A word from Tiella
Tiella serves modern Southern Italian cuisine. Its inventive and sophisticated menu is inspired by and elevates the home-cooked meals and peasant culinary traditions owners Giuseppe Castellano and Mario Coppola were raised with in Naples, Italy. Indeed, Tiella takes its name from the Neopolitan word for a cast-iron pan that is used for baking, grilling or frying meats, fish and breads. Our signature tiellas are pizza-like appetizers baked in our wood-fired oven.

Our philosophy is that the greatest meals require the finest ingredients. We import mozzarella di bufala, stracciatella and other fine cheeses, as well as risotto and prosciutto from Italy. Many other ingredients are sourced from local producers and farmers. To ensure that we serve the very best bread and pasta, we make our own.

The extensive wine list is comprised of Italian makers and complements the menu.

  • "The food here is authentic Italian heaven. The best pizza I have had in the US. Tiny, cramped but has a great atmosphere. I ate alone on this occasion and felt very comfortable."

  • "When you consider how many good Italian restaurants there are in NYC, Tiella may not be worth the trip (it is a bit out of the way, 1st Ave/61st St). The service was good, not great, as was the food. My pasta dish (Kamut) had tasty sauce, which was nice and hot when they brought it out, but the pasta was cool (nothing worse that pre-cooked pasta). My husband's pasta sauce (Pappardelle with short rib ragout) was mediocre - I've tasted much better. It is a cute little restaurant which, with a few improvements, could be a solid go-to restaurant."

  • "This small gem serves food making it worthy of being rated one of the top 5 for Italian in NYC. What great food."

  • "My husband and I love going to this tiny wonderful place. Great food, service and Ambience. We really like the owner Mario, he stays on top of every thing. I totally like that they will customize your dinner."

  • "The food at Tiella has always been excellent. The staff are attentive. They feature dishes that are not found on many Italian menus in New York--gallette made with chick peas, for example. I think that the owners are from Bologna, or maybe Modena--somewhere in the area of great and rich Italian, but not too far north for pasta. Despite the fact that is small, the noise level has never been too high to enjoy the meal. "

  • "We all enjoyed our meal at Tiella. I would definitely recommend it. I was a little surprised at my appetizer that was special for the evening - a caprezzi salad. I thought it was to bechopped tomatos and cheese that was marinated. It was just sliced cheese and tomatoes with some olive oil on top. My pasta entree also had a lot of seafood but it was too finely chopped for my taste although it was very good."

  • "The menu has grown since our last visit, but the cooking seems to have suffered. It remains an off the beaten track, affordable Italien, and some of the dishes are excellent. "

  • "Between storefronts, Tiell is a smallish, well run Italian restaurant."

  • "The reviews brought me and my friend to Tiella and it didn't disappoint. It's starts with their great tasting bread, something I usually discount when I evaluate a restaurant. I ordered the Halibut special in parchment with string beans, capers, etc. It was light and substantial at the same time. My friend ordered the Bronzini. She loved it. I had the kale salad and it was a great combination of fresh greens, cheese and a wonderful salad dressing. My friend had the salad with goat cheese and loved every bite. My cappuccino was perfect. It's pricey but I didn't feel that I overspent. I couldn't go there frequently but I don't have to wait for a special occasion to enjoy the food and accommodating but not overly solicitous service."

  • "Had a great experience when I went here with a group of 6 ladies on a Wednesday night for dinner. I had made the reservation ahead of time, which I would recommend for groups. It's a small place but they did a great job accommodating our group. Everything was ready to go even before our reservation time and the place was otherwise full. I had been here before and this time tried different dishes and still contend that this is the best Italian food in the neighborhood! Highly recommended."

  • "Tiella is slighly off our beaten path but it is a charming, tiny place to enjoy wonderful pasta. Our service was attentive but not oppressive. We enjoy our evening and will return soon."

  • "We were recommended to Tiella as excellent Neopolitan cuisine. The individual pizza had cold ricotta on it which did not seem appropriate. The pasta dish was average. Somewhat disappointed, but the service and attitude of the waiters and owner made up for the average food. Would try again."

  • "The food was incredible! Very fresh prepared gourmet not overpowered by sauces! Stuffed calamari was delicious! Pizza appetizers incredible. Service very attentive and friendly. Very small restaurant so "intimate" setting."

  • "First off… Food was delicious and very well prepared… Low ratings have to do with a staff of three in the front of the house that seemed very distracted within some sort of quarrel… The space being so small that despite their efforts to mute their issues it was a vibe that permeated our experience… WIne orders were slow to come out and all visits to the table were cloaked in futile attempts to cover up an overall angry tone. At these prices we should not have felt as if we had stumbled into a private dispute. WOuld be willing to try again as the food was very good."

  • "I still can't believe it took me an entire year to discover this place since I moved to the neighborhood. Visitors requested Italian food and I was determined to treat them to something fresh and authentic with a great ambiance. We received just that. The waiter was very attentive, and kept our wine chilled and flowing. After declaring that we were splitting certain plates between us, the chef took the initiative to separately plate our respective portions. Menu highlights include the grilled octopus and the tiramisu. It was a very special time. We will be back soon!"

  • "FINALLY -- an Italian restaurant in the area that goes above spaghetti and meatballs to serve up a truly fit-for-foodies menu. Even the most basic dish -- the tielle (mini-pizzas) they are named for -- are simply amazing. The wine list is not huge but it is interesting, and if you order a glass, they bring the bottle out to the table and let you taste it before you have to commit. The small, but neatly organized, clean and charming space (and, side note, very elegant restroom) and excellent, welcoming service mean I will be back every chance I get. I even took my two young kids here on a Sunday @5:00 -- the place was not full and they were extremely attentive to my children (though note space is too limited for big strollers)."

  • "no real ambience. no bar. was facing the kitchen door at the back. calamari was really good. Lamb too salty and a MASSIVE portion. Wife's cod was pretty tasteless. Nice staff though. drinks were good. might have been better if we were up at the front of the restaurant but the last few tables suck for the party facing the kichen"

  • "Got there 15 min. past my reservation time only to find out that my reservations was taken off or never made it in the first place. Not sure who to blame here, but decided to walk away after a table that was practically in the kitchen. Host couldn't care less. Wonder how the service would be, given this type of attitude!"

  • "Super reviews on Trip Advisor and a 26 rating by Zagats convinced us to give this place a try. We were seated immediately, though waited for bread, despite asking. A good wine list and interesting menu, reasonably priced. We were seated 1/3 the way deep into the restaurant, but every time the door opened there was an uncomfortable cold draft. Very hard surfaces caused terrible noise and echoes making conversation for three difficult. We shared eggplant parmagiana for the table which was excellent. Salads were very tasty, but fairly ordinary. All of our entrees were disappointing. The cod special was soaked in tomato sauce making it hard to taste the delicate fish. The risotto was meh. The pappardelle pasta was bland. Overall: eh."

  • "Always looking for a new neighborhood restaurnant to try and this was a find. The food was great as was the service. We will be going back to try more dishes."

  • "We ate dinner here because we were staying in a hotel nearby and needed to eat dinner early before we headed to Lincoln Center for a concert. Got a reservation the day of - no problem. The food was excellent (and we had just returned from Italy, so our Italian food palates were finely tuned). It is a tiny restaurant and for those of us looking out onto First Ave at the Bed Bath Beyond building, the view was not great (next time I would ask for a seat farther back so I couldn't see out) Only complaint was the hostess/waitress. She was very unfriendly and downright unpleasant actually. And as our table was in front near the entrance, she was basically standing there watching us the whole time - that said, the servers were lovely people."

  • "Tiella is one of the five best Italian restaurants in New York. It would be superb if it were in Italy. And I do not know who the other four would be."

  • "Used to love this restaurant as it was unique and delicious and now it's declined to mediocre. Food was bland as it used to be outstanding. I think their Zagat rating has gone to their heads as they don't have to try hard anymore. Their sister restaurant (Gran Gusto) in Boston also started off stellar and has declined rapidly. Such a shame as really used to enjoy going to both restaurants."

  • "There are not a lot of choices for fine dining in this neighborhood, and happy to find Tiella. My second time there in 5 months, both times booked only 24 hrs in advance, not sure how they have open reservations at that point, as the food is great and it's got a cozy ambiance. A great alternative to Felice up the street, which doesn't take reservations and is usually full."

  • "This is a small Italian place with truly excellent food, and servers who are enthusiastic, genuine, and helpful. The decor isn't terribly compelling, but the food is. We're about to move to Manhattan, and we see this as one of our future go-to places."
    Dined on 11/27/2013
  • "It's a tiny place but the food was very good. Homemade pastas were excellent, especially the Spaghetti and the Rigatoni with sausage. The Tiella (sm pizza) we tried was just ok (I think it was the smoked mozzarella and cherry tomatoes -needed salt) and the Branzino special was very good as well. If you get a table toward the front you will be cold from the door opening, but other than that, a very good neighborhood place."

  • "Tiella is an undiscovered gem! Everything is made on the spot to your order. The service is warm and attentive, the food speaks the flavors of Italy. They know what they're doing. Whatever you do, go!"

  • "The tiella's were fabulous - which I had more of them. The pasta was very good and fresh and different saunce then you would typically see on a menu. Didn't love the scallop appetizer - though it was a bit overcooked but the flavors were interesting. The staff was excellent."
    Dined on 11/11/2013
  • "I have dined here ever since the restaurant opened and have found the food to be consistently excellent, especially the tiella - the small pizzas served as starters. The restaurant is small but the noise level is pleasant and you do not really notice the other diners. The wine list is sufficient for me as I am not an expert and I can always find a good wine at a reasnabe price. I woud recommend this restaurant strongly, just book in advance!"

  • "It's a small restaurant, but very cozy and perfectly lit. So many interesting things on the menu that I had a hard time choosing. Everything everyone had at my table (3 of us) could not have been prepared better. A great surprising find/addition to the neighborhood. In addition, cocktail list was fun, and wine list was good."
