Diner Reviews
  • "My husband and I had been looking forward to dining at the Jefferson Hotel for Sunday brunch for several weeks, what a DISAPPOINTMENT!!!!!!!! The space was large and very noisy, the food was terrible, the "hot" dishes were lukewarm at best, the "cold" dishes were room temperature, and the food was bland and flavorless, and this meal was way OVERPRICED! I will definitely not be going back, and will not recommend the restaurant to anyone."

  • "There are almost no restaurants left in Richmond like Lemaire use to be or TJ's. Gone are the days of elegant dinning at The Miller & Rhodes Tea Room, Thalhimers Richmond Room, Mrs. Morton's Tea Room, etc. I have held Bridesmaid luncheons in the Ginter Room in Lemaire but that is not open for lunch now. The Tea's in the Lobby are nice but we would really like to go to a separate Tea Room with a table to sit at instead of in the public lobby. I hear these same comments from many many people. We have the money to spend on something nice but there are limited places to go. We are getting tired of coming to just TJ's even though it is a great place. The Jefferson is the most classic place in town, but give us a few more options!"

  • "We celebrated my birthday with a special breakfast at TJ's, and left feeling as though we'd been on a mini-vacation! Everything was top-notch, and I couldn't have asked for more. Triple chocolate pancakes are a special occasion treat, and the service was all one could expect."

  • "From valet parking to the lobby of the Jefferson, you feel like you are in a special place. It whispers class. My friends and I enjoyed great food and great service in a quiet uncrowded room at TJ's. We topped off lunch with a stroll through their unique gift shop. Richmond is blessed with many good restaurants, but this one is not just about good food and good service, it is about creating a peaceful respite from the busy and noisy world."

  • "Our first experience with Sunday Brunch at the Jefferson. We were not disappointed! Needed another empty tummy to completely do the menu justice. So we'll have to go again!"

  • "Buffet has abundant choices with many wonderful and tasty offerings. Our server was extremely personable and helpful. We had free dessert for our birthday observances which is a pleasant touch. The combo even played "Happy Birthday" for us."

  • "Lunch at TJ's is always a comfortable experience. The dining room chairs are very comfortable and the carpeting keeps the noise at a gentle level. Food is always excellent, and the service attentive."

  • "Yes, the Sunday Brunch is expensive but well worth it for the service, variety of foods, beautiful ambience and the endlessly flowing champagne and orange juice. The breakfast items, especially the Eggs Jefferson and carved ham are the standouts. The rest of the brunch items rotate weekly and can be hit or miss but there is something for everyone. If you have room left, the dessert buffet can satisfy every sweet tooth desire."

  • "We ate there for lunch and the food was good. The waitstaff was great! The history and elegance of the hotel is not matched in Richmond."

  • "The atmosphere and service were top notch. Beautiful hotel and dining room. Very attentive server. The food was a huge disappointment. My salmon was good but the grits were dry and clumped together and fried. Not at all what I expected. My daughter's barbeque was also really dry. I understand that it was Carolina barbeque (although not specified on the menu) and that it was vinegar seasoned rather than with barbeque sauce, but it was just not good. So super disappointed. I was hoping that the Jefferson would be our go-to restaurant when we visit our daughter at VCU. Not so much."

  • "I travel a lot and have the opportunity to eat/stay at a lot of places -- this will go down as one of my all-time favorites. Great food; great service; jaw-dropping architecture; a great experience overall!"

  • "Food at brunch was really good as usual. Found a fair amount that the vegetarians in the group would eat, but I wish they had a way of noting which items are vegetarian because it's not always easy to tell. The omnivores loved it all. Service was good, drinks refilled regularly and so much to eat! It's a pricy option for brunch but it's worth it every now and then for the atmosphere and it's also a great place for people-watching. We take our kids there too and they always find more than enough to eat that they like."

  • "I was really looking forward to a Saturday lunch with my husband...I had decided before we left home that I wanted the flank steak. It arrived luke-warm so they heated it up...food was so salty that you could not taste the food. The server took the cost off the bill so all was well. I do love this restaurant but note to the chef is that most people salt their own food to taste."

  • "We have enjoyed the Christmas Champagne breakfast for several years. We always ask for a table upstairs and until the last couple of years -that hasn't been a problem. I asked specifically for a table upstairs but was seated in the rotunda. With the buffet line, there were so many people constantly walking around us that we could barely have a conversation. It feels like we are squashed in there like a can of sardines. We felt like we were in the way all the time. Our server was very slow. Our coffee cups were empty for a good while before he refilled them. The food was very good but not exceptional. For the price, we expect excellent service and incredible food."

  • "My 3 girlfriends and I have been doing the Sunday Brunch since 2007. We love it we love the food but it would be nice if they would change the food menu every once and a while. I tried the waffle sundae for the first time it was great. I especially love the deserts. Everyone is always so very nice."

  • "My family and I (8 or 10 of us) gather here each holiday season for a special treat -- the Sunday brunch at the Jefferson! It is elegant, delicious and the service is always pleasant and courteous. It's especially nice to have a live combo playing in the background, and folks are generally dressed up a little more than usual. My 3 grandsons do justice to the buftet, and we all enjoy the Christmas decorations, the architecture and the delicious food."

  • "We had a reservation 12:15. We arrived early and was asked to wait. At 12:15 on the dot we returned to be seated but there seemed to be some confusion of where they would put us and who would be the wait staff. Afrer the two ladies had conversation we were asked to follow and be seated. We sat, and sat, and sat and sat. Finally, at 12:40 when I was going to ask about our waiter; Jackie came over and asked if anyone had attended to us. No, was the resounding answer. She apologized and offered us a free glass of champagne for our inconvenience of waiting. However, I believe the mumbling in front they mentioned Jackie would take care of us. Apparently, no one told Jackie. After the rough start things were lovely."

  • "Everything about T. J.'s was outstanding! The regionally-oriented food was heavenly; the ambience was very much in keeping with Thomas Jefferson's classic standards; our well-informed waiter was friendly and attentive but never annoying; and the decorations for Christmas absolutely spectacular---and appropriate! Even if everything else were not so great, I would come here for the Peanut Soup alone! Thank you, T.J.'s, for being so perfect."

  • "A return visit but this time during the Christmas season. All staff friendly and cooperative. Server perhaps a bit inexperienced but unfailingly friendly and accommodating. Atmosphere was relaxed and relatively quiet despite several large groups. Food was excellent (our children particularly recommend the lamb stew)."

  • "During the Christmas holiday season, my two older granddaughters & I have lunch at TJ's and attend a holiday performance at the theater or, as we did this year, The Nutcracker. My girls enjoy looking at all the decorations in the hotel as well as having a special lunch! The wait staff always makes "a fuss" over the girls. The valet parking is also a fun novelty for them."

  • "TJs has a great Jefferson Hotel menu. They also put us in a room that seperated us from a large holiday party in the lower lobby. But the room was poorly decorated with many tables not set, one without a table cloth. Looked like a neglected ballroom. I guess I expected more from the Jefferson."

  • "I made reservations for the four of us friends who wanted to be certain we would get our luncheon in before Christmas. I made it months ago because last year we waited and had to wait until after Christmas. Not only did the Jefferson send me an e-mail to remind me two days before but followed up with a call the day before also. I appreciated the attention to detail. We had a delicious meal and lots of conversation. We plan on doing it again next year!."

  • "DInner was nothing special....Food was good, but everything(appetizers and entrees) all came out at the same time and they forgot my salad....Not what you would expect from the Jefferson....."

  • "If you want a quieter place to dine and enjoy superior service in a rather elegant setting I'm sure this would qualify. Christmas holiday at the Jefferson is the backdrop of my memorable experience. The decorations of the Jefferson add to the quality of the dining experience. Although the menu is limited our choices were well presented and very tasty. Something for everyone, the vegan, the sea lover, the meat eater were represented, our scallops were cooked very nicely with a smear of sauce on plate."

  • "Lunch at The Jefferson was a great experience. The scenery was beautiful, the food good and the staff very friendly, helpful and gracious. The peanut soup..."Mr Jefferson's own recipe" per our waitress was creamy and very flavorful and the creme brûlée was the perfect ending to a leisurely lunch. From it's hotel rating and decor, you would expect a very staid atmosphere but everyone was pleasant and gracious. I would definitely recommend a trip to The Jefferson for a meal, brunch or tea."
