A word from The Writing Room
Upper East Side restaurateurs Michael & Susy Glick offer you their one of a kind experience in Regional American cuisine at The Writing Room. Five years after opening Parlor Steakhouse, The Writing Room opens its doors in the same location as the iconic Elaine's. The Writing Room is a tribute to its predecessor while at the same time aiming to blaze its own trail with its combination of cozy and inviting decor, attentive service and a stellar and inventive menu developed by Executive Chef Lucas Billheimer. Offering cuisines that represent classic New England seafood to comforting Southern barbecue, Chef Billheimer will have you planning your next visit to The Writing Room before you've completed this one. The Writing Room also offers a private dining room quaintly referred to as The Study. We look forward to welcoming you.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "We had a great time at The Writing Room. Arrived early for our reservation they put us in a both at the bar that was reserved after our table would be ready instead of making us wait around. It is restaurant week, which we participated in and the portions were full size and amazing as always. Definitely be back often."

  • "Service was lovely I screwed up my reservation and they were very understanding. The service was outstanding quick quiet and helpful. The food was very tasty I got the Salmon Salad and it was moist and nicely flavored. The plated amount was just right and the wine choices very varied. Wish I lived closer to this gem. The decor is wonderfully warm and interesting if you have a chance take a look at the back room its like a time machine."

  • "I went with three girlfriends. We split the burger and fried chicken. It was insanely good. Embarrassingly (perhaps), I loved the dinner rolls they served so much I put one in my bag to take home. The ambience is great too. I just loved my experience."

  • "Fabulous! Order chicken you won't be disappointed. The food is good and consistent. The service is intuitive. The surroundings are comfortable with a homey vibe. I am a repeat customer."

  • "My daughter lives in Manhattan, so have had opportunities to visit a number of places. This is definitely a keeper. Started with a number of appetizers. The ribs, hummus and burrata cheese(a special) were great. The pasta second course was delayed because the chef was unhappy with the preparation. This type of ongoing quality control is welcome and appreciated. Steaks and fish followed, all perfectly cooked. My wife and daughter left nothing of the desserts on the plate. My wife asked them to prepare a special limoncello martini. It was done perfectly and she plans to return to experience it again. We plan to return many times!"

  • "Eight month's in and the service level and the quality of the food remain consistently high. The staff is incredibly friendly and attentive, the portions are generous, and the food is tasty and attractive. Have been there for dinner at least twice a month since it opened."

  • "This was my 5th or 6th time at the Writing Room and the 3rd time I dined there. Not sure if they got a new chef but 3 out of our party of 4 thought the food was overly salty. Hopefully just a one time occurrence. They have a wonderful, very creative wine list and the sommelier was very helpful. Will definitely be back."

  • "I took my wife and daughter to the Writing Room for my daughter's birthday. We were pleasantly surprised. The food was really quite good and the service was excellent. The $38 fixed price menu was really great - my appetizer of humus was a hit with the table, the fried chicken was excellent, and the dessert was also quite good. I had read mixed reviews of the restaurant, but we found it to be really nice and the waitstaff was attentive."

  • "Wonderful new addition to the neighborhood with excellent food. Best fried chicken in years. Portions mor than ample. Friendly service and comfortable ambience."

  • "The Writing Room was recommended by a friend. The wall of books in our dining room provided a pleasant background. In general, the ambiance was attractive. As starters, I ordered the farmer's salad (nothing special) and my companion had the BBQ spare ribs (generous tasty portion). For entrees, I had the cavatelli (tasty but nothing special ) and my companion had the risotto (nice combination of flavors). Unfortunately, our bill included a charge for what was supposed to be a complimentary dessert (we were celebrating our anniversary). The charge was removed, but the dessert did not arrive until we had paid the bill and were on our way out of the restaurant."

  • "Vibrant new life in a historic location. Food, its presentation and service was well done--a nice surprise given some of the negative comments found on this site and others."

  • "After coming in at under $18 for a brunch bellini and too delicious fried chicken with a quarter waffle and syrup when my pal opted for the deep dish peach pie a la mode for two and I guiltily agreed we both had sticker shock at the tag- $19.00. True, it was divine, but the calories and cost should have been foregone- this is a dessert that works best with 4 forks!! cxc Still, The Writing Room is a new favorite. can't hold them responsible for our gluttony- you pay to play!"

  • "The food was terrible. I arrived early to order the wine for my party and it took at least a half an hour to get the bottle. Only good thing was that if yo sit in the back room it was quiet."

  • "LOVED The Writing Room - This is the kind of place the Upper East side needed. The food is excellent - everything I have had is delicious! The staff are so attentive and friendly. It's also a great, fun scene - there is a bar on one side and the restaurant on the other."

  • "This is a neighborhood place for us and ideal for special celebrations. We are both writers and come here to celebrate new contracts, royalty payments, etc. Service is prompt and curtious. The menu is not large but has something for everyone. The pictures of literary figures and the books in the back room can trigger literary nostalgia."

  • "The restaurant was fair, and I would not go back. In terms of decor, it is unfit for New York--a glorified chain restaurant, a window-dressed Olive Garden. It would, however, be a nice place in the likes of a New Haven, CT. In terms of the food, the appetizer chicken wings were abysmal--any fast food restaurant does a better job. I had the salmon as an entree, and my partner had the burger--both were simply fair. The service was fair: the waitress was cheerful when she came to see us (though she did trick us into ordering sweet potatoes as a side which we thought would be in lieu of the french fries); however, it took a long time for our order to present itself at our table. I would not go back here as it was fair but overpriced."

  • "The food at The Writing Room as just as dreadful as it was at Elaine's. It's greasy, overpriced, the portions are way too small, and there are so many other more interesting places for dining on the Upper East Side. It's basically hang out bar scene. Don't go there if you want a decent meal."

  • "Our server was attentive and enthusiastic, drinks were well made, and the food was quite good, especially my fried chicken and my son's pan seared prime strip loin. I will admit, however that the bread-rolls, unevenly heated and seemingly store-bought, were an odd touch. Still, a good meal in an attractive location, and worth a return visit, especially if we can dine in the book-lined backroom."

  • "It came highly recommended in all guides and blogs so thought would book a table. Was pleased when we were moved to a much better table when I suggested the one we were originally allocated was not good enough. However I found the menu uninspiring and the desserts a bit odd. Perhaps it was an off night. The ambience was pleasant and the service was faultless. Would try it again having checked the menu first."

  • "I dined here when they first opened and was impressed with the food then. This time I found the portions a bit skimpy, and the food overly salty and overly buttered. They aim to please, but . . . "

  • "Reservation for four was honored and that was the only positive about this restaurant. Menus were passed out before cocktail orders were taken and then we had to ask to order. Bread was 4 small doughy (think Pepperidge Farm in the tin) tasteless lumps. Asked for a mixed green salad. Waiter had to check with chef who could not serve one because the salads were pre-prepared and the mixed green had cheese in it which was not wanted. Service was unbearably & unacceptably slow. We had to ask for our entrees and when they finally arrived they were not hot. Meatballs & spaghetti were pork and gristly. Rotisserie chicken described as accompanied by "root vegetables" had 2 asparagus spears cut in half. Yucca fries tasteless and cold. Way 2 noisy."

  • "This is a nice neighborhood restaurant, nice to have something affordable and current on the upper east side. I heard a lot of positive buzz about the restaurant, including some good word of mouth from colleagues. I think I was expecting more. If you live in the neighborhood it's a nice place to stop in and have a good inexpensive meal. I wouldn't say it's worth traveling to though. The place has the vibe of an west village restaurant which is refreshing for the UES, but the food is just average. Not to say that it's not good, just not memorable. "

  • "I never frequented Elaine's too much while it was still around, but when I did, I always enjoyed the drinks and ambiance as well as the company. The Writing Room, despite it's best efforts, had terrible food and service. I came for brunch with a friend and had to choke down the lamb flatbread which was so unfortunate because I came hungry and wanted to like it. The saving grace to brunch was the donuts which came out warm and perfect. Not to mention the bacon is hand cut so you really miss out on the crispiness (if you like it crispy). Service was sub par. Perhaps this is a better place to just grab a few drinks, but I would hands down, never eat here again."

  • "A terrific new spot on the upper east side! Very attractive, and clearly a lot of thought went into such details as the perfect size booth for four people with a table curved at one end so that everyone can share food and hear each other. In the back is a great looking book-lined room with a fireplace. The menu veers toward American comfort food without resorting to clichés, an amazing feat, and the wines by the glass were interesting, delicious choices. We loved the pull-apart Parker House type rolls; a spinach salad that was perched on top of a disc of toast spread with bacon jam and the risotto with the freshest of miniature pea pods. "

  • "Both the fried chicken and roasted chicken were moist and delicious. Other guests loved the veal meat loaf and salmon. Generous portions. Nice staff and setting, albeit it loud in the main room. Next time we will ask to be seated in the library in the back. "

  • "This restaurant has taken over the location of the former iconic Elaine's.I was amazed at how busy it was on a Wednesday evening. The staff is friendly, courteous and eager to please-especially Maître d' Thierry who was very accommodating. I had a wonderful salmon tartare as appetizer, followed by the lobster boil entree, which was delicious. The only thing lacking was a big bowl in which to dispose of the clam and lobster shells; I was provided with only a small dish which was inadequate. My sister had the fava bean hummus as appetizer; I tasted it, but found it to be bland and watery. She was disappointed by the small portion of sea bass she ordered as her entree, even though the staff assured her it was 6 oz. Overalll I rate it an "A"."

  • "I have to say, reading all the good reviews always makes me nervous but they were right!!! From the moment we went in everyone was so nice. Wait staff were attentive and fun Drinks were wonderful great bottle of wine . Food was outstanding. Veal Meatloaf and Fried Chicken was great and the have funnel cake on the menu!!! Maybe a little pricy so this is why I say for special occasions. Was 4 of us and we had a drink, bottle of Wine and a cordial. All had appetizers, entrée and dessert. Was about $380 which really is not to bad for what we had. They do have a happy hour 4-6 10-midnight where everything is 10% off All in all a great experience and will go back!! (since we live 2 blocks away :)"
