it is a little loud, but the other room was less noisy and easier to carry on a conversation. The wine list is fun and full of interesting choices, seems to change so you can give new ones a try."

  • "Try the boca negra, caramel sauce, whipped cream. You won't be sorry (although maybe your waistline will). Too delicious for words."

  • "The place has grate possibilities, but poor management make it just the ordinary. We came for lunch and have to sit an hour and twenty min before we got the food and it was not many people are in the restaurant. The soup was ok,but sausage was to salty."

  • "Great location, good atmosphere, friendly service. I really wanted to love this place but my meal was really disappointing. I had a very tough, chewy pork shoulder steak and the dish was a bit skimpy on the sides. Dessert was good and wait staff was friendly. My friend liked her meal so maybe my experience was a fluke. I might try this place again sometime but I hate being disappointed."

  • "We have gone twice to Toast with friends and both times were impressed with the food and service. I was originally put off by the limited menu but since each thing is cooked to perfection I think it a good idea to have a limited menu and there is enough variety to satisfy everyone's tastes. A great place!"
