A word from Thornton River Grille
Serving great American food with a worldly flair, we’re open Tuesday through Saturday from 11am to 3pm for lunch and 5pm to 9pm for dinner. We also serve a lovely brunch on Sunday from 10am to 3pm and dinner from 5pm to 8pm. The atmosphere is at the same time elegant and casual. The richness and warmth of the hand-planed wood-paneled walls provides a comfortable dining experience that can be enjoyed equally in dressy-casual attire or hiking shorts. We are located in the heart of historic Sperryville, Virginia, 75 miles west of Washington D.C., at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains. We look forward to serving you soon!Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Servers were incredibly accomodating and attentive. Delicious food. Wonderful wine and great atmosphere. It is a Sperryville treasure !"

  • "Thornton River Grille is one of those word-of-mouth places that you want to rave about, but try not to in case it becomes too popular. The ambiance is country diner, but nicer. The decor is plain, but elegant by being consistent and unpretentious. The "standards" are good -- steak, cheeseburger, salmon. But the unique items amaze: the pulled brisket Reuben on marbled rye, the carmelized scallops, the grilled crispt/tender shrimp, the mussels, the duck , and the risotto. The sides -- tomato cous-cous, crusted fries, tarragon cole slaw -- make it pretty much perfect. TRG is one of those prizes that you really want to tell everyone about -- just so long as you don't have to stand in line behind them to get a table."

  • "I was happy to see that the MANY people who recommended this wonderful restaurant to me were 'right on.' The only negative thing is the rather seedy back door (which serves as the 'front' door) entrance. However, this is quickly forgotten in light of the EXCELLENT upscale food, and the WONDERFUL service. Not cheap, but what good isn't? Make a point of visiting!"

  • "The servers here were top notch--very helpful and friendly. Five of us were heading to the wonderful Castleton venue for an evening of opera music and were unfamiliar with the small windy roads we found ourselves on. The entire wait staff joined in on helping us find our way. Oh, and the food was delicious and attractive."

  • "We love to find restaurants that are a short walk from where we are staying. Thornton River Grille is just a few stops from several B&B's in Sperryville (We stayed at Hopkins Ordinary-excellent). We loved everything about the place. The food was very good and my desert was better than anything I have had in DC. A wonderful find whether you are hiking in Shenandoah NP, driving the Civil War trail or just antiquing the countryside."

  • "We eat at the Grille often. It never disappoints us with the excellent quality of both the food & service."

  • "It was a quiet night. The food came fast (too fast to enjoy our bottle of wine). Food was excellent. Dining room was small but quiet. There isn't much competition in the area for that type of restaurant but they do a good job."

  • "This is the third time I've dined at the Thorton River Grille. The relaxed ambience combined with the elegant dishes makes the Thorton River Grille a perfect spot for romantics for Valentine's Day, anniversaries, etc. The portions are quite generous and the prices were affordable."

  • "I have eaten many steaks and I would put this one right up there in the top 5. My girlfriend ordered the chipolte shirmp and they were also some of the best ever. We will be coming back to try some other menu items."

  • "Absolutely delicious meal, snapper was superb. Risotto cake was not what I envisioned, but was true comfort food once more goat cheese was added. Staff was very accommodating."

  • "For special occasions or just a night out with friends, this place is great. The service is always excellent and the food is wonderful. A notable wine list as well as great beer selection. All food is prepared fresh, fresh, fresh!! Highly recommend this spot. We have even stopped in for a burger on our way home from work and have received excellent service and attention."

  • "We always enjoy the TRG! This time we had a reservation, but they were so busy there was a 40 minute wait for the reserved table?? But, aside from that hiccup everything else was good. We were offered drinks while waiting, and the food was excellent. We will be back!"

  • "Always wonderful. The eclairs were terrific but only two would have been more than adequate. Bring back the taster menu."

  • "Portions are generous and seasonal ingredients are used to create tasty, inventive combinations. Bistro style meats and fowl are featured, but the fish dishes are always fresh and creative. Soups, unique salads, and specials should not be overlooked for starters. Above-average wines can be had by the glass (in the 80-85 pt. range) and the pour is not stingy. Numerous bottled wines are also available as are artisian beers. In winter, seating is limited to about 70 indoors. Despite the busyness, our service was spot on. Food arrived hot at appropriate intervals and wines by the glass were pefectly timed. Reservations are a must at the most popular times. For this style of dining, this charming spot is at the top of our list."

  • "Excellent place to go for dinner and a choices for some local Virginia wines. The dinning area is cozy - just the right size. My wife had the scallops and I had the filet - both were very good. The staff is very friendly."

  • "Nice restaurant in a small mountain town. My wife and I had seafood (shrimp dish and a scallop dish), both were very good. Wine selection was better than expected. Our dessert, their apple tart was fantastic - a must try. Wait staff was attentive. Would eat there again."

  • "Went to Open Table for ideas while crossing rural Virginia west of DC. Booked dinner here based on OT review and had an absolutely wonderful experience. Great food and wonderful staff who clearly really cared about guest experience. But get good directions before you get there. Your cell phone may not work this far out in the country!"

  • "Thornton River Grille is a WONDERFUL surprise tucked in the village of Sperryville. They have been most accommodating, whether it is Dinner for 4 , or Lunch for 16 classmates reuniting! The food menu ALWAYS HAS scrumptious choices, prepared just right and a service team who work together to make your meal more comfortable than HOME. They have a nice wine and beer list, as well as mixed drinks available to enjoy with your meal. LOVE IT!"

  • "nice place close to the Shenandoah Natl. Park; food was very good (pork chops very tender, great bread pudding), wine selection okay; place has wireless (for those who desperately want to connect to the world after being cut out from the rest of the world while cruising the park); service is down to earth, friendly and to the point, also fast; very flexible when we asked to switch tables"

  • "My boyfriend and I really enjoyed our meal here. I had the fried goat cheese app (delish) and glazed pork - a little dry, but still very yummy. Loved the ambience and our only complaint was the waitress neglected to bring our bread, and didn't offer pepper, which she did for other tables. So minor and issue, and I would definitely go back!"

  • "This was our second visit in 12 months. We really enjoyed it both times. Casual atmosphere and quality menu items. I have had the ribeye on both visits and it has been terrific both times. Very consistent. Try the local Copper Fox whiskey before or after your meal. You won't be dissappointed."
