Diner Reviews
  • "We had a great experience about 2 weeks ago, so we decided to return. Everything, especially the service, was excellent. Every person seemed happy to see us and were very friendly. We started with some oysters, deviled eggs and french fries. The deviled eggs, in particular, are superb. We had a peach & cucumber salad next . . . delicious. For entrees, we had the salmon & the meatloaf. Both dishes were really good. We wanted to have dessert, though we were way too full! It was a great experience . . . again!"

  • "So many other remarkable establishments in Portland I probably won't bother to return. Should have read online reviews. Some complimented the atmosphere; compared to other upscale tavern restaurants, the atmosphere is so-so. The food was ok. Early dinner & already out of items on the sparse menu. Temper any anticipation over cocktails if you are a vodka drinker: they carry just 2 types of vodka & neither represent local distilleries. Think twice before you go with a large party to celebrate a happy event, as your joyous voices may echo in the cavernous facility. Difficult to hear one another just across the table. You'd think the staff would be aware of that fact, but our waiter felt obliged to shush us on behalf of a nearby table"

  • "I haven't been disappointed yet. Their in-house charcuterie (bacon, Canadian bacon, etc.) is fabulous, their potatoes are perfectly cooked and very tasty - unlike how bland most breakfast potatoes are. The cocktails are first class and wonderful tasting without over-attempting to concoct weird infusions just to be trendy. We split the baked pancake for "dessert" and I'm still thinking about that days after eating there - it was heavenly! Zach has been our waiter twice now and he's a total professional, knows his food and beverages and is incredibly personable."

  • "Really slow service isn't. The guy was super pleasant but wasn't to be seen for long stretches of time. The cadence of the evening was uncomfortable slow and the place was not that busy."

  • "Took my friend out for a birthday dinner. While our server took our drink orders within 5 min of us getting seated, the drinks took 20 min to arrive. Then our server didn't take our dinner order for almost another 15 min after. After most of our food arrived (1 order never even made it to the table), our server didn't check in with us until we were almost done eating it. It was extremely difficult to get our server, or any server's attention for assistance to get another fork and drink orders. We've come here 3 times in the past and had wonderful service. The food is always delicious and beautifully served. We were really disappointed with the lack of service especially since it was my friend's birthday and the staff was aware of that."

  • "Excellent service all around, beautiful cocktails and well sourced food. The bar food, starters and cocktails were the highlight. Dinner was good though not amazing. I will go back for happy hour, but the noise level became too much to carry on conversation as the evening progressed."

  • "The young lady waiting our table was a delight and very knowlegable. The overall experience was good. This was our second time eating at the Woodsman Tavern and both times have been enjoyable."

  • "We travelled from Southern California to Portland just to experience the food scene. Woodsman Tavern did not disappoint. We had incredible service, tasty wine (by the glass, which is hard to find), a very diverse, creative choice of dinner offerings, and an excellent meal."

  • "Our dining experience was a great disappointment as we have eaten here several times before and had great service, excellent cocktails and wonderful food. This time, service was extremely slow, even though the restaurant was not very busy. Cocktails were so bad and done so incorrectly (bartender made two drinks both of which were NOT the requested Old Fashioned's) that most of them were comped. It took forever to get someone to our table who could assist us with wine selection. Food was good, but not exceptional as before. Noise level was and always has been ridiculously loud. Reason? The restaurant insists upon playing music at a very loud level. Even one of the servers mentioned it was difficult to hear what patrons are saying!"

  • "Dinner took forever and not in a fun dining way, but no one helping us way.... Took10 min once we sat down for waiter, forever between courses and they had to scramble for change for my bill... Great food though, expensive..."

  • "The chairs at the table are very uncomfortable. I suppose they match the decor but do nothing for comfort. I ordered a martini. They only have two offerings for vodka. The martini was heavy on the vermouth; too sweet. We ordered oysters on the half shell and the oyster shooters as an appetizer which were delicious. My butter lettuce salad was wonderful and enough for two. We ordered the grilled whole trout and the ribeye. Trout was great, but the steak was a bad cut with too much marbling. Half my steak was fat. It came to the table sliced. Service was extremely slow even though there were only two other tables when we arrived and got worse through the evening. He appeared to be the only waiter for the dining room and outside."

  • "The food was delicious but service was unbearably slow for a partially filled dining room. Our server seemed to disappear at times. I ordered the smoked shellfish caesar. It was tasty but where was the smoked shellfish?"

  • "Heard good things about the place and have to been to Ava Genes ( i think they own woodsman as well) and loved that. Apps and drinks were good, but the food wasn't as good as expected for the price so we left a little disappointed. Corn on the cob had too things piled on top. I was never asked how my prime rib was to be done and was a bit too rare and I'm usually ok with medium rare. For the price, not sure i'd come back."

  • "It's always hard to top other restaurants in Portland, yet the Woodsman did so in spades. We came before the reservation and sat at the bar. The service was great, the cocktails were excellent and the conversation with the staff made the short stay very pleasant. When we sat down for dinner, the superb service continued. The server explained the dishes very well, and the delivery of each course was timed perfectly. (It was also very busy, which adds to the degree of difficulty.) The deviled eggs are superb, and the watermelon salad was a true highlight of the evening. For entrees, we had the salmon, the trout and the pork. Each was very different, and all were delicious. We will absolutely return to this restaurant!"

  • "The Woodsman is right in our neighborhood, and we have been there many times. The food is great. We ordered many small bites along with a rebaked potato. The potatoes arrived warm not hot, they were quickly whisked away, new ones brought to the table and they were taken off our bill even tho I insisted that was unnecessary. Very nice servers. Outside seating is on the street on small tables, but we enjoy watching the world go by as we eat, especially in nice weather."

  • "My daughter lives in Portland so we visit at least annually. The Woodsman is always on the list to visit while here. Everyone enjoys the delicious menu and great drinks. The staff is super friendly. Don 't miss it!"

  • "Food was very good, but difficult to put together a coherent meal. Best for drinks and small plates. Casting about for a red wine to go with the trout thinking that one would work as fish is served in tomato water. Waiter affirmed that the beaujolais would be a good choice. Not! Also many wonderful sauces, but no bread or other means to enjoy them."

  • "We knew going in that it would not be cheap. Our group loved the atmosphere. The server was knowledgeable. Menu had something for everyone and the portions were a good size. Everyone agreed that we'd return and definitely want to try their happy hour."

  • "Food excellent, noise overwhelming, service so-so. But when a server drops a drink full of ice on the table (pure accident) and drenches two of the party I expect them to be comped with replacement drinks. Lots of apologies but no comp. Lack of attention from the maitre d' to keep an eye on what was going on. Very much in two minds as to whether we would go again."

  • "Food was fantastic, great service, but can get very loud since we were seated right under the speaker and dark in the corner."

  • "i have two main issues with my experience at the woodsman. firstly, i made a reservation and upon arriving for that reservation the staff did not inquire as to whether or not i had made one. Once i pointed out i had made a reservation the staff member asked if a booth would be alright. We responded yes, unaware that it would mean dining by the restroom in a mostly empty restaurant. The other issue our party experienced was an error on our first courses. they didn't come. we received them after letting the staff member know. by this time however we had already been in our restroom seats for 45min. I must say that we know mistakes happen and that wasn't the issue. The issue was that no one ever apologized and that was unfortunate."

  • "The Woodsman is a great destination for brunch...full of locals but welcoming of visitors. Food was outstanding. We were surprised that the sugar content was low enough that even the diabetics among us had a good time."

  • "When I heard woodsman tavern, I was expecting something more rustic. It is definately NOT a tavern. The food was great. But other than that it was subpar. It has potential with the decor, but I doubt it will live up to its name."

  • "We are a big group normally maxing out at 9 for our breakfast club so when I discovered Woodsman Tavern takes reservations I was thrilled. This is a great spot on Division with big windows and elbow room for any size of group. The conditioned bloody Mary, awesome. The mimosa, just as good. Tried multiple items off of the brunch menu and was not disappointed. Who knew there was such a thing as scrapple and boy with the maple syrup you just couldn't stop eating it. Go! Eat! Enjoy!"

  • "We chose to eat at The Woodsman with friends visiting from out of town - it did not disappoint! Starters, salad and meals were wonderful. Our server made wine recommendations which were perfect. Another fantastic meal - thank you. "

  • "I wasn't so impressed with brunch, I have to say I'm breakfast challenged, gluten and egg free. So there were definitely limitations for me. But the other 3 people who didn't have the same restrictions had the eggs benedict and thought it was fine .. Our beignets never arrived and it was kind of a crazy morning due to the boil water mandate. No coffee or tea since they couldn't boil water. Really?"

  • "I have been trying to go to the Woodsman for a long time. I have a standing 9 week reservation a Ava Genes. The service at the woodsman was Excellent! The food tried too hard to be creative and missed an important point - keep it simply s-----. Don't try so hard!"

  • "We loved gobbling the fritters while taking in the landscape pictures of our great PNW and listening to the faint strains of country classics. Thought I saw the ghost of Johnny Cash strolling across that awesome wood floor, but it might have been the Rainier beer..."

  • "not a busy night, we had reservations - it was 30 minutes of sitting in the very uncomfortable chairs before we were greeted by a waiter... after which a very simple drink order was messed up. Finally ordered an appetizer and left 90 minutes and $60 later. The waiter seemed to spend most of the time staring into a computer screen trying to figure out how to place a drink order... after messing it up she finally walked the 4 feet over to the bar to actually speak to the bartender. We had actually come for dinner but just gave up."

  • "This is one of our favorite places to dine. The decor is perfect as well as the service. We almost always have the trout in crazy water because we just can't get enough. The watermelon salad was also very good - very refreshing. The prices can run high - especially for desert, and the chairs are cute but uncomfortable (that would be my only complaint)."

  • "Tried a lot of the sides that we'd never had before..none of us ordered an entree which they call second course. We had spoon bread, ham and cheese fritters, oysters cocktail n shooters n half shell, fries (had to try since a ton of orders were flying out of the kitchen) the woodsman tray which had smoked trout, crackers, foie grais, pork pate, jalapeno poppers. Food was all delish..salty a bit more than needed but good. For four people we had a bill of $140.00 before tip. "

  • "The oysters are among the best in town! The ham plate is superb -- the pickled collards are a big yes. And the jalapeno poppers were great. The trout dinner was excellent. The pork however was overcooked. There need to be a few more vegetable offerings-- there was only grilled asparagus this time and an interesting watermelon plate. Finally, the cocktails are weak--in a city of overdone, but alcohol-weak cocktails these are among the poorest. However good wine selections with an especially good Pinot. Great music, but also noisy"
