Went for the first time and was very excited to realize what a great restaurant we have in our neighborhood. The restaurant is beautiful inside, the staff, especially the hosts and bartender, were very friendly, and the food was delicious! I am gluten-free and they were knowledgeable about the menu and happy to ask the chef for me to make sure. My husband isn't and he thoroughly enjoyed the Parker rolls. Wine menu was very nice. We didn't have dessert. We will definitely be coming back to try other menu items!

This restaurant gets it right! The seating is club-like, very comfortable and well done. The table spacing is good. The service was just right - attentive and allowed your privacy. The branzino was fantastic and Mother's Milk was a great pairing choice. Recommend it all the time!

I'm biased because any place with books earns instant stars. "A room without a book is a body without a soul" it was once said and I truly agree. They were nice enough to acquiesce to my request to be seated in The Study where the back wall is lined with bookshelves. The server did not poke or prod, and was in fact quite accommodating, though I sat reading a book for a good 45 min till my friend arrived. Great wine list. Wonderful bread. Interesting pre-fix that I'd take advantage of again. The atmosphere itself is worth coming for. I recommend coming early for dinner so you can sit in peace and quiet with a book and a glass of wine.

Finally ... The UES has a true fine dining restaurant. From the moment you enter, you will be awed by the magnificent decor. Once you sit and have an opportunity to review the menu ... Well your tasbuds just might explode right then and there! Choosing only one item may seem impossible - it certainly was for us. The corn chowder IS a little piece of heaven on earth. GET IT! The rest of the meal just got better and better. From the most succulent fried chicken north of Kentucky to the southern grits which required a moment of silence to thank the Almighty himself. Just when I didn't think it could get better - dessert! No words to describe how amazing it is. I'm officially a groupie of The Writing Room!

This a return visit. My wife wanted to recapture her lemoncello martini memory. Again, prepared perfectly, using their own made lemonade. From hummus to pasta on the steak and branzini. All worth the trip. Warning is this a neighborhood destination so if you go like we did at 4 pm expect it to be a little louder with the kids. No major issue but the sounds of fussing can be either be cute or vexing. If you want a quieter or romantic time go a little later or after 6 when the back room is open. The staff handled all well and timely. We'll be back

We have eaten here a couple of times and love it. The food is great and the service is excellent. ALL the staff you run into at this place are friendly and efficient. We had a drink at the bar before our dinner and was served by one of the nicest, friendliest bartender lady I have ever come across in NYC. The bar was very busy and she kept a smile on the entire time we were there. The Kale salad was delicious as was the branzino. Will definitely go back again.

I so wanted to love this restaurant, which is in a corner of the UES where there are hardly any good restaurants or bars. But the food was just okay. The place is beautifully decorated. Loved the portraits of well-known writers on wall, and there is a gorgeous library for lingering with a drink. Please do something with the food!!

The service and atmosphere was great. Bartender was humorous and fun. Waitress knowledgeable. The food was just underwhelming- friends fish was overlooked and dry. Lobster Bake was flavorless. Salmon tartar had little salmon. However, despite the mediocre food (at relevant prices) I would recommend it only as a place to have a few relaxed drinks with friends and little kitchen expectations.

My wife and I have passed here several times now and finally decided to go. What a great choice. The restaurant was a bit empty when we got there but filled up quickly. We ordered our food and some drinks which all came promptly and hot off the stove. My wife unfortunately did not like her dish and the waitress took it back brought us a menu and gave us a new dish at no extra charge. When we were finished with dinner we were offered a dessert on the house for the "mix up". We were shocked, never has a restaurant taken a meal back that we didn't like, replace it and then offer a free dessert on them.

Took my spouse her for restaurant week on a friday. We knew it would be busy and it was. We had a reservation for 9 but didnt sit down until 940. Staff were apologetic and was fine. It took quite a time getting the check which might be part of the problem. Drinks and food were excellent, server was knowledgeable and friendly. I would definitely come back though perhaps would go mid-week or make an earlier reservation. The Fried chicken was amazing as was the fava bean hummus!

I went to The Writing Room for dinner, and it did not disappoint! The food was amazing, and the service was even better. My party had a reservation, but our table was not ready when we arrived. We absolutely didn't mind waiting. After waiting about 10 minutes (no time at all), the manager came and apologized to us, and gave us a round of drinks on the house! It's things like that that don't have to be done but shows that you're really in the business of serving your customers. The food was the icing on the cake!! I highly recommend the fried chicken and creme brûlée.

GREAT food so I am hoping that they were just having an 'off night'. Would be willing to try it again bc the food is delicious! My boyfriend & I went to try it out for our date night. We had a reservation & were sat well after the time of our reservation. We waited patiently by the bar but our patience started to wear as we tried to order drinks. After over 15 minutes of being ignored by the bar staff, we gave up & decided to just get a drink when we sat. We were finally sat & after almost 10 minutes of sitting without a menu, water, bread, any attention from waitstaff, we got up to ask the hostess for menus. The waiter was very nice but couldn't get it together. He spilled our waters on us & the next table while serving our apps.

Your hopes soar. The exterior is inviting, and the interior is very nice too. A large bar with stools and hi-top tables. All in all, an attractive upscale looking dining room with both large upholstered booths and comfortable chairs and tables. Sadly, the food was just average to poor, and we felt the chef is not attentive to details. The $18 hamburger was mediocre, the french fries soggy & ridiculously over-salted. The $13 chopped salad was served in a small, deep bowl which looked like a cereal bowl. The highpoints were the Gin Martini and the amicable wait-staff. Pleasant welcomes, and they took our orders and our returned food with a smile on their faces. Bottom Line: NYC has a very large selection of restaurants to spend your money at.

Our first few visits were all very positive. Good food, sometimes creative and very good service. This past visit was a bit of a disappointment in the service department. We waited a very long time to get our first course after ordering and way too long between courses. After attempting to call the waiter over for quite some time in order to inquire after the whereabouts of our meal, we got a fairly week apology with no explanation. They did pour us some extra wine but it seemed too little too late. We hope this is an aberration.

First time here, tried the prix fixe (available always before 7 and all evening Sundays). Salad had a lovely dressing, fish (salmon, branzino) entrees were both outstanding. Normally not dessert people but the chocolate/hazelnut concoction was delicious. Some very interesting cocktails and nice wines. Very energetic vibe - this feels like a happening place that will make it. Interesting decor. We will be back.
