Diner Reviews
  • "Calamari came out under-cooked, but that was quickly and happily corrected. Wife loved the scallops and risotto (swapped beets for mushrooms). Strip steak was fine, as was potato tart and veggies. Caught it just before dinner crowd, so it was mostly empty. Staff was helpful and pleasant. Convenient spot across from train. Easily accommodated two gluten-free diners. Would recommend, will likely return."

  • "The food and service were fine. It's one of the few restaurants near Madison Square Garden. they take reservations. The noise level is so high it's impossible to have a conversation."

  • "Seemingly iconic, requires some tolerance. Superb food and drink. Too small for comfort."

  • "This place is a great pub environment with food that is way above your typical pub fare. It can noisy but that's part of the fun."

  • "The dry vodka martini didn't taste like the Grey Goose I ordered straight up; it was weak and lacked the consistency of Grey Goose. The tomato salad was awesome, and the scallops/risotto were very good, but bread wasn't offered, and there was not vegetable. Considering the price of the entree, we thought that was a tad chintzy. That having been said, Tir na nOg is a friendly and convenient spot that"s for brunch and/or lunch. I've dined there and had drinks there on many occasions when in New York and am certain to return. Our server was wonderful."

  • "My friend and I arrived around 4:30 p.m. on a Wednesday for an early dinner (w/in a block of Penn Station for ease in catching an evening train). We were amongst the first few tables to be seated, but soon all tables were full and the bar area was overflowing with a standing-room-only crowd. By then, the volume in the restaurant was so loud that my friend and I were no longer able to converse. This could have been frustrating except that the food was so delicious and the service so appropriate that we made the most of this exceptionally good meal. Go for the food and the party atmosphere but be prepared for cacophony."

  • "We were looking for a place to eat near Madison Square Garden, and found this pub. It could not be more convenient to our concert at the Garden, so we gave it a try, and boy, were we glad. This will be my new go-to whenever attending a Garden event! The drinks were amazing - not watered down at all - the food was great as was the service. I highly recommend!"

  • "We had a frustrating experience. We had to hunt down a server after no one came to our table at all. Then when we mentioned that we had a concert so were on tight time constraint, nothing changed. We ordered drinks and food together - but then once the food was delivered no one came to check up on us. We had to hunt someone down for our check as well."

  • "We took my mother-in-law here to eat before a concert at MSG. Our reservations were at 6pm. We enjoyed dinner, our server was very nice and at 7pm on the dot the host/manager ( an Irish older man) came over and asked us to wrap it up because we booked our reservations on OPEN TABLE and that only allotted us an hour to eat. I was appalled. We had already asked for the check at that point but to have someone come over and basically tell you that you needed to leave was something that in all the years of living in NYC has never happened to me or my husband. I will never eat there again before a show at MSG."

  • "Tir na nOg is our favorite place to eat and have a cocktail or two when arriving to NYC from NJ. The food is very good and the Irish staff are very, very friendly. We have never had a bad meal there. Good wine list, great steak, salmon, fish and chips, corned beef sandwiches, friendly bar tenders. Great pre concert and the Garden place. Right across the street from Penn Station."

  • "Noise level was distracting, but our table was waiting for us. Drinks came quickly but bread wasn't served until after our food arrived. Shepherd's Pie was yum and. Read basket very fresh."

  • "We were a group of 7. The food was superb... the mussels with the fennel was outstanding, and the service was perfect and attentive. We loved it."

  • "We had been here a few times before and it was good. This time was just pretty awful. First, we got a phone call to confirm our reservation. The woman stated that we would have to eat quickly because our reservation was for one hour only. They stated that they were very busy and needed the table. This was before we even got there. The waitress was bland, the food was boring, the service? what service? It's a shame, used to be a fun place to grab a bite before a concert or before catching a train home. Too many other good places to go, dont waste your time with this one."

  • "Had dinner at this Irish Pub after a Broadway show and on the way home. The restaurant is across the street from Penn Station (Madison Square Garden) so a perfect stop before getting on the train for the ride home. I and my companion ordered the Shepherd's Pie -- the real thing made with lamb. It was great. Service was very attentive. The place was very busy with an energetic bar crowd. Lots of draft and bottled beers on the menu. No sports events were scheduled for the Garden this evening -- I can't imagine how busy this place must get before a Nicks or Rangers game."

  • "The food and service were excellent. There were 12 of us and we all thought it was a great place to have a group dinner. This made me feel good since I recommended it. All had a wonderful time."

  • "We were seated right away and had lovely, patient service. The food was excellent, but it was a very small menu. Would have liked more veg. It was VERY loud and crowded and hard to carry on a conversation. "

  • "We were taking our family to Madison Square Garden Theater on Easter Sunday. There are not a lot of choices for restaurants in this location. We weren't expecting much but were surprised and pleased at the quality of the food we were served. The food is simple but the quality is excellent. We were all helping ourselves to the marvelous french fries on our son's plate. They graciously prepared french toast for our granddaughter which was not on the menu. I enjoyed my salmon salad and my husband enjoyed his blackened chicken salad. "

  • "Had an early dinner on April 18th prior to the Billy Joel concert at MSG. This place was mobbed. We had shepherd's pie and fish and chips along with a seafood soup and a mushroom goat cheese tart. Everything was delicious. The music was loud and the crowd chatter was louder... as long as that doesn't bother you... you will love this place!"

  • "Had the Mahi Mahi..perfect. my husband had the Fish and Chips well prepared. .crispy FF. Food is excellent but the noise level is over the top. Maybe we'll try lunch next time"

  • "I've visited Tir na nOg many times over the years and it never disappoints. The food is very good (Shepperd's Pie is tops and the Roasted Chicken is very good) and the service is friendly and very attentive. The location, across from Penn Station and MSG, make it an ideal spot to connect with friends after work, before a commute, before and after a game. Good selection of Beer's and the bar is always vibrant but not too loud. The atmosphere is still intimate and you can have a conversation without yelling. Definitely not pretentious as many of the bars in the area are becoming, it just is and...that's a good thing. Cheers!"

  • "made a reservation on open table an hour before. Went there before the rangers game. the place was packed! I got a Guinness immediately. they got us seated & served promptly. Had the sheperds pie and my wife had the scallops. very good. excellent service, good food! Located across the street from MSG. I will make it my destination before any event at MSG!"

  • "I was disappointed. Clearly quiet for a Saturday night. Had to move our table beaches a band started setting up right next to us. The food was typical bar fare but tried too hard with items like tuna tartare. This was served with Pringles!"

  • "The food was perfect and the prices, though typical of NYC, were worth every penny-we both ordered seafood. The service was a little odd. When we didn't order drinks the waitress disappeared and never came back until we flagged her down to order our meals. We were chatting away, so perhaps she didn't want to interrupt, but it was odd. Had we not been busy chatting away we would probably have been annoyed at being ignored. Once we ordered, the service was excellent. I would definitely go again because the service early on had no impact on our enjoyment of the meal. We had a reservation and were seated right away. I would definitely recommend reservations for busy nights like weekends or when there are events at Madison Square Gardens."

  • "We ate here last year and service was outstanding and so was the food. This year the service was not very good. There were not many people in the very back, just us for almost 1/2 an hour, but we both felt that we were being pushed into leaving. Hey - it was 5:45. We were never asked if we wanted coffee or dessert and definitely felt rushed. The staff was just standing around when we left. The food was very good, but very disappointed in service. My friend loves the place and we will probably be back next year for her birthday, but not at 5:45, maybe earlier like the first year when it was GREAT!"

  • "This Irish Bar has become my favorite NYC restaurant after 3 wonderful visit. Two of the visits were with my young grandsons and the waitresses both times showed such patience with them. Between my co-diners and the three visits, I think we have tried all the menu items with a big thumbs up. The Shepherds pie was a hit. The lemon tart is so good,I wanted to take an extra slice home. From the hostess to the bus boy, the wait staff were friendly, respectful and good at their job. The atmosphere, especially when were there on a Friday evening, can be noisy, but I felt that only added to the festive air.If you prefer a more subdued eating environment, take a pass on this restaurant. But you will miss out on some good food and friendly service."
