A word from Tico
Tico, Michael Schlow's award-winning venture, located at 222 Berkely St (corner of St James) is casual, fun, inviting, energized and energizing. The restaurant has a personal, somewhat eclectic, "found" feel, with lots of reclaimed wood and unusual pieces. Perfect for friends that want to share cool cocktails, plates of tasty, sometimes spicy food, while listening to great music, in a fast, uncomplicated restaurant that provides knowledgeable, quick, playful service.
The restaurant has an open kitchen with 6 stools right on the counter to watch all the action. It also boasts a large bar, dining room for 100, a chef's table, and a lush outdoor courtyard that features a fireplace, dining for 50, as well as some "soft" seating near the fire if guests wish to be outside for a drink or snack.

Diner Reviews
  • "Have been to Tico many times and have always loved the food. This past experience was notable due to the exceptional service we were given by Michael. I was out with a friend who I had not seen in a while so we lingered for some time after eating just to chat. Michael was infinitely patient with us, never once seeming annoyed as other servers might have been with that table that "just won't leave"! Only thing about Tico that could be perceived negatively is that the noise level is high. I actually like it though as I think it makes it more kid friendly...the louder the better!"

  • "Party of 8 for a casual business dinner. The food, drinks, and service were outstanding. Very friendly staff, which made for a great evening. I would highly recommend TICO!!!"

  • "I love TICO; it is great for groups, good for sharing; the food is mostly tapas style so its good if each person order 2-3 sides; its fun because you can try a bit of everything and very delicious! Also great drinks!"

  • "The food is outstanding. The service is very good. The soundtrack blaring from multiple speakers ruined the evening. Why rap and hip-hop? I asked the hostess if the music would continue like this all night. She said, "it's a very eclectic mix of songs". I could barely hear my dinner partner (we were at a table for two). I've had much better experiences there at lunch when the soundtrack is not as annoying."

  • "I have been to Tico twice in the last two weeks and I can say the same thing for each visit - the food was good, the service was horrific. It takes forever for you to get your servers attention because they have so many tables to watch over. One person takes drinks, one person takes food order, another brings your stuff, another checks in, another comes over to ask you if you want more food, and yet another takes your drink order - then someone totally different brings you the wrong drinks...and even with that many people waiting on you, it is impossible to get someone's attention! The food comes out within minutes of you ordering it...and you have to wait 20 minutes for a drink, which tastes like watered down lemonade (margaritas = bad)"

  • "Pluses: plates came out quickly, the cauliflower dish and the lobster & avocado tacos were great Minuses: service was inattentive (didn't remember our full order, didn't ask if we wanted to order more, didn't offer dessert or tell us that most of the desserts were not available anymore), the other dishes were just okay"

  • "We stopped in on whim one day while in Boston. Good food, nice servers but the best part was the little outdoor dining section. We sat in front of the outdoor fireplace and had drinks and lunch. It was great! The pork tacos and the pulled pork sandwich were very tasty. The tacos were a little small so if you are starving order two orders (four tacos altogether), but really good!"

  • "Went for lunch and got 5 different pairs of tacos (for 3 people). Food is pretty good, but just too small portions (hence ordering 10 tacos total). We all left hungry and with empty wallets. Definitely too pricy to make it a frequent lunch spot with friends or colleagues."

  • "We went to Tico with the kids for an early dinner. It was wonderful! We had several different small plates that we all devoured and even ordered some twice! The kids and I loved the crab tostada!!! And the pulled beef tacos we so delicious! The server was fun and knowledgable and we went with many of her suggestions and it resulted in an amazing night out for the family!"

  • "We had a group of ten and were originally seated in a table in the bar. The music was way too loud to hold conversation. We asked to be moved to a less noisy table in the dining room, by the window, and they did so without fuss. The wait staff was very friendly and accommodating and the food was great. The tapas menu was perfect for our large group as it was easy to order just the right amount of food and variety with a group where some arrived a little late and some had to leave a little early. After we moved our table, it was the perfect atmosphere for our large group and we would definitely plan to go there again."

  • "Love the small plates. dont even bother with entree. Load up on cauliflower, peppers, chorizo, tacos..etc. Great place for groups. "

  • "This was my fourth time at Tico and it has gone downhill every visit. The service was slow and the food was mediocore. We asked for our small plates to be staggered and this request was not honored. The waitress was not attentive. The duck tacos were dry and lacked flavor. Only the drinks were remarkable. We were there on a Sat night and the restaurant was not even half full. Not a good sign. I work nearby and will not be returning. "

  • "The menu was limited and they ran out of two dishes already by an 8pm dinner. Wine appeared to be served only by the bottle. The food was okay, but very small portions. It's kind of a cool atmosphere, but loud. We had a few different servers, and none of them were personable, but we got what we needed when we neededit for the most part. "

  • "We went for dinner early before theatre on a Friday. Food was quite good and interesting, sort of tapas style with lots of small plates to share, and service was quick and friendly. There was a very lively bar scene, which seemed likely to get quite loud later. I would go back, but not much later in the evening. "

  • "Tico had a great environment. This is such a great restaurant for groups. They have lounge seating on the edges of the restaurant. "

  • "inventive list, and everything was good, but just not great. the portions are small even for tapas and i left wanting a slice of pizza. still, the things that made it in my mouth were good, but there's certainly better tapas to be had in boston. the traditional marg tasted like it came from a mix but their skinny spicy marg was much better."

  • "Every dish was more tasty than the next - a great find for mexican fusion. The crab torta was probably the most delicious dish we had but definitely too small for the price - it's so hard not to eat more of something so good. Our server was awesome, always available but not intrusive; this was especially impressive because she was managing some very large party tables and still able to cater to a table of two. Next time I'd like to try the tasting menu to get a full experience. Wonderful restaurant!"

  • "Made a reservation for 5 at 8pm. After arriving on time and being told that we'd have to wait 10-15 minutes, we went to the bar. After waiting 15 minutes to get drinks at the bar, we go back to see if our table is ready at the front desk. After waiting until 845, we ask the hostess if our table is ready again. Nothing. We're finally seated at 9pm and have a server come up to us in a timely manner to take drink orders, only to be followed by another server who thought she had our table. Once we had our drinks and ordered food things were ok until we didn't actually get served all of our food but received the bill and had a waiter clear our table. Needless to say despite good food (what we had of it at least) we won't be returning."

  • "Tico has an energetic environment, great tapas and margaritas. I went with a small group of friends and everyone really enjoyed the food. We were all pretty hungry and the service was a little slow, but besides this, we had a great time. "

  • "The food was creative, varied and excellent. Our server, Michael, was knowledgeable and attentive. A few small plates plus a shared salad and entree. All excellent. Left full and satisfied in every way."

  • "We brought an out-of-town guest because the food has always been so good when we visit for lunch. The food didn't disappoint; it was very good. But the table was so loud it was difficult to have a comfortable dinner conversation. THe management should wait to turn up the music until the dinner crowd is over and the bar scene is fully in swing. "

  • "We decided to check this place out since we were heading to the Opera house and wanted to do something new. Stuck to the small plates over the entrees. The roasted cauliflower was the best! Highly recommend it. Everything, including the drinks, was very good overall. Service was consistent/solid. I would definitely go here again."

  • "Overall we thought the food was good. We had a party of 4 and shared 8 small plates/tapas. Garlic shrimp was just okay, but could have used more flavor/garlic. Very good plates were the duck tacos, mac-n-cheese and risotto with chorizo. The server(s) were rather unenthusiastic and borderline rude. We had a reservation for 7:45, so the restaurant was quite busy, but still no excuse. When we reminded our server about our drink order, after 20 minutes, she seemed quite annoyed and said that she had to take orders from the other tables around us first. Just a quick apology for it taking so long, would have sufficed."

  • "We booked on open table, got there for a 6:30 reservation. they gave us seats in the bar area even thought there were tables in the main area available - they said, we have reservations for those tables - larger group. They gave us a very a small table for 4. we ordered about 14 dishes and they began to bring out every dish all at once. We had no room on table and had to find the waitress to tell her. when we commented about all the food coming out at once, they took back a couple of dishes. When they returned later with the food, it was cold. unprofessional. In my view, we were being rushed through dinner to get the bar area open. As soon as the table behind us finished, they removed the table and chairs. Not worth the effort."

  • "This place was obviously quite popular, and the tapas dishes were innovative and outstanding. However, the "bar crowd" was loud and inebriated. The servers seemed intent upon catering to the big drinkers. After about 20 minutes without a seeing a server, it was clear that I would be more likely to have beer spilled on me that to be served. After pointing that out to the hostess, the servers were more attentive."

  • "We had an 8pm reservation, and didn't end up getting seated until 9:00 PM. Our waiter seemed very scattered and disorganized, not really knowing what was or was not included in the various tasting menus offered. He seemed to push the more expensive one, but didn't know what was included in the lesser tier. The food was very tasty, but the service and hostesses need a LOT of work."

  • "I took a friend here for his first night in boston and we definitely had a good time. The food is good although expensive and the drinks are wonderful. The service however is terrible, do slow and extremely inattentive. We sat with empty bar glasses for ten minutes and had to flag our server down for food"

  • "We tried Tico again because we read that it had a new chef and menu. We were seated promptly, but we had to ask for the table to be wiped again because of the sticky blotches. We started with drinks, which were uneven (one was too strong to drink without ordering another juice to dilute it). There was some bread, with oil that had something of a bitter taste. We got a lot of small plates, and also the salmon entree. The salmon was the best, and the ceviche dishes were pretty good. We made a good try at eating the fried calamari, but it was just impossible because it was overcooked (like fried rubber bands) and fried in over-used oil. They took that one off the bill, but we were still shocked at the total. Not worth it, go elsewhere."

  • "Hasn't lost a step. Tacos are fantastic, all freshly made with great ingredients, and served hot. Fantastic selection of tequilas, and margaritas made with fresh squeezed juice. Cool spot, bar is happening on warm nights late in the week."

  • "Not the usual fare. Interesting tapas choices, mostly of high quality, excellent service (those who complain about servers ought to learn how to talk to servers). Decent wines, reasonably priced. Go for dinner early if you don't like noise, go late if you do. And yes, it is a bit pricey, but worth it...way more food pleasure for the money than the typical boring and overpriced steak place. (If you like steak places or your idea of a good meal is huge portions, you won't like this place. Go chew on cow somewhere else.)"

  • "The tacos are a little light, even for a lunch; the sandwiches are enormous. The quality of the food never disappoints. This is a great place to go with good friends, order several small plates, and try a little of everything. Highly recommend the lobster and avocado tacos."

  • "My parents and I went to Tico for dinner. Our appetizers were good, and came out fast. However it was strange that we had two waitresses taking orders from our table the entire time. My dad and I each got the burger. We both ordered it medium rare and they both came out medium well. They tasted like meatloaf. We did not send them back; instead we politely informed the waitress, showed her that there was no pink whatsoever, and she told her manager who took them off the bill. Our entire experience was less than okay, with one waitress very pleasant and the other standoffish."

  • "Went to Tico for quick meal before a show as we only had 45min to eat. Service and food were fast. Food was overall average. Very expensive for the tiny bites we received. Left the restaurant hungry after $100. Chicken skewers are a ripoff. Shrimp taco was tasty. Kale salad average. Brussel sprouts and cauliflower average. Overall service was good, food average, price outrageous."
