A word from The Writing Room
Upper East Side restaurateurs Michael & Susy Glick offer you their one of a kind experience in Regional American cuisine at The Writing Room. Five years after opening Parlor Steakhouse, The Writing Room opens its doors in the same location as the iconic Elaine's. The Writing Room is a tribute to its predecessor while at the same time aiming to blaze its own trail with its combination of cozy and inviting decor, attentive service and a stellar and inventive menu developed by Executive Chef Lucas Billheimer. Offering cuisines that represent classic New England seafood to comforting Southern barbecue, Chef Billheimer will have you planning your next visit to The Writing Room before you've completed this one. The Writing Room also offers a private dining room quaintly referred to as The Study. We look forward to welcoming you.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "The service and atmosphere was great. Bartender was humorous and fun. Waitress knowledgeable. The food was just underwhelming- friends fish was overlooked and dry. Lobster Bake was flavorless. Salmon tartar had little salmon. However, despite the mediocre food (at relevant prices) I would recommend it only as a place to have a few relaxed drinks with friends and little kitchen expectations."

  • "My wife and I have passed here several times now and finally decided to go. What a great choice. The restaurant was a bit empty when we got there but filled up quickly. We ordered our food and some drinks which all came promptly and hot off the stove. My wife unfortunately did not like her dish and the waitress took it back brought us a menu and gave us a new dish at no extra charge. When we were finished with dinner we were offered a dessert on the house for the "mix up". We were shocked, never has a restaurant taken a meal back that we didn't like, replace it and then offer a free dessert on them."

  • "Took my spouse her for restaurant week on a friday. We knew it would be busy and it was. We had a reservation for 9 but didnt sit down until 940. Staff were apologetic and was fine. It took quite a time getting the check which might be part of the problem. Drinks and food were excellent, server was knowledgeable and friendly. I would definitely come back though perhaps would go mid-week or make an earlier reservation. The Fried chicken was amazing as was the fava bean hummus!"

  • "I went to The Writing Room for dinner, and it did not disappoint! The food was amazing, and the service was even better. My party had a reservation, but our table was not ready when we arrived. We absolutely didn't mind waiting. After waiting about 10 minutes (no time at all), the manager came and apologized to us, and gave us a round of drinks on the house! It's things like that that don't have to be done but shows that you're really in the business of serving your customers. The food was the icing on the cake!! I highly recommend the fried chicken and creme brûlée."

  • "The Writing Room is a great place for brunch, lunch, or dinner on the UES. With a very simple atmosphere, traditional menu, and friendly waitstaff, this is truly a great American restaurant. Everything about it feels like the place to meet writers, authors, directors, etc for a great working lunch or dinner."

  • "Went here for restaurant week and loved it. I've been wanting to try this neighborhood spot an I'm glad I did. I would happily take an out of town guest here for a nice UES dinner. Wait staff was wonderful and accommodating when I had to keep pushing my reservation back. The cocktails were yummy. Food was delicious and satisfying! Well done Writing Room."

  • "One of the best restaurant week experiences I've ever had! The atmosphere, food and service was exceptional. The food was delicious and well-portioned and the service by numerous waitstaff was perfectly attentive. I almost hate to say how great it was for fear it may become harder to get in...."

  • "Your hopes soar. The exterior is inviting, and the interior is very nice too. A large bar with stools and hi-top tables. All in all, an attractive upscale looking dining room with both large upholstered booths and comfortable chairs and tables. Sadly, the food was just average to poor, and we felt the chef is not attentive to details. The $18 hamburger was mediocre, the french fries soggy & ridiculously over-salted. The $13 chopped salad was served in a small, deep bowl which looked like a cereal bowl. The highpoints were the Gin Martini and the amicable wait-staff. Pleasant welcomes, and they took our orders and our returned food with a smile on their faces. Bottom Line: NYC has a very large selection of restaurants to spend your money at."

  • "Our first few visits were all very positive. Good food, sometimes creative and very good service. This past visit was a bit of a disappointment in the service department. We waited a very long time to get our first course after ordering and way too long between courses. After attempting to call the waiter over for quite some time in order to inquire after the whereabouts of our meal, we got a fairly week apology with no explanation. They did pour us some extra wine but it seemed too little too late. We hope this is an aberration."

  • "First time here, tried the prix fixe (available always before 7 and all evening Sundays). Salad had a lovely dressing, fish (salmon, branzino) entrees were both outstanding. Normally not dessert people but the chocolate/hazelnut concoction was delicious. Some very interesting cocktails and nice wines. Very energetic vibe - this feels like a happening place that will make it. Interesting decor. We will be back."

  • "Way overpriced for what you get. Three pieces of chicken for the cost of 3 whole supermarket chickens! Three small pieces of tuna for a similar price. People were nice - service was too fast."

  • "We had a great time at The Writing Room. Arrived early for our reservation they put us in a both at the bar that was reserved after our table would be ready instead of making us wait around. It is restaurant week, which we participated in and the portions were full size and amazing as always. Definitely be back often."

  • "Service was lovely I screwed up my reservation and they were very understanding. The service was outstanding quick quiet and helpful. The food was very tasty I got the Salmon Salad and it was moist and nicely flavored. The plated amount was just right and the wine choices very varied. Wish I lived closer to this gem. The decor is wonderfully warm and interesting if you have a chance take a look at the back room its like a time machine."

  • "I went with three girlfriends. We split the burger and fried chicken. It was insanely good. Embarrassingly (perhaps), I loved the dinner rolls they served so much I put one in my bag to take home. The ambience is great too. I just loved my experience."

  • "My daughter lives in Manhattan, so have had opportunities to visit a number of places. This is definitely a keeper. Started with a number of appetizers. The ribs, hummus and burrata cheese(a special) were great. The pasta second course was delayed because the chef was unhappy with the preparation. This type of ongoing quality control is welcome and appreciated. Steaks and fish followed, all perfectly cooked. My wife and daughter left nothing of the desserts on the plate. My wife asked them to prepare a special limoncello martini. It was done perfectly and she plans to return to experience it again. We plan to return many times!"

  • "Eight month's in and the service level and the quality of the food remain consistently high. The staff is incredibly friendly and attentive, the portions are generous, and the food is tasty and attractive. Have been there for dinner at least twice a month since it opened."

  • "This was my 5th or 6th time at the Writing Room and the 3rd time I dined there. Not sure if they got a new chef but 3 out of our party of 4 thought the food was overly salty. Hopefully just a one time occurrence. They have a wonderful, very creative wine list and the sommelier was very helpful. Will definitely be back."

  • "I took my wife and daughter to the Writing Room for my daughter's birthday. We were pleasantly surprised. The food was really quite good and the service was excellent. The $38 fixed price menu was really great - my appetizer of humus was a hit with the table, the fried chicken was excellent, and the dessert was also quite good. I had read mixed reviews of the restaurant, but we found it to be really nice and the waitstaff was attentive."

  • "The Writing Room was recommended by a friend. The wall of books in our dining room provided a pleasant background. In general, the ambiance was attractive. As starters, I ordered the farmer's salad (nothing special) and my companion had the BBQ spare ribs (generous tasty portion). For entrees, I had the cavatelli (tasty but nothing special ) and my companion had the risotto (nice combination of flavors). Unfortunately, our bill included a charge for what was supposed to be a complimentary dessert (we were celebrating our anniversary). The charge was removed, but the dessert did not arrive until we had paid the bill and were on our way out of the restaurant."

  • "After coming in at under $18 for a brunch bellini and too delicious fried chicken with a quarter waffle and syrup when my pal opted for the deep dish peach pie a la mode for two and I guiltily agreed we both had sticker shock at the tag- $19.00. True, it was divine, but the calories and cost should have been foregone- this is a dessert that works best with 4 forks!! cxc Still, The Writing Room is a new favorite. can't hold them responsible for our gluttony- you pay to play!"

  • "The food was terrible. I arrived early to order the wine for my party and it took at least a half an hour to get the bottle. Only good thing was that if yo sit in the back room it was quiet."

  • "LOVED The Writing Room - This is the kind of place the Upper East side needed. The food is excellent - everything I have had is delicious! The staff are so attentive and friendly. It's also a great, fun scene - there is a bar on one side and the restaurant on the other."
