A word from Tico
Tico, Michael Schlow's award-winning venture, located at 222 Berkely St (corner of St James) is casual, fun, inviting, energized and energizing. The restaurant has a personal, somewhat eclectic, "found" feel, with lots of reclaimed wood and unusual pieces. Perfect for friends that want to share cool cocktails, plates of tasty, sometimes spicy food, while listening to great music, in a fast, uncomplicated restaurant that provides knowledgeable, quick, playful service.
The restaurant has an open kitchen with 6 stools right on the counter to watch all the action. It also boasts a large bar, dining room for 100, a chef's table, and a lush outdoor courtyard that features a fireplace, dining for 50, as well as some "soft" seating near the fire if guests wish to be outside for a drink or snack.

Loved it. Service was great! We had yummy sangaria and shared the tacos, small plates and an entree. Everything was great, but bacon tacos, cauliflower and mushroom quesadillas were great. We did not a change to try the spanish tortilla as they were out of it.

Excellent food. Neither Mexican nor Tex-Mex, rather imaginative Latin-inspired. The various tacos are all good tastes and well-prepared. The turkey/white bean chili is fine; and the cabbage-based salad is very unusual and very good. Service was not polished, but was pleasant and eager to please.

The service in the beginning was very slow, especially for drinks and then for food. At times we felt we didnt even have a server. Once ordered, drinks and food were served promptly. They will do well in that location. A little pricey for lunch, without alcohol it was $110 just for water and soda, a few apps, lunch and coffee.

  • Tasty but loud and dark
    OpenTable Diner Since 2005
    Dined on 3/5/2011
The food here was very tasty. I am sure it must have been beautiful too. Seriously, the place is so dimly lit, I had to hold one of the tiny table candles right up to my menu to barely make out the words. You could not see the food. You could see enough to find it on your plate, but I wouldn't be able to tell you what colors things were. And I am relatively young with good eyesight. Service was good when they were around. Overall they were very very slow.To be fair, I think it might be that they couldn't find our table in the darkness. It is hard to hear, even slightly away from the bar, music is rather loud. If going again, (which I might) I would request a table by the windows, where it would be quieter. & benefit from street light

The hostess was fine. Our waiter was sour and never once checked in to find out if we wanted anything else, or even just to ask if everything was fine. He was absolutely cold and unfriendly. The decor is a little haphazzard... The crazy graffiti on the columns is very distracting. The dark colors are not soothing, just dark. The feeling the place gives is cacophonic. Lastly, the food should be amazing for those prices, and so should the service. By the way, charging for extra soda is considered nickel and diming...I was absolutely astounded by this.

Extremely impressed and surprised with Tico's style, service and food. Menu is made up of tons of tapas and small plates (they recommend 2-3 per person), which is great for tasting and sharing. Everything was delictable by the way! Our waitress was extremely knowledgeable about the food, incredients and was overall very friendly. The atomoshpere was vibrant, classy and very fun which made you want to stay all night. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking to have a great night out with friends and will absolutely be returning soon.

Good Lunch Crowd. Place was busy and you could tell they were still getting used to things. Numerous errors on service - Waiter poured soup on the table and not the bowl on first try. Served dessert spoons for soup and soup spoons for dessert. Waiter got one main dish incorrect - had to wait some for new order. Took a long time for waiter to take dessert order - had to ask another server to get his attention and even after that took a bit. Food was good. I probably won't go back. Tico was a fun place to try but it still needs to work out its kinks. They only have a wine list, no cocktails. We had to ask our waitress 2x to see if the bartender would make us a margarita (it is a full bar). The tables were spaced apart yet every waiter/bus boy that passed us kicked both our chairs, and we were sitting across from one another. It's nice to have a dimly lit atmosphere, however, it was so dark that I could barely read the menu by candlelight. Food was good and I would come back to try the other small plates I didn't get to. Others please note that the bar was packed for the entire time we were there (good for business) and it looked like it was hard to get a drink. Be prepared to wait.

I was disappointed in Tico. It's clear they are a new restaurant and that all of their staff is new to the industry. We made a reservation and still had to wait 45 minutes for a table. They forgot to bring us bread and put in the wrong order, causing to wait until almost 10pm to have dinner. I am a vegetarian who loves going out for tapas - and who always finds plenty to eat - and ended up paying over $60 to have olives and cauliflower for dinner because I was tired of waiting so long, only to have them mess up my order - again. We were at the restaurant for 3 hours and I left hungry. They need to hire a manager, hosts, and wait staff who know what they're doing. I won't be going back any time soon.

8 of us went to Tico's on Sat night, sat at a great table round table and got a chance to sample everything... the avg price was $4-10 for these (typically enough for 6-8 of us to have a taste of each). Our favorites were spicy shrimp taco w bacon & avocado, pork with spicy cucumber, chicken a la plancha, BBQ shrimp with mango, and quesadilla w truffle salsa. The most memorable were the veggie dishes (and I'm a carnivore), but we loved the brussel sprouts w bacon, Cauliflower with creamy chipotle. Everything was very nicely seasoned and bursting with flavor! The only miss was the edamame taco, which lost me at the description. Margaritas were strong and tasty though I wish they had pitchers... bar scene was hopping-3 deep when we left.
