Toast used to me my go to spot for wine and appetizers in North Oakland– all the staff knew me I was there so much. It has slowly changed into more of a date night/dinner/cocktail spot at the expense of the wine. I do not recognize anyone anymore, and while that makes me sad, I can get passed that because it is so much more now. Yes it is pricy-ish but it is a great little hip spot to bring a date or go out with friends. I recommend it!

I have been going to Toast since it opened, and it just gets better and better. Love the outdoor seating. Love the seasonal menu. The ceci beans are a must as an appetizer. There's always something new and tasty on the menu. If you're there in the fall, look for the housemade sausage with sweet potatoes and kale. Seriously excellent. My tablemates and I licked the plate clean.

The atmosphere is warm and energetic. The starters and entrees were good, especially the arugula and fig salad. The dessert (chocolate mousse in an almond crust) was disappointing as the crust was very tough. The pacing of the meal was off, long waits between courses. The tables along the back wall were close together, so it was awkward when the staff would stand between the tables to address one table, but putting their back very much in the space of the next table.

The food was California style creative with awesome salads and such. We sat outside and enjoyed the warmth of the headlamps along with the street ambiance. It's a little noisier out there as College is busy but the road isn't fast moving so it's not too loud. Great dining. Really enjoyed the Fernet sampler I had at the end of the meal.

Lunch of three meatballs was just that - three meatballs with a little tomato sauce and some shavings of parmesan. At $13 definitely overpriced. I've had some good dinners at Toast. This time was a serious disappointment.

Our reservation was for 10am on a Saturday morning. When we got there, we were notified that several items (including Biscuits & Gravy) were not ready and we would have to wait an extra 20 minutes. Then we were forced to make 2nd choice, the egg dish was good, but not what we wanted.

Toast is our favorite of the "Rockridge Row" of many excellent restaurants in the neighborhood. The staff is attentive and professional yet also welcoming and relaxed. Their cocktails are distinctive and their food is original yet not so far out that I'm not afraid to try something new. The new arugula salad is terrific, and the chicken and pork dishes are delicious. We had a family reunion dinner at Toast last fall and ordered one of everything on the menu and loved it all!

Was left sitting at table, and no one came near until my other party arrived. Was not offered possibility of a drink. When I did order a drink it had to be asked for twice, and arrived with the meal. In short service was spotty, slow, though pleasant. The food was well prepared and very enjoyable.

I've been here a couple times, usually for an early dinner. This place is consistently very good; my most recent visit was excellent. Our waitress was perfect. Thanks to her knowledge of the menu I tried a very interesting small plate: tempura-fried onions and apples with a red bean miso dip/paste. I also recommend the cocktails.

Despite reservations, took 10-12 minutes to be seated, then another 10 min before any wait staff showed up. We ordered drinks and 20 min later, still nothing. Manager happened by to ask how things were going and we reported our 40+ min into our evening there and still nothing, so he checked on our drinks. He said something about the bar being backed up, which I HATE BECAUSE I REALLY DON'T WANT AN EXCUSE. Nonetheless, he was back quickly with our drinks, which he comped (that was classy, but then he pointed out the "time stamp" on bar order to claim it was only 10 min, which was insulting) but once the food arrived, both dishes were very tasty. I especially liked my pork shoulder and polenta.

I have visited TOAST multiple times, and it has become one of my favorite neighborhood spots to pop into for a cocktail and a bite to eat. On a nice day, sitting on the patio is a must. I have found that I enjoy eating off of the lunch and dinner menu more than the bar snack menu, some of these small plates fall flat for me. However, the lunch or dinner menu has a great selection that would satisfy any "foodie" looking for a meal that is genuinely good, though maybe not the most inventive or cutting edge. While their menu is rather straightforward american fare, their cocktails certainly are not. They are creative, reasonably priced for the quality and very delicious. Come here for the ambience, cocktails and the lunch/dinner menu.

We had white bean puree, fried garbanzo beans, and Halibut. All of it was very good! Liquor menu consisted of bottles that we never heard of. They do not use martini glasses but rather sherry glasses which puts a damper on the drink. Expensive wine list. Ambience is just fair. Our appetizer plates were not cleared before the entrees arrive which made for a difficult transition by the waiter. Overall it was a good experience and we would return.

A visiting friend and I came for brunch. We ordered the Chicken Pate, White Bean Dip, Biscuits and Gravy, a BLT, and 2 coffees. The first three items and the coffees were scrumptious. For serious, this might be one of the best sausage gravy I've tasted. However, our BLT never came. The portion of biscuits and gravy was more than enough for two people to share (we did split 2 appetizers tho). When the bill came, the BLT was still listed. We politely requested it be taken off, and they told us that it was "en route". Why would you give us a bill before all the food arrived? Anyway, we decided we didn't need it after all and requested they take it off and they obliged. Despite the mix up, it was a positive experience. Nice people.

I came here for lunch with a friend--we both felt the place had wonderful service. However, the lunch menu seemed a little simple; moreover, our food tasted kind of bland. And the coffee tasted really watered-down. I would give this place another chance sometime, but I can't say it's somewhere I would definitely recommend.

Met friends for an afternoon glass of wine. Toast selected for its patio hard to beat on a sunny Sunday afternoon. The ambiance perfect, the two appetizers yummy, and the waitstaff friendly but clueless. A rose selected by my friends, a Pelegrino & chardonnay for my wife & I. The latter arrived, not so the rose... 5 minutes later, still no rose, we inquired. Wasn't chilled, "out in a minute" the reply. After another five minutes, server called over & a second wine ordered, after confirming such was, indeed, already chilled. The appetizers: pate & toasted almonds. Yummy, but served without napkins, which were needed & had to be requested. A fun place on a sunny Sunday, albeit just a shade-of-service shy of being a great place.

From the moment our party of 8 entered the restaurant, everything went perfectly. We were seated immediately and offered wonderful choice of cocktails by our waiter who seemed to always show up on time. Small plates were delivered almost upon ordering. Our party of 8 ordered 5 different entrees of which ALL were excellent. The service was excellent but low key with each course sufficiently spaced so that we never felt rushed or pressured in any way. Our meal was topped off by a visit from the chef who was humble and appreciative.

This is my fourth time to meet friends for dinner at Toast -- every time my invitees have been enthused and really enjoyed the experience. Ambiance is low key and fun, lighting is good, noise level provides just enough "buzz" to feel like you're in a popular spot (and you are!), yet can always talk comfortably at each table without "competition" from your neighbors. The food is consistently great, service is friendly and very good -- this last time it was outstanding. We were well taken care of, yet the wait staff was discreet enough never to "get in the way" of a great table conversation. I particularly noticed that they operated as a team and helped each other -- none of the stand-offish "not my table" attitude. All in all, A+

I can't remember when I've had as neglectful and poorly executed service as I had at Toast the other night. The length of time between every aspect of service--from delivering menus to taking orders to delivering the drinks or food after ordering, was exceptionally long for no apparent reason. The restaurant wasn't full and when I looked around for the waitress, she didn't seem to be busy or bustling around. When it was finally time for dessert (after 2+ hours), she spilled a carafe of water on one of our party, then offered a free dessert but took a really long time coming back to ask us for our dessert order so we didn't even take her up on the free offer--at that point we all had to get back home to our kids. Just terrible service.
