The Winery Restaurant & Wine BarBirthday lunch at the WineryA close friend and I celebrated my birthday together in this lovely restaurant. The bartender honored my request for a lemon drop martini made with fresh lemon juice, and it was superb! The luncheon specials at The Winery offer nice choices at a reasonable price, so we chose one of those....a rich yummy beef tips with pasta dish that was delicious.
Service was attentive without being pushy.

Though we don't even drink, we still find this to be such a delightful spot for a gourmet dinner with special friends. Whether we're looking for a lively and highly energized atmosphere or are seeking some quiet conversation with our dinner, they always seem to accommodate our needs. Seated in a glassed in room for 20-24, with a commanding view of the wine 'cellar' providing a lovely and colorful backdrop! Dinner was delicious and magnificently presented. Though, David, our favorite server, wasn't on this evening, Ann did a fine job and kept the evening lively and fun! Food & wine was excellent, but it lacked the old world charm.

All 4 entrees were excellent (burger, sea bass, ahi tuna salad, and "Vegetable Tower"). Bottle of wine was probably $5 or $7 more than it should have been @$32. During the meal, I began to think the service was slow, but then I realized that our server was not delivering our entrees because one person in our group was so busy talking that he wasn't finishing his soup! Once she checked with us and verified that we were "ready", the entrees appeared instantly. What I thought was slow service was actually service that was closely timed to our table's pace! Although, once you are inside the building you are transformed into a top notch dining experience. The food is great, and there is a lot of choices. Also, the staff is very friendly and personable. The wine selection is never ending, they seem to have everything. Cream of mushroom soup in deliciously creamy. Heirloom tomato salad a must try. The creme brulee was out of this world tasty. The Chef I take my hat off too, everything is so flavor filled. Simply outstanding and has a great kitchen staff that helps stand behind his vision. Our table service with Allison and Spike, so friendly, helpful, very nice, above and beyond. One of the best services with great food & wine selections I have had in years. The service was great. They make you feel welcome as soon as you walk in. Our table wasn't quit ready so they escorted us to the bar and offered to decant our wine and they were waiting for us at our table. The food was very good. My friend had the duck confit and baby spinach salad. He had some bones in the duck but the restaurant handled very professionally. They comped one of our corkages and brought us desserts for free. They did a good job of turning a negative situation into a positive experience.
It was a birthday dinner for my wife and our friend that I put on the reservation through Open Table. This was no small feat to get them to drive from Laguna and San Juan Capistrano. We all agreed it was definitely worth the drive! One of the best Cesar Salad (with shrimp) I have ever had. The service was excellent, valet parking convenient and though we ate inside the patio looked wonderful. Make The Winery Restaurant & Bar a destination all on its own, not just if you are going to The District.
