Five for dinner with reservations on a Wednesday evening. Arriving around 6:20 we were seated promptly and our drink and appetizer order was taken. Drinks and appetizers came quickly, and that is the last time that I can use that particular adverb in this review. Long story short, we sat talking until around 8:30 when our waiter came by offering some bread, asking if he could refresh our drinks, and acknowledging that things were running slowly--because the steak one of us had ordered had a long fire time (it had been ordered blood rare; I suspect we'd be there still if it had been ordered it medium). When it finally arrived, the food was fine. The cocktails were fine as well. The wait staff was fine. There are, however, a lot of restaurants in Portland that are happy to see a group willing to drop $300 for dinner for 5, and many of them do not require one to sit patiently waiting a couple of hours for burgers and a steak. We'll be found at one of them the next time.

The food was either really good or really off. Oysters were phenomenal. Burgers, Brussels sprouts, and hush puppies were divine takes on classics. But the beet salad w olives and feta and the rice puff dessert, in all their uniqueness, were bland. Nice ambience and lovely staff and service. I'd go back but would be more selective about menu items.

5 of us had dinner. Between us we had beer, wine and cocktails, all of which were great. The cocktails are inventive and delicious. A dozen oysters started us off - perfect. The shrimp hush puppies were so-so. The pot of chicken liver/foie gras, however, was fantastic. Hamburger, trout, and pork were great and plentiful. Only negative: lighting is too low for our 50+ year old eyes. We had to pull out the trusty phone flash light. It was a super fun place and a special night.

Six of us headed to the Woodsman for dinner the other night. A few of us had never been before. The ambiance was very warm and inviting for a cold winter night. Our server was extremely knowledgable about the menu and recommended wonderful dishes. Everyone loved everything from the Crab Rolls to the smoked Trout and the Ham Plates to the Pork Cutlet. The food was served in the perfect amount of time and our server made sure that we had everything we needed throughout the night. Would highly recommend going here if you haven't already and even if you have!

In a city full of pretentious restaurants, The Woodsman Tavern stands wonderfully apart. The location, the decor, the staff and of course the food and drinks all combine to give patrons a warm and glowing feeling as they take it all in. Bravo Woodsman!

When we arrived they sat us in wooden school desk chairs, so uncomfortable! I ordered the steak and it was the smallest piece of beef I have ever had at a restaurant. Skirt steak is an inexpensive cut of beef. For the price I paid I would have expected a larger portion, and the sides need to be purchased separately. I had a baked potato, the price was outrageous. It tasted fine not incredible. My husband's trout though boneless, had scales! Big no-no. The service was good but not remarkable. I heard so many great things, maybe that is why my dissapointment was so great. I was going to bring my mother the week of Thanksgiving, when she came to visit, however Portland has many more choices.

Our party shared a sampling of dishes and found the food tasty, interesting and well prepared. The service was superb and we had a very good table. Half the restaurant is a bar, so as the night progressed the noise got very loud. We recommend the fries, beet salad, hush puppies, brussell sprouts (although a little sweet), radicchio salad and the ham and biscuits. I would have preferred the trout not swimming in broth. The menu could be expanded. Thank you for a delightful evening.

Wonderful dinner. Seafood was the highlight, especially the smoked muscles. Our server answered all our questions regarding wine list and menu, plus was very nice. Our daughter now lives on the east coast and was shocked how extensive the wine list was for a Portland restaurant. Will definitely go back so we can order the seafood tower. Would recommend a booth.

I have enjoyed each visit. My only suggestion is they remove the two top next to the wait station. It's kind of floating in the middle of the room and for the ambiance and price point, that would be a horrible table. LUCKILY, the hostess redirected us to a wall table. Whew! My steak was excellent. The pork seemed a little fatty, yet perhaps it was the breading... Regardless, I think of the Woodsman has a great staple. My experience was positive.

Let the restaurant hostess know that I would be at my reservation the day before when she called. Due to an accident and traffic, we ended up 15 minutes late for our reservation. The hostess called at the 8 min late mark and I let her know about the traffic and accident. She called again 5 mintues after that to let me know there was another reservation for our table in an hour and 45 minutes. We arrived 2 minutes after the second call, hurried to table to eat and release the table. The restaurant made no adjustment. We waited for 15 minutes before anyone came to our table to take our drink order. From there service was a slow crawl. During dessert they asked to move us to the bar to make way for their next reservation. I won't ever return.

Had brunch on a Sunday with 2 others. The wait staff was very pleasant. The food and drinks were good. Both my dining partners had bloody mary's which they loved and the smoked salmon with pickled veggies, cream cheese and bread. Both were very satisfied. I had the biscuits and gravy with a friend egg on top. I thought the portioning for my dish was a bit small, but after a couple brunch cocktails to go with it I was pleasantly satisfied. The noise level was a bit higher than ideal, but we were sitting next to a large table of boisterous women who were quite loud. Overall a very pleasant dining experience. I've never had dinner there, but I would definitely recommend for brunch.

The Woodsman is a very nice neighborhood restaurant, This is the second time I have been to the restaurant and again it was very awkward at the table when someone in our party wanted to order a soda, I would think serving their guests and making them feel comfortable would be the goal of the restaurant, Instead of this pretentious notion that they and their restaurant are just to good to serve beverages many guests would like to consume,

we were very excited to go to the woodsmen and unfortunately the only thing that was amazing was the Brussels sprout salad, it was incredible. The seating was uncomfortable, our server didn't even greet us before asking us for a drink order, the food was good but not great and way over priced for the quality. we felt rushed by our server and had to ask for things multiple times. We did find the bar tender to be charming, she was friendly and welcoming. we probably will not eat there again

Went there on a Wednesday night fairly early in the evening. The food was very good - skirt steak eas cooked to perfection. The ham left a little to be desired. You would think that it would be hard to get a ham and potato dinner underwhelming. But, the ham was thinly sliced, quite salty and served over a small amount of vegetable. It was like they went down to the local delecatesin and bought some sandwich meat and put it on the veggies. Oh, but they twirled it uo a little do it looked like a bigger portion. We ordered some of the oysters, but our server forgot to bring them to the table. Since the oysters didn't come it allowed for a lot of down time enjoying our drinks that did come.

Hadn't been here in awhile. The dining room was pretty much empty on a Sunday night. We were not given a drink menu and had to request one. The waitress spilled water all over our table and never came back to clean it up, even though she acknowledged that she made a mess. There were no specials that night and the menu was pretty small. The brussels, sprouts appetizer was great, the burger and pork cutlet wer just okay.

This is a great location on the east side. If you live in the neighborhood I am completely jealous. On the upside it has kept my weight down. Our breakfast crew adore this location, the food and the staff. And not necessarily in the order. Get the scrapple, you will not be disappointed. The cold brew salmon was amazing. Silky smooth and not the salty stuff you get used to having from the grocery store. The staff handled our large group (8) with ease. Cannot say enough good things about them and their food. Go there. Had a nice romantic dinner with my girl last week. We were seated before asking to be moved to an open booth and the request was met with a smile. Sommelier recommended a great Beaujolais and we had a delicious sampling of oysters, salads and starters, finishing with the trout in crazywater, which we shared. Service was great but casual (as it should be in a spot like this) and we lingered for a while over that last glass of wine. The Woodsman is still worth a visit, especially since the quality of food is exceptional and it's a much easier last-minute reservation to get compared to Sorenson's newer spot down the street. I'll be back again and again.

Woodsman is the classic NW experience. The food is totally unique with unusual combinations of fresh and local ingredients. I love the smokey flavor imparted to most their dishes. I also manage to try new dishes because their menu is always changing and interesting. It is the perfect place to bring out of towners so they can experience the more unique and quirky side of Portland. Woodsman has excellent cocktails, that if you are not careful you will spend more on drinks than you will on dinner. Love the ambiance but not a good place for large groups or older people with hearing impairment because it is super loud. However, when you desire loud and energetic this is a fun place.

We have had brunch many times here. The menu of items is always interesting and everything ordered to date has been quite delicious. Oyster offerings are first rate. The baked pancake is a great dessert for sharing! Presentation is high quality and the staff know their food and beverage offerings well. The cocktails are unique and taste wonderful - instead of "weird" as some establishments' cocktails that try too hard to be different. The noise level can be distracting when the restaurant is full which does make conversation more challenging. Other than that, this is a Saturday morning favorite!

This was our first trip to the Woodsman. We were looking for a special place for dinner for our anniversary, and we had heard good things, so we gave it a try. Let me say first that I was rather put off by the prices listed, $3.50 for a single oyster on the half shell? But I ignored my hesitations & dug in. Happy hour has a lovely feature, wherein there are some oysters priced at a mere (!) $2 each. The oysters were quite delicious, served with a light mignonette. Next we tried a ham plate, and as ham goes, this might have been the best either of us had ever had. Served shaved, with a freshly grilled biscuit (also splendid) and some perfectly ordinary but still yummy collards. Tuesday is fried chicken night, don't miss it!

I like the Woodsman Tavern very much. The food is very good. As a matter of fact, it is the best restaurant close to my house. I have been there more a dozen times but the noise levels are absurd. I took my mother who is 83 and the sounds in the tavern gave her a headache and it gave me a headache too and I am relatively young. I asked the staff to turn the music down because between the kitchen sounds, bar sounds, the talking of the patrons - I am sure the noise levels exceeded OSHA standards for noise exposure (I am not kidding).....and we were there at 5:30.....

We are big fans of the Woodsman Tavern and particularly the incredible Cold Seafood Tower. Plenty enough for 4 to share, the tower has the freshest seasonal seafood. On our latest visit we had a variety of Oregon and Washington oysters, house smoked mussels, albacore tuna, and bay shrimp salad. Two sides of grilled broccoli and chanterelles and padron peppers made for a wonderful meal. The service is friendly and attentive. The waiter recommended an excellent white wine that was paired well with the seafood and stayed in our budget.
