Diner Reviews
  • "Although excellent in some aspects, Three Flags fell short with a number of dishes. The appetizers did not keep up with the main dishes and the quality varied widely. Lobster beignets were disappointing with uncooked centers and a totally tasteless dipping sauce (was supposed to be butter and spicy and lobster tasting). Fried cheese sticks were very greasy. Special fish was outstanding, special pork plate- pork was outstanding as was the relish that accompanied it but the " heirloom tomatoes" topping amounted to 3 some split grape tomatoes. Shrimp and grits was excellent."

  • "In June, the Riverfront Times claimed this restaurant to be the best restaurant of 2014. The food was certainly good but not great. The burger, which the RFTs particularly extolled, was so greasy from simply the amount of butter on the bun that it was almost inedible. The actual burger part was pretty darn good. The rest of the food was good enough that I'd give it another shot. The patio is an amazing feature that in and of itself warrants another visit."

  • "Made reservations after seeing a rave review in paper, then was a bit wary after reading some of these reviews. All I can say is, everything I had was EXCELLENT. My friend said the same. I had the chopped salad, the pork assortment with heirloom tomatoes, and a made-to-order stone fruit cobbler. Not one course came up short--salad was interesting with an assortment of flavors and textures. Meat was tender and flavorful, with a perfect sweet/hot chutney on the side. And the dessert--flaky, light crust over warm fruit with vanilla ice cream melting down. What else can I say? The service was mixed--very personable, but not quick to bring second round of wine, etc. Go here, by all means! Just don't plan a scheduled event immediately after."

  • "The food wasn't fabulous, but it was very good. A little smaller portion than expected with the entrees. The lobster beignets were a little greasy but delish. (Overpriced, though.) Shrimp 'n' grits great, but the scallops in that dish were too salty and a little gritty—a real no no. Server needed to check water, etc. more often, but very friendly and knowledgable. As per many other reviews, way too noisy. They'll have to do something about that soon. You get the idea: lots to like, but didn't knock our socks off."

  • "Food was very fair. We ask that no scallions or pinions be on our food. Two dishes were covered with onions. Service was terrible. I had an uncooked burger and server never came by so I could to tell her. I would never go back."

  • "We waited over an hour for our food on a weekday for lunch. There was another larger group being served and that could have been why since we were behind them but we think they should have been able to handle both groups. The noise level, especially from the larger group made it almost impossible to hear our smaller group conversations. Also, there was a terrible glare from the front windows."

  • "Food was good but portions on some of the entrees were a bit small for the price. It's a nice place but I was not bowled over."
    Dined on 6/26/2014
  • "THE INSIDE WAS SO NOISY THAT THE FOUR OF US AT THE TABLE COULD HARDLY HEAR EACH OTHER. The ceilings and the floors badly need some noise control."
    Dined on 6/25/2014
  • "We arrived on time and were seated right away. The first order of chips was served cold and greasy. the second order tacos came with two shells wrapped around some old meat, they were also cold. So we ordered our main entrees hoping for better luck. The fried chicken "their special" was commercially breaded and over cooked, the hamburger was dry and crumbly and the fish special (an artic char) had been chopped off a bigger slab of fish and hastiliy applied to our plates. The herbs a were not interesting the presentation dull. I could have done better at home."

  • "Fried chicken and trout were delicious. However, each of these entrees did night include a salad or side so we felt they were over priced, especially the trout."

  • "po0r cocktail, heavy food, rabbit sausage best; trout thick , too much support food ( heavy nuts, etc) lobster rolls too heavy , not fresh tasting fish, greasy"

  • "We were back for the second time and had dinner outside. It was deligtful and the food was delicious. I had the lobster roll - it presents beautifully but I wish it was chopped a bit more because the claw meat all came in one bite - leaving a lot of roll almost empty. The trout was delcious and 2 people at our table thought the steak was wonderful. Our waitress was fun, energetic and knowledgeable. Went inside for a moment and in the diningroom, with 3 empty tables, it was so loud it was hard to hear anything. They really need to do something IMPORTANT to help muffle the noise - maybe swing/tack flags from corner to corner (appropros of the name) to soften the noise level - it is really bad. I took a whole star off for that!"

  • "My husband and I visited on a Wednesday evening. The lobster beignets were very good and something a little different. The chopped salad was the best thing I ate all evening, just so fresh, perfectly dressed, and tasty. The pork mixed grill was good as was the hamburger. I would not recommend the Lyonnaise potato - boring and maybe a teensy bit undercooked? The hubby wished he had written down the name of the wine he enjoyed. Service was pleasant and properly attentive. We look forward to going back."

  • "This is a true neighborhood gem that has a good bar, friendly bartenders and really good food. The wait staff is excellent and there answers to questions right on."

  • "I think the meal I had was good. I had the fried chicken and it was crisp and tasty. My complaint is that it only came with a biscuit so if you wanted any sides you had to order separate which was enough for 2 people. It's hard if the other person wants different things. Most restaurants serve chicken with mashed potatoes at least."

  • " After reading a terrific review, we had high expectations. We ordered the fried chicken and shrimp and grits. Both were okay but we have had better. A hamburger and fries will cost you $17 and shrimp and grits wih a side of greens is $24, a bit expesive for a neighborhood tavern. We liked the looks and feel of the place but the noise level made it difficult to converse. The server was very attentive."

  • "We were pleased to note that the wine list was not too expensive. The lobster beignet raves were correct. We tried the shrimp and grits-***...Maine lobster roll...***, the Connecticut lobster roll-****, and three sides: carrots-good, asparagus hollandaise-perfect, and fries-okay. We had a new server and she did very well. The only. off note was the noise level, which was LOUD. All those hard surfaces make for NOISE. If I were the owners, I would put corduroy on the inside wall. Painting over the paneling already looks like corduroy."

  • "We went to Three Flags on a Friday night right after it received good reviews in the local papers and they were a little slammed by the crowd. We did have a reservation thanks to Open Table and got seated promptly. The food was all interesting, well prepared and there were several items we will want to try on another visit. Due to the crowd the service was a little slow mainly due to the kitchen being overwhelmed, but this will get worked out over time. We will definitely return. Only suggestion is that they find a better way to store their wine than the bins in the walls as it was hard for them to reach and the wine gets too warm when there is a good sized crowd. The selection itself was fine and had good wines at decent price points."

  • "We summer in Maine and this is the only place outside of there that makes a fine lobster roll! In fact you can get it either the Maine way with mayo or the Connecticut way, hot with butter. Both are yummy."

  • "Dining rm. so loud you couldn't hear yourself think. $20 Lobster roll dreadful. Gazpacho portion miniscule. Halibut portion very small with no broth/sauce-just tasteless. Since everything we ordered was so below average, would never go back."
    Dined on 6/13/2014
  • "My friends and I were excited to try the lobster beniets, but they were very bland. The chopped salad and shrimp and grits however, were full of flavor and I would definitely order them again. We had a slight snafu with service, as people kept trying to clear our food and drinks before we were finished, and we were even asked to leave after 90-min to free up a table, but I would probably go back."

  • "We enjoyed a delicious meal - service was excellent! Only complaint is that it is noisy - glad so many tables were filled, but made it difficult to hear conversation across a small table. Restaurant decor was nice - loved the chairs! Definately plan to return - hope to sit on patio next time."

  • "We were seated right at reservation time, which I appreciated. The menu had many choices but then Katie described the specials which all sounded great too. The food was sensational. The menu and specials were priced very fairly. Service was knowledgeable and friendly. We are looking forward to going back, soon!"

  • "Food was very good, oysters were not, but you always take a chance with those. Shrimp, scallops and grits outstanding. Wine terrific. Service was good, but slow as the restaurant filled up. Patio looked great. Would go again."

  • "Food and service were very good. Have dined @ 3 Flags several times. Noise level can be a problem especially with background music at times. Will return and will recommend the restaurant to others."

  • "Went with a friend on a Wednesday night at seven and the place was absolutely full. It was a bit loud but not overbearing. The server was excellent and well versed on the menu items. She was very busy but kept a great attitude. The menu is basically a la carte and so the bill can be run up to $50-60 range per person before tip if you have drinks and dessert. I had the steak and my friend had the shrimp and scallops dish. We each ordered a side dish (asparagus and cauliflower) and dessert. In short, everything was good! I'm tired now. Read the online menu for plate descriptions. If you want a good dining experience, go. "

  • "I had a business dinner at Three Flags this week and the entire group was blown away by the restaurant. During the meeting the next day, no one could stop talking about the New York Steip, the pork trio, or the soft shell crab. All agreed it was an outstanding experience at a reasonable price."

  • "Lunch was very nice. We wanted to order chicken salad, but the kitchen ran out so we both had the mojo pork sandwich. Outstanding! Slaw was very nice - appeared to be jimaca julienne instead of the usual cabbage. Fruit was also nicely presented. The menu, while not extensive, is well done. Each dish is given special care. Not only is the décor well done, in a sort of urban, hip casual ambiance, the chairs are most comfortable as well. Frequently, restaurants forget about seating comfort (on occasion I bring my own cushion) or chair / table height. We are so delighted that Three Flags Tavern is the newest addition to our area! Merci. "

  • "We were looking forward to our Saturday night date here. We had a 7:45 reservation and got there at 7:30 and were given a table that was in the middle of Where everyone was congregating to wait for their tables, crowded and noisy. We were them moved to a high top in the bar. No tables in the dining room and we had a reservation. No servers showed up so my husband went to the bar and got cocktails for us. Finally flagged a server and ordered at 7:50. Dinner did not show up until 9 p.m. The fried chicken was hard as a rock, three legs and one small half breast, they forgot the asparagus and the steak was mushy. Our server never showed up, we had a few bites left money on the table and walked out. "

  • "Run, do not walk to this little gem of what could be described as a great neighborhood restaurant but is much more than that. You definitely will love the food no matter what neighborhood you live in, it's wonderful. It's a warm and friendly atmosphere thanks to the philosophy of the chef and his wife that translates into good servers that know the menu and make you feel welcome. We will be back often and we live nowhere near that neighborhood. The food is not only delicious, but well thought out, beautiful and fresh, fresh, fresh in quality and ideas."

  • "We went to the tavern with a party of four. Everyone's meal was expertly prepared and served. It's the small details that this restaurant nails every time. The pairings were well-planned, the side dishes were no mere afterthought, even the desserts were wonderful. John O'Brien knows how to present bold flavors in a way that makes the less adventurous diner feel like an explorer."

  • "On a friend's recommendation, my husband and I with our college-aged daughter visited Three Flags Tavern. We like good food and good service, but are not "foodies," so didn't really know what to expect. We had the root chips with cumin ketchup, fried chicken, steak Diane, French fries, maple-glazed carrots, and apple tart with cream anglaise. Everything was truly "I can't bear to leave a bite on my plate" delicious! Service was excellent and friendly. The atmosphere managed to be both romantic and family-friendly. Although it was very early in the evening, lots of patrons had arrived & seemed to be enjoying the dining experience as much as we were. I have already recommended this restaurant to several friends!"

  • "This was my first and certainly not my last visit to Three Flags. The service was excellent. Our server knew the menu and specials very well. The food was perfectly prepared. There were no Cons to our evening."

  • "Make a reservation now for this fabulous new restaurant! It is small and intimate, so the attention to detail is right on point, from the quality of food to the service. It was hard to decide what dishes to choose from the lovely menu, and know that I will definitely return time and time again to try more of the delicious food! Our table of three shared three delectable appetizers - oysters on the half shell, steak tartare, and the lobster beignets. Entrees were amazing from the steak Diane, trout, and especially the lobster roll on a perfect potato roll. Impressive list of daily specials. Owners John and Kathy O'Brien were both seen throughout the evening, and it was a joyful experience."

  • "... because your food is simply wonderful! Pros: Food is excellent, menu eclectic. Pricey. The decor-pleasant backdrop rather than a screaming statement. Cons: Noise! We couldn't hear the server describing the specials at our 6 top. Worse - we couldn't hear one another! All the surfaces are hard. Server was knowledgeable and attentive at first, but then seemed to forget about us. During the very long wait for food, I signaled for a drink refill (and got a nod) 3 times before I got it. Our entrees took more than 40 minutes to come out - too long! It was cold! Seated on the banquette on the wall opposite the A/C outlets, we had a cold wind blowing on the table and, worse, in my face. Find a way to deflect that wind, folks. Not good! "

  • "We dined on appetizers, a full meal and drinks. We had three different apps, including an off the menu shrimp on toast with a cream sauce, lobster beignets, and taco de carnitos, all were AMAZING. My wife had the burger, and I had the fried chicken, we shared and they were seriously among the best I have ever had anywhere. I highly recommend this place, and the owners are some of the sweetest people we met that night. "

  • "First two visits were outstanding. Salad with bacon and hearts of palm was unique and one of the best St Louis, as were the Pork and Trout entrees Last three visits salad has changed, ham substituted for bacon and dressing also seems to have changed or is more sparse. Food in general on later visits not as outstanding as the first two visits and not served at proper temperature. Like the ambience and menu , but needs more consistency."

  • "We were quite impressed by the overall experience. Waiter, Jacob, was excellent. Food was well above average. We like the idea that the menu was not contrived and overly expressive good quality food, well prepared. thank goodness, no pork cheek on the menu which has been so overdone in a lot of St. Louis restaurants. Very nice ambiance and clean restroom. Our only bad dining experience was that there was a group of six (I dare not call them ladies, more like a rowdy bunch who should have eaten at a sports bar rather that this gem of what I would call a "gastro pub" this rude group ruined the dining experience for then entire room. We were celebrating two birthdays and this was our first time. Very welcome addition to the St Louis area."
