A word from Tico
Tico, Michael Schlow's award-winning venture, located at 222 Berkely St (corner of St James) is casual, fun, inviting, energized and energizing. The restaurant has a personal, somewhat eclectic, "found" feel, with lots of reclaimed wood and unusual pieces. Perfect for friends that want to share cool cocktails, plates of tasty, sometimes spicy food, while listening to great music, in a fast, uncomplicated restaurant that provides knowledgeable, quick, playful service.
The restaurant has an open kitchen with 6 stools right on the counter to watch all the action. It also boasts a large bar, dining room for 100, a chef's table, and a lush outdoor courtyard that features a fireplace, dining for 50, as well as some "soft" seating near the fire if guests wish to be outside for a drink or snack.

But the table was so loud it was difficult to have a comfortable dinner conversation. THe management should wait to turn up the music until the dinner crowd is over and the bar scene is fully in swing. "

  • "We decided to check this place out since we were heading to the Opera house and wanted to do something new. Stuck to the small plates over the entrees. The roasted cauliflower was the best! Highly recommend it. Everything, including the drinks, was very good overall. Service was consistent/solid. I would definitely go here again."

  • "Overall we thought the food was good. We had a party of 4 and shared 8 small plates/tapas. Garlic shrimp was just okay, but could have used more flavor/garlic. Very good plates were the duck tacos, mac-n-cheese and risotto with chorizo. The server(s) were rather unenthusiastic and borderline rude. We had a reservation for 7:45, so the restaurant was quite busy, but still no excuse. When we reminded our server about our drink order, after 20 minutes, she seemed quite annoyed and said that she had to take orders from the other tables around us first. Just a quick apology for it taking so long, would have sufficed."

  • "We booked on open table, got there for a 6:30 reservation. they gave us seats in the bar area even thought there were tables in the main area available - they said, we have reservations for those tables - larger group. They gave us a very a small table for 4. we ordered about 14 dishes and they began to bring out every dish all at once. We had no room on table and had to find the waitress to tell her. when we commented about all the food coming out at once, they took back a couple of dishes. When they returned later with the food, it was cold. unprofessional. In my view, we were being rushed through dinner to get the bar area open. As soon as the table behind us finished, they removed the table and chairs. Not worth the effort."

  • "This place was obviously quite popular, and the tapas dishes were innovative and outstanding. However, the "bar crowd" was loud and inebriated. The servers seemed intent upon catering to the big drinkers. After about 20 minutes without a seeing a server, it was clear that I would be more likely to have beer spilled on me that to be served. After pointing that out to the hostess, the servers were more attentive."

  • "We had an 8pm reservation, and didn't end up getting seated until 9:00 PM. Our waiter seemed very scattered and disorganized, not really knowing what was or was not included in the various tasting menus offered. He seemed to push the more expensive one, but didn't know what was included in the lesser tier. The food was very tasty, but the service and hostesses need a LOT of work."

  • "I took a friend here for his first night in boston and we definitely had a good time. The food is good although expensive and the drinks are wonderful. The service however is terrible, do slow and extremely inattentive. We sat with empty bar glasses for ten minutes and had to flag our server down for food"

  • "We tried Tico again because we read that it had a new chef and menu. We were seated promptly, but we had to ask for the table to be wiped again because of the sticky blotches. We started with drinks, which were uneven (one was too strong to drink without ordering another juice to dilute it). There was some bread, with oil that had something of a bitter taste. We got a lot of small plates, and also the salmon entree. The salmon was the best, and the ceviche dishes were pretty good. We made a good try at eating the fried calamari, but it was just impossible because it was overcooked (like fried rubber bands) and fried in over-used oil. They took that one off the bill, but we were still shocked at the total. Not worth it, go elsewhere."

  • "Not the usual fare. Interesting tapas choices, mostly of high quality, excellent service (those who complain about servers ought to learn how to talk to servers). Decent wines, reasonably priced. Go for dinner early if you don't like noise, go late if you do. And yes, it is a bit pricey, but worth it...way more food pleasure for the money than the typical boring and overpriced steak place. (If you like steak places or your idea of a good meal is huge portions, you won't like this place. Go chew on cow somewhere else.)"

  • "My parents and I went to Tico for dinner. Our appetizers were good, and came out fast. However it was strange that we had two waitresses taking orders from our table the entire time. My dad and I each got the burger. We both ordered it medium rare and they both came out medium well. They tasted like meatloaf. We did not send them back; instead we politely informed the waitress, showed her that there was no pink whatsoever, and she told her manager who took them off the bill. Our entire experience was less than okay, with one waitress very pleasant and the other standoffish."

  • "Went to Tico for quick meal before a show as we only had 45min to eat. Service and food were fast. Food was overall average. Very expensive for the tiny bites we received. Left the restaurant hungry after $100. Chicken skewers are a ripoff. Shrimp taco was tasty. Kale salad average. Brussel sprouts and cauliflower average. Overall service was good, food average, price outrageous."

  • "We had a group of 7, celebrating a birthday. We all enjoyed the ambiance and the food. Service was good, we got a variety of dishes to share and liked them all. I know that some other reviewers found the music too loud but for us, the noise level was fine and the music added to the evening. We all agreed that it was a restaurant we would be happy to return to."

  • "I recently had lunch at Tico with three of my cousins. It was an ideal meeting spot since two were coming from the North Shore, one from the West of the city and one from South of the city. We had a reservation and our table was ready when we got there. I ordered the shrimp tacos and the waiter asked if I wanted two or three, without explaining that they were small. Three of the dishes came with french fries which my cousins never had a chance to finish, because the waiter was in a hurry to clear the table and removed two of the servings of fries when he cleared the lunch plates. The sandwiches were gone, the fries weren't. We were eating them slowly. They were delicious, I should say. Overall, the experience was good, not more than that."

  • "The small plates here are very, very good. It can get a little pricey because you tend to end up ordering more than you planned on due to the portion sizes. We got a pitcher of margaritas and it was nice to actually taste the tequila - some restaurants will skimp on it when they're serving it this way. The noise and crowded dining area is a bit challenging - might help if they broke up the room a little bit with dividers and/or some booths, but the food and drink are worth it. Ambiance is very nice too."

  • "Had reservation for me & my gf cuz we heard great things. Showed up 15 mins early & was told to have a drink until the table was ready. We landed stool seats at the bar. Asked the bartender for a corona & he said he didn't have any when there were a few behind him. Not making a scene, I settled for a bud. Later, host says seats are ready. They were the same high stool seats but at another section. We thought we'd actually get seated at a real table especially after getting reservations & showing up early. I was turned off by that. We stayed at our bar seats, ordered food. I would go again if invited by friends, but I wouldn't go by my own choice due to that poor initial service for people who actually took the time to reserve a table."

  • "Went on "quiet" midweek night. Food was inventive and delicious. Service was excellent and attentive. Nonetheless, I'm not sure I will go again because the music was DEAFENING. We couldn't hear the staff describe specials. We couldn't hear each other. We couldn't hear ourselves. We asked twice (nicely) to have the music turned down. First time it went down incrementally but seemed to creep back up. Second time, we were told that this ear-blasting noise was "part of the concept" of the restaurant. Given the fact that by this time we were one of two parties left in the dining room, this seemed both inexplicably unaccommodating and unpleasantly corrective. I can handle loud, but this was absurdly--not "vibrant scene"--loud. SO disappointing."

They had a great wine list that was reasonably priced with plenty of different options, as well as various beer choices and an entire list dedicated to tequilas! The atmosphere was friendly and the ambiance was energetic and fun! The service was timely, and our waitress was very friendly and most helpful when it came to recommending dishes to try. This is one of the best restaurants I've eaten at in Boston and I would highly recommend it!"

The atmosphere is energetic and it's pretty loud by the bar. It has a dark, lounge vibe. I didn't love the Mac n creae but everything else was delicious."

  • "Chose Tico after it came highly recommended by two people who live in Boston. The atmosphere was exactly what we were looking for and after dinner we didn't want to leave so we just moved over to the bar. Being in a group of 4, we chose to order rounds of tapas and share. Everything we ordered was delicious but what stood out the most to me was the Two Textured Beef Taco. Words cannot describe how amazing this dish was. Other highly notable favorites: ceviche, grilled octopus, and muscles. Oh! And I cannot remember the actual name of the cocktail but the spicy one with ghost chilis was by the THE BEST cocktail I have ever had! I cannot wait to go back!!"
