But this time was even better. It's rare to find gnocchi in the US that are really good and appropriately light, but the gnocchi on the spring menu at the Wooden Table were spectacular.(I grew up in an Italian family and ate gnocchi regularly. I've also sampled gnocchi all over Italy so I have lots of experience. My family calls me the "gnocchi queen"!). I also had the veal cheeks which were melt in your mouth tender and tasty. The brodo (broth) in both the gnocchi dish and the veal cheeks was especially delicious, with wonderful flavors and not too much salt. This was our fifth visit to TWT and we were not disapointed. TWT was a bit noisier than we are use to; however, I believe it may have been due to the city wide fundraise which we take part in each year.4/25/2013 12:00:00 AMFood HeavenYou just can not believe how outstanding the Italian food is here. All the pasta is handmade in the kitchen and the food fresh with brilliant combinations of taste treats. All in my group demanded more bread so that we could sop-up the sauces on our plates. It has been a long time since everyone at the table was freely sharing bites with one another to decide which of the fantastic dishes was better than the next. It was not a fancy atmosphere but rather relaxed and comfortable. The servers were prompt and knowledgeable on the dishes and wine. I loved this place and will be back many times to come.

Hostess, eh.First time for dinner. We had a very nice evening and the food was top notch. We split a gnocchi and had the veal cheeks and monkfish for entrees. Apparently Monday night is half price wine night when you buy two full entrees so that was a nice surprise.
A couple minor negatives in regard to the hostess. When we walked in she called us "guys". I really, really dislike that. She seated us at a table for four. After my wife sat, I sat down next to her. Then the hostess questioned my choice! Are you sure you want to sit there?
I like siting next to my wife so we can talk quietly. Apparently the hostess thought I should sit across. Good grief! Hopefully the owner will give her some lessons in hospitality.

The staff were relaxed, very friendly and were knowledgeable about the menu. Two of us split an appetizer (chicken liver mousse), salad (arugula), pasta (linguinie w/ pork belly - yum!) and entree (monkfish) - and had plenty to take home too. The food was amazing and prepared with a deft touch - no one flavor overpowered the others, and the portion sizes were perfect. The red sauce has impressive depth and subtle layers of seasoning. There are no bad choices with the pasta dishes, but committed carnivores will devour the roasted pork bellies on linguine. The homemade sausage is complemented by a crispy polenta, chicken cacciatore and sauteed vegetables. A real "neighborhood" feel. There were so many good choices on the menu, it was hard to decide, but I settled on the sausage, and my husband, that homemade ravioli. Both dishes were fantastic. They took a while to prepare, but we were told ahead of time that each dish was made to order. Our spinach salads were good as well. The waiter was pleasant, knowledgeable, and did his job well. My only "complaint" might be that the monk fish was substituted with some other fish that was not remotely like monk fish. So-no one at our table ordered it. I'm a big fan of mussels, tried me everywhere, and these were fantastic! The wine, butter, sausage and saffron broth was amazing. The waiter jokingly suggested we might need a straw and by then end of the bowl, a straw is exactly what I wish I had to finishe the broth! I also enjoyed the tortellini with spinach, sausage and Romano. The flavors were delicious and creamy. I was thankful they had the option for two different sized dishes and I chose the smaller plate with 6 tortellini which was perfect after all the mussels. I felt perfectly full and not stuffed. Our friends wanted to dine here during 5280 restaurant week. I have to say I was skeptical until the food came and wow was I pleasantly surprised! Everything we ordered was so outstanding, not just good, outstanding! They had a very limited menu, so we were able to try everything and it was all just amazing. Definitely fit for foodies and we are so fortunate to have such a wonderful restaurant in the southern suburbs. I can't wait to go back and check out their regular menu.
