The food was average at best. Dinner selection was lacking. The service was much better than the food. I would only recommend TJ's for people staying at the Double Tree who did not want to go out for dinner or breakfast and wanted the convenience of eating at the Double Tree.

  • No customers?
    Anniversary
    Dined on 5/19/2014
We made reservations for two to a restaurant that did not have any other customers. Restaurant was completely empty besides us. 2 people were at the bar area and their food was delivered to us instead of the food we ordered!!! Wow!!!! It took forever to get our main meal. Total bill was $85. I could have had a huge dinner somewhere else for that cost, but I guess having the entire restaurant to ourselves was cool. But why were reservations required for a place so unpopular????

This was our third Mother's Special Bunch. The people where great, food was good but was not as happy as we had been with in the past with the menu or the price. I booked on-line for Mothers Bunch Special and I was surprised when I got my bill. The reservation was for four people, was expecting to pay $38.00 per person and the bill came to $50.00 a person. We preferred TJ’s over other locations because the food is just as good as any other five star restaurants with Mother’s Day specials and historically we liked the menu better. Also; I felt they TJ’s gave you a better value for the money until this visit. Not sure if we well go back again.

  • Mothers Day at TJ's Tavern
    OpenTable Diner Since 2012
    Dined on 5/11/2014
We had come there for Mothers Day.This was our first time here. We had heard and read some reviews and feel some were justified. Negative reviews were food being too salty and or cold. We found this to be true unfortunately in some of the areas. To our disappointment we found that they did not even take their store bought desserts out of the cheap aluminum pans they were in and plate them nicely. It was disappointing to see that they could not even make a dessert other than a mouse. Nice atmosphere but poor food .. its a shame

The brunch started at 1130 and we were only able to get reservations for 130. I believe for forty bucks each guest should feel like the good just came out. However other than the roast beef and jam the food was dry, cold and picked over. There were not enough serving utensils and the waitress barely came to check on us to remove plates. I did not get a great value for what I paid I felt taken advantage of.

    Dined on 12/31/2013
The food and our waitress were good, but it was hard to get over the way the hostess treated us. We had reservations and there was no one around to seat us. We went to the back and there was a table or two of people seated. We found the hostess and she took us back to the bar to sit despite us having reservations. Then she only gave us two menus for four people. When I asked her for additional menus, she said that there was a large group in the back that needed them and acted like I was asking for too much. It is a shame that she ruined our impression of the restaurant because the food was good.

Not your "hot date" destination, but a good local choice. TJ's islocated in a DoubleTree that has a bizarre location - just past a Sam's Club. However, the hotel is DoubleTree quality, as is the restaurant. The bar is "pub'ish " though somewhat public. The restaurant decor is unexciting and lacking in ambiance, but it overlooks the Rivanna River and the views in spring are lovely. The menu is adequately varied - something for everyone (as one would expect in a hotel), but the food is consistenly quite good and the service is always friendly. We have dined in both the bar and the restaruant on several occasions and would recommend either for solid reliable dining, pleasant service, and a great people-watching opportunity.

    Dined on 12/25/2013
Despite advanced reservations, we were seated at a high-top in the bar. The waitress was pleasant but overwhelmed. We had to flag her down twice. (She told us they were slammed with 300+ reservations on Christmas Day since there were only two places open in town.) We ordered the standard Christmas turkey dinner. The turkey and roasted vegetables were tasty, but the stuffing was from a box, the mashed potatoes were bland, the gravy was unremarkable and scant (barely covering only the turkey). The red and white wines were minimally acceptable. (The red was served warmer than room temperature and the white was very acidic.) The apple pie was store bought. The ice cream was the best offering of the night.

We had 2:30 reservations on Christmas Day and were seated right away. Service started out quite slow as staff seemed unprepared for the days' crowd, both at the bar and the restaurant. Food was good and things worked out fine. Pleasant lunch and would recommend again from the the few choices available for a meal out on Christmas Day.

This was a last minute reservation to have Thanksgiving lunch with a family member. I was expecting a pleasant lunch, but was pleasantly surprised by the quality, abundance & selection of food choices. We were seated in the dining room behind the bar area w/ big windows looking over the back of the wooded property - the autumn view was complimented by gold table cloths & napkins creating a festive holiday ambiance. We went later in the day, and the turkey was moist and just roasted - quite an accomplishment feeding a few hundred hungry locals. The servers were friendly and the buffet tables were refreshed frequently during our time there. We also both commented on the great crab cakes - more crab that crumbs....we loved them!

Enjoyed the Mother's Day Brunch with a fairly large family. There was plenty of food choices, and most were very good! One problem was the wait staff (or lack thereof). Once seated, no one directed us to the food areas, or took our drink order. We assumed we were supposed to visit the drink station ourselves. Once we realized there was a waitress, it still took a member of our group three requests to get a glass of water. Obviously, there was a problem with having enough staff on a holiday.

I was expecting a breakfast buffet with choices and quality better than than a Hampton In For $12.50 per person I expected a spread reasonably close to the Boar's Head Inn breakfast buffet but that certainly was not the case. I made the reservation to meet a new client and his family and came away feeling a little embarrassed. I will not make this mistake again.

This was one of the loveliest Thanksgiving buffets that I've been to. They had a large variet of dishes & many yummy vegetables. The only downside was that since we were there for the last seating, some of the dishes were not the same when they were refilled: the butternut squash with brown sugar was outstanding but when the pan was refilled, the skins were tough & there was no brown sugar on them. One other suggestion would be to have someone stationed at the dessert table to plate the cakes & pies, since they were self-serve & the beautiful desserts became messy looking from diners having trouble plating their own. But overall, the meal was very nice; service was excellent & it was a really fun time. We would definitely do this again!!

  • A delicious fall tasting menu!
    OpenTable Diner Since 2012

We recently dined at Tj's tavern for an Apple Tasting dinner. Let me just say that it was outstanding. We started with hor devours which consisted of stuffed mushrooms, smoked duck, fresh apple chips and homemade apple jam and much more. Our first course was a delicious butternut squash bisque with chunks of fresh apples inside, followed by fried green tomatoes topped with a fresh scallop and bacon vinnegrette which was to die for! The entree was a succulent pork tenderloin over creamy cabbage as well as a fresh apple tartan. And to finish it off we had an out of this world fresh apple donut with cinnamon ice cream. This dinner was great from beginning to end and really highlighted fall flavors. Look forward to returning soon!

Most of the food items were just average. The roasted turkey was great, it had great flavor. Most everything else was bland or prepared poorly. The waffles were cook and kept in a warming pan. This is unacceptable. The waffles were hard and lukewarm. Waffles should be prepared by order. The omelet station had great choices of ingredients, but it wasn't cooked to the right doneness and there was a lack of seasoning. Overall, I enjoyed the variety of food that was available. The food items represent what I brunch should include. But, mostly every item was very average. This was unexpected.

Although they accepted our reservation, they did not even open the restaurant on the Saturday night we were there--only the bar, AND did not hold a regular table for us...leaving us at a small bar table with high stools and TV sports in the background. The food was barely passable and very salty. Although our server was fine, the hostess was downright hostile. I am mystified why anyone would go here to eat.

I could see that this restaurant has potential, the food was good and the ambiance was nice... maybe it was an off night?

Unfortunately, we were underwhelmed. Despite some good reviews and being inside the Doubletree, our reservation ended up with us sitting at a hi-top table in the lobby bar, essentially seating ourselves and getting served by the bartender. It appears that there is a nice restaurant venue behind the lounge, but it was closed off. Unless you are here overnight on business, or want to overpay for a dinner, I'd move onto other options nearby on route 29 and surrounding Cville.
