Diner Reviews
  • "I organized a small group of colleagues for a first-time visit here on a snowy night when a bit of the tropics was definitely in order. Being able to make a reservation took the stress out of the visit, and we were immediately seated in a cozy booth. The drinks were delicious, as were the snacks--especially the thai fried chicken and the "chips" and guac. But our server really made the night--she was sweet, funny, and very knowledgeable about the drinks. She patiently answered all of our questions and returned our banter in equal measure. Three Dots is a gem; we'll definitely be back. And it's just pure bonus that if you leave early enough, Firecakes is right there, waiting to satisfy your now-tipsy sweet tooth before you head home. "

  • "Went for a bachelorette party with 7 people. Made a reservation fortunately. We were 10 minutes late because we couldn't find it - it is down an alley and not very well lit or marked from the street. They gave up our reservation after 10 minutes (because we couldn't find the bar) and we had to wait another 10 for a table, but no big deal. Very very crowded - not worth going unless you make a reservation (on a weekend at least). Very loud but fun atmosphere and great strong drinks. The garnishes and drink cups are very fun - service was good."

  • "Very fun atmosphere, drinks are great. Food was good, but small portions, but go for the drinks."

  • "Fun environment, great drinks and good spot for groups. Definitely need a reservation and it is helpful to get a booth. Recommend the Saturn (I swapped out vodka for the gin) and the guacamole for sure. Recommend for a different night out!"

  • "3D&D is in a back alley probably for the appeal. Food & drinks are okay but service is not typical of a LEY."

  • "Drinks are amazing! They need to add more food to their menu!"

  • "If you can get into three dots and a dash and get a table you should know the tables can be very small bar tables that are up to your knees. They also have full size tables but the bar crowd encircles you. The good thing is the all the staff is friendly, professional and they don't rush you. The drink are very strong but very delicious. The food is small plate so we order 4 for the 2 of us. The shrimp was typical coconut ship, nothing special. The tuna was simple but great. The crab Rangoon very also very good and god great with the 4 dipping sauce they provide you. The best dish by far were the ribs! If you squeeze a little of the lime on them it's the perfect balance between sweet, acidic and smoky. I could have eaten 5 more orders."

  • "The host was extremely nice. Our server was very rude and did not deliver what we asked. Drinks take a very long time to get and have a lot of ice in them. Overall presentation is very cool and very fun place to be. Do not think I will go back because how pricy it is and you do not really get that much...its a great one time experience. Really disappointed in our server."

  • "I found Three Dots (as I've chosen to endearingly call the place) via online through Chicago Magazine's list of 20 best new bars. It was listed as number 1 so it must be good right? I looked at the website and immediately was in love with the place! It's a tiki bar! But no sense of cheap decor and a corny execution of Polynesian cuisine and drinks. Each drink comes in a very unique and very cool Polynesian mug and the ambiance is relaxed with dim lighting to set the mood. The waitresses are decked out in cute floral dresses and they sure know how to recommend drinks! You must try the Zombie Punch! It's served in a skull glass with fire, yes fire, as part of the decoration. It's very good, but drink with caution, it's strong!"

  • "Crowds came early @5pm opening & was packed by 6pm. Go thru alley behind Bub City. Super good drinks avg price $13. Fun, hip ambiance. Very dark & plenty warm in there. Coconut shrimp was great (snack, not a meal place). Would go back @ opening or with reservations."

  • "What a great way to escape the winter cold! This place felt like an evening in tropical paradise. The service was very friendly, and the classic and modern tiki drinks were very tasty."

  • "Three Dots and a Dash definitely lived up to the hype: delicious drinks in a fun setting. I highly recommend making a reservation so as to avoid having to stand outside in a line, which at this stage of my life isn't happening. The door person was very nice, found our. And and directed us to the hostess, who sat us almost immediately. The drinks are delicious, and we loved having extra straws at the table so we could taste everyone's drink. Our server couldn't have been more delightful. We were a bit rushed due to a timing restriction, but we still had fun, and will for sure go back."

  • "Three Dots and a Dash is a FANTASTIC tribute to the Tiki bars/restaurants of yore. The drinks, which are delicious and strong, are served in beautiful tiki mugs and further embellished with all sorts of flowers, drink stirrers, and if you're lucky, a banana dolphin. My friend and I had a reservation for 7:30; we arrived at 7 and they sat us immediately. Our table was small and the adjacent tables were very close, but everyone was friendly, likely due to the strong drinks. The crowd was very eclectic, which was nice. My only complaint...they had a bahtroom attendant, which I think was unncessary. Just know tiki drinks add up fast, so expect a larger bill at the end of the night!"

  • "I decided to come into this unique tiki bar after countless rave reviews from friends and colleagues. I was not only amazed by the extensive menu of Hawaiian themed cocktails but the decor made you feel as if you were vacationing in the islands. I fell in love with the drinks and my date.(not in that order) It was truly a magical experience to say the least. BV AC"

  • "This was a fun place. The drinks were terrific and though the food menu was pretty limited, it was very good. I would recommend the thai fried chicken and spares ribs...delicious! The only isssue is finding it since you have to go through an alley to get to it."

  • "Listed as a Tiki Bar. No real tropical music just load, banging bass music with no real tropical flair. Try to view the Tiki bar but people were 5-6 people deep around the bar. Very loud and hard to have a normal conversation. Half the people in the bar were too young to know what a real Tiki bar is like"

  • "This is more of a cocktail bar than a restaurant. I wouldn't suggest it for a meal, but it's great for drinks and snacks!"

  • "I made a reservation for 8 people at three dots and a dash a couple months in advance. When we arrived, the table they sat us at was tiny. There's no way 8 people could fit there and that was the only option available... They compensated by adding chairs to the end of the table. Also, don't come hungry because their appetizers are small and overpriced. Their drinks are expensive but worth it! Would come back with a smaller group and definitely just for drinks."

  • "The drinks were unique, but a little expensive, considering that I didn't feel like either of my two drinks were outstanding. We had the chips and guacamole, which were very good. The decor is fantastic and the music is pretty good too. The best part of the whole experience was the attire of the waitresses. The dresses were simply awesome!! During our visit, we encountered a strange odor in the corner booth, which was a bummer. Our waitress also seemed annoyed and was not as friendly as some of the other staff that we encountered."

  • "Great drinks. Cool ambiance. Got crowded quick. Food was good but pricey for such small portions. On my next visit I'll go early just for drinks and then grab dinner at one of the many restaurants on Hubbard. Great pit stop to impress friends/out-of-town guests. Waittress Brittany was gorgeous, sweet and attentive. Don't forget...the entrance is in the alley, speakeasy style!"

  • "This place was definitely not your average bar. Has a tiki bar theme going down to the servers in printed dresses as their uniform. We were excited to try it because my friend kept seeing great photos of the drinks. Well… the cups are cute.. the drink we had was terrible. The menu is extremely limited to maybe 10 small plates. Don't get me wrong…the food we did order was yummy but the bill was outrageously expensive for 2 drinks and a handful of small plates. I would maybe go there for a drink…just not the Pain Killer. The food is good but again, small portions. The table next to us was a party of 8 and they had to order ribs 3 or 4 times because they didn't have enough for everyone."

  • "We had reservations for 9 pm on a saturday. We were seated at 10:45. The staff was apologetic and took care of our entire check and brought us food and drinks for free all night. Great place with amazing drinks. Don't make reservations on a weekend, you will most likely not be seated at all. But you might get free stuff!"

  • "I love tiki bars but this place just takes that concept to a much higher level. Drinks are fantastic - beautiful to look at , but more importantly, so well balanced. Food is pretty good too, better than I expected. Ribs were the kind of sticky-sweet I expected, but not so sweet and also not pulling from the bone too much. But service leaves a lot 2 be desired, particularly front of house: after 1st acknowledging reservation, said no reservation under my name 5 minutes later; instead of taking us 2 a table, led us halfway & then pointed at a table (where someone else was sitting); when told that someone else was at table, didn't apologize but took my cell phone # and said she'd text when table ready. Then waited 30 minutes 4 drinks."

  • "Arrived at 8:45pm for a 9pm Reservation. Was immediately let inside and checked in at the host stand. Was told our table would be ready closer to 9pm. At about 9:45 (45 mins after the reservation time) I went back to the host stand and asked how much longer it would be, and was told maybe another 45 minutes. I asked why since I had a reservation for 9pm, and was told that they had too many reservations and not enough tables. We left, and over an hour later we finally got a text that our table was ready, but didn't go back. The drinks are nice here and the vibe is energetic, but unless they get the crowd and reservation system under control, I'd caution you to plan for a wait as reservations don't mean much."

  • "Loved Three Dots and a Dash! To find it, go around to the back of the building into the alley and look for a blue door. You'll enter a dimly lit stairwell, then walk down a hallway, and emerge at the host stand. Great ambiance inside, you'll feel like you've transported to Hawaii. The drinks are innovative and strong. They are expensive, so watch how many you order. Ordered the Luau Chips and Thai Fried Chicken - both were delicious. Good for a group if you make a reservation ahead of time. We came with six people for happy hour and had a reservation. Will definitely be bringing friends and out of town guests here in the future! The service and attention, as well as recommendations on food and drinks, were fantastic."

  • "We had a great night out at ...-. Very hard to find (tucked away in a dark alley lit only by tiki torches) but that added to the fun and ambience. Courteous staff, was seated right away at a good table. Drinks were really tasty, with some interesting and unusual flavors. Cocktails were not overly sweet like you usually find in the average tropical drinks - which was refreshing. Obviously these cocktails were crafted with great care and attention to detail. Beautiful presentation. Food options were limited but also very tasty and well executed (especially the Thai fried chicken). Music selections didn't quite fit the tropical lounge ambience in my opinion. Overall a great romantic spot for drinks!"

  • "The food and drinks have always awesome when we visit Three Dots and a Dash. The service was really great and our server went out of her way to be accommodating. My only complaint is the lack of authentic "TIki" music, traditionally found in Tiki lounges through the years. Need to play more exotica music like Martin Denny, Les Baxter, etc., and less modern music to properly set the ambience for a true tiki lounge experience! Will definitely be back."

  • "It was our first time here. All the tropical drinks we had were yummy! The food selections were appetizers. We had the Chicken Thai (featured dish) and that was fantastic! Our server was Samantha, her service over the top, outstanding!"

  • "Three Dots And A Dash an amazing find. I can't remember the last time I had the urge to go back to a bar like i do at this bar. this place is absolutely amazing. from the drinks to the atmosphere to the staff and the aroma. (seriously keep tabs on how good this place smells compared to any other bar). the drinks are all top notch. you really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. the bartenders are real friendly and masters of their craft. the food while probably not that fulfilling is really delightful. you can tell the amount of detail that went into this place it really shows in all the nooks and cracks. i highly recommend this place for local folks and out of towners."

  • "What a lovely getaway Three Dots and A Dash was! The drinks pack a punch and the atmosphere transports you out of cold, snowy Chicago to somewhere warm, lush and tropical. I was really pleased to see Barbancourt rum on the rum list, one of my favorite rums I can't find anywhere in the city. Even though I really enjoyed my Poiup Beach Boogie Board, the best drink of the evening was hidden in the back of the rum list, a Ti' Punch which is basically Haitian lime-aid with overproof rum -- light, simple, nice citrus kick and a hint of almond flavor. Fantastic!"

  • "What a great place! We reserved a table, but found bar stools available and opted for those instead. The bartender was wonderful helping us navigate the drink menu. We were there at 4:45 on a Friday afternoon, and it was relatively uncrowded, which I hear is rare. I had the Three Dots and A Dash - and two was my limit. The bouncer at the door is a little much - but everything else is perfect. The lighting, decor, music, food and drink were spectacular. We will be back."

  • "This swanky river north joint was fun but way too expensive! Service took forever and I barely had a buzz after leaving and our four-top spent $175 on just drinks! It's a total tourist trap so it's now on the same list as Howl at the Moon, Red Head Piano Bar and Dicks last resort. I would recommend it to young moms from the burbs. Sorry will only be back if my out of town friends need a tiki fix."
