Diner Reviews
  • "The Restaurant was very busy when we arrived. However the waiter informed us the kitchen was running behind as a result of a very busy day. We appreciated the heads up. The wine and drinks came and were fine. All 4 of us enjoyed our dinners. One person of the group was celebrating his birthday, and the wait staff handled it very well by bringing an ice cream dessert for him. Overall I would have no hesitation in returning, as they were on their game !!! The only suggestion I have for the owners is that the music can be lowered in volume, as people were speaking loudly over the music in order to be heard by their friends. If it was lower, people would have lowered their voices as well, and it would not have been so loud"

  • "Horrible horrible experience ... noise and acoustics were so bad we could NOT have a conversation. Service was the worst ever! We waited so long for the food that my son and daughter in law had to leave because the baby sitter had to leave at 9:30. Would never ever go here again"

  • "This was our 2nd visit. The first was a Monday evening and the food was great. The service was good, so overall first visit was fun and good food. This visit on a Friday evening, however, failed on all levels. The waitress seemed spacey, forgetting half of what we ordered and failed to give us eating utensils. The meal was only fair. We ordered the same appetizer as the first visit (the grilled artichoke) and on this Friday evening the appetizer was cold and did not have the same great flavor as the one on our Monday visit. Our main courses were also just fair. Do not go here on busy nights unless you don't mind mediocre food and service. However, if you like scantily clad waitresses and don't care about the food, go anytime."

  • "i have been there twice now - and really enjoy the food, the skills of the wait staff, prices, and general ambiance. However, if i were only able to sit inside, this would be a no go! the noise level is beyond energetic - as your survey offers. I call it deafening; impossible to have a conversation without shouting. And, when I go out with friends to have a meal together, I plan to have a conversation! Otherwise, why bother. So, the noise level is contrary to my objectives. In short - I boycott restaurants who specialize in "energetic" noise level. So, as long as I can be outside on the patio, this is a first choice location. In bad weather, I will go elsewhere."

  • "I took clients here once for happy hour. Good drink selection and great appetizers. Went back with clients for lunch, food was exceptional. Can't wait to go back and take others there."

  • "Us ladies were in town from Iowa, and our hotel concierge recommended. We had an amazing experience and plan to return again during our next trip"

  • "Our server was fabulous and knowledgeable. Great views of the new Union Station fountains. I had the flatbread which was incredible. We loved this place!"

  • "The Thirsty Lion proved a little bit of a disappointment. The food on the whole was decent, but rarely rose above that. The one exception was the appetizer of the potato cakes, which was exceptional. One burger and steak salad came cooked to order, but one was overdone. We all ate our food, but I don't think any of out party of four is likely to return anytime soon. The bartender also did not know how to make a Tom Collins well. The noise level was a little high for our middle aged ears."

  • "I had high hopes for this place, but it was a lackluster experience at best. The good: The atmosphere was nice, appetizers were REALLY tasty (grilled artichoke, ceviche, and sauteed brussel sprouts), and my friend's blood orange margarita was good. The not-so-good: The main course (pene chicken) and wine weren't all that good, especially the wine. It was a red blend that was a featured bottle...probably best for sangria. I've had MUCH better wine for the $. Also, the service was poor. I'm no stickler, BUT the bottle of wine was brought over already open, appetizers were brought without plates or silverware, my girlfriend's food was prepared incorrectly so we had to wait for a second dish, and my water glass was empty most of the time."

  • "This is a great new spot for lunch downtown. Especially in the summer months, their patio for outdoor dining is fabulous. Portions are large, so you get your money's worth. Service is a bit slow but we weren't in a rush so it was fine."

  • "I had one of the best Hamburgers and fries in Denver! Creative cocktails as well! Fun place to meet before or after a Rockies baseball game!"

  • "I have geen wanting to try Thirsty Lion since it opened. I don't drink beer, but I can appreciate their offerings are excellent. I went for the food and was not dissappointed. Best Scotch eggs I've ever had; they were perfect. The soft pretzel was likewise perfect, and the pale ale fondue was tasty if different. My friend had the spicy mac 'n cheese, and it was delicious. But we had to YELL across the table, to be able to have a conversation. The day was too hot to be outside, so it was a bit like feeling trapped. And it wasn't the music, either. I couldn't even hear the music. It was ambient noice from diners, kitchen, staff. I will come back, but when it is less hectic/busy."

  • "The food was ok, but a bit high for how much you get. The music was so loud it was impossible to hold a conversation. We asked to be seated outside trying to get away from the noise, but they pipe the music outside, too."

  • "Three of us dined here on a Monday evening prior to a baseball game. The food was all very good, and the service was fine. We ordered an appetizer (the artichoke was superb - you must try it) and the waitress encouraged us to go ahead and order our main course. We did asking that the meals be held while we enjoyed the appetizer and the waitress said she would do so - but alas, the food arrived in the middle of our appetizer. We complained, and the food was taken back. When it arrived later, it was still warm and good - so no harm. But DO NOT order your main course until AFTER you have at least received you appetizer."

  • "The food is great here - every time we go, we always try something new and it never fails. That being said, the service is probably the slowest I've seen downtown. We have to make sure we budget at least 1 1/2 to 2 hours for lunch simply because we don't ever know how good the service will be. Hopefully, since they are a new restaurant they'll get the service issues taken care of asap because the food and locaiton is great."

  • "Nice location near Union Station, but probably geared more toward the under 50-year-old crowd...lots of TVs and lots of noise."

  • "This place was perfect. Our group was looking for great food with local beer, and this hit the spot. Although, they have a few locations across the country, this place will feel like a local gastropub."

  • "We really enjoyed the food and the service was good too. We reserved a table outside for six but there was not one available on the patio when we arrived. Arrangements were made and we did get seated outside. Inside is too noisy for anything but texting. The outside patio is terrific."

  • "Food was good for a bar. Service was not so good. Party of four and table only had two place settings. Finally had to ask server for the other two sets when the food came. Server placed the settings at the end of the table opposite of the people without the settings. Server forgot our appetizer, which finally came well into the meal."

  • "My Salad: Missing and incorrect ingredients on my salad. The portion was very small and poor food presentation. Friend's Ahi: Prepared right but extremely salty and way too spicy. Her replacement tuna was then too bland. Her salad was comped but then they charged 2x for the tuna? Yes, charge once for the tuna, but not for the replacement! Manager ended up comping both salads for our trouble. We left the server a 20 dollar tip because the event was stressful and the problems were the kitchen's, not hers."

  • "Went there for lunch for the first time with a friend and the food was really good, although with a meal, drink and tip, you can spend $18-$20 easily so visiting there on a regular basis is probably not going to happen."

  • "Went with a small group for lunch. Food was extremely slow to come out and the server was extremely unapologetic. Every time we asked him for something he acted like we were bothering him. A couple of us had salads and the chicken had far too heavy of a 'smokey' flavor- we both left all of it in a pile in the bowl and ate all the lettuce and veggies around it. The waiter didn't ask a thing about it. Scottish Eggs were a delicious choice for an appetizer and the burger looked delicious. We will probably give it another chance but not any time soon..."

  • "Although our waitperson was extremely nice, it was SO SLOW getting anything and especially or bill. If they want to build lunch business they need to get faster!"

  • "The food here really is great (hence the 4 stars). I have had appetizers on the patio with a glass of wine and then came on a separate occasion for lunch with my boss (also on the patio). The service is bad across the board (at least in my experience). The servers really seem to have their heads in the clouds. They aren't really timely with anything and don't think of things like making sure there is silverware on the table, etc. The host staff is equally not great. They seem extremely disorganized. There will be three of them up there searching for someone else to seat us. I would continue to go back though. For the right food I can put up with bad service."

  • "Great food and ambiance, but the service aspect leaves plenty of room for improvement. When we were there it took close to 15 minutes to get acknowledged by a server, even after flagging down one of the hostesses, asking if our table had an assigned server. Once a server appeared he was friendly. Even the manager came over asking if we had to wait long for service. When we confirmed, she apologized, but to our surprise nothing was comped or offered as apology. Odd! Why even bother to come over? Aside from that, it was a good dining experience, and the food was very good (quite a bit above the usual bar-food standard.)"

  • "We tried the Lion this Friday and it was one of the worst service experiences my wife and I have ever experienced. Sophia was our waitress - she acted very aloof and had no idea how to provide good service. It took over 20 minutes to get our first drink and an hour for our appetizers, which were incorrectly ordered. The lack of drinks at our table was obvious as two different managers stopped to ask if we needed anything, but then did nothing to find out why we weren't being taken care of. For dinner the burger was decent but the enchiladas, a supposed signature dish, were horrible. We are service industry vets, and what we witnessed Friday night was embarrassing. The entire place was slammed, and the staff had no idea how to recover."

  • "Solid place, with a medium sized patio. Food was tastefully presented and good , although I was told by my server the calamari was excellent, no -the benchmark is Elway's or Dels. I am asking myself, what would draw me back - with all the choices downtown. If I was walking by I would go in, but prob. not as a destination "

  • "Nice wine list and menu but jury is still out on value. First time for lunch had a beet and arugula salad with chicken but the chicken must have flown the coop as there was very little. Not worth the $$$. Will give them another try. "

  • "The menu has a nice selection of your bar favorites with a bit of a foodie bent and a great selection of beers. One of our group had the filet and said it outshines the Chop House's offering. Unfortunately the service is horrible. We visited on a Wednesday night and while the restaurant and bar were busy, it was in no way crowded. I was hosting clients as a group of 6 and we were seated with no wait on the patio. Dinner was a drop and run by someone other than our waiter and I had to go to the hostess station to get silverware. 3 hostesses lounged around the entry with seemingly nothing to do and we had to grab anyone that happened to roam by to get drinks and condiments. "

  • "It was a hot spot the night we dined - a Friday night, happy hour & a Rockies home game. With all those folks and almost deafening background; service was surprisingly, very good. Food was several notches above standard bar food. We'll be back."

  • "You'll find an ambiant, active bar and restaurant scene at Thirsty Lion. Great for people watching while you dine inside or out. Its proximity to Union Station makes this an easily accessible and popular location. I've been twice and enjoyed my food selections both times. Staff is attentive and pleasant. Check it out!"

  • "I had never been to a Thirsty Lion before and did not expect too much, but I must say it was excellent. The food was fantastic and in a great location in downtown Denver. I had the Fish and Chips and I highly recommend that dish. My wife and son had burgers and really enjoyed them as well. I will have to try our local Thirsty Lion in Tempe, hopefully it hits the mark as well."
