Diner Reviews
  • "The Woodsman Tavern is an excellent restaurant. Fresh, local ingredients that are simply created into fantastic, mouth watering dishes. The pork loin/chop is a thick piece of meat with a perfect smoked flavor, yet juicy and tender inside. Great salads and the ham platter came with three different cured styles of pork, each delicious. Oysters are fresh and flavorful and the desserts are too good to be skipped! It's a somewhat pricey dinner however, but worth it for a special occasion."

  • "For such a small space and the number of service staff, the service was slow. Not slow and leisurely, just slow. After being seated, it took our server 20 minutes to come over and say hi. Then another 15 to take our drink orders. Drinks were interesting and tasty, but skimpy pours on those and on the wine with dinner. The waiter was nice and very helpful in selecting dishes and quantity. The food was good, however first plates & sides were tastier than main dishes. The lamb was tough, my steak was beautifully cooked but barely seasoned, our friends' pork was chewy and the fat not rendered properly. Overall, the food, drink, and service didn't live up to a $300 bill. (Also charged our card for the wrong bill; luckily we caught it.)"

  • "Great menu. Fine preparation. Best oysters. Nice work on the smelt, chicken and steak. Excellent wine choices."

  • "Our food and service was excellent, hope to get back soon. The best oysters I have EVER eaten."

  • "The food, the service, the drinks here are all top notch! The location can be "sketch", make sure you don't leave anything in your car which is visible... not the restaurant's fault so visit here anyway. I loved the creativity with the drinks ... I asked them to surprise me with a Vodka based "lemon-drop" type drink and they delivered. If you haven't been here, it is a must visit."

  • "I was visiting from Chicago and this place was recommended by 2 different people so of course it warranted a visit. It's located east of the city so it was nice to check out a different side of the town if you only explored downtown. The food was good. The menu is typical for new American - not a ton but enough selections for appys and entrees, tasty, & expansive drinks list. The interior was nice, and probably the most interesting part of the location. I only had wine, but imagine if your looking for unique drinks this is the place. In terms of service, It left a lot to be desired. The waiter was mediocre, didn't keep us informed of the food, which felt like a long wait between apps and entree, just laid down the dessert menu w/out word."

  • "This is a very nice restaurant and bar. The staff is great, service was great. The building and decor are very nice. The trout in sun dried tomato sauce was the best trout dish we have ever had. Wish we could go back tonight."

  • "Our experience at The Woodsman Tavern did not disappoint. We found the noise level to be a lot higher than we expected, not good for romantic dinners; however, the ambiance was energetic and full of life. We good very good service, and their recommendations were outstanding! The kitchen was slow. For drinks, I definitely recommend the Meadowlark, and if you accompany that with the raw oysters...wow! The trout was superb, and the steaks we had were also top quality. If I went to Portland, I would definitely go visit again."

  • "We enjoyed a wonderful evening here with friends from Seattle. No rush. Attentive service. Excellent food."

  • "The food was wonderful, of course- that's why we chose this place. But the service was above & beyond any other dining experience I've ever had! For example, I dropped a knife and within 10 seconds, I had a new one. It was an all-hands-on-deck thing- all the servers and food runners helped us and made our experience beyond enjoyable."

  • "I love the food at Woodsman Tavern but we had an 8pm reservation and still had to wait 15 minutes before being sat. Kind of defeats the purpose of making reservations IMO. After waiting 10 minutes we were finally asked about drinks. Again, once we were seated, the service and food was fabulous!!! Prawn cocktail was perfect and we definitely left happy. I might be concerned about coming back just because my husband will not wait again."

  • "This was our second experience at The Woodsman Tavern. The staff is absolutely stellar! The ambience is quite nice and reasonably comfortable. Early dishes, small plates and salads, were creative and exceptional. In particular, the beets with smoked farro was wonderful, as were the cheese and ham fritters! The entrees, however, were a let down, particularly in comparison to the preceding dishes. The pork roast was over cooked and tough. The whole grilled trout was promising but too salty. The grilled chicken Caesar was quite good, but still did not rise above the small plates. I think The Woodsman needs to do much better. I'm not so sure we will soon be giving this otherwise great establishment another try."

  • "Service was exceptional and the staff was a delight. I've eaten here several times and have never found one thing I didn't like. This time however my pork tenderloin (which was ordered by 2 in our party) was overcooked and really tough. I was aware there was a new chef there so maybe this isn't his best item. Everything else was great, just a bummer that the thing I didn't enjoy was the main course. Appetizers and desserts were amazing."

  • "We very much enjoyed our dinner at Woodsman - very good food, lovely atmosphere, though the noise level was rock-concert loud and the service a bit precious. When it comes time for the coffee, look around for the cameras because you feel a scene from Portlandia coming on! Our enjoyment was especially tempered by the bill! Wow - the place is pricey! And almost worth it. Not sure if I'd rush back, though."

  • "It was a nice dinner in a nice space on Division. The service was attentive. About half full on a Monday night. Wish we could be more effusive in our praise, since it's so handy to home but it will go down as an experience that rated solidly in the middle of the pack. So much for 'W' in the alpha date night series."

  • "I love the way the place looks with the wood wainscoting and high ceilings, makes the place feel spacious. This was my 2nd visit for a late brunch. The food is very good and the portions generous. If you like dark, strong coffee, then order a cup. They use a French Press to make their coffee. Service was friendly and efficient."

  • "The Woodsman is not just great for dinner, but also offers an excellent brunch. I have been surprised that both times I've tried it for brunch, there has been either no or a very short wait time for tables. A good alternative to the usual crazy Portland brunch lines."

  • "My only complaint is that with low a ceiling it can get noisy and it's hard to hear. But food is top notch."

  • "Bitter greens salad with pear and blue cheese was the absolute stand out of the evening. How can something so simple be so good? Entrees were good too.... but oh the salad!"

  • "We knew that this popular restaurant started by the Stumptown founder would be tough to walk in on a Friday night. We did the Open table thing and got in at 7:45. We showed up about :25 minutes early and were seated. Very friendly staff and willing to help. The bartender, Ed, came over and discussed the many American bourbons they pour. All the food we ordered had wonderful distinct flavors. The "ham" selection board (special farm raised, in-house smoked from across the country) was an excellent app. The beef rib was excellent and my roast pork was full of flavor. Also, they had Racer 5 IPA (from Bear Republic) on tap in cask! Fun experience. Will definitely take our friends next time."

  • "This was our second time eating at the Woodsman. Sadly, our first experience set the bar rather high and our most recent dinner failed to impress. The $32 beef short rib was more fat than anything, the trout was delicious, the deviled eggs were over salted, the drinks were great, and our server was a bit absent. I think it was 30 minutes from the time we received our appetizers to the time we saw our server again. I'd still recommend checking it out, though it will be a long while before we return."

  • "We'd been wanting to try the Woodsman for some time and it didn't disappoint. The cocktails were spot on, the atmosphere was definitely energetic and most importantly the food was excellent. We'll be back on our next Portland trip!"

  • "I would go back just to have some great cocktails, the oysters, and the deviled eggs. Everything else else good, but those things were the show stoppers for me. On and the lemon cream gingerbread dessert. The service was great-felt like we were with friends."

  • "I chose The Woodsman Tavern for a business dinner and was impressed with the food and service. Their selection of cured ham was impressive. The ham was properly sliced (very thin) and the flavors were as complex as they were good...AND...they were from N. America. Our server changed mid-dinner...but...the change was seamless and both were excellent (attentive but not hovering). The atmosphere is a good blend of Portland chic and old world comfort."

  • "The menu had a few key breakfast adult beverages that hit the spot and was perfect! The menu for food, on the otherhand, was also small, but very big on carbohydrates and didn't have the kind of variety that I was looking forward to. I was happy to have the Lumberjack (a baked pancake, your choice of breakfast meat and eggs) and was happily surprised to see scrapple on the list of meat the choose from. The scrapple was great, the eggs were cooked to my liking (scrambled) but the pancake, which looked like heaven, left something to be desired. My friends all happened to ored the biscuits and gravy, which was good, but light on gravy and the biscuits were almost too crisp on the bottom, which made them interesting to cut through."

  • "Had a wonderful dinner at The Woodsman, compliments of a gift certificate from a friend. We do not normally spend much money on meals (thus the 4 star instead of the 5 star) so it was the perfect gift -- romantic, delicious, great character, friendly service, and a convenient location in SE Portland. We both had the trout and then sopped up the bread with lightly toasted bread. Delicious. Then followed it up with the brownie dessert which had great flavors. From the rustic-chic ambiance to the fonts on the menus to the beautiful flower arrangement on the front bar counter, it seems like they've thought of every single detail for a very special meal."

  • "When I needed a place to take my wife for a wonderful Valentines day dinner, I knew that would be the Woodsman, and it did not disappoint one bit. We had a wonderful time, the food was great, ambiance was perfect. To top it all off, the customer service. courteous and really just cool to be around. This place is the whole package."

  • "We love going to the woodsmen. The food is amazing and the atmosphere is fantastic. The first plates are always wonderful and creative, but have the feeling of comfort food. One of my favorite restaurants in Portland."

  • "The waitstaff was very attentive and friendly, which helped me get over the woodsman (lumberjack) feel of the restaurant and the oldies music. Known for their oysters and seafood, the restaurant also has lots of great meat dishes as well. Loved the chicken liver foie gras."

  • "We knew to avoid the ham plates from our last visit because it's sliced like lunch meat - it's good-tasting fancy ham, don't get me wrong, but I don't want an entree of shaved ham. We had scallops, trout (would have preferred not to have the head attached) and steak, oysters and deviled eggs for appetizers and the brownie with peanut brittle ice cream (one of the best desserts I've ever eaten!) All the food was delicious, and Jill, our waitress was very attentive, swooping in between conversation breaks to get plates. My only complaint is the restaurant is very noisy! Our friend, across the table, asked us to repeat what we said several times, and we were tucked in the corner, on purpose, to get away from the bigger group in the room."

  • "Our party had a new server being shadowed by a veteran. Only two of the three appetizers arrived. No one came to the table after the food was dropped off and we sat for 10 minutes waiting for the third dish. The waitress-in-training came over and apologized, she had scratched the appetizer by accident. Our main dishes arrived-AGAIN, only two were placed at the table, and we sat waiting for our third dish for 10 more minutes! No apology, no explanations. When the bill came we were still charged for the third appetizer that we had to hunt down and beg for. The food was so good, yet we left so unimpressed by the service,I really can't say we enjoyed our meal."
