With Tierra Sur, Gabe Garcia's cooking is rustic, unpretentious and ingredient driven utilizing local farmers when ever available. Menu items such as aged rib-eye steak and wild salmon are cooked outdoors over an open flame. The menu also includes house-made organic corn tortillas with exotic fillings such as birria (chili-braised lamb) with salsa cruda and grilled achiote-marinated red snapper with tomatillo salsa. A high point of the menu is the prix fixe wine tasters meal with wine pairings for each course.Continued

  • "Definitely the best restaurant in Ventura County for fine dining. Last night I had the lamb wellington, and it was delicious. Very generous portions; my husband and I always bring home enough for another meal. If it was any other restaurant serving such generous portions, we would probably just order one meal and split it, but my husband refuses to do that here because he wants to take home the extra so he can enjoy it again!"

  • "The menu is different every time we make our way to Oxnard to dine here and the food has always been amazing. However on our most recent trip with our 2 small toddlers we discovered they do not have booster seats or high chairs. I have one toddler that stays in her seat pretty well, but one very curious one who does not. It became a bit difficult when waiting for food to keep her entertained enough to stay seated and keep her from wanting to explore, simply because she was able to hop off her seat at will. A high chair would have kept her seated and we could have distracted her with coloring. We ended up leaving quickly because of it."

  • "We arrived for lunch only to be advised that the facility had no power due to a car accident down the road earlier in the day. The Menu was therefore limited. The dining room had plenty of outdoor light. The staff was amazing at making it a great experience despite the difficult situation. The food was really great even though the menu was limited. They worked hard to make everyone comfortable and not focus on the blackout. The restrooms had a series of really nice candles to light the way. I can only imagine how great it would have ben when they actually have power"

  • "Came to wine taste and share some appetizers with a friend on a Thursday night. We had a seared Ahi Tuna appetizer, Tomato Soup and some Lamb Chorizo Flatbread. All of the dishes were well prepared, tasty and beautifully presented. The waiters were personable and attentive. I am a wine club member, so also get a discount at the restaurant. Overall, we had a great experience and recommend this restaurant."

  • "We always look forward to great food and kosher too whenever we visit the area from Texas. This time we celebrated 90th birthday and he even received a complimentary dessert. Our server Jacob was very pleasant and helpful, the second time he has waited on our group--last time in December. We shared a steak for two and it was superb--melted in our mouth. The only other comment is this restaurant is pricey."

  • "This was our second time at Tierra Sur. Last time was when the opening chef was still running the kitchen. The menu is not as innovative as it was under Chef Todd Aarons. I was disappointed by my duck; the breast was chewy and the fat was not properly rendered. The dish paled in comparison to the duck breast I had at Michael Symon's Lola a couple of weeks ago. The fish dishes were more successful, as were the appetizers. Prices are rather high; while I understand that it is more expensive to run a kosher restaurant, when I pay in the $40 and $50 range for main courses and $20 plus for appetizers, I expect perfection. Service was friendly and prompt but not as professional as I expect in a restaurant of this caliber."

  • "While the rest of my group had a fabulous meal (Lamb Wellington and Rib Eye for Two), I ordered the duck done two ways, and the breast came well under done. When I told the waiter, he took it back. The replacement was not a newly seared breast, but the same confit leg (I had taken a couple of bites already) and the slices of breast that were left from the old plate seared and returned. The fritters were on the dry side. The plate came back without the kale. Ultimately it was tasty but I didn't expect that from the most expensive and high end kosher restaurant in Southern California."

  • "While wine and service are always great, I recommend this place more for lunch where food is a standout with more choices and more affordability. I object to the entree being plated with the meat or fish on top of a jumble of other items. The description sounds better than the result. For example I ordered the Duck which is described as follows: Confit duck leg and seared duck breast with fennel-green garlic fritter, sautéed swiss chard and smoked tomato-bean ragout and red wine reduction. What I got was seared duck breat, and grilled duck leg (not confit) sitting on top of lots of beans, a little chard with a couple of fritters which were not flavorful and were very dry. However lunch there is consistently good."

  • "We had a nice dining experience, but.... Felt very rushed by our waiter. First time coming to the table, asked if we wanted water, told us about the special, and did not ask if we wanted wine!! It's a winery, of course we did. We asked if we could order wine and he pointed out the wine list and left. Came back and asked if we were ready to order.... Dinner, no, we said would like to start by ordering wine. I think he came back 3 more times to see if we were ready to order dinner. He never came back to ask if we would like another glass of wine we had to ask the guy that served the salads. Anyway, he waiting style was unlike our first 2 experiences."

  • "I bought a Groupon after hearing such great reviews of the winery and the restaurant. All around disappointed. Did not find the wines to be very good or interesting, even their reserve cab. Food way over priced as others have noted, even with Groupon, was not a deal. We tried 4 appetizers as my friend did not like the fish - but also, $45 for Halibut is excessive. I understand the meat is more expensive as kosher, but not fish. We had the kielbasa, the lamb sausage flat bread, the romaine salad and the beef cheeks. Beef cheeks were terrible and we did not eat them; flat bread was best but so rich, kielbasa ok and romaine fine...Sadly, I will not return."

  • "I had seen some negative remarks on Yelp by group who used a coupon. We had a groupon and never, ever, did we recieve less than top notch service. The host at wine tasting bar was very nice , as were servers. My daughter and I were seated for our dinner reservation and aour waiter suggested we do wine tasting first and offered to hold our table. How nice! His recommendation for wine to go with the duck was spot on (after he inquired about my likes). Our food was exceptional and plentiful. I will retirn without a coupon! Well worth the price!"
