A word from Three Restaurant & Bar - FKA Astaria
Open and inviting. Innovative and energetic. Playful surprises are found throughout the menu, as well as the restaurant itself. The menu has been designed to give you options, is perfect for sharing and you are encouraged to order however the mood strikes you, so don’t be shy about ordering more of… Well, anything. Salads and pastas created with greens and veggies from the rooftop garden should please locavores. While burger lovers will appreciate the balance of the house grind that blends brisket, short rib and sirloin. Between bites be sure to take a look at the beautiful, “Living Wall”. A wall of plants and herbs living and growing inside the restaurant itself. Take a peak at the “Peninsula Room”, an homage to the Hotel Benjamin Franklin located directly in front the exhibition kitchen.
The beverage program takes a backseat to none. Eight rotating craft beers, hand-crafted cocktails, and a first-class wine program.

Diner Reviews
  • "After my last week's bad experience here (which was an anomaly for Three), the operations manager apologized profusely when I came in this week and he even comped part of my dinner to make up for the bad experience last week. Thanks! The experience tonight was great. I had a fabulous cosmo and I tried the blueberry lemon drop (yum!...this might be my new drink here!). The steak and shoestring fries were great as always. My dad was with me and he had the cod; he loved it. He also had the blueberry upside down cake and loved that. The ambiance was great, the server was fabulous, and all of the other staff were great. This will always be a neighborhood gem and I think everyone should come here. I love spending Friday nights here!"

  • "This is a pleasant surprise...same owners as when it was Astaria but the food is MUCH better. I have been there 3 times now and the food is consistently excellent. Try the lamb burger!"

  • "I love Three. I think more people should go here. It's amazing. The drinks, the service, the atmosphere/ambiance, the food, and even the decorations are all amazing."

  • "I order the one of two things every time I come here because they're always so amazing. The food is great. There is a lot of variety on the menu. It can be a little pricey but it's all worth it. The portions might seem small but they aren't. They're wicked filling and delicious."

  • "We come here every Friday night and it's always great. The hostess, servers, bus boys, bartenders etc. know us. The sweet potato chips, skirt steak, shoestring fries, drinks etc. are always amazing. I love how they have seasonal menus as well. Can't wait for the summer one!"

  • "My family goes to Three EVERY Fri. night. We rarely have problems, except for tonight (a Thursday). I ordered the chicken club (which I've had twice before) & it came out as the fried chicken club. I told the waitress (Stefanie?) I wanted the regular grilled chicken club & she started to argue with me (& still charged me for fried). She said the main chicken club is fried. I'm sorry, but 1) I've ordered this by saying "chicken club" before & it's come out fine, & 2) if I had wanted a FRIED chicken club, I would have said fried. If I have to designate that I want the chicken club not to be fried, & if I can't just say "chicken club" to get it not fried, then the menu should be updated to indicate this or the waitress should clarify."

  • "Girls Sunday brunch. Waiter was helpful and provided good info. Brunch food was good and the restaurant was lively with a mix of people including families. Nice place to have brunch. Banana pecan pancakes was the standout in our group of various plates we ordered. Oh and the bacon bits!"

  • "Saturday night was our first time at Three. Really enjoyed it and cannot wait to come back again soon! Food was really good, yet playful. Shared some great appetizers with the husband. Overall, thought the restaurant was very reasonably priced, in a great location, with good service. We look forward to coming back soon for brunch and future dinners!"

  • "I've liked Three since it was Astaria. Three's menu is adventurous and contemporary. I really like the small/medium plate idea since it lets you sample several things without getting stuffed. I ordered the lamb kabobs (again) and they were just as tasty as the first time. The carrot soup special was creamy, carroty, and just a tad spicy. Very versatile--nice for a romantic evening OR a business dinner."

  • "Staff very friendly, trying to do the right thing but there seems to be too few servers or disorganization among the staff. Main dish came before the soup, drinks took forever and the second round came after all the meals were served. Food was very good."

  • "We had a few appetizers that were good. Enjoyed our cocktails too. But we were let done by the service and the main courses. I had the fried chicken which was cooked well but had no flavor, including the mash potatoes & gravy. I put salt on everything, as it didn't seem to have any, and I never do that. The salt helped a bit but it was a huge let down. Similar flavor issue with the hamburger, sandwich & fish."

  • "We had out of town guests and they absolutely love this place...would not consider going elsewhere. It is the one restaurant that I consider taking my friends. The food is consistently good and the wait staff attentive"

  • "We have come to Three several times and have enjoyed the menu selections. It seemed to be a perfect place for Father's Day dinner, and it was, kind of... We were seated promptly and greeted warmly. After ordering, food took a LONG time to arrive. At least 45 minutes, maybe a bit longer. There was no check ins with the waitstaff, no explanation of the delay and refills on the drinks were few and far between. When the server did offer a refill of iced tea, I thought she meant it would arrive in a few moments, not 20 minutes. When the food did finally arrive it was tasty, fresh and well prepared. We really have enjoyed our meals at Three and will return. We just hope that service and wait times can be tightened up."

  • "My wife and I ate here the other night for the first time based on an OpenTable list of area hot spots. It was delicious from the "stogies" to the mini tacos, salmon bites and bacon bits. Everything was terrific (especially the peanut butter ice cream sandwich for dessert) and we'll definitely be back. Our server was very good too and it turns out she's one of the owners. Great atmosphere, lively but not too loud. Great all around experience."

  • "Wow, this place was packed! It was way too loud to have a normal conversation with my guest. It was like sitting in a giant and rambunctious bar, not a restaurant. If I wanted a bar scene, I'd go to a bar... It doesn't help that their bar spans the length of the entire restaurant without any dividing walls or separation to spare diners the earache. Thank goodness the menu was decently varied and food was fresh and tasty but it will be hard to get up and go there again because of the 'party-like' atmosphere in which half the tables were filled with loud children and the other half with drunken college kids. If you are hard of hearing or don't mind yelling through dinner then this place could be fine for you. "

  • "We were huge fans of Astaria and are now huge fans of Three! Eleni was our waitress and we couldn't ask for anyone better! The food was excellent and we plan on coming back on a regular basis. We loved the sweet potato chips. What a unique idea instead of bread. Prices were excellent as well."

  • "Wild mushroom stogies are excellent and bursting with flavor, including the sauce that accompanies. In contrast to the Brie poppers which were bland -- not much cheese flavor -- and were accompanied by a cloyingly sweet fig jam. Blended margaritas were extremely tart and pretty light on the tequila. Service was very good but the noise level made conversation difficult. The restaurant was packed on a Sunday night."

  • "I love the fact that Three accepts reservations until 9:15pm. It's great when you get home from work late. Ate here at 8:45pm at night on a Friday and had the grilled chicken club. I had them hold a few of the pieces of food that come on the club and they were very nice about it. The sandwich was delicious. The people with me had the skirt steak and the lamb burger. The person who ate the lamb burger liked it with regular onions on it; he said the onions that normally come with it wouldn't taste good on it because of the sauce on it. Overall, the food and service were great!"

  • "Love Three! Went here twice in 1 weekend (with different people). The service was great and the food was made very quickly. The drinks were great and everyone remembered me from the night before which was nice. I had the skirt steak and a cosmo. Delicious. My friend had the special pizza (artichoke, bacon etc.). She had never been to Three before and loved both the pizza and the free sweet potato chips. "

  • "We enjoyed the food we had for lunch at Three, but the service was not up to the standards set at previous visits. The server seemed distracted and failed at routine tasks such as making sure we had the tableware for the food, refilling our drinks and bringing us our tab when it was clear we were ready to leave. This was not just once, but happened multiple times. "

  • "We went for dinner on Friday night. It was reasonably crowded but we didn't have to wait. The decor is nice, the service was attentive but not overly so. Decent value for money. The food was good, not something to rave over but definitely worth our time and money. I'd say a solid B overall. I had the gnocchi with skirt steak, my husband had skirt steak balsamico. No appetizers or desserts for us, though they did have a few interesting options. Maybe next time. A very good downtown San Mateo find. We spent $70, including tax and tip. "

  • "We recently went as a group.. service started out very attentive, once restaurant filled up it was hard to get a hold of the server.. food was delicious. Wild mushroom stogies are definitely a hit! Salmon bites and the skirt steak are incredible, tender and yummy. Drinks were hit and miss.. several of us had the mango mojito and it was inconsistently prepared. Not sure if different people made it. The Presbyterian and the ST Germain Collins were really good. "

  • "We were excited to try Three for the first time since it's transformation. We liked the updated decor and new menu. Things started off well with Brie poppers and the house chips- yum! Then the issues started. My Beet/citrus salad was actually mostly arugula with sonly 4 wedges of orange- not as described. My husband's salad and entree was hugely delayed by a computer glich with the price fixe menu. They were very apologetic and didn't charge us for his meal, but I wish they had notified us sooner about the extent of the delay. It also took 10 mins to remove a charge from the bill for a drink that never came. Our toddler was a complete mess by that point. We will consider trying them again- but avoid any special occasion items next time!"

  • "This is only my 2nd time at Three as I used to go to Astaria often. Just had a burger and the meat was good - nothing special on the bun. Ordered a salad rather than frys - had blue cheese on it which I don't like at all, and the lettuce didn't look all that fresh"

  • "Because I am part of the "older" crowd, I am less likely to recommend this restaurant to my friends because it is very noisy. I found the menu selections over extended with few traditional items or just "regular" food. The service was outstanding, the best I've had in a long time. I wish I had the server's name. He was great. There is a tech college in the old hotel which I think Three feeds and soon they will offer breakfast. "

  • "The restaurant is trying to be the fun local hangout for food and drink. The problem is that it's neither special food nor a good value. Dishes attempt to be creative, but fall into the "ordinary" category. Not bad, but not yummy either. When you're thinking, "hey, let's go out to dinner!" you think of getting something special or different, and that's just not what this place is about. When you see the bill - $90 for two, you think, "Did I get $90 worth of pleasure?" and the answer is no. The people are nice, service good, the ambiance bright and informal, and nothing bad, but alas, this is not a place for us to return to. "

  • "Made reservation and that was a good thing because it was busy. Buffet was great - eggs benedict, bacon, ham, fruit, steak, bagels, salmon, etc - nice selection. Separate table with beautiful and delicious desserts. Good service and not too crowded. Nice open kitchen - very clean. Would definitely return for brunch. Excellent cappuchino too!"

  • "Had dinner to celebrate a birthday. Service was excellent. All entrees were tasty and well prepared. The Gnocc N Cheese was SO delicious. The gnocchi was light and the cheese sauce was cheesy, but not too heavy. Hubby and I shared fried chicken and cod with risotto. The cod was a bit overcooked and not the freshest. However, the risotto was perfect and flavorful. The Three Wine was an interesting combination of three whites. I can't remember what they were but it went nicely with entrees. The bread pudding with caramel sauce was a wonderful way to end the meal. The servicing portions were very generous so we had lots of food to take home for another meal. Definitely will be returning."

  • "My family looked forward to a delicious brunch, sad to say this restaurant came up short . Upon checking in the hostess was unfriendly & carried an attitude. Looking around the restaurant I saw a three tables put together in the middle of the restaurant that offered some food selections. I asked if there was more options & I was told that there was a dessert table in the back. It was just very disappointing. After reading reviews the night before warning about the lack of service, it was true. Felt that the busboys were more caring than the servers. Saw management & servers laughing it in front of the bar while the busboys rushed around to make sure customers were happy. Won't be back & recommend spending your money elsewhere."

  • "I've been to Three multiple times and the food never ceases to amaze me. The steak, the different kinds of fries, the burgers, the lamb kebabs, and more are all great. The drinks are average (Vault 164 has better drinks), but they're still decent. The service is a hit or miss; it depends who your waiter is and where you're sitting. The past 2 times I've been at Three I've had the same waiter and his service hasn't been very good. He disappears, is slow, and is judgmental if you order more than 1 alcoholic beverage (which he really shouldn't be since his tip will be higher if you do and the restaurant gets more money). He also lacks basic waiter/waitress skills (such as asking if you want another when you finish a drink)."

  • "Given a spacious and comfortable table for our party of 7 and the waitstaff was very attentive and accommodating. Drinks, coffee, juice etc. came out right away. Appetizers/small bite plates were delicious, but not cleared prior to our entrees arriving. Everyone loved their food. Only complaint was it was extremely loud... Extremely. We were yelling at each other to be heard. Two other large parties were sitting near by, having a great time too, but the noise was something else... Would go back to this restaurant again, but will try to get a quieter location."

  • "I love Three. I've been here 3 times for dinner and 1 time for brunch and this by far was one of my favorite experiences. The Bloody Valentine drink was amazing. I also ordered the skirt steak balsamic with the shoestring fries. It was amazing! The service was pretty good (a little slow at first, but it got better as the night went on). The food was great. The atmosphere/ambiance is great as well. Love it here!"

  • "Seated right away with reservation. Server took a little while to appear but once the food came out, she checked back often. My only complaint was when I called the restaurant to say we were running late. I was told that the kitchen would be closing soon, which made me wonder if we should even keep the reservation. I wanted to enjoy my dinner and not be rushed. This restaurant was new to me and it just set the impression with that unwelcoming comment. I may go back."

  • "Ray, our server, was very attentive and constantly coming around to check on us and making sure our water glass was always filled. This is my first time dining here and was attracted by the items on the menu. Everything was good and I would recommend this restaurant again. I knocked off a point as the host did not let us select another table for us to be seated in. We later saw that he allowed other patrons to select a table of their liking."

  • "Really enjoyed our brunch at Three, Astaria reincarnated. The menu offers nice breakfast options as well as more lunch type items that cover the bases. There are some fun twists on traditional options and the mushroom stogies should be eaten anytime of the day!"
