Tierra Sur Restaurant, inside Herzog Wine Cellars new state-of-the-art winery, is a New Americanseasonal cuisine,

With Tierra Sur, Gabe Garcia's cooking is rustic, unpretentious and ingredient driven utilizing local farmers when ever available. Menu items such as aged rib-eye steak and wild salmon are cooked outdoors over an open flame. The menu also includes house-made organic corn tortillas with exotic fillings such as birria (chili-braised lamb) with salsa cruda and grilled achiote-marinated red snapper with tomatillo salsa. A high point of the menu is the prix fixe wine tasters meal with wine pairings for each course.Continued

  • "As there are no vegetarian dishes on the dinner entree menu I asked, on the morning of our visit, that the chef be made aware of my dietary requirements. When we arrived that evening it was obvious that the chef had no interest in accommodating me. With a little bit of imagination and effort the chef could have put together a very nice vegetable platter. I ordered a vegetable side and was served a small amount of polenta with a few hard green beans on top. When I asked, again, for more vegetables I was brought a side of yet more of those green beans and a few vinegary mushrooms. So disappointing. Why not add a vegetarian option to the dinner menu so that vegetarians can be made to feel welcome."

  • "I've been to Tierra Sur three times. Nice ambiance, inside and outside seating, waiters present but not obtrusive, pleasantly quiet. I especially like their dessert wines, but their Cabs are good too, and I enjoyed a "Zin Gris" rose - crisp, much drier than a white Zinfandel. The highlight, especially for a kosher foodie, is their meat. I had a delicious, well seasoned rib eye steak (I think I tasted rosemary), rare as requested. I have enjoyed the short ribs in the past. The side dishes and dessert were less special. Tomato soup and bread with garlic olive oil were delicious - I'm discerning about these. So go for the meat and enjoy a glass of wine."

  • "The burger had no flavor and the bacon was minuscule and burned! I was expecting a freshly baked bun, but it was stale and the burger had no gourmet spread. The fries had too much rosemary. The restaurant was fully booked and we waited almost an hour for our food. I was disappointed!!!"

Very generous portions; my husband and I always bring home enough for another meal. If it was any other restaurant serving such generous portions, we would probably just order one meal and split it, but my husband refuses to do that here because he wants to take home the extra so he can enjoy it again!"

  • "The menu is different every time we make our way to Oxnard to dine here and the food has always been amazing. However on our most recent trip with our 2 small toddlers we discovered they do not have booster seats or high chairs. I have one toddler that stays in her seat pretty well, but one very curious one who does not. It became a bit difficult when waiting for food to keep her entertained enough to stay seated and keep her from wanting to explore, simply because she was able to hop off her seat at will. A high chair would have kept her seated and we could have distracted her with coloring. We ended up leaving quickly because of it."

  • "We arrived for lunch only to be advised that the facility had no power due to a car accident down the road earlier in the day. The Menu was therefore limited. The dining room had plenty of outdoor light. The staff was amazing at making it a great experience despite the difficult situation. The food was really great even though the menu was limited. They worked hard to make everyone comfortable and not focus on the blackout. The restrooms had a series of really nice candles to light the way. I can only imagine how great it would have ben when they actually have power"

All of the dishes were well prepared, tasty and beautifully presented. The waiters were personable and attentive. I am a wine club member, so also get a discount at the restaurant. Overall, we had a great experience and recommend this restaurant."

  • "We always look forward to great food and kosher too whenever we visit the area from Texas. This time we celebrated 90th birthday and he even received a complimentary dessert. Our server Jacob was very pleasant and helpful, the second time he has waited on our group--last time in December. We shared a steak for two and it was superb--melted in our mouth. The only other comment is this restaurant is pricey."

  • "This was our second time at Tierra Sur. Last time was when the opening chef was still running the kitchen. The menu is not as innovative as it was under Chef Todd Aarons. I was disappointed by my duck; the breast was chewy and the fat was not properly rendered. The dish paled in comparison to the duck breast I had at Michael Symon's Lola a couple of weeks ago. The fish dishes were more successful, as were the appetizers. Prices are rather high; while I understand that it is more expensive to run a kosher restaurant, when I pay in the $40 and $50 range for main courses and $20 plus for appetizers, I expect perfection. Service was friendly and prompt but not as professional as I expect in a restaurant of this caliber."

  • "While the rest of my group had a fabulous meal (Lamb Wellington and Rib Eye for Two), I ordered the duck done two ways, and the breast came well under done. When I told the waiter, he took it back. The replacement was not a newly seared breast, but the same confit leg (I had taken a couple of bites already) and the slices of breast that were left from the old plate seared and returned. The fritters were on the dry side. The plate came back without the kale. Ultimately it was tasty but I didn't expect that from the most expensive and high end kosher restaurant in Southern California."
